Letters to the Galveston Wizard Periodical
I just read you article “Gil Encourages Read-
ers to Seek Activities.”
I began playing fast pitch at the age of 5 for
the Lassie League in Galveston and since then I have
continued to play the game, except at a more slower
pace, slow-pitch softball. Your article mentions the
fields in Galveston...the only TWO fields left af-
ter one being demolished for the BHS/GC softball
teams. What I want to basically say is you are abso-
lutely right, there is not a decent field to play softball
on.....I know for a fact softball is still being played out
there but why should the people play on fields like
that. This Island has so much being built and they
can’t build a measily softball field where the condi-
tions are better and SAFER!!! It irritates me because
I want to play out here too but with the fields the way
they are I’m not wasting my time. There’s no open
concession, there are NO nice bathrooms and its so
dark out there who’d want to be there late at night??
My dad once told me that if I ever wanted to
fight for something that would benefit others then I
need to speak up...so here I am, speaking up and say-
ing what I feel needs to be done on the Island to keep
people here and put their money into the city instead
of putting thier money into another, such as League
City’s Big League Dreams. I’m a avid softball play-
er at BLD too but like most people here who are
BOI’s, I would like to put my money towards the
city that I grew up in. So with those words said, I
hope the city will consider to build softball fields for
everyone who wants to keep the game going!!!

Here’s the recipe for chicken wings. (I believe in -D. Stanowski
keeping it simple when cooking.)
*Package of chicken wings - patted dry
*1 stick of real butter - unsalted
*1 package of italian salad dressing mix
*1 - 12 oz jar of Louisianna hot sauce
(This recipe is easy to adjust for the amount of peo-
ple you want to feed.)
Preheat oven to 375.
Place chicken wings on baking sheet in single layer
and salt and pepper if desired.
Bake 15 minutes then turn and bake another 10
minutes (till done).
While baking, place butter in sauce pan over me-
dium heat and melt, add package of italian dressing
mix and whisk till mixed, add jar of Louisianna hot
sauce (you don’t need to add all of it if you don’t
want to. I like mine hot!)
Put cooked chicken in large serving bowl and pour
enough sauce mix over them to coat well. Place
the remaining sauce in a separate bowl for use as

Because no one should go hungry

If you’ve ever only had enough food to eat once a day, or
you didn’t know where you’re next meal was coming from, then
you already know what it’s like... it sucks.
We were given 10 tickets to a Gleanings from the Harvest
dinner in response to us contacting them for ways to be of service.
We were able to rally 5 of us for the event...as many of our wizardly
friends were working other jobs or had already made plans for the
evening. But we rallied who we could to see what it was all about!
The Fifth Annual Hunger Awareness Dinner, held at the
Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church CLC, was infor-
mative and fun. Informative in that we learned a lot about the hunger
issues and poverty problems facing our area, and fun in that we were
able to organize a little group together for the night!
Little did the eventgoer know, but their tickets were divided
into three different colors, and we were all instructed to sit in our
ticket color section, representing the divergent economic conditions
of the world’s population.
Instead of us separating into our sections as our tickets re-
quested, we all opted for the yellow ticket color, which had more
than enough for us all. We joked and laughed as we sat down, still
elated from our raffle entries, (5 tickets for 5 bucks, you “bid” on
an item by putting a ticket in a bag in front of the item you want to
win...Lucky us???).
The joke was on us, however, as we were in the group rep-
resenting the low income group. plain beans and rice were headed
our way, while member from other ticket colors got shrimp salads
and were waited on by members of our own yellow group. How
does that make us feel?
Angry! “Why sahould they be eating so much better than
us? We’re just as capable!” (we role-played all too convincingly
with our bland beans and rice inspiring us into character.) “I’m go-
ing to ask for a raise, I’m going to demand change! I’m going to
inspire confidence in my abilities and learn new ones!”
We called off the revolution when they announced that
there was a large buffet awaiting us, donated by generous sponsors...
all is better with a full stomach (burp.) 4 out of 5 of us even won
raffle prizes, how lucky were we! We are due! (silent auction got a
little too philanthropic for our blood, but proceeds went towards the
cause.)
Not knowing where your next meal is coming from elimi-
nates your ability to focus on and pursue the big steps or opportuni-
ties that are available to you. Sometimes an individual just needs to
be shown one hint of kindness, one sign of compassion, to inspire,
uplift and recharge and overcome and work through a less fortunate
situation than yours. The community all wins big when we work
together towards a common good.

