MODIFICATION (WAVES) 1. Diagram 10.3 shows the plan of a football stadium.

When an announcement was made using only one loudspeaker, spectators at positions such as P, Q and R could not hear the announcement clearly.

Suggest and explain improvements to the sound system and transmission of the sound so that spectators all around the stadium can hear the announcement clearly. Your answer should cover the following aspects: (i) The number of loudspeakers (ii) The position of the loudspeakers (iii) The amplification of the sound [6 marks] 2. You have been assigned as a consultant to assemble a speaker system to improve the acoustics of a school hall. Using the appropriate physics concept explain how the installation of the speaker system and other modifications that can improve audible sound. In your explanation, elaborate on the following aspects: (i) Distance between of two stereo speakers (ii) Wall and floor finishing. (iii) Power of the loud speakers (iv) Positioning of speakers and microphones [10 MARKS] 3. Diagram 10.4 shows a restaurant in the town of Seremban. The restaurant is always packed with customers and always noisy. A student and his parents often visit the restaurant to enjoy a pleasant dinner. The restaurant in Diagram 10.4 is not suitable for a quiet evening and they decided to suggest a few modifications to the restaurant owner.

Using the appropriate physics concepts, suggest and explain the modifications that have to be done to reduce the noise pollution. The modifications should include the following aspects: (i) Material used for floor, ceiling and wall (ii) Finishing for table and countertops (iii) Solution for large windows (iv) Dining space design [10 marks] 4. Diagram 10.2 shows a ship with a radar dish.

The purpose of the radar dish is to detect other vessels and obstacles in the surrounding seas as the ship travels in the oceans. The radar system helps in the detection even in foggy weather and at night. The radar must be able to receive to receive information almost immediately from the obstacles or other ships. You are required to design a radar system a radar system for this purpose. In your design, you are to emphasise on the following aspects with explanations: (i) Type of waves used (ii) Shape of the dish (iii) Position of the receiver (iv) Size of the dish (v) Height at which the dish is mounted (vi) Mechanism to detect ships and obstacles in all directions around the ship. [10 marks]

5. In the situation shown in diagram 10.2, it found that the residents of a housing estate cannot receive television signals from the transmitter.

Suggest modifications that need to be done to improve the reception of the signal. You should consider the following aspects in your explanations: (i) The wavelength of the signals (ii) The location of the transmitter (iii) The height of the transmitter (iv) The strength of the signals (v) The distance of travel of the signal [10 marks] 6. Figure shows the seashore of a fishing village.

During the rainy season, waves are big. One year the waves eroded the seashore, caused the jetty to collapse and damaged the fishermans boats. To prevent similar damage in the future, the fisherman suggest building retaining walls and relocating the jetty. Make further suggestions of ways to help the fisherman solve their problem. You should use your knowledge of reflection, refraction and diffraction of waves to explain these suggestions, to include the following aspects: (i) the design and structure of the retaining wall (ii) the location of the new jetty (iii) the size or energy of the waves [ 10 marks] 7. Figure 10.4 shows a portion of an island. During the monsoon season, waves are big and may erode the seashore

Figure 10.4 To attract more tourists to the island, a contractor wants to build a beach resort equipped with safety features for tourists to stay in the resort and swim in the sea.You are asked to give suggestions on the proposed project based on your knowledge of the phenomenon of waves and the following considerations: (i) the location of the resort, (ii) features to reduce erosion of the shore (iii) features to enable children enjoying relatively calm water. [10 marks] (iv) 8. The assembly hall of SRK Taman Hijau is small in size and produces too much echo. The administrator intends to replace the old building with the new one. The new hall should be able to accommodate at least 800 students and is suitable for holding other activities like concerts. Suggest modification that need to be done to the old hall. Using the knowledge on wave characteristic, explain the modification based on the following aspects: - the design of the hall - the furnishings in the hall - the sound and lighting system in the hall [10 marks]

9. You have been assigned as a consultant to assemble a speaker system and to improve the acoustics of a school hall. Using the appropriate physics concepts, explain how the speaker system must be installed and what other modifications can be made that can improve the acoustics in the hall. In your explanation, elaborate on the following points; (i) The arrangement of the speakers (ii) Wall and floor finishing (iii) Power of the loud speakers. [10 marks]
