prudent move and a demonstration of leadership by your body in anticipation of increased traffic and the attendant impending danger. One would love to see a meter of sorts set up to gauge traffic speeds. Some of the local residents of the area and I believe many cars top 45 mph going south on College once they cross the tracks. Its fairly stunning. I believe a speed bump would also be a wise investment. Hoping you will show leadership on this issue before an accident occurs.

City takes action on reorganization plans
eginning next year, city hall will be radically reorganized to best deal with the loss of about 20 percent of its staff.
The biggest adjustment will come in the Community Services Department, which will lose key areas of responsibility, gain a new director and even have its name changed. During fiscal year 2010-11, the Community Services Department trimmed its budget by $235,000 and another $300,000 in 2011-12. A total of 4 positions in the department were eliminated and another was switched from full time to part time. The cuts will affect landscape maintenance in the Village, Village Plaza, city yard and Oak Park cemetery, as well as tree trimming services. Contractors will replace two city-employed groundskeepers and a tree trimmer. Pat Malloy, the interim director for the department, will no longer serve in his position after December and 2 community services superintendents recently left through early retirement. Beginning in January, the newly named Community/Public Works Department will be headed by City
Engineer Craig Bradshaw. Meanwhile, Brian Desatnik, who currently serves as the citys Housing and Redevelopment Manager, will now take over for retiring community development director Tony Witt. Many of the Community Services Departments key responsibilities will be shifted over to other city departments. The Human Services Department under Director Mercy Santoro will now be responsible for oversight of Oak Park Cemetery, the Park Ranger Program, all city parks, building and facility maintenance and transportation. I see this as the most efficient and effective use of our staff now that we have reorganized, City Manager Jeff Parker said. Deeper cuts to the department could follow. In the fall, the city council will be reviewing the citys solid waste program to consider contracting out the service to the private sector. Since its inception, the city has run its own solid waste program which today has 17 full-time and 4 part-time staff members running the program. About $6 million of the departments $16.2 million budget goes toward the solid waste program. If the city council decides to contract out the service, the Claremont Police Department would take
over the Motor Repair Division. The changes are will go into effect at the beginning of the 2011. he Community Services Department will still manage infrastructure for the citys right-ofways, storm and sanitary sewer systems, street sweeping, concrete and asphalt maintenance, traffic signs, street lights, engineering and motor repair and maintenance. City officials said the reorganization will not impact the work of city commissions as their areas of responsibility are determined by city codes. We have no intention to change what the commissions will be reviewing, Mr. Parker said. Questions still remain about the future of the Community Services Department building on Monte Vista Avenue. Mr. Parker said there are several options for the building depending on whether the city continues to run the solid waste program. City staff is conducting an analysis on the building to determine whether it can be retrofitted for use as the police station. Other options would be to move the citys engineering staff into the building or lease out office space to the school district, other government agencies or even private businesses.

Legal dispute causes The Forks Chop House to close
he Forks Chop House has been forced to permanently shut down from its location in the Packing House due to a drawn out legal battle with its insurance company. The popular restaurant has been closed since December 2008 when a fire raged through its kitchen, causing significant structural damage.
The damage was repaired within a year, but restaurant owners did not have enough capital to re-open because their insurance company, Allied Insurance, refused to repay significant portions of business interruption fees, said Mick Bollinger, co-owner of The Forks. Its a very sad situation, Mr. Bollinger said. We spent 2 years building that restaurant and we put our whole lives into it. Now that has been taken away because an insurance company didnt do what they were supposed to do. The Forks opened in August 2007 and quickly received positive reviews from restaurant critics for its menu of steaks, seafood and gamey entrees like elk loin. Several months later, the restaurant was forced to change its name from Three Forks to The Forks due to trademark infringement claims by a restaurant chain in Texas with the same name. The final decision to leave the Packing House was made in recent weeks together with Packing House owner Jerry Tessier, who said it was no longer financially feasible to leave the space unused. Throughout this whole process, we were hoping to have The Forks return, Mr. Tessier said. Its a destination restaurant and was the anchor for the building. But we got to a point where we couldnt wait any longer. Our insurance company stopped covering losses of rent after one year and without any end in sight, we had no choice financially. Mr. Bollinger said he and co-owner Mark Bollinger are planning to file a lawsuit against Allied Insurance to recover the remaining losses from the business interruption and from being forced out of