IN THE BEGINNING.....
There wasn’t a taxi in sight! That
is how this trip started. My flight
to come back and see y’all was very
early and of course it took forever
to fall asleep that night. I felt like
a 10 yr old on Christmas Eve. Yes,
its true, I have had a love affair with
Galveston for a long time.
So anyway, I knew I had a metro
car scheduled to pick me up, but as
the full moon was shining, I pressed
my nose to the cold window glass.
There was not a car in sight. 4:30
no car, 4:35 no car. I called them at
4:38- Dude, where’s my car? Sorry,
he says in a distinctive accent, we
don’t have your reservation. Great!
Now we have to pack up the kids and
move to Beverly. No, that’s another
story. Ha. At least Sydney didn’t
start screaming until I got out of the
my car and said goodbye.
KURTZ RENTALS……………...
(Sorry baby, you are gonna hate that
title!!! But its really funny!) Kurt
picked me up in the most beautiful
car I’ve ever seen. You looked at it
and got goose bumps. This is the
type of car that could turn a girl on
just sitting in the passenger seat, let
alone driving it for four days! Kurt,
I promise I’ll clean the seats! The
ride was amazing! In two days, I
drove back and forth 2 times, one
was in a horrible rainstorm, in rush
hour traffic and I could have cared
less. It was that good, the ride.
Get your mind out of the gutter! Of
course, that is where mine usually is.

Back at the beach, the three of us
are sitting on our lounge chairs,
watching these two girls floating on
one of those inflatable chaise lounge
thingy‘s. They had a beer in one
hand and were wiping the sweat off
their foreheads with the other. No,
that was me wiping the sweat off,
it was 96 degrees outside. (felt like
105) It looked great until I imagined
a huge prehistoric great white shark,
erupting out of the water with his
mouth opened wide, clamping his
thousands of razor sharp teeth down
on the middle of the raft. Blood
spraying everywhere a la Johnny
Depp in Nightmare on Elm street.
Children scream, mothers clutch
babies to their breasts as they pull
kids out of the water. (Ever see two
sharks attacking like that? No..)
Finally, you see the raft slowly
sinking into the deep blue (I mean
tan) depths……… Where the hell
did that come from? Oh yeah, lack
of sleep! Remember, the title of this
story is Fantasy Island!

I think I stayed on the beach for 4
or 5 hours that day. Of course, it
turned out that Brandi had to work.

