DOHA

AS part of Road to Doha project, students of Qatar Educational Complex (QEC) for Girls participated in Interactive Video Conferencing (IVC) with their peers in Brazil and the US and wrote articles on global warming in order to create awareness among the local community recently. The Road to Doha is a project conceived by Qatar Foundation International (QFI)) and Global Nomads Group (GNG) to create awareness among students in relation to climate change and its effects. The Collaborative Science Based Classroom Programme engages students in Qatar, Brazil and the US on the climate change debate by exploring critical environmental issues via projectbased learning. The programme includes standard-based curriculum, hands-on collaboration and virtual exchanges. Nurhan Ahmed Nasr in her article Global Warming

What can we do wrote that without active participation of people, the issue of global warming cannot be tackled. Although government is taking necessary actions to combat this problem, their plans will not succeed without our efforts, she wrote. She further wrote that there are many ways to resolve the issue, such as using energy saving bulbs and purchasing equipment that is energy efcient. It is a practice in some developed countries to specialise a day, in a week, only for bicycles where no fossil fuel consuming transportation is allowed. Global warming is our problem. This planet is our home, if we dont do something to protect it, who will? she asked in her article. Tala Abu Samaan made an effort to explain the issue of climate in detail in her article titled, Climate Change, the worlds biggest threat. She wrote that climate change is a gradual increase of the earths temperature attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by the high concentration of greenhouse gases

She observed that the environmental issue surfaced in the late 19th century, when the fossil fuels were discovered. Soon machines were invented, factories were opened, cars came into existence, electricity was introduced to the modern world, architecture was developed and pollution started spreading everywhere. The discovery of fossil fuels changed everything! Peoples lifestyle changed epically! However, the world was still unfamiliar about the consequences that would impact it negatively, she wrote. Since then, the planet earth has started experiencing more and more natural disasters, like oods, wildres, failing crops, extinction of some species and the melting of

polar ice caps. In India, the island of Lohachara submerged making 10,000 of its residents homeless. Islands such as Maldives and Marshall Islands are also at risk of getting submerged in the future. In 2007 alone, heavy rainfall and change in weather sparked catastrophic oods across India which resulted in making 10 million people homeless. And England and Wales experienced the wettest summer in more than two centuries recently, she remarked in her article. She also suggested some steps to check the issue. First, unplug appliances when youre not using them. Second, use a drying rack to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying. Third, take shorter showers to reduce water use. Fourth, plant more trees in your garden. Fifth, walk or bike to work. Sixth, try to limit your usage of plastic. Seventh, always recycle your waste. Eighth, build a compost to turn organic matter into fertilizer, she wrote in her article.
