SAIPEM TODAY
SAIPEM TODAY IS A WORLD LEADER IN THE GLOBAL SUPPLY OF ENGINEERING, PROCUREMENT, PROJECT MANAGEMENT, CONSTRUCTION AND DRILLING SERVICES WITH DISTINCTIVE CAPABILITIES IN THE DESIGN AND EXECUTION OF LARGE-SCALE OFFSHORE AND ONSHORE PROJECTS.

Saipem has a strong bias towards oil and gas frontiers, namely activities in harsh and remote areas, in deep waters as well as in extremely cold and hot environments, applying significant technological competences in many diverse fields such as gas monetization and heavy oil exploitation. Saipem is organized in two Business Units: Engineering & Construction and Drilling.

SAIPEM ENGINEERING & CONSTRUCTION

FOLLOWING AN AGGRESSIVE GROWTH STRATEGY, WHICH INCLUDED IN THE LAST DECADE THE ACQUISITION OF MANY CONSTRUCTION, TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING COMPANIES, MOST PROMINENTLY OF SNAMPROGETTI, BOUYGUES OFFSHORE, SOFRESID AND MOSS MARITIME, SAIPEM HAS BECOME ONE OF THE WORLD LARGEST AND MOST COMPLETE ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES IN THE GLOBAL OIL AND GAS MARKETS, ONSHORE AND OFFSHORE.

Ever since its initial steps in the fifties as the construction division of Snam, the pipeline company of the Eni Group in Italy, Saipem has pursued a systematic growth strategy, based on the development of internal assets, expertise and skilled resources, as well as on the acquisition of other players with their own asset bases, such as Micoperi in late eighties, and many others. In the last decade, Saipem has continued its growth by acquiring Bouygues Offshore and Sofresid in France, Moss Maritime in Norway, IDPE in India and Snamprogetti in Italy, and by carrying out a multibillion investment program into the expansion of its offshore construction and drilling fleets. Since the year 2000, Saipems market capitalization has grown more than sixfold and its revenues tenfold.(*) The organizational integration of this considerable asset base, namely the network of engineering centres, fabrication and support yards in several continents as well as the offshore construction fleet, has been completed gradually over the years - most recently with the creation of a unified Business Unit Engineering & Construction, an entity with over 30,000 employees (excluding corporate and BU Drilling staff) from over 100 nationalities, with over 60 permanent establishments

and numerous project execution centres around the globe, and with yearly revenues exceeding 10 billion /y; all held together by outstanding project management skills. Through the involvement of our global EP(I)C hubs in Milan, Rome and Fano (Italy), Paris (France) and Chennai (India), which operate in connection with a growing number of medium size and smaller regional engineering and project execution centres employing altogether over 7,000 engineers, Saipem balances high project execution quality with a competitive cost and - most importantly - with a major emphasis on local know-how and content. This well-integrated multicenter approach provides a consistent design and robust execution philosophy on all our projects worldwide. Top priority is provided throughout to all HSEQ aspects. Saipem therefore offers a complete range of project definition and execution services, offshore and onshore, particularly for the complex mega-projects required by the market today: from feasibility and conceptual studies to complex integrated solutions combining design, engineering, procurement, field construction, fabrication and offshore

installation; also revamps, upgradings, maintenance, decommissionings, reclamations and decontaminations. Saipem today operates in virtually every world market, often in remote locations with harsh environmental conditions and challenging logistics, leveraging on its proven experience across the most significant product lines in the oil and gas production onshore, offshore, in deepwater; gas and oil transportation via offshore and onshore pipeline systems; midstream, refining, chemicals, power generation from fossil as well as from renewable sources; environmental industries, maritime works and infrastructure. This new series, therefore, outlines Saipems integrated references in engineering and construction markets offshore and onshore, according to individual business and technology lines.