My saving grace this weekend was

The Gulf of Finland

…... So Marieke and I were living in
her downtown London Flat, atop the
YHA St. Pancras. The Kings Cross
tube station was the closest tube station
(only 5 minute walk away). From
there I could get any where in London
from this station. I was told that this
is why the terrorists targeted that
station. That was where everyone was
connecting to other lines, so it was the
most crowded. Anyway, it was now
December and it was my last month
in England. Marieke had bought us
tickets to Finland for a short vacation
before we went to Holland to visit her
family for the pre-x-mas Dutch holiday
named “Sinterklaas”.
We packed the night before,
and we left early the next morning. We
were standing out on the street, in the
dark, waiting for our taxi to take us to
the bus station. The taxi arrived and
took us to a bus depot somewhere in
London. We waited for about an hour
while I admired a nearby church. The
bus came, and half way through our
trip to Heathrow, I realized that I had
forgotten my passport. I couldn’t believe
it and I continued to hate myself all the
way to the airport. Marieke was so
patient and forgiving and never downed
me for it. I, on the other hand, was not
so forgiving. We got to the airport and
tried to see if there was anyway around
the passport, and of course there wasn’t.
So we made the trip all the way back
home with our bags. I bought us new
tickets to Finland, and we tried again
the next day. We arrived in Porvoo,
Finland the following morning, and it
wasn’t as cold as I thought it would
be. Being situated next to Russia, I
expected to be tromping though snow.
But it felt more like New Jersey in late
September. From Porvoo, we had to
take a train into Helsinki. We arrived
in downtown Helsinki and took an over
ground tram to where our hostel was.
This hostel was located near the cruise
terminal and close to the city center.
This hostel was also a YHA
hostel and Marieke worked there a
couple years back on an exchange
program. So when we got there,
Marieke immediately started chatting
up people that she used to work with.
It felt good to be in such a far away
place and knowing that my girlfriend
was familiar with the surroundings.
The following days we explored the
different cathedrals, shops, and sights
around the city. The streets were heated
so that the pavement didn’t freeze. This
was a luxury for shoppers and tourists
so that they could still walk down the
street in freezing temperatures. It
progressively became colder and colder
while we were there. The next day
Marieke and I took a boat out to an old
island outpost off the cost of Helsinki
called Suommelina. This was an old
Russian/Swedish fortress. It was so
cool that once you got off the boat, the
entire town seemed to have been frozen
since the 1700’s . Everything seemed
to have been untouched for hundreds
of years. There were also mounds and
caves all over the island that they used
to store munitions and troops. After a
few hours we went back to Helsinki and
settled down with a session in a sauna.
The next day we spent some time with
Mariekes friends, and then we set off
for Estonia. We took a passenger ship
across the Gulf of Finland, to Tallinn.
On our way across the gulf, we
were entertained with some Finish folk
songs and old people dancing to them.
After an hour or so we arrived. It was
night and we had to find our Bed and
Breakfast on foot. We walked out of the
cruise terminal to downtown. We were
staying in Old Tallinn, and apparently
we were walking around in new, run
down, Tallinn. We made our way
through twists and turns and then came
upon a colossal, medieval wall. We
passed through it and found ourselves
in a city practically untouched since
the 1600’s. Without the people and
cars, you would have sworn
you went back in time. We
walked through the center and
found our B&B. It was an old
house right in the middle of
Old Tallinn. The next day we
walked around and checked out
the many, many things to see.
I don’t know if I was caught
up in the visual history that I
was surrounded by or if I was

A Somewhat Epic Journey
After the end of a tumultuous and
near farcical marriage, I came up
with an amphetamine-induced
idea to stick out my thumb and
hitchhike from my dead end, fu-
tureless hometown of Pratt, Kan-
sas to the west coast (namely Los
Angeles, California) with a friend
of mine, who shall remain name-
less.
Besides the break-up I had with
the cop-f*cking, coke wh*re,
there was also the issue of my
probation in Pratt County (which
I completely failed to comply
to) and a quickly expanding in-
volvement with and addiction to
methamphetamines; led me to the
decision to pack a few changes of
clothes, some toiletries and my
broken pride and take off.
I made this decision with my
nameless friend and we began our
journey on July 1st, 2005. Our
first destination was Lawrence,
Kansas, so as to visit a very good
friend of ours for a short time be-
fore the trip to California was to
commence. Little did we realize at
the time that our plans would be
changing very drastically after the
meth wore off and other ideas and
plans started to blossom.
Our old friend persuaded us (with
copious amounts of expensive and
very tasty weed) to stick around a
few weeks.
Eventually my nameless traveling
companion went somewhere else
and I got a job washing dishes at
a very lively, busy, and drunken
brewery/restaurant.
Before I knew it, I had hundreds of
friends and a plethora of incredibly
gorgeous women to fail miserably
trying to sleep with, not to mention
the better part of a year had passed.
I wasn’t even out of Kansas yet
and I really couldn’t see any rea-
son to leave. Soon after quiting the
brewery (it laughingly got in the
way of my partying) my nameless
friend (Let’s just call him Phillip
Onya, get it?) showed back up in
Lawrence, only this time he wants
to move to Corpus Christi, Texas.
“Texas?!#$?!, What the f*ck kind
of drugs are you on?” I asked Phil-
lip, “If you ever listened to me you
would know that outside of Mexico
and Prison, Texas is the last f*cking
place on Earth I want to visit, let
alone live in!”
He retorted by telling me of the
arrest warrant Pratt County had is-
sued for me, and I started singing
“God Bless Texas” in about 2 nano-
seconds.
So after a two month wait (for
my lease to be out), Phillip and
I hopped on a Greyhound for the
Gulf of Mexico and the Lone Star
State.
As it turned out, my lease ran
out about a week before our bus
was leaving. At that moment,

