The American Federation of Teachers is a union of professionals that champions fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities. We are committed to advancing these principles through community engagement, organizing, collective bargaining and political activism, and especially through the work our members do.
Randi Weingarten president Lorretta Johnson secretary-treasurer Francine Lawrence executive vice president

There are lots of lessons we will, in time, draw from the Boston Marathon tragedy, but one is already clear: Dont denigrate government workers. Along with some heroic civilians, it was government workers who ran toward the blast zone. And they were unionized government workers. Paul Begala, Newsweek, 4/22/13

Welcome to #nn13!
As we kick off another Netroots Nation (our eighth!), we have some things to celebrate: the Senate got a significant upgrade with the election of progressive fighters like Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Baldwin; some of the worst Tea Party conservatives were removed from office thanks to efforts like CREDO SuperPac; and the Presidential win helped ensure that progressives down-ticket got the votes they needed to win. Thats not to say there arent frustrations with DC right now; Washington is definitely still broken. The influence of corporate lobbyists continues to hinder the passage of common-sense legislation like gun safety laws. And conservative members of Congress keep pushing reckless policies that undermine our economic growth and treat women as second class citizens. Sometimes its hard not to be discouraged. And then Im reminded that some of the most exciting victories arent happening in the Beltway. In the wake of Newtown, at least five states have tightened gun safety laws, including Connecticut, Colorado and New York. In California, the passage of progressive tax measure Proposition 30 was a tremendous victory for a state that had faced legislative gridlock on tax issues and funding. And for the first time ever, voters said yes to marriage-equality measures in Maine, Maryland and Washington state. Were also witness to some inspiring personal stories right now, from low-wage workers striking for a bigger paycheck to DREAMers pushing for a path to citizenship. These moments should serve as a reminder that across this country, people like you and I are making change happen in their communities despite what happens in Washington. And in doing so, we are collectively building a more powerful progressive movement. And so while we may not know how the upcoming immigration battle will play out in DC, well continue fighting alongside those students who want to legally call this country home. Despite how much money the NRA pumps into the pockets of our lawmakers, well keep pushing for policies that make our communities safer. No matter how many tax breaks conservatives give the one percent, well stand up for those who are fighting for better working conditions every day. Were at a tipping point on many issues, from gun safety and immigration to marriage equality and reproductive rights, but we have some work to do. We must continue to build power outside the Beltway and develop infrastructure at the state level. We have to keep up the drumbeat so the voices of a few lobbyists dont drown out everyone else. And we have to take every ounce of leverage given to us by our progressive leaders and make them fight even harder. This weekend, as youre out attending one of our 80 panels or 40 training sessions, chatting in the hallway with friends or having an intense brainstorming session over drinks, keep some of these things in mind. And then ask yourself: What are you going to do to help strengthen our movement this year?

Netroots Nation 2013 Attendees: Welcome to San Jos, the Capital of Silicon Valley. It is a great honor to serve as the host city of NN13, and to have thousands of the most influential, creative leaders in the progressive community converge on our great city. You are in the heart of a vibrant community of entrepreneurs and creative thinkers that helped San Jos become the capital of Silicon Valley. Although Silicon Valley is known for successful global corporations and a technologically savvy workforce, some of the greatest wealth disparities in this nation can be found right here in the shadows of corporate giants. However, there is a strong progressive movement rooted in the tradition initiated in east San Jos by Cesar Chavez at the onset of the farm workers' movement. Additionally, having been recently named the most diverse big city in the nation, with over two-thirds of our residents being a first or second generation immigrant, we are leading the fight for comprehensive immigration reform. Despite a well publicized attack on public employee unions by San Joss Mayor and his allies, as well as the Mayor's objection to marriage equality, there have been many progressive victories. I was proud to lead the city in creating the most far reaching municipal ordinance on predatory payday lenders, preventing them from opening in low income neighborhoods. I was happy to be one of the few elected leaders to strongly support an increase in the city's minimum wage to $10 an hour and have it indexed to CPI. And this year I led our Council to overwhelmingly approve a resolution to sign on to an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in support of marriage equality. San Jos has also led by being the first city to guarantee healthcare to all children, by putting forth the most expansive plastic bag ban of any big city in the nation, and by becoming the first municipality to sign on to the e-steward pledge ensuring we only use e-waste companies that guarantee the end of life materials are responsibly recycled. As we continue to see tax policy exacerbate wealth inequality, the housing market squeeze out hard working families, and an education system that is failing most Latino and African-American students, there is clearly more work to do. In many ways, San Jos,--a beautifully diverse community rife with challenges--serves as a microcosm of so many other communities throughout this nation. The fact that some of the wealthiest and most renowned corporations in the world are headquartered here creates an unfortunately stark contrast. This is why I am so excited to welcome some of the best minds of the progressive movement to my hometown to exchange ideas, to feed off each others energy, and to develop action plans to solve some of our most vexing problems. I am equally glad you are here in downtown San Jos so you can enjoy what this great city has to offer. So while you are here, enjoy our beautiful weather and our ever growing number of eateries, bars and museums. We're lucky to have you, and I look forward to meeting so many of you during your stay. Congratulations on another great Netroots Nation and have a wonderful time!
Sincerely,

Councilmember, District 2 City of San Jos

As a progressive, you didnt donate campaign cash to right-wing radicals like Reps. Michele Bachmann and Steve King, or Sen. Ted Cruz. So what are you doing with a phone company like AT&T or Verizon Wireless, which stuffed the campaign coffers of those politicians? AT&T and Verizon have given $1,017,500 and $179,600 respectively to members of the House and Senate Tea Party Caucuses since 2009. At CREDO, we dont fund right-wing politicianswe fight them.

Accessibility
If you have a special need, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you. Volunteers are available at the registration desk to assist with mobility issues or other needs. Assistive listening devices are available in the general session room and some panel rooms. Inquire at the registration desk about which rooms are covered and how to pickup a headset. Captioning service will be provided on a separate screen in the general session room. Captioning service is available for sessions in Room 210 AE, but users must bring their own laptop/tablet (we will provide a website link for viewing). A limited number of scooters are available for rent at the registration desk on a first-come, first-served daily basis. If youd like to secure your own scooter for the entire weekend, call Scootaround Mobility Solutions at 888-441-7575 to arrange delivery. Weve also reserved tables in the main hall with easy access for those with mobility issues. Please join the many hardworking allies who are working to respond appropriately to transphobic situations. Respectful allies who learn from and with transgender people and then educate others are important for successful transgender liberation. Thank you for your help in making Netroots Nation as inclusive as possible.

Transgender Etiquette
There are many transgender people at Netroots Nation. To be inclusive, please keep in mind the following: Please do not assume anyones gender, even people you may have met in the past. A persons external appearance may not match their internal gender identity. Pay attention to a persons purposeful gender expression. Its polite to ask: What pronoun do you prefer? or How do you identify? before using pronouns or gendered words. Or better yet, ask for their name. One way of acknowledging transgender peoples needs is to designate restrooms as gender neutral. In bathrooms, many transgender people face harassment , so please let everyone pee in peace. We have designated some bathrooms in the Convention Center as gender neutral. Anyone is welcome to use them, and they are heavily signed. These restrooms are located near the Market Terrace. Please listen to transgender peoples needs and stories when they are volunteered; yet please respect peoples privacy and boundaries and do not ask unnecessary questions.

OVERVIEW SCHEDULE

Extending your stay?

