Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd 1 Kings 18:20-21, 30-39; Gal 1:1-12; Luke 7:1-10 June 2, 2013 Ordinary Time In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Sisters and Brothers, I have good news! Our peace, identity, and call as Gods people comes through Christ! We are all beloved children of God regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, nationality, or race, and this comes from, and through, Christ regardless of what the world, our institutions, or even the church might have to say about the matter. This good news comes to us on the first Sunday of Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time is the liturgical season between Pentecost and Advent. Its when school is ending, we go on vacation, and we read the story of and lessonsfrom the early Christian church. This is Ordinary Time, but I cant help but consider that for Good Shepherd,this time is anything but ordinary. There are a lot of important, exciting, and good things happeninghere. So the good news that we are all beloved children of God is a good reminder for us today. This good news comes from Galatians. In the beginning of Pauls letter, he is clear about where hiscall and direction comes from: Christ. Christ is his starting point. With Christ as his foundation, he is empowered to address a new and confusing teaching, within the early Christian church, that was contrary to the Gospel of Christ. The center of this new and confusing teaching was that Gentiles or non-Jews had to become Jewish in order to be true followers of Christ. The logic was that Jesus was Jewish himself, so people must become Jewish before being welcomed by Christ. A quick review of Jesus ministry tells us that this is simply not true. Christ welcomes all people. All people are free to follow Christ, even non-Jews. Just look at the gospel lesson this morning: the Centurion was a Gentile a non-Jew yet Jesus welcomed him.

The good news we hear this morning in Galatians is an important reminder to us this morning in a time that, for us, is anything but ordinary a time that might offer more questions than answers, and that might leave us a little confused. But remember, we are all beloved children of God through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Thus, we are invited into Gods story, and Gods story is unfolding hereextraordinary ways. Through your faithfulness to the movement and guidance of Gods Spirit,this congregation is living out the Gospel in new ways. One of these new ways is the search for your new pastor. This might be confusing, so Id like to offer some clarification. As you may know, your pastor search committee [comite de busquedapor un nuevo pastor] has completed five interviews with pastoral candidates,and might have more interviews soon. These five candidates are strong and they all have unique pastoral gifts to offer this congregation. This is most certainly a good place to be. A week from today, the pastor search committee will meet to make a short list of candidates. Once the short list is confirmed, the search committee will invite these candidates to join us during a worship service, and to preach. This will be an opportunity for you, as individuals, families, and as a church, to offer your thoughts about Good Shepherds next pastor. This process continues into Ordinary Time, but it is extra-ordinary. In this extraordinary time for you, I hope that each of you remembers the good news from Pauls letter to the Galatians: we are all beloved children of God through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, our Christ. I hope you remember that it is in Gods love for us that we find our peace,that we are grounded in who we are as Gods people, and that we receiveour call in how we can freely participate in Gods story, which is unfolding right here in this time and place. Sisters and brothers, as Gods story is told through your lives, remember that you are beloved children of God through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus our Christ, and thanks be to God for that. Hermanas y hermanos, tengo una buena nueva! Nuestra paz, identidad y llamado como el pueblo de Dios viene por medio de Cristo! Todos somos hijos amados de Dios, independientemente de su sexo, edad, orientacin sexual, nacionalidad o raza, y esto viene de ya travs de Cristo... sin importar lo que el mundo, nuestras instituciones, o incluso la iglesia podra tener que decir acerca de esta cuestin. Estas buenas nuevas nos llegan el primer domingo de tiempo ordinario. Tiempo ordinario es el tiempo litrgico entre Pentecosts y Adviento. Es como cuando la escuela est por terminar, nos vamos de vacaciones, y leemos la historia y las enseanzas de la iglesia cristiana primitiva. Este es el Tiempo Ordinario, pero no puedo dejar de considerar que para el Buen Pastor, este tiempo es cualquier cosa menos ordinario. Hay una gran cantidad de importantes, emocionantes, y cosas buenas que estn sucediendo aqu. As que la buena nueva de que todos somos hijos amados de Dios es un buen recordatorio para nosotros hoy. Esta buena noticia viene de Glatas. Al inicio de la carta de Pablo, l tiene claro que su llamado y la direccin provienen de: Cristo. Cristo es su punto de partida. Con Cristo como su creacin, que est facultado para hacer frente a una nueva y confusa enseanza, dentro de la iglesia cristiana primitiva, que era contraria al Evangelio de Cristo. El centro de esta nueva y confusa enseanza era que los gentiles - o no - judos tuvieron que convertirse al judasmo para ser verdaderos discpulos de Cristo. La lgica era que Jess era judo l mismo, as que la gente deba hacerse juda antes de ser recibida por Cristo. Una revisin rpida del ministerio de Jess nos dice que esto no es cierto. Cristo da la bienvenida a todas las personas. Todas las personas tienen la libertad de seguir a Cristo, incluso los no-Judos. Basta con mirar la lectura del Evangelio de esta maana: el Centurin era un Gentil... un no-Judo ... sin embargo, Jess le dio la bienvenida. La buena nueva que escuchamos esta maana en Glatas es un recordatorio importante para nosotros esta maana en un momento en que, para nosotros, es

cualquier otra cosa menos ordinario... un tiempo que podra ofrecer ms preguntas que respuestas, y eso nos puede dejar un poco confundidos. Pero recuerde que todos somos hijos amados de Dios a travs de la vida, muerte y resurreccin de Jess. Por lo tanto, se nos invita a la historia de Dios, y la historia de Dios que se est desarrollando aqu de maneras extraordinarias. A travs de tu fidelidad al movimiento y la gua del Espritu de Dios, esta congregacin est viviendo el Evangelio en nuevas formas. Una de estas nuevas formas es la bsqueda de su nuevo pastor. Esto puede ser confuso, as que me gustara ofrecer algunas aclaraciones. Como ustedes saben, el comit de bsqueda por un nuevo pastor ha completado cinco entrevistas con los candidatos pastorales, y podra tener ms entrevistas pronto. Estos cinco candidatos son fuertes y todos ellos tienen dones pastorales nicos para ofrecer esta congregacin. Este es sin duda un buen lugar para estar. En una semana a partir de hoy, el comit de bsqueda de pastor se reunir para hacer una lista corta de candidatos. Una vez confirmada la lista definitiva, el comit de seleccin invitar a estos candidatos a unirse a nosotros durante un servicio de culto, y predicar. Esta ser una oportunidad para que ustedes, como individuos, familias y como iglesia, ofrecezcan sus pensamientos acerca del prximo ministro del Buen Pastor. Este proceso contina en tiempo Ordinario, pero es Extraordinario. En este momento extraordinario para usted, espero que cada uno de ustedes recuerde la buena nueva de la carta de Pablo a los Glatas: todos somos hijos amados de Dios a travs de la vida, muerte y resurreccin de Jess, nuestro Cristo. Espero que recuerden que es en el amor de Dios por nosotros que encontramos nuestra paz, que se basan en lo que somos como pueblo de Dios, y que recibimos nuestro llamado, en la forma en que podemos participar libremente en la historia de Dios, que se est desarrollando bien aqu en este momento y lugar. Hermanas y hermanos, como la historia de Dios est relatada a travs de sus vidas, recuerden que ustedes son hijos amados de Dios a travs de la vida, muerte y resurreccin de Jess, nuestro Cristo, y gracias a Dios por eso.