recluse. No puns intended (ok,
it is on purpose), but that was a
REAL pain in my @ss.
I will make it to LA, I will make
things right, and I will make
things happen for myself. Some-
thing good will come of this, I’m
certain. I’ve just got to keep go-
ing on this journery until I get

Where there’s smoke…
One a hot summer day, late June, I
looked to the west and saw smoke.
Huge plumes of it. GWiz made
it to the flames five minutes after
the smoke was sited. Benny, the
Jamaica Beach cop let me in the gate
before he blocked it off or either I
beat him in. The fire was at the State
Park Camp Ground (Bayside) and
it was really flaming. The ground
was on fire. With camera in hand, I
cautiously approached the Jamaica
Beach Firefighter who was making
an attempt to extinguish the earth
with the hose from a first response
truck. Trees were in flames, the grass
was turning black very quickly, and
smoke was billowing up making
a big ole mess of the blue sky. I
asked the very hot firefighter what
happened. And before he answered
me I was able to put it all together. I
saw the starting point of the incident
and realized that some moron didn’t
put out their campfire properly and
accidentally, unintentionally, and
carelessly started the fire where no
open fires should have been started.
No fire ring, no rocks, no dug out
hole. I hadn’t seen a blaze like this
one in Galveston since I was a kid
on the 4th of July, standing on the
Seawall with my family and watching
another moron shoot bottle rockets at
the empty field to the left of the old
Sea Arama. Hence, that field burn out
too. So, when the hottie began to tell
me what happened, I told him with
my eyes that I already knew. I was
allowed to stay and watch the city paid
professional do his job. Watching, I
began to think. I thought of how dry
the ground was since we hadn’t had
any rain in weeks, I thought of all of
the houses that were less than 500
yards to the east of the approaching
flames, I thought of the 4th of July
and all of the fire works that would
be shot off like illegal rockets that
will ram blare, the California wild
fires, floor heaters, exposed electrical
wires, my house, my expired fire
extinguishers, how ugly the ground
looks after it is burned to dust and
how some people just don’t think.
Fortunately, the sirens of a much
larger, fast approaching fire truck
snapped me out of my turmoil. More
hotties went to work and convinced
me that they had everything under
control. Relieved, I took some shots
and left.

W had heard so much about Clear Lake, that we decided to check it out for ourselves

llies beyond Galveston County to the north? We’d better check it out! Calls, emails
and opportunity/possibility searches for this very issue you hold pushed the start
of the trip back to after 3 pm! Yikes! We still hadn’t eaten yet...gotta make lunch
fast...something exotic. Chick’Fil’A it is! (There is one also, we’ve reported, in the
hospital at UTMB too, but parking is a pain and pain is expensive!) So we asked the
people behind the counter... “Where is Clear Lake?” This would become a recurring
question as we attempted to see what exacly makes up “Clear Lake”, with a new
destination or direction given at each stop. We met many interesting and unique
people, learned a lot of facts and things about the area, and enjoyed all of the sights,
sounds, people and traffic. It seemed to us like this area also has huge potential for
growth. What were we looking for? What is one to do in an area totally unknown to
themselves? Find the wizards, of course. And while following the advice, instruc-
tions, and direction given by each of them, the real change was happening to us. We
were learning the area. We would grow to understand this new realm, it’s people, it’s
possibilities...all distant yet similiar to our own realm of understanding in Galves-
ton. Surely there are people in the now somewhat charted area of Clear Lake that
are just as filled with ideas, possibilities and viewpoints from their own realm. How
can we cultivate and learn from a relationship with this city? In the end, we drew
ourselves back into the “now” on our drive back to Galveston. In what ways can we
help Galveston and it’s community with positive growth and understanding? Where
are our Galveston Wizards? Who is ready to become an active participant in their
worlds? IT STARTS NOW. FROM WITHIN. AND WITH YOU. Clear Lake, like
Galveston in it’s county, is a mindset...so what should we set our minds to?

