Quality to perform
Deep hole core drilling is disproportionately costlier than for shallow holes. The cost of quality can have enormous consequences on the profitability at a drill site. With this in mind, we are offering the MO thread, manufactured to exacting specifications using the industry's highest quality raw materials and advanced machining. Atlas Copco has zero tolerance towards compromising on material and workmanship quality in the design and manufacture of its products.
Upstream source - in-hole performance.
Atlas Copco and its customers benefit from and pay for industry leading quality. Only a few upstream raw material suppliers are able to meet the industrys most demanding raw material specifications; those required by Atlas Copco.
Drilling deeper than 3,000 meters with NMO drill rods requires exceptional product made from top quality raw material. Seamless tubing gives you peace of mind for trouble free performance, even under very demanding conditions. Cold drawn seamless tubing provides reliable quality regardless of whether you use parallel wall or our variable wall internally upset drill rods. With its high adherence to dimensional quality control and elimination of all potential longitudinal separation failures, the seamless tubes outperform other tube manufacturing designs such as electro resistance welded.
Deep hole drillers benefit because Atlas Copco MO deep hole drill rods are manufactured from a metallurgically optimized 1541 grade of seamless tubing which consistently and substantially exceeds our own already elevated specifications for yield, tensile strength and other parameters. The MO deep hole drill rods are made of raw materials with superior ultimate yield and tensile strength values, which support the fatigue resistance required at the tool joints. In addition, the rods are made of raw material with a double standard, 1:6000, for straightness and ultra low residual hoop stress specifications, further improving material integrity.
Furthermore, the material requires a metallurgy which can deliver elevated mid body and tool joint mechanical property values made possible through heat treatment. Using a state of the art through-wall induction heat treatment process in the manufacture of seamless MO wireline drill rods, we ensure joint dimensional integrity by enhancing the ultimate mechanical properties of the tool joint area, before machining the MO thread.
Demanding core drilling applications requires a trusted combination of end user expertise with capital equipment, consumables as well as spare parts and service. Atlas Copco is a world class provider of industrial solutions and your logical choice for world class service and a complete range of industry leading deep hole core drilling rigs, diamond tools and tubular products.

Factor of safety applied to depth capacities, which are based on straight vertical fluid filled holes. Third party destructive testing figures conducted on non heat treated drill rods are used for the baseline figures above. Atlas Copco also produce non heat treated rods when requested. Customers having their personal experiences using the products, particularly with heat treated tool joints, regularly exceed these ratings. Ensure that accessories, core barrels and other threaded connections properly mate with the selected tubular products.
In addition to standard MO rods for deep hole drilling, Atlas Copco also produces the CMO series. These internally upset rods are lighter in weight, allowing drilling companies to achieve greater depths without losing the MO threads outstanding capabilities. Atlas Copco internally upset 'CMO' series wireline rods maintain the normal outside diameter over its entire length and standard wall thickness at the threaded ends where it is required. The inside diameter gradually increases achieving a thinner wall thickness in the mid-body. The weight decrease offered by internally upset rod is as much as up to 21% for H, 13-11% for N and B sizes. The benefits for the end user are primarily that greater depths can be achieved in a nominal diameter. This provides greater flexibility in rig utilization and core barrel selection when the limitations of depth are determined by machine pull back force. Lighter drill rods are easier on people and machinery. A thinner mid body design provides a more flexible wireline drill rod when end users require the same.

Critical balance
Atlas Copco deep hole MO wireline drill rods provide you with the optimum balance of design and practical features to keep your operating costs down. MO rods are for use in all conditions and applications where long service life is expected with trouble free reliability, ease of use and inherent strength. Just like with the 3300m field proven NMO thread, all MO drill rod threads provide a high-strength, high-pressure threaded connection as a minimum. MO series wireline rods are strong and robust to survive the pressures in repetitive deep drill holes.
Acting as the conduit for the flushing medium, mating MO thread profiles provide a leak proof joint over changing depths with ease of use and long service life. The MO thread design is forgiving to the end user and makes it easy to stab, start, make and maintain joint pre-torque, and with a flat learning curve it is easy to learn to work with. Occurring at the molecular level on the drill rod pin end, without imparting additional risk of embrittlement, the Atlas Copco anti galling process completes the MO drill rod.
Critical design
Atlas Copco threads share sound general thread design characteristics. They are coarse, tapered, require pre-torque to overcome joint stand off and have multiple sealing and interference surfaces. The MO thread is a modified buttress designed thread with a positive yet almost perpendicular pressure flank angle that provides exceptional leak proof sealing and elevated pull back strength. The thread form ensures ease in keeping the joint clean, and maintains a consistent pretorque requirement with depth. The MO clearance flank angle is shallow, providing for thread joint durability. Its large manufacturing radii eases fatigue concentration, and the rods are as such well suited to higher bend radii found in deep deviated drilling. The MO thread and related MO adapters have a unique identification groove that will make identification easy, avoid mixing rods and adapters with others that may look similar but are incompatible. These two groove markings on the rod pin will also give an indication of the rod body wear. In addition, it will make it easier to identify joint location when breaking the joints.
