“Reform Valley” County Fair

Due Date:
50 points in History

Quiz Date:

This project will focus on the “Age of Reform” in the nineteenth century. On Thursday,
April 1, we will have a county fair, at which there will be “booths” for each movement.
You will work in groups of two or three, and a lottery will decide the reform movement
on which you will focus—abolitionism, pro-slavery, women’s suffrage/rights,
temperance, education, mental asylums/prisons, utopian communities (ie: Mormons,
etc.), or health reforms (phrenology, etc.). Each group will create pamphlets and posters
to explain/highlights their cause, and will give a 3-5 minute presentation on their
particular movement. On ________, there will be a quiz on the material from every
group’s pamphlets and presentations.

You will have 3 full blocks to research and prepare your projects/presentations. On
Thursday, you MUST have the following:

1. PAMPHLETS (25 copies—enough for every student and teacher)

The pamphlet should be done in Microsoft Publisher, look professional, be eye-

catching, and be properly proofread. In addition, it should contain the following:

• The pamphlet should have a definite slant—you are trying to entice your
audience to “join” your cause.
• The pamphlet should define the main goals and history of the movement.
• The pamphlet should highlight the main people involved in the movement.
• The pamphlet should have two quotations from prominent people in the
movement. (2 quotes total—1 each from your two prominent people in the
history of your movement.)

2. BOOTHS

Each group will have an area of the classroom as their booth at the fair. Your area
needs to have at least two posters or other visual aid that highlight main information
about your cause and entice people to your booth.

3. PRESENTATIONS

The presentations should be 3-5 minutes in length and should highlight the main
beliefs of your cause as well as try to convince people to join in your crusade.