The surest sign of commitment to living on Galveston Island is to purchase a

home here. Yours truly did that in July, with a move-in date in the first week
of August. Yea!

Then, let’s talk about the huge stock of Victorian houses here that are desperately

seeking restoration and just plain love! This house at 1426 Avenue K is one
of them, and, it called my name out! So, I answered.

In 1895, a builder birthed triplets at the corner of 15th and K, a block away
from the Bishop’s Palace. Yes, three very similar 2
story houses with different front porch trim-outs.

Here we are, 113 years later, and these triplets are

‘a bit worn around the edges,’ having suffered
deterioration and disrespectful repairs in the
intervening years. Luckily, the basic good bones
are all there. My hope is that the gradual restoration
work to be done on the middle house will encourage
the other two home owners to realize their property’s
full potential.

Since many folks out there like the old houses, but are
perhaps overwhelmed by the amount of work that is
involved, and the order in which one might approach
the effort, this column will attempt to demonstrate how
you, too, might contribute to what makes Galveston
so desirable as your island home. And, I am moving

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your
sea waves crashing,

If you run a stop sign, and no one can see it, is it still there?

While I watch the cannons flashing I
clean my gun and dream of Galveston.

I moved to Galveston after Hurri-
cane Alicia. The only thing I knew
about Gavleston was Glen Campbell
had immortalized it in his cute little
song. At the end of the road I found
a rough, sleepy “live and let live”
town in which I sort of expect to have
something stolen and stop signs miss-
ing. The local joke was a professional
theft involved a pickup truck . NO
one living here remembers getting
a traffic ticket unless you did some-
thing really stupid.
In “83” all bets would have been
Galveston is in a perpetual recession
and it will never change. I needed a
baseline , a line in the sand that if it
did change, I would recognize it was
time to move on. I decided if I ever
got a traffic ticket it was time to go.
Well, not only did I get my ticket but
everyone in town has a brand new
ticket. It’s not the policemen. They
are just following orders and doing
their job. It is our new growth and de-
velopment. We are no longer taxed by
the $20 crack addict thefts but by the
$200 traffic ticket. We are now civi-
lized.
I was obviously innocent so I decided
to question the validity of my ticket.
After four trips to the courthouse and
many calls I got to turn in my ticket.
I checked the box “innocent and re-
quest a trial.“
I then received a letter stating that I
need be in court at 8 a.m. on a certain
day to plead my case.
As I sat in court with the lollipop,
thought of Thomas Jefferson which
states “better one hundred guilty men
go free than one innocent man be con-
demned, “ I noticed instead the prac-
tice was “better 100 innocent men be
condemned than one guilty man be
free.” Did I get that backwards? Not
at all. As I sat there and watched per-
son after person walk forward to the
district attorney or judge with an as-
suredness of innocence, I shuttered as
they all walked out guilty. How can
that be? Well, you get arrested and go
to jail. The next step is to talk with
the d.a. or judge. They immediately
say “let’s make a deal.” If we take
the time you spent in jail and apply
it to the fine, then we can let you go
today and you do not have to come
back. All you have to do is maybe
pay a little more to top off time spent
or if the time spent is enough then
you just plead guilty . If you do not
plead guilty you have to hire a law-
yer. For these offences the state does
not supply lawyers. Then you have
to come here at least one more time
and prove your innocence. I did not
say that they had to prove you were
guilty. I said you have to prove your
innocence. If by bad luck or by trying
to represent yourself, which everyone
knows is not a wise thing to do , you
end up with a guilty decision. Then
you may have to pay even more and
maybe go back to jail.. So what are
you going to do, my little chic-a-dee?
Of course you do not have money for
a lawyer and/or to take more time off.
Of course it is easier to plead and go
home. Most are young, apathetic and
naïve. They plea not realizing they
now have a criminal record to live
with the rest of their lives.
Far too many plead guilty just to keep
from going through the gauntlet of
proving your innocence.
After three hours it became my turn
to see the d.a. . He looked at my ticket
and said I had 3 choices. I could plead
guilty, plead innocent, or ask for a
deferment. No where on my ticket
had I marked any other option than
I pleaded innocent and wanted a jury
trial. I told him I did not come here
because I was guilty. I came here be-
cause I was innocent. Not that I felt
that I was innocent but because I was
innocent. I took out the photos of the
tree covered stop sign and he was im-
pressed. He stated I had a good case
but would not drop the charge. If I
was to pursue the innocent plea, then
I must get an appointment for a trial
with the judge.
Why was this step necessary? It
took me from my job. It clearly was
marked on my ticket that I pleaded
innocent. Was I going to be another
one of those sheep who folded by the
pressure of spending countless hours
waiting for the end of the judicial
gauntlet to prove my innocence? Yes I
was ! I went to the clerk desk and told
them I wanted a hearing. They smiled
and started to give me a date. Then to
make sure they understood me, I said
“make sure it is a jury trial.” I believe
in democracy. I believe in the people,
and if have to do a gauntlet to have a
chance to prove my innocence, then I
want the people to judge my case.
I agree that a jury trail for a stop sign
ticket seems excessive. I am a Thom-
as Jefferson American. I want every
person who walks into our court sys-
tem believing they are innocent to so
be respected for their beliefs in the
greatest system on earth processing
them with dignity and respect. When
they mark innocent on their ticket
they should not have to spend a day
in court trying to convince the sys-
tem that they want to plead innocent.
Those who plead innocence’s time
should be as highly valued as those
who work for the taxpayer who is
pleading innocent.

