Parallel Group Discussion on Benchmarking of Nursing Science Program in the South East Asian Region Undergraduate Nursing Program

m Chair: Associate Professor Penchan S. Monaiyapong After officially opening this parallel group discussion, the members of the core group as well as the participating guests were recognized. Two sessions: I. 11:00-12:30 mainly discussed the Input-Process-Output Framework of Benchmarking the Nursing Science Program Several Universities and colleges have shared information about the system in their schools/country. Allow me to mention some of the significant information shared like: 1. Admission requirements 2. Job hiring requirements and salary 3. Teaching and Learning Method

Some do not require and admission test Others do not do the screening of the students

2. Monthly Salary - Payment by rank - In some schools, it is barely low as 200USD/mo 3. Professional Stipen - Benefits for employees ( e.g. education for your children, health benefits- paying 10% of the total bill, free tuition fees for continuing studies, RLE honorarium) - Housing allowance 4. Workload/Teaching Load - Team teaching, rated in units - Input of 40 hrs /week labor law, 18 units ( basic) beyond that is overload -12 credits/sem beyond is paid on overload

Integration of each course in the community Siliman: doing curricular review every year and invites people from different sectors in the community. With representatives from the local government to get feedback right away. Tying up with Gen ed teachers. Doing community learning, introduce health using some other ways like agriculture, business, bookkeeping to catch the peoples attention. CPA: invite the parents of students to attend to the concerns of children. PTA meeting every year to share students status and grades. Indonesia: approach for curriculum? what system??clinical practice? CTU: Love and service are being taught all the time. Use of Nursing theories: Gordon ( Assessment pattern), Neuman, and other theories. Siliman: accomplish basic procedures in the RLE and skills lab before bringing the students to the area. 2nd sem of 2nd year is already late. Systems model is used in USA in assessment. Sharing from 1st year clinical to third year. We cant come

up with full nurses at the end of the four year course. USA: Health clearances Using Carfours patterns of knowing. Indonesia: first year second sem. All clinical area for one yearIndonesia. Pres: Ideal nursing education. Incorporate theory in nursing practice because learning by the book is dangerous. Research: relate it to teaching, in the area, that is, anywhere. Have a broad idea of what nursing is and its application.Bring research to the real life.
