Red Cross fundraiser blends fitness and health awareness
The Claremont Chapter of the American Red Cross is inviting members of the community to run through the Claremont Colleges on Sunday morning to help contribute to disaster preparedness and relief efforts. Consisting of a 1K kids run, a 5K run and a 10K run, the 2010 Run for the Red will promote health and community with all proceeds going to the Claremont Red Cross. Check-in and same-day registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday. The kids run will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the 5K and 10K races at 8:30 and 9 a.m. A Health, Safety and Preparedness Fair will be held at the Greek Theater from 8 a.m. to noon. Pre-registration fees are $30 for the 10K, $25 for the 5K and $15 for the kids 1K. Same day registration rates are $5 more. Excellence in Design awards

The Claremont Architectural Commission announced the winners of the 29th Annual Excellence in Design Awards, a program designed to recognize recently completed projects that best reflect the citys standards of design excellence. Seven projects have earned awards in the categories of New Construction, Renovation, Addition, Sustainable Landscaping, and Restorative Landscaping. The winners are: Claremont McKenna Colleges Biszantz Family Tennis Center; 601 E. Foothill Boulevard Commercial Building; Claremont University Consortiums Honnold Library; Scripps Colleges Sicilian Court; McDermott Building; Shafer residence; CGU Residence. Mental illnesses are real, treatable and surprisingly common

One in 5 Californians will experience a mental illness at some time in their lives. Mental illness can be triggered by a chemical imbalance, a single traumatic event, or by normal, everyday stressors that go unchecked. May is Mental Health Month, and Tri-City Mental Health Center wants to remind residents that emotional wellness is critical to overall well-being, and that mental health is just as important as physical health. Among new programs offered is a 12-step program for individuals in dual recovery of alcohol and drugs, the only program of its type within a 50-mile radius. On Mondays from 2:30 to 4 p.m., Urban League representatives are on site to help people with summer job placement. Beginning in June, Social Security representatives will visit once a month to offer help and answer questions regarding obtaining SSI benefits. Tri-City was created by the cities of Pomona, La Verne, and Claremont in 1960 as a Joint Powers Authority to provide high quality, culturally competent behavioral health care

New club hopes Claremont will take them seriously
he Packing House just got a whole lot funnier. Over the weekend, about 250 visitors made their way to Claremont for the grand opening of the Flappers comedy club.
The second story venue has room for 85 guests, making for an intimate environment for visitors. Food and drinks are served from the nearby Hip Kitty. The comedy club has agreed to book shows throughout the summer in what organizers have described as a trial run. If the shows are successful, Flappers hopes to rent the first floor space the Claremont Museum of Art once occupied. If people in Claremont like the idea of a comedy club here, they should come down and show some support, said Jerry Tessier, whose Arteco Partners renovated the Packing House. If its to continue, it will be largely determined on the number of people and response we get from the community. On Friday and Saturday night, comedian Bill Dwyer headlined the 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. shows. Mr. Dwyer was a finalist on Last Comic Standing and appeared on Late Night with Conan and HBO. To kick off the grand opening on Friday night, Mr. Tessier christened the stage while dressed as a priest by splashing his vodka tonic on stage. I now pronounce this heathen den of comedy open for business, Mr. Tessier said. His introduction was followed by performances by

