THERMODYNAMICS A cyclic process ABC shown in the V T diagram is performed with a constant mass of an ideal gas. Show that same process on a P V diagram. (In the figure CA is parallel to the V axis and BC is parallel to the parallel to the T axis). 4P0 2. 1 mole of an ideal monoatomic gas at state A follows a process ADBCA. A cyclic process (cycle) 1 -2 -3 -4- 1 consisting of two isobars 2 -3 and 4 -1, isochors 1 -2 and a certain process 3 -4 represented by a straight line on the P V diagram (see figure) involves n moles of an ideal gas. The gas temperature in states 1,2 and 3 are T1, T2 and T3 respectively and points 2 and 4 lie on the same isotherm. Determine the work A done by the gas during the cycle. P 4. Determine the work A done by an ideal gas during a P0 closed cycle 14321 shown in the figure if p1=105 pa, p0= 3 105 pa, p2= 4 105 pa, V2 V1 = 10L P1 and 4 3 and 2 1 of the cycle are parallel to the V axis. 6. A gas takes part in two thermal processes in which it is heated from the same initial state to the same final temperature. The processes are shown in the P V diagram by straight lines 1-3 and 1 -2 (see figure). Indicate the process in which the amount of heat supplied to the gas is larger. 7. A horizontal cylindrical vessel of length 2L is separated by a thin heat insulating piston into two equal parts each of which contains n moles of an ideal monatomic gas at a temperature T. the vessel by under formed springs of rigidity k each (see figure).When an amount of heat Q is supplied to the gas in the right part the piston is displaced to the left by a distance x = L/2. Determine the amount of heat Q given away at the temperature T to a thermostat with which the gas in the left part is in thermal contact all the time. 8. A thermal insulated vessel is divided into two parts by a heat insulating piston which can move in the vessel without friction. The left part of the vessel contains one mole of an ideal monatomic gas and the right part is empty. The piston is connected to the right wall of the vessel through a spring whose length in free state is equal to the length of the vessel (see figure). Determine the heat capacity C of the system, neglecting the heat capacities of the vessel, piston and spring. 9. An ideal gas at 75cm of mercury pressure is compressed isothermally until its volume is 3/4th of the original volume. It is then allowed to expand adiabatically to a volume 200C greater than the original volume. If the initial temperature of the gas is 17 0 C. temperature and pressure (=1.5). 10. Figure shows a gas chamber having adiabatic walls including the partition A contain two moles of a diatomic gas and B contains one mole of a monatomic gas. The volume and A B temperature of chamber A are V0, T0 and volume of chamber B is 2V0. The partition moves without friction. A coil is burnt in chamber A pushing the partition towards right so that pressure becomes 32 times larger compared to its initial compared to its initial value. Calculate (a) Initial and final temperature of the two chambers. (b)The work done on the right chamber (c) The heat absorbed by the left chamber. C 11. In a cylinder C filled up with an ideal gas and closed from both ends, there is a piston of mass m and cross sectional area S (see figure). In the equilibrium position, (s) (m) the piston divides the cylinder into two equal parts, each with volume V0 and pressure P0. The piston is slightly displaced from the equilibrium position and released. Assuming the process in the gas to be adiabatic and the movement of the piston is frictionless find the period of small oscillations of the piston. Gravitational field is absent. 12.Three moles of an ideal gas initially at T = 273K is isothermally so that its volume increases five fold. It is then heated at constant volume till it attains the original pressure. If the total heat transferred is 80kJ, find of gas. 13.One mole of a monatomic ideal gas is caused to go through the Pb b cycle shown in figure. 14. One mole of a monatomic ideal gas initially at a volume of 10L and a temperature of 300K is heated at constant volume to a temperature of 600K allowed to expand isothermally to its initial pressure and finally compressed isobarically (that is, at constant pressure) to its original volume, pressure and temperature. (a) Compute the heat input to the system during one cycle (b) What is the network done by the gas during one cycle? (c) What is the efficiency of this cycle? 15.Calculate the efficiency of a cycle consisting of isothermal, isobaric and isochoric lines, if in the isothermal process, the volume of the ideal gas with the adiabatic exponent(i) increases n-fold (ii) decreases n fold. 16.Find the efficiency of the cycle if the ideal gas with the adiabatic exponent does through a direct (clockwise) cycle consisting of adiabatic, isobaric and isochoric lines, given that in the adiabatic process, the volume of the gas (i) increases n-fold (ii) decreases n-fold. 17. An ideal gas goes through a cycle consisting of (a) Isochoric, adiabatic and isothermal lines (b) Isobaric adiabatic and isothermal lines, with the isothermal process proceeding at the maximum temperature of the whole cycle. Find the efficiency of each cycle if the absolute temperature varies n-fold within the cycle.
