Nunavut Youth Leadership Program

July 14-30, 2013

Program Overview
This program is designed to encourage youth to discover what is uniquely strong about them as people and how they can use those assets to help them on their journeys into adulthood. Nine youth ages 14-18 will be selected to participate in this program. The program is 17 days long and includes a multi-day camping component. The program will start with an opening ceremony in Iqaluit, followed by several days of workshops on the themes of leadership and land stewardship. The group will then fly to Mt. Joy, Katannilik Territorial Park and will paddle 60 km on the Soper River, portage boats, navigate rapids and spend time living together on the Land. After the river portion of the program the group will complete a community service project near Kimmirut and spend several days on the Land with local Elders doing cultural activities. The program structure and curriculum has been designed in collaboration with community members in Iqaluit and Kimmirut based on the following key learning objectives: leadership, resilience and environmental stewardship. This program is designed for youth who are motivated to push their limits, to discover their strengths and to work together as an inclusive community during their adventure. While the program is designed to be a very fun and engaging adventure on the Land, it will also be physically challenging at times. Two thirds of the way through their journey, the students will have a 1km portage around Soper Falls, which is impassable by raft. This will likely be the most challenging aspect physically, but also one of the memories they will be most proud of! A positive outlook and willingness to try are really the most important elements. Due to the remote nature of the program, removal from the course due to inappropriate behaviour or unsafe decision-making is a costly process involving the assistance of outside agencies. By accepting a spot on this program youth are coming as representatives of their home communities. We invite youth to give their greatest efforts and do their part to create an atmosphere of learning and respect.

Applications will be ccepted until May 31st, 2013. Please apply early to avoid disappointment!