MC and co-owner Dave Reinitz and feature act Vanessa Graddick. Ms. Graddick will also lead regular comedy classes for those interested in learning the art of stand-up. She will teach 6-weeks courses on comedy for beginners and intermediate performers. In August, Flappers will open another location in Burbank. Co-owner Barbara Holliday said she is hopeful to get enough support locally to open a permanent location in Claremont. With its 1920s artsy vibe, the Packing House just seems like a perfect fit for our concept, Ms. Holliday said. Were really hoping to make it work so we can open here permanently. Claremonters Mike and Mary Becquet walked
from their Village area home to be a part of the grand opening show on Friday night. Its a very intimate atmosphere, Ms. Becquet said. Im glad theyre using the Packing House. We love to go to comedy shows in Ontario or Pasadena. Now we have one in our own backyard. Id definitely recommend it as something fun to do, Mr. Becquet added. This weekends show includes headliner Michael Rayner who has been seen on Bananas and David Letterman. The following weekend on May 28 and 29, Flappers welcomes headliner Tom Clark. Claremont partners for Relay for Life
ccording to Claremont/La Verne Relay for Life co-chair Cynthia Vant Hul, this years relay has the chance to be the biggest ever.
With a Hawaiian theme entitled, Re-Lei for the Cure, this years Relay for Life will be a historic one as both Claremont and La Verne are officially joining together for the first time to help increase cancer awareness and raise funds to help fight cancer on May 22nd and 23rd at Claremont High School track. We wanted to give La Verne its due for all of the work theyve done over the years, Ms. Vant Hul said. Claremont has had a friendly challenge with La Verne over the past few years and it has been really successful. This is the first year that this event is officially called the Claremont/La Verne Relay for Life and both cities are excited about this event. Ms. Vant Hul said it took a significant amount of effort for the joint venture to become a reality as the American Cancer Society had different plans for La Verne this year. The American Cancer Society wanted La Verne to do its own relay this year, but we had to convince them that without the challenge, it wouldnt be as successful, she explained. This was something that I really fought for and so did my friend Jeannette [Vagnozzi] before the American Cancer Society fi-

nally allowed it. Were very excited. The relay is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and will continue through 9 a.m. on Sunday. The 24-hour event will include 33 teams walking the track in relay fashion in order to raise money, a survivors lap to honor cancer survivors, a luminaria ceremony to honor the memory of people who died from cancer, both opening and closing ceremonies, and a plethora of activities and entertainment. Claremont and La Verne participants have already raised more than $13,000. By scheduling the event one week after many Relay for Life events around the country, Ms. Vant Hul hopes to attract many more participants to CHS this weekend. Were really proud of the committee and Im hoping to take the best of all the relays that Ive attended over the past 7 years and put it into this event, she said. Relay for Life began in the mid-1980s when a colorectal surgeon named Dr. Gordy Klatt wanted to increase the income of his local American Cancer Society Office in Tacoma, Washington. In 1985, Dr. Klatt circled the track at the University of Puget Sound for 24 hours and raised $27,000. One year later, the first team relay event was held and has since become nationally celebrated with more than 4200

Immigration debate heard loud and clear at Pomona College graduation
t was certainly a memorable affair for the 117th graduating class of Pomona College. Some 300 protesters turned up the volume at Sunday mornings ceremony, speaking out against Pomonas commencement speaker Janet Napolitano.
Ms. Napolitano is the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under President Barack Obama and a former Arizona governor. Protesters charge that families have been torn apart due to raids and increased cooperation between federal and local law enforcement agencies as promoted by Ms. Napolitanos policies. Calling themselves the May 16th Coalition, the protesters were a mix of community organizations, labor unions, immigrant workers and advocacy groups. Janet Napolitano is not welcome in California if she is going to keep ripping apart families, if she is going to keep deporting hard workers and if is going to keep violating the ideals of justice and equality that she is supposed to stand for, said Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles. About halfway through the quiet graduation ceremony, the protesters marched from Shelton Park along College Avenue and congregated on the steps of the Carnegie Building across the street from the ceremony. With drums and megaphones, their chants could be clearly heard at the ceremony nearby. Some 60 graduating students and faculty wore white sashes in solidarity with the protesters. Ms. Napolitano congratulated the graduating class before touching on the immigration debate in her commencement speech. The status quo is simply not acceptable, Ms. Napolitano said. We all recognize that the current system is not working. That our immigration laws need to change. Our nation needs immigration reform that works for all elements of our society. We are a nation of immigrants, she added. We are also a nation of laws. So we are committed, I am committed, to working together towards a comprehensive reform that gives us an immigration system that both respects our historic tradition and that fits the demands of the 21st century. After handing out 375 diplomas to the graduating class, Pomona College President David Oxtoby also spoke out on the immigration debate during his Charge to the Class of 2010. We are one countrythose who carry a document that lets them stay, study, and work here, and those who by virtue of being undocumented live in constant fear of deportation, Mr. Oxtoby said. This country benefits from the ideas, the skills, and the hard work of those who do or do not bear proper documents. We need to recognize that