A window slammed shut on our hand...

Fellow staffer Isaac was on the out-
side, holding the once-noisy-and-
gurgling, but now draining-heavily
window unit. He shortly reported,
“I looked up and saw that the win-
dow had closed down on your
hands, I saw that you had this
wild look in your eyes, and your
mouth was so open that I could
practically see your brain!” I
only knew that it hurt, then and
after. We did know one thing
for sure, we needn’t look any
further for a way to discover

Reflecting on the Adventure

A famous actress, Helen Hayes,
once said “My mother drew a
distinction between achievement
and success. She said that
achievement is the knowledge
that you have studied and worked
hard and done the best that is in
you. Success is being praised by
others, and that’s nice, too, but
not as important or satisfying.
Always aim for achievement and
forget about success.” Forget
about success? Definitely
easier said than done. I have
the desire for success, the drive.
When I first started the little toy
shop on Mechanic Street I was
entirely filled with the hope for
its success. I was so excited at
the prospect of owning my own
little business, the idea of being
my own boss. The idea was to
offer unique gift items and toys
that you couldn’t find at any
big, monster retailer. Working
with my mother, a former retail
manager with over thirty years
experience, we forged a plan
to give Galveston something
different, something special. We
opened our funky little shop just
off the beaten path, marketing
ourselves as a toy and gift retailer
for all ages…something fun for
everyone. The challenges were
many, the location not ideal,
and we struggled consistently
to become known in Galveston.
Customers who walked in to
our shop constantly praised us.
They would say how cool and
fun we were. They would walk
around the shop laughing and
playing. The praise they gave
us felt earned. The compliments
and attention we were paid were
rewarding, but eventually the
effort outweighed the return.
Our business had become
cumbersome, no longer offering
the incentive it once had. I can’t
say what went wrong. All I can
say is we tried and we had an
amazing adventure doing so.
The achievement of owning a
business, the knowledge that we
studied, worked hard and did
the best that was in us has been
obtained. The success came
from the smiles on the faces
of our customers, the kids who
were rewarded with that special
toy from our shop, the people of
Galveston who appreciated us
and what, for a short time, we
offered this community. These
things will never be forgotten.

but the memories will remain.

