The environmental conditions in the oil and gas industry are mostly extreme. Salt-laden air in offshore applications, aggressive atmospheres in refineries or rough operation AUMA devices must operate reliably over many years without major maintenance requirements under all conditions. For this reason, AUMA have focussed on making their devices resistant to the most unfavourable conditions and have adapted protective measures to the state-of-the-art technology.

Enclosure protection IP 68
Multi-turn actuator with mounted gearbox
SAEx multi-turn actuator and GS worm gearbox combinations are supplied in enclosure protection IP 68-3 according to EN 60529. This means protection against immersion up to 3 m head of water for max. 96 hours. During continuous immersion, up to 10 operations are permissible. As an option, the combination is available with protection against immersion up to 8 m head of water.

Ambient temperatures
AUMA actuators are used in both hot and cold environments. Adapted versions with large temperature ranges are available to suit various ambient temperatures. Furthermore, the approved temperature ranges vary from one certification area to another. Refer to page xx for a detailed list.

Gearbox mounted separately from multi-turn actuator

GS worm gearboxes can be subjected to continuous immersion without any time limit. Standard enclosure protection is IP 68-3 and consequently immersible up to 3 m head of water. As an option, the gearboxes are available in enclosure protection IP 68-20. If the gearbox is mounted separately from the actuator, e.g. for buried gearbox service, the power transmission between multi-turn actuator and gearbox is performed via a shaft. Depending on the application, the pointer cover for valve display can be replaced by a protectivion cover.

Service conditions
Example of application with separately mounted gearbox
Valve and GS worm gearboxes are installed into a pit. The actuator is installed on a floor pedestal. All operation elements - local controls and handwheel - are perfectly accessible. Power is transmitted via a cardan shaft.

Modular concept
AUMA's claim is to be able to offer automa automation ation solutions to suit any valve. The product rang ge range consisting of sophisticated components form ms the forms basis for many combination options due to stan ndard standard interfaces. [1] SAEx .2 multi-turn actuators They play a crucial role within the product range. The speed range comprises 4 180 rpm, , the torque range covers 10 32,000 Nm. [2] Integral controls Actuators with AMExC or ACExC integra al integral controls are immediately ready for use. The inte egral integral controls contain switchgear units, power su upply y supply unit, interface to the DCS and the ability to process control commands and actuator feedback signa als. signals. The actuator can be operated on site via the loc cal local controls. [3] GS part-turn gearbox The combination between GS part-turn gea arbox gearbox and SAEx multi-turn actuators results in a part-t turn part-turn actuator. Torque range between 500 Nm fo or GS S 50.3 for up to 675,000 Nm for GS 630.3. The multi-turn n multi-turn actuator is generally mounted directly onto the gearbox. [4] LMS anti-backdrive device To be used when self-locking is essentia a l e.g g. g. essential e.g. for high speed actuators. The anti-backdrive e dev v ic ce device inhibits any valve displacement in case external forces act upon the closing element. This w ay, t he he way, the use of brake motors is not required.

[6] GS part-turn gearbox variants Four variants enhance options for optimum adaptation. This is due to the arrangement between worm shaft and worm wheel and the direction of rotation at output drive, with reference to a clockwise rotating input shaft. LL: Worm shaft left from worm wheel, counterclockwise rotation at output drive (red arrow) LR: Worm shaft left from worm wheel, clockwise rotation at output drive (blue arrow) RL: Worm shaft right from worm wheel, counterclockwise rotation at output drive (red arrow) RR: Worm shaft right from worm wheel, clockwise rotation at output drive (blue arrow)

[7] SAEx/GS mounting positions SAEx multi-turn actuators can be mounted to GS gearboxes at four different positions. Multiplied by the amount of gearbox variants, 16 mounting positions are feasible, 8 of which differ by outer dimensions. When indicating gearbox variants (RR, RL, LR or LL) and mounting positions (A, B, C, D), the positioning between actuator and gearbox is completely described. With reference to the illustrations, positions A and C can be mounted to the valve respectively shifted by 90. Consequently, the pointer cover of GS gearbox can be mounted in alignment with the flow direction. Please indicate the required mounting position when placing the order. However, subsequent modification can easily be performed on site.

Design principle
[5] Pointer cover Th large l pointer i cover provides id information i f i on The the valve position. It continuously follows the valve movement and consequently serves the purpose of running indication. In case of high enclosure protection requirements, AUMA recommend replacing the pointer cover by a protection cover [5a]. The protection cover is required for buried service. [6] Coupling Th separate coupling li enables bl easier i mounting i The of the gearbox to the valve. Upon request, the coupling is supplied with a suitable hole for the valve shaft. The coupling with bore is placed on the valve shaft and secured against axial movement. The gearbox can then be mounted onto the valve flange.

[8] Primary reduction gearing (option) The primary reduction gearings utilise planetary or spur gear stages to reduce the required input torque.