the Packing House. Messages left for their Claremont-based lawyer were not returned. We have a reputation in this community and we feel that reputation has been tarnished, Mr. Bollinger said. A new restaurant featuring gourmet burgers will take its place and restaurant owners hope to open by January, Mr. Tessier said. Claremont will be Eureka Burgers third location following openings in Fresno and Redlands. Restaurant owners are planning to spend $300,000 to $500,000 to remodel the site to fit their restaurants needs. Robert Suzuki, an associate for Eureka Burgers, said the family-oriented restaurant features fresh food purchased from local sources, specialty beers
and crafted whiskeys and spirits. We try to do everything handmade, from shaping the burger patties to hand-cutting the French fries and making fresh salad dressings, said Robert Suzuki, an associate for Eureka Burgers. Its a gourmet take on comfort food. As for The Forks, Mr. Bollinger said he hopes to bring the restaurant back to Claremont again some day once the lawsuit is concluded. It is our intention to find a spot in the city to reopen, he said. We will do everything it takes.

Some progress made in latest round of talks

The Claremont Unified School District and the Claremont Faculty Association (CFA) still hope to reach a deal. CFA submitted a proposal to the CUSD negotiations team in July and the district responded on Monday night with a counter proposal that CFA President Joe Tonan believes is a step in the right direction. It was encouraging, Mr. Tonan said regarding the CUSD offer. Right now, were preparing a response. Mr. Tonan did not disclose details of the CUSD offer. Calls to CUSD Superintendent Terry Nichols regarding the district proposal were not returned before time of print on Tuesday. With its latest offer, CFA believes it can retain all the jobs of its bargaining unit members (teachers, counselors) without implementing furlough days during the 2010-11 school year. The districts proposal on June 16th called for all CFA bargaining unit members to take 6 furlough days for the coming academic year in order to guarantee their jobs through 2011. CFAs proposal included each bargaining unit member receiving $1500 less in district benefits annually for the next 2 years, a vacant counselors position at Claremont High School not being filled for the next 2 years ($100,000 savings per year), and class sizes in grades 7 through 12 increasing by one student for a savings of $200,000 per year for the next 2 years. A contingency was included in the offer for the district to progressively restore health benefits to its current levels if a bond measure passes in November or the districts financial situation improves. A lot of this will come out of the pockets of our bargaining unit members, Mr. Tonan explained. It would be nice to be able to get some breathing room. The Reduction In Force (RIF) has been very hard on teachers and some teachers still dont know if they will have a job at this point. CUSD meeting to have bond implications The CUSD Board of Educations vote this Thursday will determine whether the district will go forward with a bond measure. One of several items the board will decide at the next board meeting, a bond would help the district to pay off current debts, create a technology endowment, repair and upgrade district buildings and infrastructure, and invest in energy efficiency. With board members Mary Caenepeel and Jeff Stark discussing the benefits of the bond at last weeks Active Claremont public forum, Thursdays board vote seems likely to go forward with the bond. CUSD is currently consulting with TBWB Strategies, the same company that worked with the district in 2000 to pass Measure Y. All $48.9 million of the Measure Y bond has been spent with a balance of approximately $30 million still remaining for the district to pay back. This years measure would issue $95 million in bonds if approved. Along with the resolution regarding a bond measure, the board will also vote on adopting a resolution challenging Californias school finance system and to employ a new assistant superintendent of educational services. Thursdays meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the board room of the Richard S. Kirkendall Education Center.

I think everyone here is quirky and that makes it fun, she said. I am a better actor now because of the program. I wasnt a very good actor when I first came here. Both Amy and Madi will be participating in the upcoming production. As one of 12 dancers, Amy will be moving to Broadway tunes during the musical portion of the show. The performance will also include a dance number for the entire cast. It was very difficult preparing for it because this is my first time dancing like this, Amy said. Im learning the dances but Im not a dancer. Its been really fun though. Madi will play one of 4 doctors who tell Sadako that she has been diagnosed with leukemia. Playing her role has been both a challenge and delight for the 13-year-old. What were doing is serious but almost depressing, Madi explained. Im kind of excited because this is more of a test of acting. Comedy is easier to pull off while its hard to write. But with something serious like this, you have to really play the role and get into it. Show times for Summer Spectacular are at 7 p.m. on July 29-31 and 2 p.m. on July 31st and August 1st. All performances will be held in the Virginia Princehouse Allen Theatre at the Seaver Theatre Complex on the Pomona College campus. A summer afternoons Claremont idyll