Tourists! It’s a word I have heard used a lot
on the Island. I have heard it said in many
ways. In a tone of expectation from those
who rely on the income theygenerate. In a
tone of respect to those who wish to travel
and never have. In a tone of frustration
for those who have to deal with them
on a daily basis. In a tone of disgust for
those who have to clean up after them.
In a tone of resignation from those who
don’t have a choice. It wasn’t too many
moons ago that I came as a tourist to
Galveston Island. Like many others who
came before me, dating all the way back
to the earliest settlers like the Karankawa
Indians and the pirate Jean Lafitte, I too
fell in love with the Island. I know now
what caused me to do so. The escape from
reality. The ocean. The laughing gulls, the
dolphins, the waves that lull you to sleep.
The friendly people. So, like many others
before me, I packed my bags and hurried
to Galveston Island hoping…..for what?
To escape from reality? Because reality
sets in very quickly and you find out you
can’t live on dreams or on the back of the
dolphins, or riding the waves that lull you
to sleep. And the laughing of the gulls can
sound like mockery when your wallet is
empty.
It’s fun to be a tourist and travel to new
places, see beautiful places and sunsets
in towns you’ve never seen before.
People are always friendly when they are
pocketing your money. Wine and food
taste better when you aren’t the one doing
the cooking. And we all love it when we
don’t have to do any of the clean-up.
I think what it all boils down to is respect.
We need the tourists to respect the world
we live in and help to keep
it clean. We need to respect the right of
the tourist to go somewhere else if they
aren’t happy in the establishment.
We need to respect tourists while they

from reality. We need to take the time
to become a tourist. With the high price of
gas and cost of living, you have a unique
opportunity to explore your own town. It
doesn’t cost that much to visit something
you’ve never seen before. We all put off
visiting areas that are right around the
corner. Pretend you are coming from
England or Maine or France and visit
your own Island.
Take pictures, laugh and enjoy the land
you live on. It can be a memorable and
rewarding experience you will never
forget!

It was a Saturday night. June 21st to be more specific. A local entertainer
was going to be performing a sold out show at the Strand Theatre, located on
Mechanic Street...we’ve also got a Post Office on Church Street, we reasoned.
The show rained out a few ticket holders, with
some of them coming from as far as Houston to
partake in George’s antics on stage. Audience
participation was encouraged.
George Douglas Lee, “Guilty...With An Expla-
nation,” was a unique performance by George in a 2+ hour set of impromptu
jokes, observations, skits and songs he’s written. (www.cdbaby.com/all/george-

that the doors to the wonderful theatre remain open. Other forward-thinkers,
like Tony Dabney with his silent cou de ta film series, have been creating and
promoting uses of the theatre to breathe fresh life into the theater as well. Call

ATTENTION
PARENTS!
Recently Galveston EMS participated in the 2nd Annual Galveston Bicycle Day
that was sponsored by the Historical Galveston Downtown Partnership. The
HGDP donated children’s bicycle and extreme sports helmets to Galveston EMS’
Bike Team to be given away free to children accompanied by parents during the
event. Because of the generous donations, Galveston EMS was able to fit fourteen
kid’s with helmets and provide some bike safety tips. Also present was Galveston
Police Department, who provided on-site bike registration. Local bicycle shops
had bicycles for sale and at least one offered bicycle repair on site. All-in-all it
was a very enjoyable event down on the Strand as the weather was almost perfect

