Donna North HS Opens In the Fall 2013

This will be the first time in the history of DISD that it will open with two high schools, Donna High School (Redskins) and Donna North High School (Chiefs). Donna ISD was founded around 1904 and began to grow and expand through the 1900s into the 2000s. Through time, DISD was forced to build high schools and to move the location as demanded by growth. The high school has moved from the corner of 11th Street and Hestor (Moye) to the other corner in the southeast area of Hestor and Main (LeNoir) to corner of Wood Avenue and FM 493. Then, moved again it to where it is located today. The district attempted to keep it a one high school district, but the population growth continued to demand more space until the inevitable happened. DISD has become a two Eventually, Donna ISD outgrew its high school with the districts populations continued growth. Construction reports indicate that the new high school i s now ready to accept students. Roberto F. Loredo, DISD Superintendent says he is very optimistic about these district new facility. "Donna North High School is a magnificent new facility which I am sure the community in general is very proud to see it become an addition to the services available for our high school students," Loredo said. The new facility, located on North Val Verde Road and Minnesota Rd, is was recently dedicated recently by Cornerstone ceremony recently by the Masons Lodge. Dignitaries, board members, and invited guests attended the ceremony. Bernadette Caceres is the principal at this new high school. What happened in Boston, can it happen here in the Valley? We live near an area that is under war like conditions. City of Donna Police Dept is 464-4481 These conditions, can they spill to this side? Donna is only 9 miles from the border. How safe do you feel? Can some She Loved To Sing crazies come to this community or any other in our jurisdiction and do something crazy like what happened in Boston. Lets keep alert. Alerta, raza! Much ojo! I didn't get to pay my taxes on time. I had to file an extention because I didn't have time to file by deadline. This is the first time in my life that I have had to do this. Es que me meto en muchas cosas, that I don't have time to do everything. For a couple of years now I have been hoping to find a person who loves newspaper as much as I do and would like to work it and make it succeed in the Donna area. I need a sales person who can spend some time visiting our business community and making them aware of the potential opportunities this medium has. Are you interested? Want to work media? Give me a call. Lets talk. Vamos a hablar de esto! It could turn out to be a good business opportunity. Que te parece? _________________________________________________
A community has at least four parts to its society - the school, the city, business and the church. Each is a distinctive part that defines daily life in the community. The school prepares the future leaders, the city provides the services such as police, fire dept, and garbage collection; business includes the doctors, the stores, HEB, Rivas, and the corner Valeros that are beginning to appear everywhere along with taquerias and dollar stores. The church or shall I say, churches, provide the only place where one can actually take a few moments to reflect on all the other things that occupy daily life and to talk to God about whats going on in your life. So whats the point here? No point. Just go to church whenever you can. Donna is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 15,798 at the 2010 census. The city's motto is "The Heart of the Valley." Donna is part of the McAllenEdinburgMission and ReynosaMcAllen metropolitan areas.

Just the facts, Mam TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard. 'Stewardesses' is the longest word typed with only the left hand And 'lollipop' is the longest word typed with your right hand. The sentence: 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' uses every letter of the alphabet. There are two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: 'abstemious' and 'facetious.' (Yes, admit it, you are going to say, a e i o u) Ok, es todo.. Some one is getting bored. I do like to invite readers to write to this paper and express yourself on any topic, subject, or issue (but no personal stuff, please). Donna ISD PD Chief Receives the National Enrique Camarena Award for Exemplary Work In the photo above, (l-r) Superintendent Roberto F. Loredo, Chief Roy Padilla, and Board Members Alfredo Lugo and Efren Ceniceros.
Track State Champion Vince Castillo gets a special surprise by Board Member Alfredo Lugo, a sports enthusiast himself who was also a three time All District and two times All-State football player during his high school years himself. Articles from the THE MONITOR and the TOWNCRIER were conserved in a special frame for Vince and presented by Lugo.

Chief Padilla Receives Law Enforment Award

Each year, the BPO Elks present the Enrique S. Camarena Award to a member of law enforcement who best exemplifies the qualities and principles for which Agent Camarena gave his life. Nominees should be involved in their communities in efforts to make them drug-free. Donna ISD Police Chief Roy Padilla, a former Asst. Police Chief of the Pharr Police Dept, was awarded Enrique S. Camarena Award for his "Exemplary work within the Community of Pharr" during his tenure as police officer for the Pharr Police Dept. Prior to coming to Donna ISD, Chief Padilla served as the Assistant Chief of Police for the City of Pharr for several. It was for his service there that he gets this nomination and award. The award was nominated and presented by Weslaco Elks Drug Awareness Program which took place in front of family, friends and invited guests. I was very surprised by this award and I thank the Elks Lodge for their consideration and this honor, Chief Roy Padilla stated. Elk members, family, and friends were later treated to food and refreshments by the Lodge. Happy Summer 2013 Stay cool. Stay Safe.