wasnt thinking about it being one hundred years old. I wasnt thinking about the Fourth of July coming up and that it was where the holiday was celebrated in the towns early days.
All I was thinking was that I had forgotten my wallet and that it was too late to go back home and get it before the movie started and that I didnt want to just stay home that Saturday. I was thinking that it was a nice afternoonnot too warm, surprisinglyand I decided to spend some time enjoying the grounds of The Colleges. Thats what I thought when I found myself pretty quickly at the Greek Theater at Pomona College. It didnt take long for me to be reminded that, sometimes, the best things are right here in our backyard. And that we dont see this more often and dont take advantage of these treasures in our midst. This was certainly not the first time for me to see the Greek Theater, located just to the north behind the Seaver theater building at the eastern end of Bonita Avenue. I just had not checked it out for a few years. When I was there, it had been renovated and re-dedicated to the name of Frederick Sontag, the longtime, beloved Pomona College philosophy professor who has since died. In the intervening years, it has only gotten better. With its gently sloping, carefully signed paths, including for wheelchairs, and its trimmed yet natural and wild setting, ringed with gracefully shady trees, this venue has gotten to be most pleasant and inviting. There is even a barbecue pit and picnic spot over on the side. The amphitheater itself is a good size and is crisply and elegantly defined. It is clearly laid out, with nice, broad tiers with thoughtfully placed sections for wheelchairs, and it is clean and almost sparkles.

I dont recall seeing the amphitheater the first time I was there. It was a picnic dinner with my family celebrating my birthday as part of a joint birthday party with another faculty family. The picnic area certainly wasnt there, and I dont think there were any neat pathways. In fact, I remember feeling very special that I could have my birthday party thereit seems that a gate and a key were involvedand that it was a very special evening. I think vichyssoisethe height of decadence to me thenwas featured. Since then, I have seen a few events at the Greek Theater. I saw a student production of Jesus Christ Superstar one afternoon with a rollicking live band (in which a friend of mine played keyboards) and with Judas running out of and then disappearing into the wild park area, called the wash, behind the theater. It did look very biblical, with the bright sun, the dusty stage and the surrounding trees. I have also gone to two or three fairs, all probably with an environmental theme, held there over the years. On this recent Saturday afternoon, however, as I wandered over the tiers and onto the stage, I thought of how little this magnificent venue is used, how, even if it hasnt been forgotten with its beautiful renovation, it is all but abandoned. Yes, the students were long gone, but I imagined that, even when school is in session, it is the perfect frat boy getaway. I imagined that it is a nice, quiet, almost secret
place to hold initiations and mysterious ceremonies. Togas and rowdy, inebriated partying would definitely not be out of place in this setting, although the college would also definitely not condone such behavior. I also had similar imaginings as I wandered a bit through the wash and wondered if it was okay for me to be there. (There were no No Trespassing signs but also none indicating when or if it is open to the public.) With its abundant foliage and dirt roads leading off in all directions, it appeared to be an ideal place for students (and others) to do and have things that they shouldnt. Indeed, I have heard rumors and reports of clandestine meetings and trysts in the wash. The wash, however was another storyor many stories. The real story that afternoon was the Greek Theater. I kept thinking that the occasional dorm hall barbecue, a fair and a play now and then, an undercover birthday party and whatever sneaky and perhaps dubious activities take place there are practically a waste of this lovely space. All the more so since it has been made so inviting and charming. This, it seems to me, is an invitation waiting to be accepted. This is a venue calling out to be used, especially on these summer evenings. Yes, Memorial Park is very nice, and the Village has some pleasant offerings now. But, Im thinking, what if the City or an organization or two worked with Pomona College to put up some stage lights? I cant imagine anything much more enchanting than summer evenings at our Greek Theater right here. See where my wandering and wondering lead to on a nice summer afternoon? I also saw a colorful, hand-painted sign on my way into the theater. It said the farm in teasing, tantalizing script and had an arrow pointing off into the wild. But that was a whole other adventure.

ecently, my husband purchased for me, as a gift, a canning set. And I didnt unwrap it and scream at him in disbelief, What am I, a pioneer woman?!