Caltrain (caltrain.com) runs between San Jose and San Francisco and stops in Santa Clara, Palo Alto and other cities along the way. Concierge Jared Conley offers a few tips for spending a day in San Francisco:

Local tips
Got a little extra time on your hands after the convention activities wind down? Here are a few ways to spend a couple hours before you head out of town:

Outdoor bliss Located in the heart of downtown, San Pedro Square includes nearly 50 unique vendors selling everything from farm fresh fruits and meats to perfect raviolis and hand-crafted chocolates. This public market surrounds the historic Peralta Adobe, San Joses oldest building, and offers outdoor seating and a beautiful setting for morning coffee, a fabulous lunch or live music with dinner or a cocktail. (87 N San Pedro St) Beam me up! The Tech Museum is the only museum that offers visitors of all ages the unique comprehensive Silicon Valley experience with hands-on, interactive experiences in genetics, earth sciences, alternative energy, virtual design, microchips and more. Fun and learning are combined in this beautiful contemporary museum built by renowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta. The Tech Museum is singularly focused on technologyhow it works and the way that it is changing every aspect of the way we work, live, play and learn. Seriously nerdy stuff. (201 South Market St) Modern renaissance Recently celebrating its 40th anniversary, the San Jose Museum of Art has been a showcase for contemporary West Coast collections. SJMA presents art ranging from modern masterpieces to recent works by young, emerging artists. The Museums permanent collection1,400 varied artworks from the 20th and 21st centurieshas a special focus on West Coast art, seen in an international and national context. (110 South Market St) Bottle envy You dont have to go all the way to Napa to sample some California vintages. Sherman Cellars is downtown San Joses only winery tasting room. This Santa Clara Valley winery produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and more from their estate vineyard, partner vineyards in South Santa Clara Valley and from the Arroyo Seco AVA. (40 Post St) Travel tip The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) buses and light rail make traveling in San Jose and surrounding cities easy. For routes, schedules and fares, visit vta.org.

Grub and pub Enjoy some of the finest food trucks San Francisco has to offer at SOMAs StrEAT Food Park (428 11th St) or Off The Grid (multiple locations in San Francisco). Sample tasty treats across the city at hotspots like E&O Asian Kitchen (Fusion) in the FiDi (314 Sutter St); Outerlands (Californian) in the Sunset (4001 Judah St); or Contigo (Spanish Tapas) in Noe Valley (1320 Castro St). For fancy bevvies, enjoy a speakeasy-style atmosphere at Bourbon & Branch ( reservations required, 501 Jones St), a tiki-style punch bowl at Tradr Sam (6150 Geary Blvd) or a fancy cocktail with fellow hipsters at Trick Dog (3010 20th St). Nerd out! Check out some of the coolest and greenest science buildings in the world at the California Academy of Sciences (55 Music Concourse Drive, Golden Gate Park, SF) or the brand, spanking new Exploratorium (Piers 15-17, SF). The Built for Speed exhibit at the Cal Academy is a must-see for the technology set, and the Exploratorium is a fantastic hands-on science exhibit. Tourist for a day If youve never been to San Francisco and want to do the tourist thing, rent a bike for a day and cross the Golden Gate Bridge (Bay City Bike, multiple locations, guided tours optional); take a GoCar tour of San Francisco (multiple locations); or Segway through designated parts of the city on their guided tour (Electric Tour Company, multiple locations).

Special thanks to Team San Jose and San Francisco Concierge Jared Conley for these tips.

Not Another Newtown: Building a Movement to Prevent Gun Violence

Rampant gun violence has plagued our country for decades but thanks to NRA lobbyists, its been a nearly untouchable issue. Each shooting seems to be more violent and tragic than the last. When a man was able to easily access guns and massacre 26 people, including 20 children, at a Connecticut elementary school last December, it opened the countrys eyes to the need for stronger gun laws. It seemed that our elected leaders finally had the backbone and integrity to take action. Sadly, we were disappointed that even the most common sense and widely supported legislation couldnt pass in the Senate. But an outside movement is still building power, and several state legislatures have begun to take bold action to curb gun-related deaths. In this session, well hear from some of the leaders of this movement about our successes, failures and what the Netroots can do to help stem the tide of gun violence and keep our communities safe. Presenters: Lily Eskelsen, Anna Galland, Mark Glaze, Rep. Robin Kelly, California Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, Randi Weingarten. Moderated by Jehmu Greene.

Screening: Shadows of Liberty Shadows of Liberty reveals the extraordinary truth behind the news media: censorship, cover-ups and corporate control. Filmmaker JeanPhilippe Tremblay takes an intrepid journey through the darker corridors of the American media landscape, where global conglomerates call the shots. For decades, their overwhelming influence has distorted news journalism and compromised its values. Controversial news reports are suppressed, people are censored for speaking out, and lives are shattered as the arena for public expression is turned into a private profit zone. This film poses a crucial question: why have we let a handful of powerful corporations write the news?

A Nation in Trans-ition Join us as leaders in the transgender and allied movement are working to integrate transgender issues into the mainstream civil rights agenda. Youll hear from leaders who are working on progressive issues outside of their own transgender work and from leaders in the movement who run some of the best-known organizations in the community. At this panel, learn about the successful legislative and organizational campaigns and how to include the transgender community in your own work. ALECexposed: Strategies and Tactics for our 2013 Campaign This session will focus on strategies and tactics by groups and individuals working to expose ALEC. It will include new angles to our corporate campaign, new tactics in our outreach to legislators and new research on ALEC stink tanks and on immigration, guns, voting, climate, federal legislation and other issues. Artists for Justice: How Artists are Transforming the Narrative on Immigration and Equality The migrant rights movement is rich with artists and producers who are producing culture that reach audiences beyond the bounds of what community organizing and policy-based organizing can do. Visual artists, designers, coders, rappers, emcees, street artists, musicians, poets and performers are increasingly working together to form a cultural front that speaks out for a fair and just immigration policy. From theater productions to creative online apps to the use of the monarch butterfly symbol, art is a powerful and undeniable tool in the migrant struggle. Come hear how organizers and artists are employing cultural strategy and online tools to activate innovative art that shifts hearts and minds around immigration. Ask a Sista: Black Women Muse on Politics, Policy, Pop Culture and Scholarship This session was a big hit at Netroots 2011 and 2012. Our point of departure is that African-American women make up a two-thirds of the black, Democratic voting bloc and have exercised their votes judiciously in both 2008 and 2012. Their votes are consistent but their programs are routinely underfunded and voices disproportionately unheard. How can progressives expect the party to flourish without understanding this key voting bloc and their major influence in American culture? This panel will shed light on African-American progressive women and their views on politics, policy, pop culture and scholarship, and how the Democratic party can mobilize them for midterm elections and 2016. Beating Back Mansplaining and Other Acts of Sexism in Politics and Organizing Earlier this year, Sen. Ron Johnson infamously mansplained to newly elected Sen. Tammy Baldwin how the federal budget works even though she was in the House of Representatives for 14 years. Mansplaining, excluding women from positions of power, opposing policies like VAWA or fair pay and other insidious acts of sexism occur every day in Congressional offices, newsrooms or (gasp!) even in our own progressive community. Panelists will discuss the realities of sexism, the progressive activist bases reluctance to naming sexism and how to combat mansplaining and other sexist attitudes. Well talk about why we as progressives still have a long way to go in recognizing that many of the barriers women face in politics and organizing are rooted in sexism. Between Intervention and Isolationism: Finding the Future of Progressive Foreign Policy The Iraq war, and the progressive movement that rose up to oppose and end it, was a watershed moment in American history. The Iraq experience and its costs and consequences reshaped the way many Americans view the usefulness of military interventions in promoting U.S. national security. The economic crisis has also made Americans less inclined to support open-ended military deployments abroad. But is a more restrained US foreign policy one that serves progressive principles? Should progressives embrace calls for a more limited U.S. role in the world? This panel will discuss how the debate has changed over the past 10 years and the effort to articulate a view of U.S. national security consistent with progressive ideals.