City loses longtime police department presence
ongtime Claremont Police Captain Gary Jenkins has been selected to head the police department in Pullman, Washington.
Once confirmed by the Pullman city council, Cpt. Jenkins will be leaving the Claremont Police Department sometime in mid-July. Hes been a part of the organization for nearly 33 years, making him the longest tenured city employee. Cpt. Jenkins grew up in Claremont and graduated from Claremont High School in 1974. After a brief stint working for the West Covina Police Department as a non-sworn officer, he was hired by the Claremont Police Department in 1977 at the age of 21. Cpt. Jenkins moved up the ranks of the department, working in and supervising the different divisions. In 1981, he took over as commander of the Detective Bureau and was instrumental in upgrading training procedures and the separtments ability to handle its own homicide cases. Before then, the cases were all handled by the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department. In 2006, he was promoted to the position of captain and today oversees the operations bureau, which includes patrol, traffic and detective bureaus. During an interview Monday, Cpt. Jenkins spoke of some of the memorable moments on the job working in Claremont law enforcement. In recent years, he worked on security with U.S. secret service for visiting dignitaries including former President Bill Clinton, Karl Rove and Justice Antonin Scalia. In 1989 as a detective, he helped locate a gang member who murdered a 19-year-old man walking with a friend in El Barrio Park. He developed a friendship with the victims mother and accompanied her for moral support at her sons killers parole hearings. There were also disturbing moments on the job. Once he was the first officer to arrive at a gruesome crime scene where a murder victim was shot in his car. A few years later, he pulled over a motorist who committed suicide in his presence by shooting himself in the head. Those are things I will probably never forget, he said. It is still unclear what will happen to Cpt. Jenkins position when he leaves the department. moved. Just 2 years ago, there were 2 police captain positions. Police commissioners at their latest meeting drafted a letter to the city council asking them to spare the remaining captain position and end further cuts to the Claremont Police Department. Commissioner Barbara Musselman said sworn officers have already been cut from 42 to 36, putting Claremonts police force at levels not seen since 1984. At the time, Claremonts population was about 30 percent smaller than today. In terms of priorities for the community, we ask for a good education for our children and safety for the community, Ms. Musselman said. Reducing still another position leaves the chief with absolutely no executive staff. Pullman is a small town with a population of approximately 28,000 residents and home to Washington State University. About 8 miles to the east is the University of Idaho.
Cpt. Jenkins believes working in Claremont has given him tools to be an effective police chief in the northwest college town. Its a college community and theres an involved citizenry thats very active in the local community, he said. So working here in a community with high expectations and the college environment, it really has prepared me for what theyre looking for in a chief. Cpt. Jenkins still needs to undergo the final stage of the selection process, including background, polygraph and psychological tests. Once the process is complete, Cpt. Jenkins can be appointed to the job next month. Some days are better than others, but for the most part I can say Ive enjoyed every day working here, he said. This city has always been good to me, so I consider myself very lucky to have been here for so long.

Ms. Vant Huls special attachment to Relay for Life is the result of the support she received after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2001. The former City of Claremont employee received financial assistance from the Claremont community during her treatments in 2002, as well as funding for treatment through the American Cancer Society. One year later, she participated in her first Relay for Life. Based on the way that the city of Claremont helped me and my family, I vowed to stay in the city of Claremont and help them with Relay for Life, Ms. Vant Hul said. And when I was going through my treatments in 2002, I didnt know about the American Cancer Society, but I found out my medicine was supported through them and they also provided support groups. Thats why Im so excited to give back. Ms. Vant Huls story is just one among the hundreds of participants expected at CHS this weekend. Making nature easyor too easy?

arilee Scaff was right. Matinees are made for rainy days and when its too hot to do anything
No, Ms. Scaff, who is active in the Pilgrim Place community, and I werent talking about movie-going experiences. We werent talking about the benefits of having a cinema in the Village. I cant even say we were talking. What happened was that Ms. Scaff saw me at an event one evening last month, and she told me that she had something for me. She gave me a flyer, on the side of which she had written, Johncome if you can! It was right there. I knew then that Ms. Scaff most likely thinks, as I have been thinking lately, that it is better to be out-of-doors rather than in a dark movie theater on these bright, sunny, balmy Spring days that we have been having. And not just outdoors, but out in nature, out in a natural setting. The flyer wasnt about a nature hike or an outdoor activity. It was about a meeting. The meeting was indoors, on a Saturday morning, but it could lead to more outdoor experiences, in a natural setting, for us in Claremont. The meeting was put on by the League of Women Voters of the Claremont Area, in which Ms. Scaff has been quite active for a long time. The League has been given a grant by the San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy to study how the Thompson Creek Spreading Grounds, a 120acre parcel of undeveloped land adjacent to the southern border of the Claremont Wilderness Park, may be protected for groundwater recharge, habitat restoration and low-impact public access trail. In short, and perhaps a bit too simply, the meeting was about the possibility of expanding the Claremont Wilderness Park. I was not able to make it to the meeting, buthow did Ms. Scaff know?it dealt with something Im very interested in, and I was heartened to know that

