LESSON PLAN

A Description of the class


Level : Upper Intermediate Students between the ages of 16 17,in the 10 th F grade at Colegiul National <Alexandru Ioan Cuza>,Ploiesti. The students are generally enthusiastic,but often tired: concentration and involvement sometimes suffers as a result. The class takes place from 15:10 to 16:00 on Tuesday.On the 13 th of December 2011,Carmen Chirasnel and Buga Roxana,both students in the last year at English-French,are going to teach under the supervision of the classs teacher,Mrs Carmen Stoian. A new unit, entitled Make Yourself at Home,will be introduced to the students.The first lesson of the chapter is entitled Going Underground.

B Recent work
Students have been made aware by the little connection that exists between what one studies and his/her future job and have enlarged upon this topic. Students have practised their reading and understanding skills. Students have improved their knowledge of writing a letter of intention.

C Objectives
1. To create interest in the topic of living spaces and specific vocabulary. 2. To create involvement in a discussion about their actual living space and their own desires related to it. 3. To create interest in the topic of unconventional houses. 1

4. To develop the ability of integrating missing pieces of information into a given text. 5. To improve argumentation skills by confronting the advantages and disatvantages of living underground. 6. To improve communication skills by simulating a real life situation.

D Contents
Objective 1: (Estimated time : 5 minutes) (a) Context: Living spaces (b) Activity/class organisatons: Frontal activity.Students are asked to describe the shown images refering to the articles of furniture. (c) Aids: Pictures and textbook (d) Language: All and any (e) Possible problems: Students may not know how the name of an object is called in English. The teacher will be prepared to provide the word.

Objective 2: (Estimated time : 10 minutes) (a) Context: Actual vs. future living space (b) Activity/class organisation: The students will work in pairs ex.3/61 and ex.4.b./61 from the textbook and will expose their conclusions to the class. (c) Aids: Textbook (d) Language: All and any; (e) Possible problems: Students may not know what types of living spaces are named as in ex.3.The teacher will be prompt and will provide them an explanation.

Objective 3: (Estimated time : 5 minutes) (a) Context: Unconventional houses (b) Activity/class organisation :The students,organised in groups will be asked to solve ex.1.a. ,1.b. , 1.c.,and then they will share their conclusion. (c) Aids: Textbook and whiteboard (d) Language: All and any (e) Possible problems: Students may not be familiar with practical issues of the construction of a house.The will provide them the necessary explanations. Objective 4: (Estimated time : 10 minutes) (a) Context: Fill in the gap exercise (b) Activity/class organisation: In pairs students have to fill in the gaps with the missing 2

sentence after having read the text and confront their answers. (c) Aids: Textbook. (d) Language: All and any; (e) Possible problems: Students may missplace the sentences.The teacher will ask anoter student to help he/she.

Objective 5: (Estimated time : 10 minutes) (a) Context: Pros and cons of living underground (b) Activity/class organisation: The students are asked to identify the advantages and disadvantages of living underground mentioned in the text and argue,divided into a PRO group and an AGAINST group,whether it worth buying such a house. (c) Aids: the board and textbook (d) Language: All and any (e) Possible problems: Students might not be able to decide on the matter.The teacher will ask them to count the arguments. Objective 6: (Estimated time : 10 minutes) (a) Context: Role play (b) Activity/class organisation: The students are organised in pairs and they are asked to simulate a dialogue between a saler of an underground house and a possible buyer.(at least 5 replies for each student). (c) Aids:None (d) Language: All and any (e) Possible problems: Students might not be able to come up with the necessary number of replies.The teacher will be prompt and and he/she will present options of continuing the dialogue.

E Additional possibilities
1. Analyse different meanings of the word good(ex. 4/63). 2. Enlarge upon given quotations related to the idea of home.(ex.4.a/61). 3. Discuss about possible homes of the future.(ex.7/63).