Beyond Aarons Law: Reining in Prosecutorial Overreach Aaron Swartz death awakened the Netroots community to two things: the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act permits prosecutors to criminalize activist activities, and prosecutorial tactics often deliver injustice. This panel will address the second problem: exposing how pervasive those tactics are, what kind of injustices result, how it rots our democracy and what we might do about it. While this panel will review three troubling cases brought by Carmen Ortiz (Swartz prosecutor) including Swartz, it will also show how similar abuses happen all over the country. They happen disproportionately to people of color and the poor, largely in the name of fighting drugs and terror. The panel will discuss whatbeyond fighting such tactics in the courtroomactivists can do to reverse this trend. Beyond the A/B test: Using Social Science Theory to Get More from Your List Thinking of testing your emails in the coming year? Get smart about the A/B test. Principles from behavioral science and randomized tests in other media are great places to find impactful variations and create robust best practices. By being strategic about what you test, you can avoid re-inventing the wheel on messaging from copy to copy and can begin to unlock additional potential in your list. Panelists from top organizations will share findings from their theoretically informed email tests in 2012. Big Ears Meets Big Data: How to Unleash Member Energy through Analytics Listening to supporters is critical for good organizing. But listening at a scale of thousands or millions of people requires analytics. This panel will explore how analytics can be be used to listen to members and how that listening can be translated into better organizing outcomes. Well talk about simple analytic tools that every organization can use to better understand and activate its members. Well look at innovations from the last election cycle and hear from new distributed organizing platforms like Control Shift and SignOn.org. Finally, well discuss where member engagement through member listening is headed in a big data world. Building a Productive Partnership Between Tech and the Progressive Community Tech entrepreneurs are natural Democrats, but they come to their political positions from a different path than most progressives. While it should be good news that the tech politics startups coming out of the energy of SOPA and PIPA are often run by progressives, miscommunications about core tech community values such as openness and transparency threaten what should be a natural partnership. This panel will present tech issues in light of progressive goals and initiatives. Working together, progressives and technology leaders have a unique opportunity to promote a suite of shared values from government transparency to equal rights. Attendees will have an opportunity to hear from panelists at the forefront of this movement. By Progressives, For Progressives: Businesses as Movement Infrastructure Corporations are not people, but some are a critical part of progressive infrastructure. Social movement ventures such as CREDO Mobile, Kos Media, Salsa Labs and Ethical Electric dont just sell phones, blog ads, campaign tech and clean energy; they have fought for policy reforms and built consumer movements for positive social change. However, there are pitfalls to building a social movement enterprise. This session will introduce the power of social movement enterprises as a tool for organizing and activism, the challenges to staying true to progressive values in business and how to launch one of your own, the right way. This panel is for anyone curious about bringing progressive values to the wider business world, those critical of the trend, and those looking to launch their own enterprise. Carrying on Aaron Swartzs Legacy Aaron Swartz was a leader in so many ways. From revolutionizing the internet by co-authoring RSS 1.0 to leading the charge against SOPA and PIPA, Aaron pushed the bounds of what was possible to make the world a better place. Since his passing in January, weve been working to carry forward his legacy by reforming the CFAA and investigating prosecutorial overreach. Well address where we are and where were going from here.

PANEL DESCRIPTIONS

CEQA: Linking Environmental and Labor Movements In this session, we will discuss why labor, community organizing and environmental movements should not think that their causes are separate but equal, but need to unify in their pursuit of justice if progressivism is to be relevant. The ongoing fight around maintaining and strengthening the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) is a case study in how we can build a more unified progressive movement. Challenging Drones, from Pakistan to Oakland Ongoing revelations about the use of drones as a tool of foreign warfare have raised concerns about the nature of the war on terror, its impact on our foreign relations, government accountability and the pending use of drones domestically. Between Stanfords investigation which demonstrated that Pakistanis believe drones are causing a daily 9/11-like reality in their communities and counties across the U.S. attempting to purchase drones, we are reminded that we know little about the extent of the drone program. Further, the law has not caught up with technology, so activists and lawyers are scurrying to navigate how best to oppose the use of drones. Well discuss the impact of drones and how activism can be used to challenge them. Climate Change: Congressional Leaders, Allies on the Path Ahead The public is ready for meaningful action on climate change, but special interests have a stronghold on too many Congressional leaders. The founders of the bicameral climate change task force will be joined by coalition leaders on climate change to share insights, discuss opportunities for progress and explore ways we can work together to move forward on climate. Community Colleges: The Best Kept Secret in America and Why they Need our Help More than a million Americans earned degrees or certificates from community colleges last year. Nearly half of them were part of the first generation in their family to go to college, and nearly half relied on state or federal aid to pay for tuition. As the cost of college continues to rocket, community colleges offer a less expensive, job-oriented degree to many needy Americans. So why are they shutting their doors to so many students? Money. State and federal funding is drying up, making myth of the American Dream. Learn whats at stake and how you can get involved. Creative Extraction: How Wall Street Banks are Extracting Resources from Main Street This panel will examine how Wall Street turned away from a historical role of making productive investments in the economy to creating sophisticated instruments that extract increasingly from the real economytouching on the housing crisis and the big banks role in controlling state and municipal finances is crippling the economy. Well also discuss remedies to these problems. Disarming the NRA: Debunking Misinformation on Guns and Gun Violence The Newtown massacre shocked the nations conscience and for the first time in more than a decade put the debate over guns front and center. The tragedy also set off a fresh wave of misinformation about mass shootings and gun violenceflowing primarily from the National Rifle Association and its allies. A groundbreaking investigation from Mother Jones cast light on the mass shootings epidemic and debunked the NRAs chief arguments for solving gun violence with more guns. But the NRA continues to work hard to block the facts from being made public. This panel will discuss how the media can do a better job of reporting on gun violence, both to disarm gun-rights activists of their deceptive rhetorical ammo and to ensure the public knows the truth about Americas inordinate gun violence. Dont Rock My Vote: How GOP Legislators are Stealing Elections From voter ID laws to gerrymandering, Republicans have used their power to change the outcome of national elections. This panel will shed light on this story, provide best practices of state policies that enfranchise voters and encourage voter participation and provide messaging for fighting Republican attempts to steal election outcomes. Well look at how states like California have used online voter registration to increase voter participation and provide strategies and tactics to stop schemes like the Republican attempt to introduce Electoral College gerrymandering to steal presidential elections.