Texas students will be better prepared for the demands of today's workforce
Gov. Rick Perry today applauded efforts made this legislative session to set the bar even higher to ensure all Texas students are prepared for both college and career, bolstering our state's world-class, skilled workforce. Texas continues to be a national leader with regard to our school accountability system, curriculum standards, and expectations of rigor in our graduation requirements. The governor signed Senate Bill 441 and House bills 5, 809, 842, 2201 and 3662. "This session, I emphasized the need to expand the opportunities for success available to all Texas students. The legislation I signed today strikes a balance between our need for rigorous academic standards and a student's need for flexibility, and between accountability and an appropriate level of testing in the classroom," Gov. Perry said. "We are improving workforce readiness and expanding and developing career and technical education courses to better guide students from the high school or college classroom into careers with the most job opportunities." Students across Texas have diverse goals and unlimited opportunities, from community college, military service, university or a career. The governor understands the need for flexibility to provide accountable and rigorous options for our students, ensuring they are prepared for whatever goal they choose to pursue. "I thank Gov. Perry for his leadership in emphasizing the importance of education for the future of Texas," Commissioner Williams said. "As a state, we should never apologize for striving to get more of our students into college. However, all students should finish high school in position to make a choice about the best course for their future. Legislation, no matter how well intentioned, does not educate one student. Ultimately, it is up to educators, parents, and students to do the work and make the gains we all hope to see." Through initiatives like the Texas Fast Start Program, which uses competency based learning to allow students to more quickly receive degrees and certificates in high demand fields, and the Texas Workforce Innovation Needs Program, which allows school districts and institutions of higher education to establish innovative career programs that lead to a technical certificate or associate degree, Texas students will be better prepared for the demands of today's workforce. "Ideally, HB 5 will open up an unprecedented era of cooperation between K-12 and higher education," Commissioner Paredes said. "In order for HB 5 to succeed, local school districts, community colleges and universities must work together to develop rigorous and relevant courses to prepare high school students for postsecondary education. And both sectors must cooperate to provide the academic counseling needed so that ninth-graders and their families can make informed decisions about their chosen academic pathways."

1963-2013 Alfredo Lugos 50th Redskins Football Anniversary

By Lupe Saenz, Editor and Publisher We know it's June, but we are always thinking and wishing for football season to get here. So, the other day we were reviewing a old newspaper football article published in the Corpus Christi Caller Times by sports writer Ray Collins in December of 1966 just as the Texas high school season was about to end. What attracted us the most was the headline, "Alfredo The Great. Donna Fullback Impressed Everyone." It's an article about Donna's Alfredo Lugo who set all kinds of records in the football field back in his high school era. This was a Corpus Christi newspaper, mind you, and not a Valley paper. The article includes a picture of Lugo, 1966-67 Donna Redskins running back who set running records for the period, some of which they still stand today. As one reads down the article about the middle of the page, the sub headline reads: "More than 2 1/2 Miles for Sapo.' " That's over 4700 yards gained on the football field. Has any other Redskin football player in the history of the school gotten close to that record or has broken any of those records yet? Nobody has been able to accumulate that amount of yardage on the field for the Redskins ever since. Yes, this is the same Alfredo Lugo who has serves on the Donna School Board and has done it for 15 years already. Is this still another record? We have been wanting to write a story about this great feat but every time we asked Lugo if we could write a story about his football accomplishments he humbly says, "No, Mr. Saenz. It is best that you feature someone else! I don't want people to criticize me for the getting attention on the media." Not that he doesn't deserve it, but because of his humble ways of life, he would rather not be the subject. Oh, well, we are doing this on our own anyway because Alfredo Lugo recently retired from the PSJA School District and is now relaxing at home to begin a new "retired" life in the community. And we sincerely believe that he deserves this recognition well . So, that is that! we hope you don't mind, Mr. Lugo. Here goes! ________________________________________________________________ Ive never had one like him. Hes the finest running back Ive ever been associated with. -Coach Earl Scott ________________________________________________________________ The very first issue we bring up to DISD Athletics Dept about Alfredo Lugo's football achievements is this: He wore jersey number 33 as he set all those football records for the Redskins which have never been broken. For example, in his freshmen year, 1963 (by the way, this is the 50th Anniversary), he "carried the ball 165 times for 1,032 yards, scored 76 points; as a sophomore he carried 247 times for 1,339 yards and 80 points; as a junior he made 206 trips for 1,352 yards and again scored 76 points," and during his last year on the Redskin field, "he gained 987 yards on 127 carries and scored 70 points despite missing three games because of a knee injury." If you are going to calculate this, it comes out to a total of 745 carries, 4,710 yards, and 302 points or an average of 6.3 yards per carry. "Quite a record, I think!" The article also quotes Coach Earl Scott who got to be the teacher and athletic mentor for Lugo during this high school life. Ive never had one like him. Hes the finest running back Ive ever been associated with. Therefore, what can we do to honor this man's great contributions to the history of Redskin football this year on his 50th Anniversary? We'd say, let's do something significant like maybe even have a ceremony this coming football season during one of the games in the middle of the stadium and officially "retire" his No. 33 Jersey as a token of appreciation to this man who today serves the community as member of the DISD School Board, who is a retired employee of the PSJA district, and is lifetime member of the community of Donna? What do you say, DISD Athletic Dept? Lets do it.

