CHANCE TO DISPLAY PROJECTS- Warren County Youth, 5 to 19 years of age, are invited to
exhibit items they have made in school, in Scouts, or just did for fun at home at the 2013 Warren
County Youth Fair on Saturday, August 10th. All youth have the opportunity to earn ribbons. In
addition, youth 5 to 19 years of age have the opportunity to earn cash premium awards from the
New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for their work. Exhibit categories range
from creative arts, photography, clothing and textile projects, to pets, food, natural resources,
vegetable gardening, horticulture, and mechanical sciences. All projects are subject to the rules for
specific departments and fair books are currently available free of charge at the Cornell University
Cooperative Extension office during office hours of 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Thurs-
day. Judging Day for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, August 9th from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the
fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The youth and their exhibits are judged based on
the capability of the youth, and not by comparing one youth and/or exhibit against another (referred
to as the Danish system; this allows for more than one placement at each level). Some exhibits will
be selected to go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The judging experience helps youth gain
appreciation of workmanship and helps improve their skills, techniques, and confidence. The exhib-
its must be displayed for public viewing on Saturday, August 10th from 9:00AM to 4:00PM at the
fairgrounds. Exhibit entries are due to the CCE office by July 15th. For more information on how to

THE CCC CONTINUES TO REACH FOR THE STARS. The Salem Courthouse Community
Center’s newest club, the Salem Astronomers, is in its second year and continues to grow in popularity.
Under the direction of Bill Frederick, the club has attracted much interest and has a growing
membership. The club meets at the CCC at 7 pm on the third Wednesday of each month with the
objective of sharing a common interest in astronomy and learning more about the cosmos. Bill is a
hands-on club director emailing members daily with updates so they can navigate their way through
the night skies. Guest speakers of interest are invited regularly, and Bill has offered members the
opportunity to observe the night sky using the powerful telescope at his home. New members are
always welcome, and Bill invites anyone to email his recently changed address directly at

FIRST TIME JOB TRAINING- The Warren County Historical Society and Cornell Cooperative
Extension of Warren County will be hosting the Rural Heritage Festival & Youth Fair on August
10th from 9am to 5pm at the Warren County Fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg,
NY. The youth component of the Rural Heritage Festival has formally been run as the Warren
County Youth Fair for over 43 years. An important educational component at the Warren County
Fair has been the Fair Superintendent Program for youth 11 years of age and not older than 18. The
major objectives of this unique program is to provide a meaningful job experience for youth which
legitimately meets the “prior job experience” required by many employers, and to develop in
youth attributes which are important to employers and to the success of the employee on the job.
Specific attributes addressed include: positive attitudes in the areas of initiative and responsibility,
public speaking/communication, and knowledge of work place ethics. The Fair Superintendent
Program is sponsored by the Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program.
Fair Superintendents help set-up, operate and take down the Rural Heritage Festival & Youth Fair
over a period of 4 days (August 7-10). Each Fair Superintendent will be selected through an
interview process which will be held on Tuesday, July 23rd from 3:00pm – 6pm. There will also
be a Superintendent Training on Thursday, July 26th from 3:00pm – 6:30pm – please contact the
CCE office to schedule your interview. The youth are given written evaluations and recognized for
their services through the fair’s ribbons & premium process. Parents and youth interested in this
opportunity can contact Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center of Warren County

LUNCH, LEARN & PLAY FUNDING Plans are underway for
the 2013 Lunch, Learn & Play summer enrichment program for
area children at the Salem Courthouse Community Center. The six
week program will commence on Monday, July 1 and run through
Friday, August 9. Once again, the children will have the opportu-
nity to participate in the American Red Cross swim program of-
fered at Lake Lauderdale each morning returning to the CCC for a
healthy, nutritious lunch and an afternoon filled with stimulating
programs. There is no enrollment charge for LL&P, and the CCC is
hard at work seeking the necessary funds to support this program.
The CCC is located at 58 East Broadway directly across from the
school.
GOLF TOURNAMENT- August 24 Cornell Cooperative Exten-
sion will be holding its 4th Annual Golf Tournament and Silent
Auction at Cronin’s Golf Resort in Warrensburg, NY. All proceeds
from this benefit will be used to help financially support Cornell
Cooperative Extension’s educational programs. A donation of $85
per person includes: green fees, cart, chicken barbecue, goodie bag,
awards and prizes. The tournament will begin with registration at
9:15 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 10 a.m. The tournament
format is a 4-person scramble. Individual players are welcome and
will be placed within a team. New this year we will be offering at
$1,000.00 putting contest and a $500.00 Price Chopper Hole-in-
One contest. Pre-registration for tournament and barbecue is re-