Engaging New American Voters and Voters of Color The 2012 general election clearly demonstrated the unleashed potential of new American voters and voters of color to win significant progressive policies and races at state and national levels. The demographics of our country are changing, and we need to be proactive to engage communities often ignored by mainstream campaigns. This last December a coalition of diverse Electoral Data Campaigners joined together to conduct an ongoing case-study to analyze tactics, strategies and tools that are most effective in engaging new American voters and voters of color. This panel will walk through tools used by experts in the field and how you can use them in your own campaigns. Exercising the Power of the Latino Electorate Latinos played a decisive role in the 2012 presidential election and their record turnout in support of President Obama was one of the reasons the President won in a landslide. What workedand what didntin engaging Latinos this past election cycle? And what are the best methods to increase Latino voter participation in non-presidential elections? Firing Isnt Just for Trump: How to Fight Workplace Discrimination No one likes getting fired. But what if you were fired because youre gay? Or because you helped organize a union in your workplace? Or because you have an accent? Or because your boss found you irresistible? What if you werent hired because youre transgender? Or because you dont dress like everyone else? Workplace discrimination is a big problem in the U.S. There are some laws on the books that have no teeth and need better enforcementand for some folks, like LGBT Americans, there arent even laws on the books to begin with. Join this panel to talk about the realities of workplace discrimination, how you can fight it, and how you can take action to help those suffering most at the hands of bully bosses and lackluster laws. Forever in their Debt: Taking Initiative on the Student Loan Crisis The burden of student loan debt is quietly crushing millions of young Americans. The United States has accumulated more than $1 trillion in student debt, with no end in sight. While there have been initiatives enacted by Congress, the enormous debt that many students take on pursuing higher education has become unmanageable for many and has created a looming fiscal crisis that presents a massive problem. This panel will examine ways that we as progressives can address not only the debt that already exists, but to also address the underlying policies and systems that contribute to the massive amount of student debt. Sitting on the panel will include students, elected officials and higher education leaders to examine the issue from policy, educational, economic and personal perspectives. Free your Ass: Defining and Creating a Progressive Sexual Culture Having reelected President Obama and defeated cartoonishly anti-sex candidates in 2012, the left has won some minor ground in the rights reinvigorated culture war on sex and sexual freedom. Going on Offense: Austerity is Dead Progressives have been fighting to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for years. Why are we merely defending the programs when we face a retirement security crisis? Social Security and Medicare are the solution, not the problem. Pushing for their expansion is both good policy and good politics. Join Duncan Black, who has successfully brought the case for expanding Social Security from the progressive blogosphere to the pages of USA Today, and Alex Lawson of Social Security Works as we talk about how to put the austerity crowd on the defensive. Harnessing the Power of Young Communities of Color: The Success Story of San Joses Minimum Wage Increase An unyielding coalition of college students, labor leaders, non-profits and progressive activists came together to win an uphill battle to raise San Joses minimum wage to $10 an houran unheard of $2 jump in one fell swoop. With a focus on young Vietnamese and Latino communities, the coalition captivated volunteers who had not previously been part of the process. This rising electorate is up for grabs unless our movement delivers meaningful public policy change. Well show you how to choose campaigns that knit together coalitions to change power. How Successful Application of Data was Used to Win in 2012 Each cycle, campaigns use data in new and improved ways. In 2012 voter data was king for helping identify and persuade voters, as well as for online persuasion advertising, list building, GOTV and donor solicitations. This panel will tell the story of how advocacy groups, progressive data warehouses, online advertising networks, campaigns, consultants and activists came together and won in 2012 using data. How to Fix That: Modernizing Our Elections Thousands of voters waited for hours to cast their ballots in November, standing in lines long after the polls closed. Even President Obama said we have to fix that in his election-night speech. To ensure our democracy remains free, fair and accessible for all eligible Americans, we need innovative ways to think about voter registration. This panel will bring together diverse voices to discuss recent battles over voting rights, what activists can do to ensure fairness at the polls and how we move forward in 2013. How We Used the Internet to Help Win the Presidential Election In the past, a New York Times front-page story was all it took to get an issue traction. But those days are gone. During the 2012 election, it was often funny memes, great tweets and stunning videos that had the biggest impact on the news cycle. Hear from some of the people, both inside and outside of the Obama campaign, who created the content that helped win the election. Theyll share what they did and how your campaign or cause can best leverage the internet to win. Intolerance Abroad: Overcoming Violence and Repression and Moving Toward Global LGBT Solidarity Recent progress for LGBT Americansin civil rights and in the slow but steady gains in dismantling institutional discrimination in mainline Protestant churcheshas created a backlash not in the U.S. but in countries all over the world. Conservative white evangelicals, sensing defeat at home, have turned the export of religious homophobia into a cottage industry. Thus the increased repression and violence that LGBT people in parts of Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America are facing is a perverse byproduct of our successes in the U.S. We need models of global solidarity that recognize the unique development of LGBT movements in other countries and our responsibility to fight the U.S.-driven neocolonial export of Western intolerance. Islamophobia: A Tool of the Right President Obamas middle name is Hussein and many Americans know this because the right has made Muslims the villain of America. Come to this panel for a conversation about how we can combat Islamophobia and deconstruct the fear mongering machine of the right. Legitimate Tape: Using Republicans Own Words to Shut that Whole Thing Down From legitimate rape to something that God intended to happen to 47 percent, 2012 demonstrated that we can defeat Republicans by

using their own words against them. But the words didnt get famous just because Republicans nominated weak candidates. The 2012 gaffes were rooted in fundamental Republican beliefs. A clip like the 47 percent tape is damaging on its own, but it was devastating for Romney because it fit into the out-of-touch narrative Democrats had driven for the previous 18 months. Tracking ensures that everyone, not just those in the room, can see what a candidate really believes. This panel will familiarize attendees with available tracking and research resources and share how progressives can use them to construct the narratives that defeat Republican candidates. Lessons from the Least Horrible Super PACs of 2012 Leaders of three unconventional super PACs will share their stories of why their work broke through in substantial waysone using satire (Stephen Colberts), one using jujitsu to take on money in politics (Friends of Democracy) and one using grassroots power (CREDO). They will be joined by Mother Jones money in politics reporter to help crystallize how using innovative electoral strategies can help to upend the dominance of big money in politics. Love, Compassion and Other Outrageous Forms of Activism Activists tend to be motivated by a powerful, inclusive sense of connection to all beings and the planet. Yet guilt, frustration, weariness and internal conflict can remove us from the sense of purpose we need to work for the long haul. When activism is disconnected from a deep understanding of interdependence, we may unintentionally create some of the very conditions we are fighting againstpersecution instead of justice, hatred instead of compassion. This panel will explore in-person and online tools for resilience of body, mind and spirit to help support a sustained, transformational activism. Making Wall Street Tremble: Case Studies from Innovative Corporate Campaigns Over the past year, grassroots campaigns have taken on some of the biggest Wall Street corporations in the country and scored real, tangible victories against behemoths like Walmart, Bank of America and Hyatt. Come learn from the strategists and on-the-ground organizers running these campaigns and hear their case studies to learn what they did, how they did it and where theyre headed next. Mega-Millions 2012: Key Experiments and Discoveries in the World of Online Fundraising Progressives in 2012 made incredible advances in the art and science of online fundraising. In this rapid-fire session, panelists will share the tactics and tests that helped them raise hundreds of millions of dollars, much of it from small-dollar donors. Youll walk away with a host of ideas you can try in your own organizations and campaigns. Panelists will also discuss what didnt work and how these failures ended up being as informative as the successes. This behind-the-scenes look into the world of online fundraising will conclude with a discussion of how lessons learned at the national level can be applied to state and local politics. Migrants Moving Mountains: How the Undocumented are Leading the Charge on Immigration Reform In the past few years the undocumented immigrant movement has become a force with which to be reckoned. DREAMers, day laborers, domestic workers and undocumented people have created a multi-faceted movement that has forced the President, Congress and states to address the issues of the undocumented. Come have a conversation with undocumented leaders from across the nation in a discussion of whats next for immigrants. Mis-Education of Bloggers: What You Dont Know About Education Reform and Communities of Color From school closings, public to private, school vouchers to school choice, everyone seems to have an opinion on how education reform affects communities of color. Who has the right idea? Are the right people at the table? Who is moving the message? This panel will address key education issues affecting communities of color and the ways to contribute to the conversation around fixing our education system.

Moving the Needle: How We Won Gay Marriage in 2012 After a string of more than 30 losses at the ballot, gay activists won four marriage-related ballot campaigns in 2012. These historic wins legalized the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Maine, Maryland and Washington while defeating an anti-gay amendment in Minnesota. The victories are the result of a critical shift in messaging and strategy including a more sophisticated use of digital and social media. This session will provide an inside look at how social media and digital organizing, along with a strong field game, helped transform marriage into a winning issue. Native Vote: Why Winning Indian Country Matters to You This panel of Native Vote organizers and strategists will engage participants on why winning Indian country is vital to all people, not just one demographic. How do the political and public policy interests of Native Vote intersect with larger voting blocs? How can progressives ensure that Native issues and the Native community are addressed and well-represented?

