The University Club was founded in March of 1901 and officially incorporated two months later on May 9, 1901. The Clubs motto, Sapere Aude - Incipe (on the official crest situated above the fireplace in the foyer) means Dare to be Wise - begin. The first clubhouse was located at 99 Washington Avenue (now the site of the Twin Towers) and the Club moved to its present site when it purchased the Victorian-style home of George Amsdell in 1907. An addition was built on the back of the house to accommodate a restaurant and sleeping rooms in 1914. The front portion of the clubhouse was destroyed by fire in 1923 and rebuilt in 1924-25. The project was the last major commission of prominent Albany architect Albert Fuller. The clubhouse was placed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places in 2011. The club has played a role in the Albanys social and cultural life since its founding. Speakers at its events in its early years included President William Howard Taft, Andrew Carnegie, Earl Grey and various governors of New York. Our 4 lane bowling alley is one of the oldest in the country, and may also be the oldest private bowling alleys in continual use in New York State. The paintings by Walter Launt Palmer (snow scenes in the dining room and water scene in the lobby) were bequeathed the Albany Institute of History and Art with the stipulation that they be on permanent display at the club. The first woman President of the Board of Directors, Colleen M. Ryan, was elected in May, 2013.