BASS FISHING TOURNAMENT- Gateway House of Peace,
the first charitable hospice to give residents 24/7 care completely
free of charge, is hosting a bass fishing tournament Sunday, July
21 at Saratoga Lake to raise money in the non-profit’s quest to
open its house to residents by the end of the summer. The fishing
tournament will take place rain or shine at Lee’s Campground,
located at 1464 Route 9P on July 21. There are two people al-
lowed per boat. Registration will take place from 6—7:30 a.m.
and the tournament will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m.
Register at Saratoga Tackle (cash only) for $70 advance, which
includes $10 Lunker, or day of for $80 which also includes $10
Lunker. Cash prizes go to the top three and Lunker Pool. For

LEARN HOW IT USE TO BE DONE! From 10 AM to 4 PM on
Saturday and Sunday, July 13 – 14, learn “how it’s made” 18th
century style at a special Artificers’ Weekend at Saratoga National
Historical Park, located between Routes 4 and 32 in Stillwater,
NY. What’s an artificer? Eighteenth century artificers were
professional tradesmen working with armies to provide or repair
supplies needed by the troops. Blacksmiths made and repaired
iron and steel implements. Tailors sewed uniforms for soldiers.
Woodworkers built or fixed wooden items like boxes, benches, or
tool handles. Tinsmiths made or fixed canteens, cups. bowls, or
lanterns. If you’d like to see how common items were
manufactured in early America, well before the age of
industrialization, this is a perfect opportunity. Join us for this

NEW EXHIBIT- new exhibition opened recently at the Washing-
ton County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores in
Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in trans-
portation are documented by period photographs and artifacts.
Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers who
also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences.
Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the Champlain
Canal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south to
Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to
accommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways to
dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included wooden
boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-
use, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no
corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothing
of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and dis-
tance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores
would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart
with horse could be rented by an individual or small business
from a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches
could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some
mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores
provided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking
the General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednes-
days and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through No-
vember. It is in the Heritage Research Center at the Washington
County Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, New

SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED- Saratoga Hospital’s Volunteer
Guild recently presented its annual scholarships to five graduat-
ing seniors from local high schools – Mark Choiniere, Melissa
Podkulski, and Monata Song from Saratoga Springs High School,
Jeanette Davis from Ballston Spa High School, and Zhuo Shi
from Shenendehowa High School. All of the recipients have plans
to pursue a career in healthcare and were presented scholarships
in recognition of their academic achievements and their dedication
to volunteer work. The scholarships were recently presented at
the annual Guild Recognition Dinner.

FIREMEN PARADE & CARNIVAL- The Salem Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its annual
parade and carnival festivities. The carnival will run July 2nd through July 4th starting at 6p.m. The
parade will be on the Fourth of July. Line-up will begin at 4 p.m. sharp in front of the Holy Cross
Church on Main Street (Route 22) in Salem, NY. The parade begins at 5 p.m. sharp. The parade route
will proceed down Main Street ending on Archibald Street in front of the Fairgrounds. The theme for
the Parade this year is Music Through the Ages. The department is looking for participants in the
parade. All individuals, families, groups, departments and businesses are encouraged to join the
parade. Everyone is welcome. Come on floats, horses, cars, tractors, bicycles, or on foot. The more
creative the better. If you are interested in participating in the parade or have any questions, please

for cake donations for its very popular Cake Booth. All donations are greatly appreciated! This
year’s carnival will include new prizes, two new D.J.s and a live band on the Fourth. As always there
will be great food, including some new items such as homemade French fries, as well as fun games for
all ages, a bounce house, dunking booth and a raffle. Fireworks will be on July 4th at 9:30 p.m. So
come celebrate the Fourth of July with The Salem Volunteer Fire Department. We hope to see
everyone there!
ARTFULL WEDNESDAYS: STORYTELLING THROUGH THE ARTS! AT HUBBARD HALL.
What do an American folksong, a black and white photograph, a comic play, and a haiku poem have
in common? They’re all different mediums artists use to tell a story! Bring your imagination to share
and come explore the arts and the power of storytelling this summer with Bonnie J. Ross and
friends!
Artfull Wednesdays: Storytelling through the Arts! for ages 7-12, will take place on Wednesdays
July 3 to July 31 from 1pm to 3pm in the Beacon Feed Studio. Scheduled topics 7/3 “Worlds of
Words” (Literary arts); 7/10 “Once upon a Song” (Musical arts); 7/17 “Picture this!” (Visual arts);
7/24 “Dance Your Story” (Movement arts); 7/31 “Once upon a Story” (Theater arts). Final
performance/exhibition is Sunday, August 11 from 11am-1pm. Cost of attendance is $55/$50 for
members/$12 for single class drop-in.
Bonnie J. Ross has designed and taught summer music workshops at both Hubbard Hall and the
Greenwich Free Library since 2010. Bonnie played the violin and cello for 5 years in the Green
Mountain Youth Orchestra. In addition, she is an aspiring photographer and a freelance arts journalist.
Hubbard Hall Center for the Arts, located in a renovated 1878 rural opera house and adjacent former
freight yard complex, is a community arts center dedicated to bringing the best of the arts to the
region with year-round theater, music and dance performances and classes and workshops for all
