Demand for electricity continues to rise against limited available capacity.

Presently, demand for electricity is estimated at about 350 MegaWatts (MW) against an installed capacity of 286.95MW.
In view of the situation, the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited is encouraging all electricity users to use electricity sparingly by, among other things, applying the tips below:
The stove is one of the largest consumers of electricity
in the home. Changing cooking practices can save
both money and electricity.
You can cut on your electricity bill and save electricity on your lighting if you:
The geyser consumes an average of 40 percent
of electricity in the home. You can save both
money and electricity if you:

ELECTRICITY SAVING
ON COOKING
ELECTRICITY SAVING ON LIGHTING
ELECTRICITY SAVING ON WATER HEATING
ELECTRICITY SAVING ON FRIDGES
l Match pots and pans base with stove plates to ensure maximum heat transfer
from stove plate.
l Switch of stove plates 5 minutes before end of your cooking time. The stove
plate retains enough heat to fully cook the food.
l Stove switches must always be in good working order.
l Use cooking utensils with fat bottoms to increase surface area of heat
transfer thus reducing cooking time
l Keep oven doors closed until food is cooked. More electricity is used on
maintaining heat loss due to frequent opening of oven doors.
l Do not use grill compartment to make toast or defrost food.
l Do not use the stove to warm up the house.
l Ensure that your thermostat is set at no more than 65 degrees Celcius.
l Install a geyser blanket where practicable to reduce heat loss.
l Insulate at least the frst 1.5 meters of hot water outlet pipes
l Take short showers instead of baths as showers use less hot water from the
geyser.
l Install a geyser time switch on your geyser to switch on and of at
specifc times e.g from 3.00am to 5.00 am.
l Ensure your geyser is switched of during the peak periods of 5.00am to 8.00
am and 5.00 pm to 8.30 pm.
l Do not fll the bath tab with warm water to swim, have just enough water to
bath.
l Use a kettle to boil enough water you want to use.
l Defrost regularly to keep it running efciently
l Do not refridgerate food when it is hot, only cold food
should be refridgerated
l Check the door seal if freezer tends to frost up quickly
l Do not overload as it uses a lot more power
l Do not set freezing temperature lower than necessary
l Doors should not be left open longer than necessary
l Switch of all lights in unoccupied rooms
l Replace all ordinary bulbs (incandescent bulbs) with compact fuorescent lamps commonly called energy saver bulbs.
Energy saver bulbs use 80 per cent less energy, last up to 10 times longer, they produce less heat,
are brighter than ordinary bulbs
l Use motion sensors in areas where you only need light when people are in the area.
l Install time switch for your security lights when not at home for extended periods
