2)HST TX protection: transmission protection towards the ODU side

3) Radio Protection: Hitless Receiver protection. The three protection schemes operation type indicates if there is automatic restoration criteria or not through Revertive and Non Revertive operation If Revertive then we have automatic restoration and Non Revertive then we have manual restoration

Revertive & Non Revertive well explained in slide 49

139

Alcatel 9400 AWY version 2.0.4 Software Protection schemes:for the 3 schemes , there is a list of commands you should know for modification the state of switching between the main and extension units

1) Lockout : this commands equals to switching off the unit, suppose that you apply lock
out command on the extension unit , then if the main unit became faulty , then the link will be down no protection available due to locking out command of ch0 , Gives abnormal condition indication, lock out command is available for the standby unit 2)Forced :to force the protection on one unit only, suppose that the main unit suffers from HIGH BER then you can force the protection to the extension unit , then if you take the corrective action for the main unit and HIGH BER alarm cleared, the extension unit still the active unit due to the forced command , Gives abnormal condition indication, forced command is available for the active unit, active unit ch1+forced command= spare unit ch1

3)Automatic switch: normal switching operation condition

4)Manual : this command cannot be performed if forced or lock out commands is already active, rarely used command

146

Alcatel 9400 AWY version 2.0.4 Software

Protection schemes (HST TX):In case of forced command: the forced command is available only for the active unit then the main unit will be the spare unit as we can see that in the previous slide, the main unit ch1 was active but when applying forced command it became the spare unit as shown below

147

Alcatel 9400 AWY version 2.0.4 Software

Protection schemes (HST TX):from the previous slide, we can observe that the main unit ch1 became the stand by after applying the forced command on it, the table below shows

the power measurement for ch1 after applying the forced command
No TX power for the local end due to forced command indicating abnormal condition

RX local end still -53 coz ch1 at remote site is the active unit

RX far end became 63 because the extension unit ch0 is the active unit in transmission and there is -10 db difference between ch1 & ch0

Alcatel 9400 AWY version 2.0.4 Software Protection schemes (Radio protection):1)Alarms:The most common alarm observed on the radio protection is Loss of alignment

this alarm takes place in case there is failure any unit (main unit or extension)unit this means that there is no radio protection and there will be receiver delay because the other unit is faulty, to solve this problem

take the corrective action towards the faulty unit so that the link became 1+1 protected link and then activate the hitless switch radio protection by aligning the RX static delay through the automatic operation next slide shows how to clear the Loss of alignment through the RX static delay

Loopback:You can use this menu to do the following:1)IF you have communication alarm between the 2 sites as High BER, demodulator fail, modulator fail , RX fail you can use the RF loop back to decide weather the fault is on your local site or from the remote site such that IF you make RF loop and the alarms cleared and you have normal received level then the problem will be on the other site 2)IF you have transmission alarm as AIS for a tributary carries a bts, and this bts suffers from AIS, you can use tributary loopback to check the route

3)checking equipment (IDU, ODU , CONNECTORS AND IF CABLE)

155

Alcatel 9400 AWY version 2.0.4 Software Loopback: WE have 6 types of loopbacks in both 1+0 configuration and 1+1 HSB configuration:1)RF loopback: is to check the total path including( IDU, IDU CONNECTOR, IF CABLE,ODU CONNECTOR, ODU) 2)ODU loopback: to check the path before ODU including (IDU,IDU CONNECTOR, IF CABLE, ODU CONNECTOR) 3) IDU loopback: to check the IDU equipment NOTE that :in case you activate any loop of the previous 3 loopbacks : the link will be down and you will effect traffic. 4)tributary loopback (E1-TX port x NE): input loop back at the tributary 5) tributary loopback (E1-RX port x NE): loopback towards the remote station at a tributary , but this loopback is not available. 6)tributary loopback (E1- RX port x FE): loopback at the tributary in the remote station. activation of any loopback of the previous loopbacks will indicate an abnormal condition in the NE.

3)Alarms Handling:In this section we are going to describe the alarms and how to clear it, the most common repeated alarms is :-

1)High BER
2)Modulator fail 3) Demodulator fail 4)RX fail

5) TX fail
6)modulator los 7)demodulator los 8)loss of frame

162

3)Alarms Handling:to solve any of this alarms you should follow the following steps:1)Make RF loop to decide if the problem is in your site or in the remote site

if the alarms cleared and you have acceptable RX level at your local station
then go to the other site and do the following, you will make another RF loop and this alarms will not be cleared then the problem will be on your site to solve this problem follow this steps

2) check the connectors and the IF cable carefully ,then

3) Replace ODU after you checked the connectors and the IF cable 4) if the problem still exists then try to change the IDU and alarm will be cleared from the previous steps you can solve the mentioned alarms in the previous slide 5)next slide will show you how to replace ODU?

