First Quarter 1. Sentence a group of words that expresses a complete thought. Every sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period, question mark or exclamation point. 2. Statement - tells something. It ends with a period. 3. Question asks something. It ends with a question mark. 4. Command tells someone to do something. It ends with a period. 5. Request politely asks someone to do something. It ends with a period. 6. Exclamation expresses a strong feeling. It ends with an exclamation point. 7. Nouns names of persons, places, things, animals, and events. 8. Common Noun names a type of person, place or thing. It begins with a small letter. 9. Proper Noun - names a particular person, place or thing. It begins with a capital letter. 10. Abbreviation is the shortened form of a word used to represent the full form. A period is usually used after each abbreviation. 11. Singular Noun names one person, place, thing, or idea. 12. Plural Noun names more than one person, place, thing or idea. 13. Some Rules on forming Plural of Nouns : Add s to most singular nouns. Examples : book-books flower-flowers bag-bags Add es to nouns ending in s, ss, x, z, ch, sh. Examples: bus-buses glass-glasses quiz quizzes match-matches fox-foxes bush-bushes

With nouns ending with a consonant and y, change y to I and add es Examples: candy candies body bodies With nouns ending with a vowel and y, just add s. Examples: boy boys day days Most nouns ending with f and fe, add s; to some change f or fe to v and add es. Examples: leaf leaves life lives belief beliefs reef reefs Nouns ending with a vowel and an o, add s Examples: bamboo bamboos video videos Nouns ending with a consonant and o, generally add s, but sometimes es. Examples: piano pianos potato potatoes

Some irregular nouns change spelling in the plural form Examples: man men child children foot feet Some irregular nouns keep their spelling Examples: deer deer sheep sheep 14. Count Noun can be counted. It forms its plural by adding s or es. 15. Mass Nouns cannot be counted. They form their plural with the use of counters. 16. Quantifier expresses amount or quantity.
