New attractions promised at 2013 Putnam Co. Fair

By Alex Woodring DHI Correspondent news@delphosherald.com OTTAWA The Putnam County Fair welcomes back the classics as well as new attractions in its 2013 edition. The staples of the fair, such as the Demolition Derby, 4-H and live music, will all return in full force. However, in addition to the classics, there are a variety of new and improved activities and entertainment. We try and change up our entertainment every year and add some new things and improve on last years, said Putnam County Fair President Don Verhoff. We keep the main stays like the demolition derby but we also want to add more variety.
Kachunga Alligator Show Something new to the fair this year will be the Kachunga Alligator Show. The most exciting new thing we have this year is the alligator show. This guy actually wrestles alligators and he will be right here in Putnam County, said Verhoff. I like to say when the alligators jaws open, yours will drop. Hailing from Floridas swamps, the alligator wrestler know as Kachunga, will be facing off against the 300pound reptiles June 25-29. Completely new and original to the fair this year will be golf cart pull offs. It is something new and exciting and just plain different, said Verhoff. The pull offs will be held on Thursday and all local entries are welcome. The fair has made additions to entertainment at the Arches with activities known as Action at the Arches. Included in the beefed up additions will be W.A.R. Wrestling. We are calling it Arch Madness and people of all ages get pumped for that event, said Verhoff. Antique farm equipment will also be a feature of the fair this year. The farm show will now feature a wider range of farm equipment. This stuff will be truly antiques. This is stuff you do not see out in the fields anymore, said Verhoff. In an effort to reach a wider range of people and youth, the fair will be featuring a dance competition know as the Dance Spectacular. This was featured at last years fair, however, the competition is being expanded. It is bigger and better than last year. We will have all the dance clubs in the area put on a show, said Verhoff. This is a great way to get even more youth involved. You may not be into 4-H but perhaps you like dancing. Completely new to the fair this year will also be a class on home brewing. It is no secret Putnam County likes their beer and it isnt a bad thing, said Verhoff. The class will feature lessons on what is involved in the art of home brewing and the different types of beer that go into home brewing. Another new class featured will be Duct Tape Creations. The class will be followed by a competition where the creations will be judged. We really wanted to appeal to peoples creativity, said See ATTRACTIONS, page 7

Verhoff. A staple of the fair are the fireworks and this year a new company has been brought in for improvements. The fireworks event will be called Fire in the Sky: Fun in the Air, After Dark Style. The fair will feature many other activities, old and new that appeal to all ages and backgrounds. The idea of the fair is to reach as many people as possible, said Verhoff. We want to have enough variety in order to reach every corner of Putnam County. That way we can all come together to learn and have fun. The fair will bring back old favorites with their grandstand events. Kicking off the Grandstand Event schedule will be a Veterans Tribute at 6:30 p.m. on June 24. The veterans memorial service will honor those who have served the country and acknowledge those who have built the community. There will be free admission into the fair that day for all veterans and senior citizens aged 62 and over. Immediately following will be the coronation of the Junior Fair King and Queen at 7 p.m. At 7:15 p.m., the annual Marching Band Spectacular will step off on the grandstand track. The event features the countys local marching bands as they put on their best routine. The Marching Band Spectacular is great because it showcases some of the talent we have here in our county, said Verhoff. The action will continue the following night at 6 p.m. with harness racing, which will continue at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The grandstand events will take Thursday off and come back in full force Friday with Figure 8 racing as well as truck and lawnmower derbies at 7 p.m. Completely new and original to the fair this year will be golf cart pull-offs. It is something new and exciting and just plain different, said Verhoff. The pull-offs will be held on Thursday and all local entries are welcome. The grandstand will see racing on a smaller scale Saturday with the lawn mower races at 2 p.m. Later that night at 7 p.m., will be the fan favoriteCar Demo Derby. That is one of our most popular events, said Verhoff. Everybody loves to come out and watch those cars smash and crunch into each other. The grandstand events will be capped off with a free fireworks display at 11 p.m. on Saturday. This year a new company has been brought in for improvements. The fireworks event will be called Fire in the Sky: Fun in the Air, After Dark Style. Verhoff is excited for all the fair events and hopes they appeal to a wide range of people. There is something for everyone here, said Verhoff. Variety at Its Best characterizes the county fair. The activities and entertainment are as diverse as the profile of Fair patrons.
