14:1 Gearbox assembly instructions

Components 1 4 4 8 4 2 2 1 Instructions 1.Separate all of the components (a-e) from the etch, make sure you file off the tabs completely (this is particularly important for the spacers (e)) 2.Fold up the etches as indicated in the exploded diagram (Figure 1) below, make sure all half etch lines are on the inside of the bend, solder (or glue) where indicated. 3.Take your axle (not supplied) and assemble the components as in Stage 1 of Figure 2 below in the following sequence: Etch B Large bush Wormwheel (secure with Loctite threadlock, or superglue at the centre of the axle) Large bush Etch A etch for (2 gearboxes) small brass bushes large brass bushes 14ba nut and bolt sets 12ba nut and bolt sets wormwheels (gear) worms (screw) 1.5mm driveshaft (cut in half)

4. Push all of the components together, so that the bushes sit in the holes on the etches and the tabs fit in the corresponding notches in Etches A&B 5. Bolt Etch C onto Etches A&B, the side flaps of C are on the outside of A and B. See Stage 2 of Figure 2. 6. Now make up the wormshaft as shown in stage 3 of Figure 2. Secure the worm, with a spot of Loctite, 5mm from the end of the driveshaft where you cut the other machined end is where you will connect the universal jointed driveshaft. 7. Pop a spot of gear grease (I use Tamiya) on the worm and slide the stage 3 assembly into stage 2. 8. Secure Etch D onto the other side of the stage 2 assembly. 9. Finally, replace the other wheel on the axle and check the back to back measurement. Notes 1. The 14ba bolts are very fiddly, so I suggest fixing these over a tray to catch the nuts (which you will drop!). 2. Make sure that the 2 gearboxes are handed left and right, with all insulated sides of axles on the same side on each coach. 3. To reduce side to side movement on the axle, push the large bushes up against the wormgear and then secure these to the gearbox frame with a spot of superglue. 4. Make sure the threadlock or superglue you used to secure the worm and wormwheel are dry before final assembly. 5. The tabs on the gearbox should face the centre of the bogie with the longer end of the driveshaft facing out of the bogie. To complete assembly, see the motorising section of the main instructions for the 502 kit.