Pop, Politics and Activism: Redefining the Asian American and Pacific Islander Community Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) are in the national spotlight more than ever: as the fastest growing racial group, the fastest growing segment of the electorate, and for casting overwhelmingly lefty votes this past election (according to exit polls, 77% voted for Obama). Politicians and pundits were shocked, but should they have been? Well question assumptions about AAPI political beliefs, reclaim an AAPI identity beyond model minority or wedge and explore concerns held in common with other minority communities. Reaching Voters Where they Are: The Secret to California Labors Winning Microtargeting Strategy In 2012 California unions defeated Prop 32, an anti-union measure funded by the Koch Brothers and other corporate interests, by combining sophisticated microtargeting and online advertising with a traditional field and media campaign. This led to a 13-point victory and produced down-ticket effects, including passing Prop 30. This session will discuss how labor used ground-breaking microtargeting online and in the field to connect with new and hard-to-reach younger voters who watch little TV or traditionally engage on political issues. Well discuss key elements of the campaign and lay out strategies to employ these tactics in other campaigns. Reclaiming Family Values from the Right For too long, a conservative agenda of traditional family structuresand not the fiscal policies that keep families togetherhave defined our political discourse around family values. Hear from progressive leaders on the economic security policies that strengthen our families, and leave armed with the tools and messaging to take back family values from the right. Rights in the Balance: The Supreme Court and Social Justice The current term of the U.S. Supreme Court includes some of the most important cases in decades. By the end of the termquite possibly just as Netroots Nation is getting underwaythe Court will issue decisions that will have a huge impact on who can get married, vote and go to college. This panel will discuss these seminal cases affecting marriage equality, voting rights and affirmative action; propose action steps to build on favorable decisions and counter the impact of adverse decisions; and reinforce the urgent need to press the Obama administration for a progressive judiciary. Safeguarding Democracy: Perspectives on Global Security, Technology and Human Rights User-generated images, videos and stories stream in every day from Syria. Activists have access to satellite technology to deter mass atrocities in Sudan and geo-targeted apps to aid famine relief in the Sahel. Technology has transformed the way governments and movements are held accountable and is reshaping how the world witnesses history. With these advancements come increased scrutiny, privacy concerns and a battle for access. This panel will provide analysis and insight into the influence of technology in safeguarding human rights. Well discuss the power dynamics between movements and governments using technology as an accountability tool and discuss the need for progressive policies that support innovation in human rights. Science Under the Rug: How Government and Industry Hide Research and How to Fight Back Attempts to suppress and obscure science are increasingly common features of many public policy battles, especially around tobacco, evolution, climate change, guns and abortion. Eighty-five years after the Scopes Monkey Trial, Tennessee passed another law attacking evolution educationand lumped in climate change and stem cell research to boot. Other legislators have forced doctors to tell patients falsehoods about their pregnancies and abortion. At the NRAs behest, federal funds for gun violence research were eliminated. Well talk about how science is being hidden and attacked, and how we fight back. Silicon Valley Supply Chain: Is Tech Treating its Workforce Unfairly? Over the past 30 years, Silicon Valley has been an engine for growth and innovation in the U.S. and world economy. But many workers in the supply chain have not shared in that prosperity. This session describes how workers across the supply chainfrom sweatshops in China to security desks in Mountain Viewhave been mistreated in order to maximize wealth and profits for some at the top, as well as what you can do about it.

Never Too Early: Q&A on the 2014 Elections and Lessons from 2012 The 2014 mid-terms might seem like a long way off, but as noted political strategist Yogi Berra famously said, It gets late early around here! And so, because its never too soon to look ahead, the editors of Daily Kos Elections invite you to join them for an in-depth Q&A about the 2014 elections, as well as a look back at 2012. What lessons can we learn from last year? Which themes and issueslike the War on Women, marriage equality and gerrymanderingwill once again play an important role? Will Democrats hold the Senate? And do they have a chance to retake the House? Well take questions on these topics and any individual race you ask about. If you want to know more about whats going to happen next November, stop in! Not Your Mothers Abortion Fight: Millennials, Youth of Color and the Fight for Reproductive Justice Many youth of color and young feminists today see the fight for abortion rights as part of a broader fight for justice in multiple arenas. Well talk about reproductive justice as a framework for creating a more inclusive conversation about what it takes for every person to make decisions about sex, health, reproduction and parenting and how these issues intersect in the fight for economic justice and human rights. Obamacare in Action: Implementing the Affordable Care Act The U.S. is less than four months away from the opening of the Health Insurance Marketplace. On October 1, many of the millions of uninsured Americans can enroll in affordable health insurance coverage. With major provisions of the Affordable Care Act taking effect on January 1, 2014, this session will cover steps being taken to educate and engage Americans in this generational change in health care. In the Fall of 2012 after the Supreme Court decisions that validated the ACA, 78 percent of Americans eligible for financial subsidies or Medicaid were not aware of these benefits. This session will present lessons learned during the implementation and explore how the Netroots can support organizing efforts in states like Florida and Texas where political leaders seek to derail the ACA. Organizing Beyond Elections: Judicial Vacancies are the Keys to a Generation of Change Judicial vacancies are rarely talked about in our states. The truth is, while we focus on election cycles that can affect change for two, four or six years, appointing a judge impacts us for a lifetime. Hear about the opportunities progressives have to create lasting change and diversity in the judicial branch. Organizing Support for Abortion Rights in Hostile Territory When legislation is introduced in Virginia that imposes on reproductive rights, women across the country leap to attention. But when this kind of legislation is passed in Mississippi, progressives barely bat an eye. Arkansas has outlawed abortion at 12 weeks, and North Dakota at six. As access to abortion becomes increasingly restricted across the county, the fight over reproductive rights in these states becomes even more important. This panel will include experts who are working in these states and fighting the uphill battle to protect access to abortion.

Smoke Signals: The Next Steps in Marijuana Reform In 2012 voters in Washington and Colorado chose to legalize marijuana. In addition to exploring the failures and frustrations of the past, including Californias 2010 Proposition 19, panelists will share insights into these victories and lay out a national path toward the electoral effort of widespread legalization in 2016. Well discuss the human costs of marijuana prohibition, the opportunity to secure good-paying union jobs in this industry, environmentally sustainable production practices and the ability of drug reform proponents to engage a disengaged youth electorate. So You Want to Be a Pundit? Women Progressives on the Keys to Success Progressive womens voices in world of political commentary and punditry are few. Yes, there are some high-profile exceptions, but research shows that only about 20 percent of political talking heads are women, and women comprise only 17 percent of op-ed writers for major newspapers. This panel will explore the various avenues for progressive women to grow their political presence in the media to promote a progressive agenda. The panelists will offer expert advice and practical tips on developing contacts to secure media appearances. State Battles: Fighting Together to Block the Right-Wing Agenda In state capitals across the nation, we have seen decades of hard-fought workplace rights wiped out, womens reproductive rights restricted, environmental protections wrecked and Americans right to vote under attack. Labor unions, womens rights organizations, environmental watchdogs, voting rights groups and activists across the progressive movement must work together to withstand the corporate-funded, right-wing assault on all of our rights. This panel will discuss the ways that progressive organizations have been working together at the state level to defend against extreme right-wing legislation. The discussion will also touch on shared strategy, targets and tactics for these movements going forward. Stopping the Next Depression: Banks are Still too Big to Fail While it was a step forward, the Dodd/Frank bill is missing some critical pieces. Banks are still too big to failand theyre bigger than ever. Wall Street has oversized political influence. The Wall Street casino is still open for business and gambling with our money. Our economic future is under siege, yet theres no ongoing outcry for more financial reform. This panel will outline the reforms we still need and discuss ways to build the public pressure we need to get them done. Stories from the Front Lines: How a Grassroots Movement is Winning the War on Coal Exports This session is a case study in building a successful grassroots movement. Well discuss how building an inclusive and diverse coalition can generate real strength and how weve collectively identified ways to generate buzz when it seemed as though opportunities were lacking. This has not only helped to move decision makers on this issue, but also has given the movement broader appealand better success. Taking Poverty Into our Own Hands At the root of the success in addressing every social and economic issue is our ability to understand and address poverty and the growing income inequality. Awaiting comprehensive responses from federal, state, and local governments and the private sector, communities must and have begun to take the issue of poverty into their own hands with creative, communitybased strategies. What are these strategies? How are they effective? How can they inform and instruct policymakers and business leaders? The Battle for the Midwest: Where Weve Been, What Weve Learned and How We Bring Labor Back Labor found itself under siege in 2012 with the loss in the Wisconsin recall election and the passage of Right to Work laws in Indiana and Michigan. These laws have implications for both the workers they disempower and the unions they attempt to dismantle. Left unchecked they will stifle the voice of labor, and irrevocably skew the electorates of these key states in the wrong direction. One has to look no further than Governor Snyders justification for signing the law (We have to keep up with Indiana!) to see the threat of a domino effect. Find out how progressives will contain the damage done and recover the losses sustained.