Rio Grande Valley Sports Inducts Alfredo Lugo to Sports Hall of Fame
Inducted: 2005 Best Know For: Football Hometown: Donna, TX HS: Donna High School
College: Trinity University,TX; Livingston College (AL) Alfredo Lugo was a bowling ball of a back who crunched for over 4,700 yards from 1963-1966, ranking 10th on the All-Tine state list and first in Valley annals at that time. At Donna he led the Redskins to district titles in 63 and 65 under the great Earl Scott, and narrowly missed becoming the first area back to gain 1,000 yards in all four high school seasons. At 5-6, 195 pounds, Lugo had a low center of gravity, incredible strength, and was described by Scott as the best runner hed ever had. He showed his durability by carrying the ball 745 times in high school, and scored 302 points; both marks are still among the top 5 in Valley history. He made All-State in 1966 and went to Trinity University, later transferring to Livingston (Ala.) College, where he won a small-college national championship in 1971.

Maintenance Dept Raises $4000 to Help Cancer Patient

The DISD Maintenance Dept raised over $4,000 for Jacqueline Alexis Gonzalez, a cancer patient, daughter of a district employee who needed help with medical bills. "We bought items to raffle to raise funds. We distributed over 90 booklets to all maintenance employees who went around the school community on their own time selling these tickets for the special raffles to help raise funds for this family in need," Frank Cuellar, Maintenance Field Supervisor said. Funds have already been distributed directly to the patient who has been going to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for treatments. The maintenance department has already donated close to $1000 during the first draw to help with travel expenses and will distribute the rest as needed. When asked what drove him to lead this fund raising campaign with his workers, Cuellar said, "Personally, my wife and I went through this too. Whatever money came in was appreciated. It helped us greatly. So now I want to pay back and do this to help others in return." The idea to do this fund raiser came from people who knew the We would like to commend Mr. Frank Cuellar, Joe Cantu, and Mr. Joe Bermea for this great effort, Superintendent Roberto F. Loredo said. They brought it up to our attention and I brought the idea to Mr. Cantu and Mr. Bermea and put a plan of action, as a whole maintenenance TEAM effort I didnt think we could raise this much but the maintenance personnel touched their hearts and open up with a donations, Cuellar said. A special presentation took place at the McQueen Complex, main office for the DISD Maintenance Department to finish distributing the rest of the funds to the family. We are very grateful and appreciative of the people from the maintenance department who went out of their way to help us with this, a member of the family stated. Cuellar said that they hope that they can make this a permanent event and continuous continue raising funds for other employees who many develop an emergency need. We are talking to Central Office and hopes that they approve our efforts to continue doing fund raisers for this purpose, Cuellar added.

and farm work, Armando frequently experienced interruptions to his education. So, to keep current with his education while being a migrant, Armando attended summer school in Plymouth High School in Indiana, and enrolled in distant learning courses for migrant education at Donna High School. "Enduring a long migrant life and staying on top of academics has been quite a challenge for Armando," Munoz added. "He has had to overcome many obstacles and he did it very honorably through hard work and dedication. We commend him and his parents, Gloria and Enrique Garza of Donna," Munoz concluded. His hard work and dedication to school has, indeed, paid off. As result, today he is the recipient of several scholarships which should help him reach his goal of becoming a biomedical engineer. Among the several scholarships he has already earned include the $20,000 Dell Scholarship and a laptop; the Piper Scholarship which is a four-year scholarship program awarded to academically promising and superior high school seniors in amounts intended to supplement remaining financial need to attend any college or university in the state of Texas; and the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship which will pay for post-secondary education up to 8 years. He plans to attend one of three college that have already accepted him including the University of Texas in Austin; Texas A & M University or Baylor. He has also applied to Stanford University and Yale University. His plans include studying overseas which he plans to do while attending college. Armando graduated as Donna High School's Salutatorian with a 100.10 grade point average. He volunteers with Generations Texas, an organization that helps other students with college applications.