it went on (I also read the account of it in these pages). I have been thinking about the Wilderness Park and how it can be expanded, at least in terms of who can use it, if not also in size. My concern is about how low-impact the trails should be. How much can their impact be expanded before they are no longer low-impact? This spring, I have been on a quest of sorts. I have gone to several parks and natural areas in the greater Los Angeles area. Part of this has been about finding a more healthful, more refreshing way to spend a nice day. Its not that I no longer love the theater and movies and other city doings and am suddenly going all Nature Boy. In fact, if I had the energy, a perfect day for me would be to tramp around in some verdant fields during the day, perhaps with a picnic, and then to go out to dinner and a play in one of the dozens of small theaters in and around L.A. That this is possible is one of the great things about living in the Los Angeles Basin. In any case, in my search for nice adventures out on nice days, rather than going to another matinee, I checked out a few places. Last month, I wrote about going to Santa Monica Creek State Park near Calabassas. As I noted at the time, it was pretty gorgeous and not too far, but it was still a drive, and the popular trail that I went on ended up being more difficult than I had in mind in my wheelchair. Another trip was to the new state park in Baldwin Hills. This was intriguinga state park smack in the
middle of the big cityand, perhaps not surprisingly, it was more urban than I liked, with many large picnics and parties going on. There was, however, a quieter meadow-like area on top with short, easy paths and spectacular, panoramic views of L.A. and Hollywood. While not as far as Santa Monica Creek, it was a bit of a trip, and the slow drive home on the 10 that Saturday afternoon was a major drag. I think my favorite place so far has been Eaton Canyon Natural Area in Altadena. It was particularly nice to discover that admission is freeespecially after finding out that it costs $20 to go to the Huntington Library and Gardens in the same Pasadena areaalthough how this is done, since its a county facility, is a mystery to me. The few trails that Ive been on arent too difficult, and, in addition to abundant flowers right now and close-up views of the foothills, there is a nice, shallow, noisy creek that I like to sit by. This is a nice outing that is relatively close, but on my second Saturday afternoon there, the traffic coming home on the 210 was so bad that it was almost ruined. But why drive like this? Why make these trips not to mention pay for and consume all the gas they require and also the pollution they causeand risk getting stuck in traffic? (The days of 5-o-clock traffic on weekdays are long gone. Traffic now happens anytime, if not all the time.) After all, the Claremont Wilderness Park, offering a true nature experience, is right here. The trouble is that, although I love the park and love how it makes me feel like Im far away, the trail is a real challenge and a literal pain in my wheelchair. Yes, I merely push a joystick, not straining my legs, but, with all the rocks and hard bumpsnot to mention a lot of ruts and a stream crossing the trailI get

Brown v. Board of Education

Dear Editor: Today, May 17, 2010, is the 56th anniversary of the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education decision handed down by the Supreme Court. I feel it is vital that we all, as a people, remember that wonderful day when we took a giant step as a nation toward being a democracy, when centuries of slavery, bigotry and lies were given a symbolic slap in the face. Today, I am worried that it is more symbolic than a reality. I am extremely grateful and proud of the progress we have made regarding civil rights, but I am also appalled at some of the things that I still see happening; the racist policies regarding ethnic studies in the state of Arizona; the fact that we have politicians supporting Confederate History Month in various areas of the country; the fact that we had a major religion giving millions of dollars supporting another violation of civil rights in Proposition 8 (and somehow keeping their tax-exempt status in the process); and I hear people questioning Elena Kagan as an appointee to the Supreme Court because, and I quote, She might be gay. What happened to the idealism of our nation? Why are we still allowing bigotry (racial and religious) to guide our decisions? As a life-long civil rRights activist, I