SAIPEMS CONSTRUCTION FLEET: EVOLUTION AND NEW CHALLENGES

TODAY, SAIPEMS STRENGTHS IN ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION LAY IN ITS UNIQUE CAPABILITIES TO DESIGN AND EXECUTE LARGE AND COMPLEX PROJECTS FOR THE ENERGY INDUSTRY. AS ONE OF THE MAIN PILLARS OF ITS INDUSTRIAL MODEL IN THE OFFSHORE MARKETS, EVER SINCE THE FIRST STEPS IN THE FIFTIES SAIPEM HAS BUILT A UNIQUE FLEET OF PIPELAYING AND HEAVY LIFT VESSELS, BY INVESTING HEAVILY IN ASSETS, EXPERTISE, SKILLS AND PEOPLE.

Associated with worldwide platforms, sealines and field development projects, today Saipems fleet of about 40 offshore construction vessels carries out even the largest offshore and subsea installation tasks, performed either within major complex EPIC projects or as stand alone T&I contracts. Saipems fleet includes the Offshore, dedicated Caspian (page 40) and Subsea (page 48) construction vessels and the associated equipment, smaller support vessels and support yards.

THE OFFSHORE CONSTRUCTION FLEET

ONE OF THE CRITICAL FACTORS OF SUCCESS IN SAIPEMS ACHIEVEMENTS, IT HAS CONTINUOUSLY EVOLVED IN SIZE, ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY CONTENT AND OPERATIONAL CAPABILITIES, IN ORDER TO SECURE SATISFACTION TO THE CLIENTS, AND BY MOVING FURTHER THE FRONTIER OF PROJECT FEASIBILITY TO ANTICIPATE THEIR NEEDS.

10

Since the late seventies, the fleet, together with growing engineering skills, has enabled Saipem to execute the most challenging installation and pipe laying projects worldwide. In particular, the first Saipem record for the greatest depth reached was set from 1979 to 1981 by the Castoro Sei lay barge reaching the water depth of 608 m, while working on the Transmed Pipeline project across the Mediterranean Sea, from Capo Bon in Tunisia to Sicily and then across the Straits of Messina. In the heavy lifting sector, Saipem, after its supremacy held in the early 1970s with the 800 t capacity crane of Castoro 2, recaptured its leadership position with the takeover of Micoperi, completed in 1990. This acquisition brought in the M7000, later rechristened as Saipem 7000,

which became the leader of Saipems construction fleet. With her Dynamic Positioning System and 14,000 t lifting capacity, Saipem was back in contention in the offshore heavy lift market. Since then, Saipem has further renovated and strengthened its lifting fleet, by converting the late Maxita to Saipem 3000 and by positioning the 2400 t crane of the late Pearl Marine, a vessel also acquired within the Micoperi takeover, on top of a brand new stern. Saipem 3000 was also modified to improve its significant subsea and deep water capabilities, thus reaching a level of excellence within the market of the subsea field development. The Saipem 3000 is also capable of laying flexible pipelines, installing umbilicals/ mooring systems and installing subsea structures.
11

In addition to its leading role in the heavy lift market, since the mid nineties Saipem has also developed a strong experience in the installation by floatover methodology. This has given Saipem the world record of topside weight installed so far, with the Sakhalin, Russia, PA-B deck weighing more than 28,000 t. The development of this technology started with a simple lowering method of passive barge ballasting and it is now going to evolve into the super rapid active lowering via hydraulic jacks, through Saipems patented system called Anteo. In the pipe layer segment, two major Saipems vessels worth of special mention are the Castoro Sei, which is capable of laying large diameter
12

subsea pipelines, and the FDS (Field Development Ship), a special purpose vessel used in the development of deepwater fields, equipped with a dynamic positioning system, a 600 t lifting capacity crane and a vertical pipelaying system capable of operating in water depths of up to 2,000 m. The Saipem 7000 should also be added to this segment, as she has now the capability to lay subsea pipelines in ultra-deep waters by using the J-lay system, able to handle a suspended load of up to 1,450 t during pipelay operations. However, Saipems strong point of pipe laying has always been the ability to start operations both from shallow/ ultra-shallow waters (3 to 5 m of water depth) and from deep ocean