The California Comeback: How Progressives Stopped Californias Decline In early 2011, California was thought to be declining rapidly, ungovernable, with the worst bond rating in country. That all changed when labor and community came together to pass groundbreaking reformsincluding a progressive tax initiative, a Homeowner Bill of Rights and same-day voter registrationand electing a supermajority in the Legislature. Come learn how it happened and how you can apply those lessons in your state. The Future of Organizing What does the future of organizing look like? Is it a million leaders, spread across the U.S., becoming campaigners for the first time? Is it teenagers driving the political debate from their laptops? Perhaps its finding ways for unlikely activists to turn moments of outrage into new and networked communities for social change. Whatever you think the future of organizing looks like, we wager its bigger, bolder and nerdier than ever. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion with the heads of MoveOn.org, New Organizing Institute (NOI) and Citizen Engagement Lab (CEL) that highlights and dissects trends in progressive organizing. The Incredible Role of Art and Culture in Elections This panel will highlight examples of videos, op-eds, posters, art and comedy from the past few election cycles and talk about what works, what doesnt and what we can learn for the future. Examples include musicians routing their own tours to swing states in order to engage voters, videos like will.i.ams Yes We Can, Shepard Faireys HOPE posters, renderings of butterflies swarming the DNC in an effort to raise the issue of immigration and comedians and actors reminding us to Wake the F@*k Up! The New 50-State Strategy: Keeping our Edge in the Ground Game As DNC Chair, Gov. Howard Dean proposed something radical. Rather than focusing all party resources on a media onslaught of the usual battleground states, Democrats would develop infrastructure and invest in winning elections in all 50 states. Though still controversial, the 50-state strategy helped elect a Democratic majority and set the groundwork for big wins in 2008 and 2012. Now Republicans are wising up and have called for their own 50-state strategyjust as the Democratic party starts to slip back into business as usual. What can we do to prevent this strategy from disappearing? The New Netroots: Getting the Web We Want Recent success of the Internet rights activism shows that issues like copyright reform, universal access to open networks and online privacy resonate deeply with people in the U.S. and around the globe. The hacker collective Anonymous has mobilized an unknown army of online activists in defense of Internet freedoms worldwide; pro-democracy dissidents across the Middle East and North Africa have used the Internet as a vital tool for organizing protest and fighting censorship; the death of Aaron Swartz has amplified support for his fight to free knowledge and make it accessible to all, and new coalitions of organizers and technologists are building community networks to connect people in the poorest communities. The community is diverse and widespread but do we really get along? Well hear from representatives from each of these movements in a frank discussion about common values and objectives as the broader Internet freedom community gains momentum. The Price of the Ticket: Uncovering the Real Cost of Mass Incarceration Americas addiction to incarceration has reached a crisis level. More than 2 million people are currently locked up, and we spend more on lock-up than on higher education. One in 15 black men are behind bars. Join us for a panel that exposes the problem of mass incarceration. Well also explore how we can change the terms of the debate to turn the tide. The mainstream media labels whole classes of people as lifelong criminals and creates an atmosphere of fear that the beneficiaries of the prison economy use to quell reform. The Netroots can change that, and well talk about how.

The Rise of Alt-Labor: Organizing Outside Traditional Unions You no longer need a traditional union to organize and bargain for paid sick leave, a raise and other workplace rights. Just look at the Walmart Black Friday strike and restaurant workers speaking out about the need for paid sick leave. Worker centers representing domestic and food service workers and groups like the Dancers Alliance and Working America, are expanding the definition of what it means to be a part of the labor movement. Come hear about these new frontiers in labor organizing. The Three Keys to Reclaiming Our Democracy Barriers to the ballot box, corporate funded elections, gridlock in Washington, DCyikes! Our democracy is in distress: corporate influence is at an all-time high; citizen belief and engagement, at an all-time low. To achieve democratic change, we must push back against corporations and the influence of corporate money in our political system and end the obstruction and abuse of the rules in the U.S. Senate. Civil rights, labor, and environmental organizations with strong memberships and field operations launched the Democracy Initiative earlier this year to engage in these fights. Sen. Tom Udall will share how this successful coalition work drove reform of Senate rules and his Constitutional Amendment to overturn Citizens United. Well explore shared narratives that bring these issues and our memberships together and discuss how new and old organizing strategies can be best used to amplify our collective impact. The Year of the Woman: Moving the Needle Forward for Feminism Weve danced globally combating violence against women, and weve given micro-grants out the wazoo to womens initiatives around the world. So why are we still fighting for gender equality in 2013? What revolutionary tools are working for us? What does Bra Burning 2.0 look like? Join digital activists for a discussion about gender inequity and how to proactively move the needle on womens issues day by day. UndocuQueer: The Intersectionality of the Undocumented and LGBTIQ Struggles Immigration and LGBTIQ issues are controversial topics that have gained prominence in political and social circles throughout the nation and at the ballot boxes. These are not parallel movements, but intersecting ones in the fight for social justice. This is true for those who are undocumented and identify as queer, but also for those who are in one or the other (or neither) because of the interconnectedness of all those fighting for human rights. This panel will focus on the intersection of the two movements and how we can create safe spaces in both communities for those marginalized. Panelists will share their stories and engage others in conversation in an effort to foster collaboration and unity. Voting Rights for a Shifting Demographic Again, the battle for voting rights in America rears its ugly head. As the demographic shifts, voters in states across the country are faced with assaults to their voting rights that unfairly target the poor and communities of color. Legal redress has been the normand now were facing challenges that have reached the highest court. Civil rights groups, law organizations and labor all have a stake in this battleand weve gathered leaders from these organizations to address the state of voting in America. Weak Democrats vs. Strong Progressives: Lessons from the Social Security Fight A Democratic president is proposing cuts to Social Security benefits. Some Democrats in Congress are sitting passively by, but bold progressive organizations and elected leaders are fighting back with strength. This panel will share some important political lessons and organizing lessons that are being learned by progressives during this fight. It will also explore how progressives are pivoting to offenseeven proposing to expand Social Security benefits. Come hear behind-the-scenes stories and discussion about power, progressive organizing, and the Democratic Party.