No drilling
Dear Editor: The League of Women Voters of the Claremont Area urges residents to write to our U.S. senators and ask them to reconsider any plans to include expanded offshore oil and gas exploration and drilling in any legislation. In light of the events surrounding the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico, ask our senators to oppose efforts to expand offshore oil and gas drilling off all of our coasts. Expanding exploration and drilling into previously protected and remote areas are unacceptable approaches to filling our need for energy especially since it is clear that we are not capable
of responding to oil spills in a timely manner. The human, economic and environmental catastrophe is proof that we must end our addiction to oil, enact a firm limit on carbon pollutants and ensure this type of disaster never happens again. The current oil spill, starting as a tragic loss of 11 lives, now has the potential to be one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. Offshore drilling raises numerous questions about the safety and environmental safeguards that are intended to protect our coastlines. If we cannot contain an oil spill in the very temperate Gulf of Mexico, how can we have any faith that a similar disaster does not await the exploratory drilling planned for the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas in the extreme conditions of the Arctic Ocean where we already know technology does not exist to clean up a spill in icy water? The energy bill reported by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, the American Clean Energy Leadership of 2009, reverses the bipartisan agreement reached in 2006 Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act.
The language would allow drilling within 10 miles of the Florida coast and shrink the current 125-mile-wide buffer elsewhere along Floridas west coast to 45 miles. As the League of Women Voters suggests, please preserve the physical, chemical and biological integrity of the ecosystem, with maximum protection of public health and the environment. The Senate has a profound responsibility to build a new clean energy future for our nation without sacrificing our oceans and coasts in the process. Now is the time for strong clean energy and climate policy.

jostled and jarred; a serious and brutal workout. I once did the entire loop and ended up, after 2 hours, exhausted and sore. Yes, theres the Thompson Creek Trail, which is nice but more urban than I want, and I always feel like Im sneaking through peoples backyards. I also like the Botanical Gardens, but they are more laid-out than I have in mind. Besides, the $8 admission fee is now hard to swallow after its being free for years and years. And, yes, getting into the wilderness, almost by definition, should be challenging, but does it have to be so chal-
lenging, especially when its so close? Would it hurt to make the Wilderness Park here less challenging? Would it hurt to pave the trail? Thats my suggestion for the Claremont Wilderness Park and how it may be expandedto pave the trail. I suggest this, even as I recall a ranger scolding me years ago when I complained that a wheelchair-accessible trail in Zion National Park wasnt accessible enough (he also opined that President Ronald Reagans controversial Secretary of the Interior, James Watt, was a great man). I suggest this, even as I wonder if paving the trail and expanding its accessibility and use makes it
less of a wilderness park? I also suggest this thinking of the Nimitz Trail, which I discovered a few years ago and which is one of my new favorite places. It is a paved trailactually a closed-off roadalong the top of Tilden Park, starting off at Inspiration Point, in the hills above Berkeley. Yes, the walk is easy, and there are great views of San Francisco Bay and
the Bay Area, but, with miles of hills, fields and groves, it certainly looks and feels like being out in nature, even out in the wild. Even so, I have no doubt that the idea of paving the wilderness park trail (actually, it is a road) will horrify some. Thats okay. As long as its considered. Anyway, summer is coming, and it will soon enough be time to hit the matinee.

