All questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) Enumerate all the parts of a DC machine and indicate their functions.
(b) An 8 pole lap wound generator armature has 960 conductors, a flux of 40mwb and a speed
of 400 r.p.m. Calculate the e.m.f generated on open circuit. If the same armature is wave
wound, at what speed it be driven to generate 400 volts?
2. (a) With neat circuit diagram, Explain swinburne’s test on a DC shunt motor to find the
efficiency of DC machine when it runs as motor and generator? Mention the advantages
and disadvantages of this method?
(b) A 250 V DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5Ω and a field resistance of 250Ω.
When driving a constant torque load at 600 rpm, the motor draws 21A. What will be the
new speed of the motor if an additional 250Ω resistance is inserted in the field circuit?
3. (a) From the fundamentals, derive an EMF equation of a single phase transformer?
(b) The maximum flux density in the core of 250/3000V, 50Hz single phase transformer is 1.2
Webers per square meter. If the EMF per turn is 8 Volts. Determine the primary and
secondary turns and area of the core.
4. (a) Explain the phasor diagram of transformer under load condition.
(b) A 30 KVA, 50Hz single phase transformer has an iron loss of 457W and copper loss of
125 W when delivering half full load. At what percentage of full load will the transformer
have maximum efficiency?
5. (a) Define slip? Derive an expression of rotor frequency in terms of main supply frequency
and slip.
(b) An alternator of 8 pole runs at 750 rpm and supplies power to 6 pole induction motor
which has full load slip of 3%. Find the full load speed of induction motor and frequency
of its rotor emf.
6. (a) Explain the constructional features of alternator.
(b) A 3ph, 50Hz, 20 pole alternator with star connected stator winding has 180 slots on the
stator. Each slot consists of 8 conductors. The flux per pole is 25mwb and is sinusoidally
distributed. The coils are full pitch. Calculate the speed and generated EMF.
7. (a) Explain the principle of operation of a synchronous motor.
(b) The input to an 1100V, 3 phase star connected synchronous motor is 60A. The effective
resistance and synchronous reactance per phase is 1 ohm and 30 ohms respectively. Find
the power supplied to the motor and the induced emf for a power factor of 0.95 leading.