[9] Flange for mounting the multi-turn actuator In compliance with EN ISO 5210 or DIN 3210 As an alternative, a handwheel shaft can be fitted to mount a handweel when dealing with a manually operated valve.

[1] GS part-turn gearbox Size GS 200.3 with primary reduction gearing is shown.

[2] Gearbox housing The housing is made of cast iron. If extreme loads from outside have to be considered, AUMA recommend using spheroidal cast iron housings.

[4] End stops End stops limit swing angles and allow precise approaching of end positions during manual operation. For the AUMA design, the travelling nut [a] travels between both end stops [b] during operation. Advantages of this design: The low input torques and not the high output torques have an impact on the end stops End stops are separate from gearbox housing. Excessive input torques have no impact on the housing. Even in the event of end stop break, the main gearbox remains undamaged and can still be operated. A patented construction consisting of two safety wedge discs [c] per end stop prevents travelling nut seizure at mechanical stop. The unseating torque required amounts to merely 60 % of the torque previously applied to approach the end stop. stop

[3] Worm wheel and worm shaft They form the core components of the gearbox. The design allows high reduction within one gear and has an important self-locking effect thus preventing valve position displacement in case external forces act upon the closing element. As standard, the worm wheel is made of spheroidal cast iron. Certain applications require the use of bronze worm wheel, e.g. for modulating duty, for high input speed or for multi-turn application without end stop (refer to page 14). The worm shaft is designed as rotating counterclockwise or clockwise, depending whether the rotary direction of the gear input shall be maintained at gear output (RR and LR versions) or vice verse (RL and LL versions).

[10] Multi-turn actuator of SAEx type range SAEx multi-turn actuators and GS part-turn gearboxes are perfectly suited combinations with regard to torques and output speed. Combined they act as part-turn actuator. Mounting is performed using standardised output drive types and standardised flanges. The connection is secured with four screws. SAEx 10.2 multi-turn actuator is shown. Multi-turn actuators are available for open-close duty, SAEx for modulating duty, SAREx

[11] Integral controls (option) Actuators with AMEx or ACExC integral controls are immediately ready for use. The integral controls contain switchgear units, power supply unit, interface to the DCS and the ability to process control commands and actuator feedback signals. The actuator can be operated on site via local controls. The electrical connection between integral controls and actuator is made by using a quick release plug/socket connector. [7a] AMEx Controls comprising easy logic to process limit and torque signals as well as the control commands OPEN, STOP, CLOSE. Three indication lights at local controls indicate the actuator status.

For detailed information on SAEx multi-turn actuators refer to brochure: Electric multi-turn actuators with integral controls for applications in the oil and gas industry

[7b] ACExC (shown) Microprocessor based controls with comprehensive functionality and configurable interface. A graphic display indicates the actuator status in 33 different languages. When combined with the electronic control unit, all settings can be performed without opening the housing. The programming via menu navigation is made directly at the device or wireless via Bluetooth using the AUMA ToolSuite. ACExC controls are ideal for the challenging actuator integration into complex control systems. Support plant asset management. Information in gearbox sizing for various valve types
Torque load across total travel differs depending on the valve type.

Case 3 - Special valves

These include:

Case 1 - Butterfly valves

Starting point of torque definition is the torque curve of a butterfly valve in compliance with EN 15741-1 (dashed line in the diagram). When dimensioning the GS gearboxes, AUMA have q y modifying y g the curve. enhanced the requirements by

Louvre dampers Stack dampers Diverters - with or without toggle arm drive Guillotine isolator All these valve types are characterised by special torque curves. Further factors have to be considered like overload caused by stall torque or power branching, like for example in the case of guillotine isolators. In any case, individual gearbox/actuator dimensioning is required. AUMA have the required know how to support you with competence and expertise. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

Tmax

35 % 0 9 90

Worm wheel made of bronze - depending on the application

Tmax in this diagram corresponds directly to the maximum output torque of the technical gearbox data tables. Bronze material has improved gliding properties and higher corrosion protection characteristics than spheroidal cast iron. For this reason, AUMA recommend using worm wheels made of bronze for defined applications, e.g. for modulating duty. The reasons for using worm wheels made of bronze are summarised in the following document: "Selection criteria GS 50.3 250.3/GS 315 GS 500".

Case 2 - Ball and plug valves

Due to their design, the surface below ball and plug valve torque curves is larger, thus resulting in heavier load for the mounted g gearbox.

Tmax

Therefore, for ball and plug valve dimensioning, the following applies: The requirement torque Tmax for operating the ball and plug valve may only amount to maximum 80 % of the maximum output torque from the technical gearbox data tables.

Modulating duty
Bronze worm wheels are required for modulating duty. The maximum number of starts is decisive for calculating the lifetime. According to EN 15714-2, a start consists of one movement of minimum 1 % in both directions at a load of minimum 30 % of the nominal torque. The maximum number of starts for all sizes, except GS 630.3 is: 2.5 million