Life In the Not-So-Fast Lane

I recently took a trip to Aus- The dangers of riding a bike on city facing bicyclists on the island, thanks not the only victim of this sort of inci-

girlfriend and to celebrate her sister’s
birthday. While packing for our trip
we decided to take our bikes along
with us. Both of us have been using
our bicycles more and more for obvi-
ous reasons as transportation across
the island, for exercise, and for gen-
eral entertainment. With her sister
living less than 3 miles from Towne
Lake we figured it would be great to
bike down to the park. As we started
our ride the first thing I noticed was
the bicycle lanes. This is not the first
time I have seen these but it got me
thinking about why Galveston has not
implemented this type of safety for its
bike riders. As we rode there were ar-
eas where the lane ended but it was
obvious that more lanes were in the
process of being constructed. It was a
very comforting feeling knowing that
I did not have to worry about careless
drivers not watching for or consider-
ing the safety of bike riders.
In order to appreciate this
you have to know what it is like to
ride in Galveston. With traffic at its
peak right now, less attentive drivers,
tourists, and plain ole’ inconsider-
ate drivers it is sometimes dangerous
to ride a bike in Galveston. I myself
have been the victim of one or more
of these types of drivers, yes that is a
crosswalk you are blocking buddy! At
times just crossing Seawall Boulevard
can be a very dangerous thing to do.

no designated lanes for bikers? Why
when there is an obvious explosion
in bicycle sales and bicycle traffic
is there no discussion of bike lanes?
People buying bikes, renting surreys,
renting bicycles, or other non motor-
ized forms of transportation need a
safe lane of their own, at least on the
major streets and scenic avenues.
The Seawall makes for a very
scenic ride but can get pretty hairy
sometimes. People who set up camp
on the sidewalk, who don’t pay at-
tention their children, inattentive
people, and folks wearing headphones
can make for one hell of an obstacle
course or worse a tragic accident. Just
the other day my girlfriend was rid-
ing home from work in Bolivar when
she came up behind two other bik-
ers who were waiting to pass a group
of people walking and taking up the
width of the Seawall sidewalk. She at-
tempted to help by ringing her bell to
alert the group that bikers wanted to
pass. The group ignored her alerts and
continued to block the way, even mak-
ing a few rude comments! The two
gentleman in front of her attempted to
jump the small curb to pass the group
by riding through the parking lanes.
The first man made it and was nearly
hit by a car pulling into the parking
lane, the other fell trying to negotiate
the curb and hurt himself badly. Just
another example of the tribulations
rude people!
As if that was not enough a
new class of idiots has popped up in
the wake of internet stardom and sites
that promote filming and then posting
pranks. While riding to the east end a
couple of weeks ago I was assaulted
by 2 teenage boys about 15 years of
age. I was riding east as the two boys
were heading towards me. They split
up and took positions on my left and
right in what I thought was a nice ges-
ture to let me pass. As they passed
me the boy on my right threw a cup
of liquid at my face! Not only was I
temporarily blinded, but I nearly ran
off the Seawall! I was so shocked
that I stopped momentarily to think
about what had just happened, was it
water, urine, or something more sin-
ister? Honestly I can’t think of any-
thing much more sinister than urine,
I would rather deal with acid! I was
so upset that once I regained my bear-
ings I tried to catch them to give them
a piece of my mind or a whole foot. I
was even more furious when I start-
ed to give chase and my pedal broke
leaving me stranded 70 blocks from
home in 98 degree weather. Luckily
Jeff over at Island Bicycle was in and
had my bike back in working order in
a day, although the little degenerates
who “got” me cost me the price of the
repairs and robbed me of an otherwise
lovely day. After telling this story to
a couple of others I learned that I was

times a month not only to riders but
runners, walkers, and even women
walking their young ones! What’s
next, these same kids running people
off the seawall because they think its
funny?
As gas prices continue to rise
and the search for alternative fuels
continues to take the slow route, more
and more people are turning to bicy-
cles. This will inevitably lead to more
bike traffic and the need to protect
those riders. As always the responsi-
bility starts with the parents when it
comes to teaching safe riding habits
and rules of the road. For more expe-
rienced riders, if its has been a while
do some research online to brush up.
Once you are comfortable just make
sure you are always alert and ride
defensively. Nowadays it seems that
folks have forgotten that pedestrians
and bikes have the right of way and
that crosswalks are actually used by
us.
If you are a bike rider be care-
ful out there. If you feel the same let
it be known, you have a voice! I think
its high time that Galveston take some
initiative in protecting its citizens and
visitors alike by installing biking only
lanes for those of us who depend on
our bikes for a multitude of things.
