"LIKE PRIEST, LIKE PEOPLE," or LIKE
PEOPLE; LIKE PRIEST ?
P. G. LINAWEAVER.
Generally we hear from pulpit and
pe,\, "Like priest, like people." But
this is not the order given in the Scrip- ,
tures, Hosea 4 :9 will settle this ques-
tion. The ministry is being blamed
largely for the condition of things in
the church. \V e arc tolcl constantly
that were the ministers what they ought
to be the churches would be different:
But according to our text the people
nuilre the preacher m1d not the preacher
the people.
J er. 5 :31 says, "The prophets proph-
esy falsely, and the priests bear rule
by their 1i1eans ; and my people love to
haYe it so."
The churches make their owi1 pastors.
There isn't a . church in the land but
what could have a holiness preac"!Jcr if
they demanded one. But tJ:le church
demands educated, . cultured, brainy,
eloquent men rather than spiritual men.
One church must keep up with another.
Hence, if a sister church an elo-
quent preacher, a drawing man, other
churches must have the same kind. One
church gets a church building, another
church must have one. The church
makes and p!"eachers en-
clea ':or to meet these demands and lose
out in their souls and become mere hire-
lings.
_A little Met}lQililit Wiscon-
sin said to their elder: "We must have
A minister who in ltis early ministry
was quite a revivalist . and saw souls
saved on his charges said to us the last
tiine we saw him: "We are not going
to hold meetings this year. T"he
members don't want a revival; I '11 not
hold one.'' The ' people )nade the
preacher.
The Christian . Witness of October
29th says : ''A preacher recently . ob-
to holiness said, 'If I should
preach that way, the people would not
endure it.' " The people make the
preacher. .
Many a poor is f,ree to
fess that if he preached his convictions
he wol.Ild soon be out of a job.
. There is no question in my mind but
a . church can have "the_ kind of a
preacher it wants. ':fhe churches de-
mand smooth things and' gct them. And
if the Pentecostal Church of. the Nazar-
ene ever comes to the place where some-
thing else than the. :pure . Gospel of
-Christ is wanted, there will be men who
will yield to their demands and give
them they want. If they want
straight, clean, clear-cut holiness
preaching it can be had. -- "Like
peop,le, like priest.''

HOLY GHOST POWER.
H. C. ELLI0TT.
Jesus said, "Ye shall receive power,
after that the Holy Ghost is come upon
yon.; '-Aets 1 :8. Power to wrestle
ai1d preYail with God liktf Jacob. The
church today needs the power to tru-
vail and bring forth spiritual children.
Power to pray r ed-hot, Holy Ghost con-
vi ction 011 lost souls so that tl;cy will
tr<>mble, tm:n pale, loose their appetite
and_ spend sleepless nights.
Holy Ghost C<>l)viction makes men so
si<.'k of sin ti1at they will give it up,
tnr11 their hack upon the world, the
flesh .-and the devil, and call upon the
great Physician in the skies to have
mer"cy.
The church needs power to pray"such
COJlvietion on sonls. P;1wer not only to
get them to ihe A-ltar, _ but to lead them
through to the kingdom. The baptism
of the Holy Ghost and fire \\;ill make
the church either a terror. or a blessing
to the wor.kers of iniquity. Power not
only to' sti't and the chwil mad,
but power to cast him out.

not, there is a reason for it, for God

Our Young People
A CHILD'S HYMN.
God make my life a little light
Within the world to glow-
A little flame that burneth bright,
Wherever I may go.
God, make. my life a little flower
That giveth joy to all,
Content to bloom in native bower,
Although its place be small.
God, make my vote a little
That comforteth the sad-
That helpeth. others to be strong,
And makes the sinner glad.
God, make my life a little staff
Whereon the weak may rest,
That so when health and I have
May serve my neighbor best.
God, ntake my life a little hymn
Of tenderness and praise-
Of faith that never waxeth dim,
In all His wondrous ways.