163

3)Alarms Handling:How to replace ODU? Suppose that we have a 1+1 HSB link and we need to replace the extension ODU

1st step: switch off the extension IDU as shown below,

Extension unit is switched off

164

3)Alarms Handling:2nd step remove the connector of the extension ODU as shown below.

before removing the connector

after the connector removed

Before removing the connector from the extension unit

165

3)Alarms Handling:3rd step plugged out the faulty extension ODU and determine the polarization towards the antenna for the new ODU as shown below and prepare the new ODU .

Faulty ODU is plugged out and we have vertical polarization

Connector is plugged here for the new ODU

166

3)Alarms Handling:step 4: plug in the new ODU very well , and then put the IF connector as shown below. plugging in the New ODU IF connector is plugged in the ODU

step 5: switch on the extension IDU

167

3)Alarms Handling:How to change IDU? 1st step :switch off the IDU as shown below

IDU is switched off

168

3)Alarms Handling:2nd step: plug out all the cables (power, interfaces & IF) from their slots as shown below.

interfaces cables removed Upper slot indicates from 9 to 16 tributaries And the lower slot indicates from 1 to 8 tributaries

If cable removed from IDU

169

3)Alarms Handling:3rd step : plug out the flash card located at the back of the IDU last step: plug in the flash card into the new IDU carefully

Plug in the flash card carefully to the new IDU

last step: switch on the IDU after you plugged in all the cables(power, interfaces & IF)
170

3)Alarms Handling:other alarms:1)cable los: check the 2 IF Connectors and the IF cable carefully, if the problem still exists ,change IDU unit, then ODU if the problem still exists. 2)alarm replaceable unit type mismatch or 1.11.11.12.21 : ODU version is not compatible with the software version installed on the flash card , to solve this problem you can do the following a)change the new ODU with other one compatible with the flash card software version b) activate the 2nd software version it may be compatible with the ODU version and then reconfigure the link again

c)change the flash card with other one and its software version is compatible with the new ODU
3)Internal communication problem: check the connectors, then IDU 4)los of alignment: a problem in the radio protection switching , this alarm appears in 1+1 HSB Configuration only, to solve this problem see slide 150 5)incompatible shifter: apply the right shifter value for the operating frequency see slide 127

171

3)Alarms Handling:some problems may cause HIGH BER alarms and loss of frame:1)alignment problem : the reason of this problem is bad weather conditions or the support carrying the microwave is not well fixed , such that the RX level at both sites is not stable

this will cause High BER alarm

How can you identify that this BER alarm is due to alignment problem? a)check the equipments at the two sites through RF loopback, then you will have acceptable RX levels and alarms cleared this indicates that the equipments is good b)open the power measurement table and monitor the RX levels for local and far ends

with their minimum, maximum and current values

c) the Rigger Must check that the line of sight is clear and there is no obstacles. to solve this problem try to realign the link from the 2 sites using alignment tools to give the best RX level at both sites, thus the BER alarm cleared and link is

172

3)Alarms Handling:some problems may cause HIGH BER alarms and loss of frame:2)Wave guide problem:the wave guide is rarely used in our network , this wave guide is used in nonintegrated antenna, any cut in this wave guide will effect the RX levels at local and far end to be very weak about -77 db which causes high BER to solve this problem Replace the wave guide with other one such that the RX level will be normal again and the BER alarm will be clear 3)Interference problem: This problem occurred when there is two microwave links have the same alignment and same frequency, this will gives an interference problem leading to high BER alarm

173

3)Alarms Handling:some problems may cause HIGH BER alarms and loss of frame:3)Interference problem: How can you identify the interference problem ?

1)switch off the transmission from your site and try to observe the RX level at the remote site , you will have RX level (this RX level is not from your opposite site)
but this is due to interference problem with other link 2) switch off the transmission form the remote site and try to observe the RX level at your local site, you will have RX level (this RX level is not from your opposite site) but this is due to interference problem with other link. from 1 & 2

you will observe that when you switch off transmission from any site, the other site will receive signal , this means that there is interference problem

174

3)Alarms Handling:some problems may cause HIGH BER alarms and loss of frame:How to solve Interference problem? a)avoid installation of links having the same alignment and frequency

b) using default frequencies : this frequencies can overcome the interference problem the table below shows the default frequencies can be used for mobinil bands.
Band BAND 23 GHZ Frequency high 23254000 25781000 38598000 Frequency low 22246000 24773000 37338000

Band 25 GHZ
Band 38 GHZ

175

3)Alarms Handling:some problems may cause HIGH BER alarms and loss of frame:4)Coupler problem:This problem occurs in 1+1 HSB configuration only , , if the coupler became faulty it may effects the RX level at both sites it will make losses about -20 db leading to high BER. how can you identify that this is coupler problem? a)check the equipments by RF loopback at the 2 sites. b)remove the coupler form 1 site and observe the RX level at both local and far ends, if the RX level became normal at both sites then the problem is in the coupler

we can solve this problem by changing the coupler with new one and if you don't have spare available, you can remove the faulty coupler such that the link became 1+0 from your side, and 1+1 from the other side.