waters. Saipems fleet is unique in this respect, since it includes vessels such as S230, S355, Castoro 2, Crawler and Castoro Otto, who, although being by today old ladies, can still cover the shallow water environments very well, whereas the trio formed by the Castoro Sei, Castoro 7 and Semac 1 can exceed the depth limit of 1000 m. This limit can be further extended by the J-lay technology of the almost vertical towers of the powerful FDS, FDS2 and Saipem 7000, and by the steep lay of the new Castorone. And actually, with the J-lay technology available in Saipem, even the depth of the Mariana Trench could be reached or exceeded, with the limit only resting in the line pipe resistance.

13

14

In synthesis, Saipem now owns DP3 dynamically positioned vessels (i.e. Saipem 7000 and Saipem 3000) capable of lifting respectively up to 14,000 t and 2,200 t and of successfully completing challenging offshore installation and construction projects; dynamically positioned (i.e. Saipem 7000) and conventional (i.e. Castoro Sei, Castoro 7 and Semac 1) vessels, capable of laying pipelines with the S-lay and J-lay techniques in low and deep waters; field development ships, the Saipem FDS, capable to J-lay in deep waters and lift up to 600 t, and the new Saipem FDS 2, an evolution of her sister ship Saipem FDS, capable of developing offshore fields by J-laying and lifting up to 1,000 t in DP3 dynamic positioning. Looking at the future, Saipem is currently strengthening its fleet by completing the construction of new state-of-the-art vessels, such as the Castorone, a DP3 deepwater laying vessel for high productivity operations in extreme environments. To support the worldwide operations of its fleet as close as possible to the project sites, and therefore to secure the most reliable and timely project completion, Saipem has developed a distributed network of design centers dedicated to the engineering of

the marine operations, as well as a number of logistic, operation support and vessel maintenance bases. Also, specific centers of excellence are designated for the overall management of various vessels, such as the one in London for the Saipem 7000 and the one in Paris for Saipem FDS and Saipem FDS2 The new vessel start up is handled by the Integrated Asset Department, while specific expertise is available to projects for particular operations such as heavy lifting, float over and steep lay. With this unique breath of vessels, technologies and experience, Saipem is now able to provide all the needs of the offshore construction industry in terms of technical capabilities, competitiveness and geographical availability. Also, Saipem is preparing to face the challenges of the future Arctic operations, thanks to the experience gained in sub-Arctic regions such as Sakhalin and Arcticlike regions such as the Caspian Sea, as well as through the availability of vessels specifically outfitted for Arctic operations, like the new Castorone.

THE CASPIAN CONSTRUCTION FLEET

THE AWARD TO SAIPEM OF SEVERAL CONTRACTS WITHIN THE GIANT KASHAGAN PROJECT OFFSHORE KAZAKHSTAN HAS REQUIRED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DEDICATED OFFSHORE FLEET AS WELL AS TECHNOLOGIES/ EQUIPMENT ABLE TO MEET THE SPECIFIC INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS OF THE AREA, CHARACTERIZED BY ULTRA SHALLOW WATERS AND FREEZING TEMPERATURES IN THE WINTER SEASON.

40

The Kashagan East Field is located offshore in the Kazakhstan sector of the North Caspian Sea, approximately 80 km South of Atyrau. The first phase of the Kashagan East Field development aims to produce oil and gas from a central offshore processing facility (designated as Complex D), with a satellite production block (designated as Complex A) tied back to the main facilities. The offshore facilities include provisions for high-pressure raw gas treatment and injection into the oil reservoir. Oil and non-injected gas will be exported from Complex D to the onshore processing plants via dedicated subsea trunklines. Many vessels were developed and constructed by Saipem for the tasks required by the Pile & Flare contract, the trunklines installation and the hook up. The vessels were in some cases built in the Caspian area, in other cases they were built outside the area, and then transported to and finally assembled in Caspian yards. To this end, Saipem also built a fabrication yard in Kurik, utilised as well for logistic support to the operations. This fleet, thanks to advanced laying and trenching technologies, is capable of operating in low waters, high temperature ranges, harsh and difficult environments. It includes the lifting barge Ersai 1, used for the construction / lifting