What Political Consultants Dont Want Donors to Know: How to Win Elections with Data-driven Field Operations While political consultants in Washington rake in hefty paychecks for multi-million dollar ad buys, many elections in 2012 were won not by way of expensive ad buys, but with sophisticated field operations, the most effective of which were largely volunteer-powered. Panelists will discuss how data-driven field campaigns that use research to determine tactics are not only cost-effective, but have a much stronger impact on influencing voters and winning elections. What the Frack?! The Impact of Fracking on our Health and Environment and What We Can Do About It Hydraulic fracturing, otherwise known as fracking, is one of the biggest threats to our environment. Companies and our government are allowing this process to go unregulated and untested. An emergence of activist groups and NGOs have surfaced to help fight and ensure our rights are protected. Join us to hear the real story about fracking. What We Can Do to Expose Red, White and Blue-Washing Corporations such as Apple, Walmart, Maytag and General Electric have pledged to move jobs back to the U.S. or stock more Made in America products on their shelves. Well dissect whats real, whats not, how we can influence companies to do even more and what it all means for good jobs and the American economy. Politicians have made similar commitments. Well also explore which policies could make a real difference in bringing good jobs back to the United States. Women Leading on Gun Violence Prevention Women have a special role to play in moving policy and culture when it comes to the detrimental impact of gun violence in our society. In recent polling it has become clear that women view gun violence differently than men do and are nearly unanimous in wanting a multi-faceted response. Women have enormous potential to change the policies and politics that can reduce gun violence. In the wake of the horrific Sandy Hook shootings, we are in a new moment for action on this issue, which is much broader than just guns but gets to other deep-rooted societal issues we must tackle. By working on this issue, we can also help build cohesion and strength among women leaders and activists. Women on the Run Join us for best practices and cautionary tales from women running for office. Well focus on confronting sexism that abounds in politics and how to shake up the status quo. Words that Work: How the New and Powerful Immigration Messaging Was Developed The panel will demonstrate a new approach to message development and testing developed in the past year, while showing the powerful impact of new values-based narratives on immigrants and immigrationmessages that motivate advocates and the progressive base, persuade the middle, and alienate the opposition. Today, successful bloggers are funding their work through advertising, direct reader appeals and other mechanisms that afford the time and resources to keep great sites going. This panel will explore successes and failures in blog funding, the trajectory of online advertising and the trend of bloggers consolidating under one site. Panelists will also suggest how the movement can help sustain and support blog infrastructure. Your Rights at Risk: Drones, Indefinite Detention and Americas Never-Ending Global War For more than 10 years, the U.S. government under two Presidential administrations has claimed the authority to deny human rights in the name of a never-ending and vaguely defined global war against al-Qaeda and other armed groups and individuals. In this panel well explore two key laws the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force and the 2012 National Defense Authorization Actthat are being used to justify killing people with drones and holding people indefinitely without charge at Guantanamo and discuss the implications for our lives, our country and the world.

Influencing Public Policy in the Digital Age: Legal Rules and Regulations for Social Media Nonprofits are built on a foundation of relationships, and tools like Facebook and Twitter allow nonprofits to expand our relationships and our worlds. But new tools come with a tangled web of rules and regulations, and many non-profits are hesitant about engaging in online advocacy. Can a c(3) lose its tax status over a careless Tweet? What happens when a politician likes your organizations Facebook page? This training will clarify the rules for using social media, blogs and email as part of your advocacy toolkit. Trainers will give concrete examples and invite the audience to discuss hypothetical situations to develop a deeper understanding of the rules that apply to online advocacy. Kill the Press Release: Pitching Media in a New Media World The press release was born in 1906, before the internet, mobile phones or television and just 10 years after the invention of radio. Since its birth, weve revolutionized the way we communicate. With everyone except media, that is. In 2013, most PR professionals rely on an expensive media database to produce their overly broad pitch lists, then blast that list with a onesize-fits-all message. This training will provide an overview on how to set goals, develop a pitch list without an expensive database and craft pitches that stand out in inboxes. Make It Pop: Using Data Visualisation To Understand What Youve Done, are Doing and Should Do We understand the importance of data-driven work in organizing, but how do we properly understand the data to be driven by them? The solution: Make politics more fun, culturally-relevant and impactful for new generations. After a decade of organizing thousands of young people, the leaders of the Bus Federation have assembled a playbook of irreverent engagement, political play and old-fashioned organizing that has led to surprising victories from defeating power companies in Colorado to passing LGBTQ rights in rural Montana. Join us for a workshop on engaging new communities on their own terms, winning hard battles and having a ball doing it.

Play Your Way to a Theory of Change As the 80s hit says: One thing leads to another. Thats the most basic description of a theory of change. If you want to make a difference in this world, you need to plot out how. In order to reach our goals, we need to understand where we are now, what barriers exist between here and there and how to get there. Though strategy and planning might sound complicated and tedious, weve found ways to make it fun and practical. Weve developed a game-based approach for developing a theory of change that has helped organizers, environmental advocates, immigrant rights activists and more plan, execute and win campaigns. If you like to have fun and you like to win for progressive candidates and causes, come play with us. Presence and Authenticity: The Key to Being a Media Star Media appearances are performances. To be a good performer, one needs tools and techniques. This session will teach the tools and techniques used by professional actors to create star presence. It will be an interactive master class as taught by Joel Silberman, New York theatrical director and media trainer to performers and successful progressive candidates. Seeing is Believing: Visual Storytelling Best Practices Youve heard countless times that a picture is worth a thousand words. In the mysterious inner world of the brain, pictures actually do take primacy over words. But how often have you actually taken that knowledge and opted for a picture instead of a paragraph to create powerful messages for your organization? Perhaps its time to shift from thinking how can I say this best? to how can I show this best? Resource Medias Liz Banse will share the latest research about how the brain processes images and how you can apply that knowledge to your work. Shell also share case studies featuring extraordinary visual storytelling and give you 10 tips for making your communications more visual and effective. Shake It Up: Getting Savvy and Successful at Driving Organizational Change Do you feel your organization is falling behind or even failing at its purpose? Do you feel organizational change has become harder to achieve? Many progressives feel this way, yet we rarely get the time to learn about the science and skill of leading change from within. We will share tools and model cases for dissolving the barriers to change in your organization. You may want to lead your organization to adopt new technologies, develop a more rigorous or creative culture, build greater diversity, innovate new methods and services or tap untapped resources. We will workshop our challenges, harnessing intelligence from all types of organizations, focusing particularly on new insights into behavioral psychology and the power of story. Those who submit challenges beforehand will help the trainers cater the training material to those needs. Startup 101: Tips, Tools and Resources for Launching a Progressive Startup There has been a lot of talk about the importance of innovation within the progressive movement. This training goes in-depth with key resources and tools culled from the worlds of social entrepreneurship, technology startups and online organizing to provide concrete support for people starting their own progressive ventures. Stories From the Front Lines of Organizing National Peoples Action has a tradition of bringing together organizers from around the country to share stories about their organizing work on some of the toughest issues, from immigration to voter protection to economic disenfranchisement. It is some seriously inspiring stuff, and fuels organizers for the next battles to come. We want to take this show on the road and bring it to the activists and organizers at Netroots Nation. The session goes like this: The leaders model a storyusually about a victory, but could be a defeat if the lesson is good. Then you break the room into small groups and each person tells a story. Each small group chooses the best story to share in three minutes.