Rebecca T. Rollins
Rebecca (Becky) Therese Rollins of Claremont died on May 9, 2010 at the age of 58, surrounded by family and friends, part of the community she lovingly nurtured and valued throughout her life. Born on September 27, 1951 in Hallock, Minnesota, Ms. Rollins showed her aptitude for playing piano at an early age. Her talent was most certainly strengthened from the beginning by her mothers words, You can wash the dishes or practice piano. Ms. Rollins earned her Bachelor of Arts in music education and performance from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and her Master of Arts in music history from the University of Minnesota. At Bethel College in the early 70s, she met her first husband, Roy Rollins, who majored in conducting and shared her interest in music. They divorced in 1985. At Bethel College, Ms. Rollins also met Glenace Edwall, who said of her, It was the first time I ever met a genuine prodigy. They were friends for 40 years. Moving to California in 1979, Ms. Rollins love of music led to her brilliant, 30-year teaching career at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo where she focused on her piano students and her music history classes, with an emphasis on women composers. Norm Weston, a professor at Saddleback College who knew Ms. Rollins for 20 years, remarked that, She was a huge part of the cultural, musical and academic life of the college. Rebecca had different lives and they were all so rich. It was amazing how many friends she hadnot just college professors, but her students and the surrounding community. She has a whole legacy of students who now pass on her love of teaching in their lives. Ms. Rollins cared deeply about her students, making friendships with some that have lasted over 25 years. In her office there is a map where she pinned her students pictures to their cities and countries, said Mr. Weston. She was admired and loved by so many people in her work. In addition to teaching music, Ms. Rollins joy in music broadened to include a professional career as a performer. In 1986, she received her Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from Claremont

voted to her friends whom she met through her many interestsmusic, teaching, performance, church, dancing, political and environmental activism, spirituality and travel. For Ms. Rollins, what mattered most were people and doing things that made the world a more just and beautiful place. Beyond teaching, beyond performance, Ms. Rollins modeled to her students, to her colleagues, and to her friends and family, how to live with passion and integrity, said her longtime friend, Elizabeth Bennett. In 1998, Ms. Rollins married Gerald (Jerry) Taylor, a professor at Cal Poly Pomona. They were described by family and friends as soul mates, sharing their love of nature, music and travel. Mr. Taylor was warmly welcomed into Rebeccas family and extensive network of friends. He mentioned that, When we started going together, I was amazed by the diversity, magnitude and longevity of her friendships and by how she worked so incessantly to keep in contact with everyone. She made sure each time we traveled to Minnesota that we would visit as many of them as possible. Ms. Rollins loved entertaining and bringing people together. She and her husband were known for their hospitality, and her joy in celebrating with great music, food and conversation was infectious. She was particularly known for her pizza and pasta meals. In addition, she had a reputation as a meticulous scorekeeper in the Canasta games that she, her husband and their friends delighted in playing. Ms. Rollins is survived by her husband, Gerald O. Taylor Jr. of Claremont; by her parents, Mahlon and Ramona Waller of Northome, Minnesota; by her brother Timothy Waller of Blackduck, Minnesota; by her brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Beth Waller of Park Rapids, Minnesota; and by her nephews, nieces, grandnieces, grandnephew and goddaughter. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Christ Church Parish in Ontario, and on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Dora Lake Alliance Church in Northome, Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rebecca T. Rollins Student Music Scholarship being established at Saddleback College or to the International Myeloma Foundation.
Graduate University where she studied with John Steele Ritter. After earning her doctorate, she traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, lecturing on and performing the music of women composers, a field in which she was widely recognized as a scholar. A versatile musician, Ms. Rollins performed in solo and duo piano recitals, and with singers, instrumentalists and spoken word artists. Ms. Rollins made 2 recordings, Playing the Ivory Moon, which includes solo piano music by 6 woman composers, and Clearings in the Sky, which features vocal music by Lili Boulanger, with soprano Patrice Michaels. She also contributed to a number of recordings including playing organ on Ancient Verse, Holy Song. Her friend, Robert Sage, a pianist with whom she performed for 20 years said, Rebecca was an excellent pianist and sight reader. Each year we strived to present a unique program such as Walt Disneys Fantasia shown on a screen behind us as we played the music, plus 4-handed and piano duets. Ms. Rollins love of music extended to her church. She was the organist for Christ Church Episcopal Parish in Ontario for 27 years. Her longtime friend, Jan Aldrich, commented, She was an incredibly gifted and skilled musician. Though she would say the organ was not her primary instrument, she was equal to the finest organist Ive heard. Talented as Ms. Rollins was as a musician and teacher, perhaps her greatest gift was her skill in creating community. Throughout her life, she held friendship and community as a priority. She was de-