tasks, as well as the Castoro 12, the trenching barge Castoro 16 and the Mondine/ Storione equipment, dedicated to the pipeline installation work. Other vessels such as Ersai 2, Ersai 3 and Ersai 4 perform continuous construction activities for the hookup, assisted by the floatel barge Ersai 400 and others. Other minor vessels were engaged during the offshore operations on a hiring base, upon request by the management of the different projects.

41

Because of the physical and environmental characteristics of the Caspian Sea, the design and construction of safe vessels and technologies with a low environmental impact became a primary objective for the entire Kazakhstans Kashagan project. Low environmental impact solutions for pipelaying and burying in the presence of ice and very shallow waters have been designed, built, tested and operated. Trunklines have been installed under the seabed by minimizing the amount of excavated soil. Saipem developed not only a dedicated fleet, but also new equipment and tools fitting the needs of the project, such as a system allowing to pull strings of pipes up to 9 km long, to tow them to the laying position while floating, to plunge, to trench and to post-trench them. An additional patented system has been developed to maintain the trajectory of the pipe during launching. In particular, Saipem developed a system of small ultra-light posttrenching and backfilling vessels initially called Mondine (Italian for rice weeders), now TRB Tenders, designed for operations in the transition zone, where no other craft can operate.
42

They enable the excavation of a trench of the desired depth and the burying of the pipe at the same time using the excavation material for backfill without contaminating the surrounding environment. The pipes are covered by the excavated soil to protect the pipe from ice, leaving the seabed as flat as possible and minimising the environmental impact. This new system allowed to avoid the dredging of a wide canal to enable the access to standard vessels, which would have required the excavation of huge amounts of soil with serious physical and biological effects, especially on the seabed sediments and on the benthic community.

THE SUBSEA CONSTRUCTION FLEET

THE PRESENT AND FUTURE CHALLENGES OF SUBSEA FIELD DEVELOPMENTS IN EVER DEEPER WATERS REQUIRE A GREAT DEAL OF EXPERTISE AS WELL AS SUITABLE ASSETS.

48

When Saipem acquired the Sonsub Group (with offices in Australia, Norway, the USA and Scotland) in 1998, it gained access to the world of subsea interventions by securing the equipment (ROV - Remotely Operated Vehicles) and the skills needed to enter the new era of deepwater sites. Sonsub, now integrated in Saipem, owns more than thirty vehicles, most of which are in-house manufactured Innovators. In addition to technical equipment, Saipems ROV operating personnel based in Aberdeen, Houston and Stavanger boast a top-notch reputation in the subsea construction sector. The unit in charge of designing special vehicles and improving existing systems is located in Marghera (Venice, Italy). The huge ROV and Subsea Construction Fleet owned by Saipem is used both as a support to wider scope Saipem projects, as well as for stand alone subsea work contracts (ref. to the dedicated Saipem

brochure on subsea projects). Saipem therefore enjoys a strong position in this market, thanks to its use of highly sophisticated technologies, such as subsea ROVs and speciallyequipped robots capable of carrying out complex deep-water pipeline operations. Vessels such as the Far Samson, Normand Cutter, Bourbon Pearl and Grampian Surveyor - either directly owned by Saipem or through long term lease contracts - are navigating the various oceans and seas engaging in several complex installation activities. Typical subsea works performed both in shallow, normal and deep waters span from umbilical/ cable/ flexible installation to flying leads/ jumpers positioning, from structures and manifold to subsea process units and mooring installations, with significant time spent also for general support provided in DP class 3 mode.
