CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Method In this research, the writer will use quantitative and qualitative method. Because in getting the data, the writer will use the classroom action research approach. Classroom action research approach include the pre-test and post-test to know the influence of using the picture media in vocabulary teaching learning process. The result of the pre-test and post-test will be compared to know the increasing of students ability of remembering vocabulary with using picture. It also will be conducted to determine whether the teaching learning process of vocabulary by using picture can increase students ability of remembering vocabulary. Besides that, the writer also will give the questionnaire to the students. It is conducted by the writer to know students response of learning English vocabulary by using the picture. The writer also will conduct the observation during the teaching learning process to know the responses of students to learn the English vocabulary. 3.2 Research Setting This research will be conducted at SDN Kesatrian. It is located in Terminal Baru Banten Lama, Sukadiri Kebon, Kasemen, Serang. The location is

quite far from Serang city. The writer chooses it, because the students of SDN Kesatrian still have lack ability of remembering vocabulary. They also have not good motivation to learn English because they still use local language to communicate with their family and environment. Besides that, the English teacher of SDN Kesatrian teach her students with the monotone method and did not use the interesting media of English teaching learning process. 3.3 Research Subject This research will involve second grade of elementary school because the students at this level have started to learn the vocabulary of words form, not just numbers and alphabetical vocabulary. Other reason why the writer chooses this level to observe is the method and the materials that will be discussed in this research appropriate with the syllabus of second grade at elementary school. 3.4 Population and Sample The writer takes a small number of populations as sample to present of all the population. SDN Kesatrian has 80 students of second grade. It is divided into two classes 2A and 2B, each class consist of 40 students. In this research, the writer will take 40 students of class 2B as sample of the research.

3.5 Data Collection 3.5.1 Data Collection Instrument Answering the first research question, the writer will apply a test. The test is used to identify the students achievement. The test consist of two types,

there are pre-test and post-test. The pre-test will be conducted before the writer does the teaching learning process. The writer will give students pretest to find out their skill of vocabulary without teaching and learning activities. Meanwhile, the post-test will be conducted after the writer done the teaching learning process. Post-test will give to the students to find out their ability of vocabulary after teaching learning activities. Then, answering the second research question about students response of learning vocabulary by using picture, the writer will use questionnaire instrument of collecting the data. The writer will give the questionnaires to 10 students of second grade at elementary school. It is intended to know the students response to learn vocabulary by using the picture. Besides the questionnaire, the writer also will do the observation during the teaching learning process to answer second research question. The writer will observe the responses of students to learn new vocabulary. The observation will be conducted in twice.

3.5.2 Data Collection Procedure In conducting this research, the writer will do some procedures to collect the data. Firstly, the writer will develop the research instrument that will be used to collect the data that needed by the writer. Secondly, the writer will select the sample from the population. The sample that select must appropriate with the data which is needed by the writer. Thirdly, the writer

will give the pre-test to students before conducting the teaching learning process. Then, the writer will conduct the teaching learning process in the classroom. The writer will conduct the teaching learning process during two days. The writer will teach the students about the vocabulary with using the picture. The materials that are delivered to the students in the first meeting are the vocabulary about the kinds of sports, and the materials that will be delivered in the second meeting are the parts of body. The writer also shows the picture about the kinds of sports and parts of body themselves. During the teaching learning process itself, the writer will conduct the observation about students response of learning English. It will be conducted to determine whether the usage of picture media in teaching the English especially vocabulary materials can increase students response to learn the subject itself. After conducting the teaching learning process, the writer will give the post-test to the students to know the increasing of students ability of remembering vocabulary. The writer will conduct the post-test after the treatment or the teaching learning process itself. Then, the writer will calculate and analyze the result of the students test, both pre-test and post-test. Besides that, the writer will give the questionnaire to the students to know their response of learning vocabulary trough the picture media. The result of questionnaire will be analyzed by the writer. The last procedure, the writer will conclude the result of test, the result of questionnaire, and the result of observation with appropriate analysis method.

3.6 Data Analysis The result of research will be analyzed by using descriptive analysis and T-test analysis (statistical analysis). It means the writer will firstly calculate the mean of pre-test and post-test. Then, the writer will analyze and describe the result of calculating the test. Besides that, the writer also will describe and analyze the students response of learning vocabulary during the teaching learning process. The writer also will calculate the result of the questionnaire and describe it. The result of pre-test that is conducted before the treatment and the result of post-test that is conducted after the treatment will be compared by the writer. It is conducted in order to determine whether the teaching learning process of vocabulary by using the picture can increase students ability of remembering vocabulary and can increase students response of learning English.