hen I was in high school, back in the 1970s (you remember: Quiana knits, the Partridge Family, the Bicentennial), it seemed like most of the electives available to young women were stereotypical offerings such as typing (only one boy in my class), home economics (how to macram pot hangers and plan healthy mealsno boys in my class), and cooking (no boys in there, either, which may explain my husbands thinking that lobster should comprise the big, bottom portion of the food pyramid). One thing we never learned, however, was how to replace a toilet paper roll, and so, I wonder, how this became a near-exclusive mom job. I have interviewed several subjects on this matter and my completely unscientific survey suggests that moms are usually always the family member who replaces the toilet paper when it runs out...and, the paper towels, the toothpaste, the soap in the dispenser, the milk in the refrigerator, etc. (Ironically, though hes loathe to change a roll, my husband has found a use for the empty cardboard centershes cutting them in half, filling them with dirt and using them as seed starters for our summer garden.) In the domain of mom there are many such jobs
that are untenable to the rest of the family. I have near exclusive rights to machines that wash or dry, stitch or iron. My son can, and does, whip-up an incredible milk shake, almost nightly using a small appliance. In addition to the fact that I am insanely jealous of the metabolism of a 16 year-old boy who plays high school sports nearly 2 hours every day and can eat ice cream with impunity, I am also the only person who seems to understand that the ice cream needs to go back in the freezer, and, that the blender has 6 parts, all of which need to be washed separately (not rinsed off with a cursory swirl of water while theyre all still attached). My mother often wondered aloud if things were
going to clean themselves or put themselves away and now I understand that these werent the rants of a crazed woman who also raked shag carpeting. The first time I tried to change the toilet paper roll, the whole spring-loaded contraption came flying apart, so I left a little pile of pieces on the sink and skulked away, hoping that my moms Columbo-like instincts wouldnt place me as the guilty party. I know every generation tries to give their children more than they hadmy parents prided themselves on owning a home and they encouraged us to go to college and make more of ourselves. My hope for my children is that someday they come to view: the empty milk carton as something that needs to be removed from the refrigerator (not shaken and placed back on the shelf), the curled-up toothpaste roll as something that has nothing left for the next user, and the empty paper roll as something other than a potential spyglass. Oh, all right, if one of them becomes a doctor, thats okay too.

Lees improved score enough for a national title
laremont-Mudd-Scripps mens golfer Tain Lee had already proved he was one of the best as a freshman when he placed 8th at last years Division III NCAA Golf Championships. Last Friday, he showed what a difference a year could make.
Leading the way throughout the 4-day championship event in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Lee made
history by improving on last years score by 5 strokes and won this years NCAA Division III crown by shooting a 280good for 7 strokes under par. Along with winning the first golf individual national championship in school history, the C-M-S sophomore won the Division III Arnold Palmer Award for earning medalist honors at the championships. Lee was also selected for the 2nd straight year as a Ping Division III First Team All-American. In order to win the championship, Lee had to unseat the University of La Vernes Mitchell Fedorka,
last years national champion. Leading by just one stroke on Friday after a bogey on the 10th hole, Lee recorded 3 birdies in his final 8 holes to clinch the match. Other accomplishments for the C-M-S sophomore this season include winning the Kingsmen Invitational for the 2nd straight season in late March by scoring 221 points (+5) and finishing as the top individual golfer in the SCIAC Championship on April 26th with a score of 139 (-5).

CHS VOLLEYBALL IN CIF The Claremont High School Mens Volleyball team hosted Westlake High School at CHS last night in the semifinals of the Division 3 CIF Volleyball Playoffs. A win would place them in the finals at Cypress College this Saturday, May 22. Check COURIER reporter Landus Rigsbys sports blog at couriersportsbeat.blogspot.com for an update on their CIF standing. HONORING MR. B Ben Bollinger, who founded the Citrus College Citrus Singers in 1968, will be honored this Saturday to mark his fifth year since retirement. The Citrus College Performing Arts Department will unveil a legacy wall featuring a bronze replica of his hands in the Haugh Performing Arts Center at Citrus College in Glendora. A reception and refreshments will be offered in the courtyard of the music building from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The legacy wall will be unveiled outside the music room at 7 p.m. Mr. Bollinger is also well-known as the owner of the local dinner theater, the Candlelight Pavilion. Additionally, Citrus music students will perform a pop show at 8 p.m., during which all past Citrus Singers will join in singing the final song of the second act on the stage with the current Citrus Singers under the direction of Doug Austin. An informal gathering is planned at T-Phillips in Glendora where you can relax, visit with Mr. B and enjoy the
