THESIS ABSTRACT Title : STATUS OF TEACHERS MORALE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF REGINA CARMELI AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR PRODUCTIVITY Author : DECHALERT, SR PHIROONPORN -. Degree : MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION Year : 2003 Location : URC

Education which involves the acquisition of Knowledge , attitudes and skills can be highly achieved with effective teacher. An effective teacher serves as the primary catalyst of change in the process. In all Probability , the teacher is the most important element in the teaching-learning process. The effective teacher definitely makes a difference to effect a positive change in the mind, attitude and behavior of students. To sustain teachers' effectiveness is to entail maintaining one's feelings, state of mind , a mental and emotional attitude. This is referred to as the teachers' morale. This study , therefore aimed at determining the states of the teachers' morale at the University of Regina Carmeli to ensure that the faculty's morale is sustained. 8. Statement Of The Problem 8.1 General Problem : The Main concern of this study was to describe the status of the teachers' morale at the University of Regina Carmeli and how this relates with their productivity. 8.2 Specific Problems: 8.2.1 What is the profile of the Teachers at the University of Regina Carmeli in terms of their morale: 8.2.1.1 Teachers Rapport with The Principal/ Dean 8.2.1.2 Satisfaction with Teaching The components of Teachers' morale do not significantly relate to their productivity. 9.3 Instruments Used:The main instrument gather the data of the Teachers' Morale was then Purdue Teachers' Opinionaire. 9.4 Respondents of the Study: The respondents of this study were the 76 teachers at the University of Regina Carmeli , Malolos City, Bulacan , of the school year 2002-2003; 33 teachers in the Basic Education Department and 43 Instructors in the College Department. 10. Statistical Treatment: The data gathered were processed by computer system using SPSS program. The data were analyzed using the following statistical tools:

10.1 The level of the teachers morale in the two departments (BED and College ) was described following the procedures indicated in the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire Scores as follows: 10.1.1 Each teachers' morale indicator (factor ) consists of negative and positive items. Each item of the teachers morale was reported using a four-point scale as follows: a.) When "A" agree is the keyed response, the weights are : Scale Interval Descriptive 4 3.50-4.49 Agree 3 2.50-3.49 Probably Agree 2 100-1.49 Disagree b.) When "D" disagree is the keyed response, the weights are: Scale Interval Descriptive 4 3.50-4.49 Disagree 3 2.50-3.49 Probably Disagree 2 1.50-2.49 Probably 1 1.00-1.49 Agree 10.2 The ten teachers' morale indicators were described using the stanine scores as follows: Stanine Scores Description of the Score

9 Very High 8 High 7 Above Average 6 Little Above Average 5 Average 4 Little Below Average 3 Below Average 2 Low 1 Very Low 10.3 The level of teachers' performance was reported using a five-point Likert Scale interpreted as follows: Scale 5 4 3 2 1 Interval 4.50-5.00 3.50-4.49 2.50-3.49 1.50-2.49 1.00-1.49 Description Excellence Very Satisfactory Satisfactory Fair Poor

10.4 The level of students' academic performance was reported using the university grading system as follows: Numeric 98-100 95-97 92-94 89-91 86-88 83-85 80-82 Descriptive Outstanding Excellent Superior Very Good Good Above Average Average

10.4 The relationship between the teachers' morale and heir productivity was done using the Pearson Coefficient of Correlation Procedure and Regression Analysis. Multiple Regression Analysis was used to account for the variance in an interval dependent based on linear combination of interval. The multiple regression takes the form y = b1x1 +b2 X2 +...........+bn Xn +c. The b's are the regression coefficients, they represent the amount the dependent variable (y) changes when the independent changes unit. The c is the constant, where the regression line intercepts the y-axis , representing the amount the dependent variable y will be when all the independent variables are 0. Associated with multiple regression is R2 (multiple correlation) which is the percent of variance in the dependent variable explained collectively by all of the independent variables. 11. Major Findings : 11.1 Teacher's morale was described in terms of ten (10) dimensions . In terms of community support of education and school facilities and services, the college faculty reported little above average morale. The teachers were found to have average morale in three other dimensions namely: rapport among teachers, teacher salary and teacher salary and teacher status. Moreover, a little below average morale was disclosed in three other dimensions namely: teacher rapport with the principal / dean curriculum issues and community pressures. The teachers were also reported to have below average morale in one indicator, teacher load, and low morale in terms of satisfaction with teaching. On the other hand , BED teachers reported community support of education as above average. School facilities and services was reported as little above average. Three (3) dimensions were reported average morale by the teachers ;rapport among teachers, teacher salary and teacher status . Findings likewise revealed that the teachers have little below average morale in terms of teacher rapport with the principal / dean, and curriculum issues. Two other dimensions were registered as below average morale; satisfaction with teaching and community pressures . Teachers' morale was described as very low in terms of teacher load. On the whole , the morale of URC faculty may be described "little below average" on the ten morale dimensions. 11.2 With the respect to faculty performance rating as a measure of their productivity , the BED teachers were generally described to have "Very Satisfactory" teaching performance , while the college faculty were rated "Satisfactory". Overall academic performance of the BED and college students were described as "Above Average" 11.3 Six morale indicators correlated significantly to college productivity. These were Teacher Rapport with Dean , Satisfaction with Teaching ,Teacher Salary , Teacher Load, Curriculum Issues , and Teacher Status. Four other factors correlated directly but not to a significant extent: Rapport among Teachers, Community Support of Education, School Facilities and Services , and Community Pressures. In terms of Students' Academic performance found to correlate significantly to college faculty's morale were: Satisfaction with Teaching , Rapport among Teachers, Teacher Salary , Teacher Load , Teacher Status and Community Support of Education.

Eight factors significantly correlated to the BED Teachers' teaching performance : Teacher rapport with the Principal , Satisfaction with teaching , Rapport among Teachers , Teacher status an community