We work in partnership with progressive, faith-based, labor, civil rights, and grassroots groups to enact federal legislation that puts 11 million Americans-in-waiting on the road to full citizenship. The moment to enact this type of reform has arrived: coming out of the 2012 elections, it is clear that Americans support immigration reform, Democrats promised it, and Republicans need it. If passed, this positive policy change will move us forward as a country, helping immigrants, workers, business, communities, and families succeed. The AMERICAN CONSTITUTION SOCIETY FOR LAW AND POLICY (ACS) (acslaw.org), a growing network of progressives, works to ensure that the law is a force to improve the lives of all people. Their constitutional vision supports a far right agenda that caters to the interests of corporations at the expense of advancing civil liberties and equality for all. The Framers understood that the Constitution retains its relevancy by ensuring it reflects the changing needs of society. Join ACS in this vital work. EMERGE CALIFORNIA is the premier political candidate training program for Democratic women in the state. Our mission is to inspire and prepare Democratic women across the state to run for and win public office by providing comprehensive training and access to powerful political networks. We are dedicated to making a long-term investment in these future leaders by developing their political and media skills, expanding their knowledge of local issues, and connecting them with mentors. Emerge California has trained over 200 women, nearly half of whom are women of color. 58% of Emerge California graduates have already run for or been appointed to office. Additionally, 64% of those who have run have won. FAIR VOTE is a nonpartisan, non-profit organization that is a catalyst for reforming our elections to respect every vote and every voice in order to increase voter turnout, meaningful ballot choices and fair representation. As the national organization most focused on fundamental structural reform of American elections, we act as a traditional think tank through careful research, innovative analysis, effective educational resources and timely conferences, but also creatively engage with reformers, thought leaders and the media to turn new ideas into widely accepted policy options. FAVIANNA RODRIGUEZ (favianna.com) is one of todays most prolific political artists. Her prints and posters address some of the hottest issues of our time: war, immigration, globalization and climate change. Her work can be seen in community fights throughout the country. You can get your hands on her highly demanded hand-made posters, fine art pieces, shirts, and political graphics in the vendor area, while supporting a Latina feminist artist of the movement.

The MOVE TO AMEND COALITION is a grassroots campaign to amend the Constitution to state that artificial entities such as corporations do not have inherent rights under the Constitution, and that money is not free speech so campaign spending can be regulated. MTA focuses on movement building and community organizing, emphasizing leadership from communities most impacted by corporate power such as people of color, low-income people, women and youth. MTA is structured to empower grassroots community leaders through affiliate groups that organize locally for the amendment campaign. The coalitions We the People Amendment was introduced in Congress in February 2013. MUSLIM ADVOCATES works on the frontlines of civil rights to guarantee freedom and justice for Americans of all faiths. We are experts with deep experience in the courtroom and have strong relationships in Congress and the White House. As a thoughtful voice in Washington, we ensure the concerns of American Muslims are heard by leaders at the highest levels of government. We focus on countering anti-Muslim hate by challenging bigotry and hate crimes; empower communities by strengthening American Muslim charities; and fight discrimination with high impact lawsuits against those who wrongfully target American Muslims.
NATIONAL CENTER FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION (NCSE) is a not-for-profit membership organization that defends the teaching of evolution and climate science in the public schools. The NATIONAL MEMO is a political newsletter and website that combines the spirit of investigative journalism with new technology and ideas. We cover campaigns, elections, the White House, Congress, and the world with a fresh outlook. Our own journalism as well as our selections of the smartest stories available every day reflects a clear and strong perspective, without the kind of propaganda, ultra-partisanship and overwrought ideology that burden so much of our political discourse. The NATIONAL WRITERS UNION/UAW LOCAL 1981 is the only labor union that represents freelance writers in all genres, formats, and media. For more than 30 years, the union has shown that when writers come together, they can win against long odds. From copyright defense to collecting millions in unpaid wages, the union fights for writers. In 2011, it launched the Pay the Writer campaign to reverse the race-to-the-bottom in online publishing. Too many for-profit publications exploit writers by asking them to write for nothing. This must stop. Together we can win justice for writers.
NETROOTS FOR THE TROOPS (netrootsforthetroops.com) is a joint venture of the IGTNT and MoJo Friday communities of dailykos. com, an online political news and activist hub. Since 2002, speakers for LAW ENFORCEMENT AGAINST PROHIBITION have led the public debate on drug policy. As current and former criminal justice professionals LEAP speakers bring an unassailable credibility to the conversation. LEAP believes existing drug policies have failed to address the problems of crime, drug abuse, addiction and the flow of illegal drugs. This group of international law enforcement professionals and concerned citizens agree that by fighting a war on drugs, governments have increased the societal problems associated with drug abuse.LEAP believes a system of regulation is less harmful, more ethical and a more effective policy than prohibition. At THE METAPHOR PROJECT booth, Executive Director Susan C. Strong will offer pro bono coaching on speaking American about your progressive issue. Booth visitors will also get an intro to our free online resources for American Framing. Ill have information about our new book, Move Our Message: How to Get Americas Ear (2012, 172 pp. $10, trade paperback) too. My booth partner, Jason Koskimaki, of The Democratic Hub, will demo his exciting new startup social network, designed to help you and your friends find just the right arguments for your message.

Corporations have their lobbyists in Washington, D.C.; the people need advocates too. Thats where PUBLIC CITIZEN (citizen.org) comes in. We serve as the peoples voice in the halls of power, championing citizen interests before Congress, the executive branch agencies and the courts. We work for reduced corporate influence over government; clean, safe and sustainable energy; a strong regulatory system; safe drugs and affordable health care; citizen access to the courts; and a trade agenda that can benefit Americans rather than multinational corporations. We take no government or corporate money, which enables us to remain fierce and independent advocates for the people. We are also currently involved in the Boycott Divestment Sanctions movement in support of Palestinian rights.

The OPEN SUPPORTER DATA INTERFACE (OSDI) effort seeks to define an API and data structures for interoperability among products in the cause-based, campaign and non-profit marketplace. The existence of a common API will reduce customer costs related to moving data between different systems, such as manual CSV imports, lower integration costs and enhance the ability of innovators to create products for the marketplace. The API will define interfaces including but not limited to resources representing people, donations, survey questions, tags, voter contact, petitions and events. PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITYS SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY is built on a distinctive philosophy of nurturing leaders to use the tools of analysis and policy design to effect successful implementation and real change. This requires critical insights that only a broad exposure to great ideas, courageous thinkers, and extraordinary leaders can encourage. It is based on the conviction that an elevated and elevating culture, as well as personal moral certainties, are the valid concern of higher education and as important as the tools of analysis. This unique perspective is reflected in the curriculum and unashamedly differentiates it from most other public policy programs.

Founded in January 2009, the PROGRESSIVE CHANGE CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE (PCCC) is a national grassroots organization with a mission of building progressive power. With nearly one million members, we help better, bolder progressive candidates get elected, work with them to govern progressively, and work outside of government to build power. We care more about the 20-year strategic plan for building progressive power than the 2-year election cycle. MSNBCs Ed Schultz calls the PCCC the top progressive group in the country. The Nation magazine awarded PCCC Most Valuable Campaign of 2011 for our Draft Elizabeth Warren campaign.

Rather than chase the incumbents enormous leads and start an old-technology radio or cable business, were getting in front of the next big platform, the Mobile Internet. Today, there are over 100 million smartphones and tablets; by 2013 it will be a billion. The small number of radio broadcast licenses, and the high cost of starting a cable network have ensured the incumbents monopoly. That changes now.

TEAM RURAL was founded in 2009 in rural Georgia to give progressives a foundation on which to build. Sixty-four brave folk signed up to represent their counties after the 2008 election of President Barack Obama. This coalition of activists, Obama Team Leaders, Progressive County Committee members and ordinary citizens took it upon themselves to be their Brothers Keeper. They crossed county lines as a team in 2009 winning a city council seat in a run-off. They continued to persevere in rural un-productive turf; starting blogs, newsletters, and websites holding local Government officials accountable. Building upon small battles and successes, they recently won the Mayors race and 4 city council seats in a 94% white county. Why is that a big deal? They got two African-Americans elected in that race! This year they are running a young civil rights attorney for Judge. Things are changing in the rural south, and Team Rural needs your help.