That being the case, I pretty much did what they told me to doincluding much of the cooking and all of the homework assignments. Unlike many of my friends who helped their moms with chores in the kitchen, I had very little experience in the room with the refrigerator and the stove. My mom seemed to relish the solitude of her kitchen (at least thats what I tell myself now) and even with four daughters, did not ask us for help. She made delicious dishes that often required a full day of simmering, roasting or stewing, but she was also a fan of the many new-fangled, easy-to-use products of the timeseveral of which were endorsed by people you could trustTang (the astronauts), Skippy peanut butter (Annette Funicello), Kelloggs packaged cereals (The Monkees). Its exciting now, but I wasnt always so pleased by the prospect of putting-up food. When I started high school in the fall of 1973, I was incredulous that I got, as an elective, a cooking classI couldnt imagine how it would help me become the first female president of the United States (a feat I guess I could still achieve if I started fundraising now) or a newswoman like my then heroine, Mary Richards. I was new to the area and the school, so when the teacher, Mrs. Short, asked us to break off into cooking groups for the semester, I found myself in a quar-
porated the new cuisine of the early 1970s so we made quiche, and chicken with a gloppy sauce of condensed cream of mushroom soup. But Mrs. Short (who, once, when I was burning lard in a frying pan, I accidentally called Mrs. Shortening) also wanted us to learn the basics, and so we put up some strawberry jam. It was, and still is, a mystery to me that somewhere in history, someone figured out that you can dunk a jar of food in 212-degree boiling water and save it on your shelf, without refrigeration, for upwards of 2 years. I couldnt understand the relevance of canning with aisles of ready-to-eat (and sanitary, as in not made by teenagers) foods at the grocery store. Still, I felt like Madame Curie as I eagerly led my group through the exercisegoggles, tongs, clanking glass, a vat of boiling waterwe werent curing anything, but we were stopping bacteria in its tracks! Somewhere at my parents house exists the cookbook we created in that cooking classIm pretty sure it has the recipe for strawberry jam. I asked my husband if he thought it would still be practical and he replied, If we dont get botulism, well know its still good. As a cook, I guess you cant ask for a better endorsement.
Summer movie musicals

Residents are invited to bring a blanket and a picnic and meet on the front lawn of The Pitzer House at Sunrise of Claremont for a series of outdoor movie screenings. A celebration of life memorial service for Florence Weinstein will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Temple Beth Israel, 3033 N. Towne Ave., Pomona. Ms. Weinstein, a 55-year resident of Claremont and the Pomona Valley, died on July 14, 2010 at the age of 88. Memorial donations may be made to the Mt. San Antonio Gardens Scholarship Fund or the Temple Beth Israel Music Fund. A more complete account of Ms. Weinsteins life will be published in an upcoming edition of the COURIER. New dean at Claremont School of Theology

Dr. J. Philip Wogaman has been named Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean at Claremont School of Theology for the 2010-2011 academic year while the school searches for a permanent dean. According to a CTS news release, Dr. Wogaman is a prominent figure in national religious, academic, political and interfaith circles. He is professor emeritus of Christian ethics at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., where he taught from 1966 to 1992 and served as academic dean from 1972 to 1983. he Claremont AYSO Girls U12 Select team found soccer bliss nearly 2 weeks ago at the AYSO National Games in Wellington, Florida.
The high humidity and 90-degree temperatures of the Sunshine State couldnt prevent 10 members of the Claremont All-Star team from embracing high caliber youth soccer from July 5th through 10th. Katherine Arboleda, Emily Bird, Julia Cantrell, Izabella Edwards, Danielle LaGrave, Jordyn Marable, Riley McLachlan, Natasha Minaie, Alexa Tisopulos and Christina Vazquez were the Claremont players who attended the event. It was like 250-degrees, Danielle said. You just had to keep drinking lots of fluids and pace yourself. It was interesting to meet people from other states. Since 1988, the AYSO National Games have invited AYSO players from throughout the country to come together to pay tribute to the worlds most popular sport. The Claremont AYSO Girls U12 Select team was one of the 240 teams chosen several months ago. The All-Star squad was just one of 24 teams to be selected in the U12 age group. Once the Claremont team was selected, the next challenge was to raise $13,000 to travel to Florida and participate in the event. Through fundraisers, local sponsors from businesses and community organizations and other community support, the team met its goal by June. Claremont coach Jimmy Martinez is thankful for the support the team received. He believes the efforts provided an unforgettable experience for his team. Its amazing that we were able to raise $13,000, he said. The event was great. It was about having fun and not worrying about whether you win or lose. Its just about playing soccer. I talked to other coaches and listened to their stories about how they got there. But for us, it was even more fulfilling because of how the community supported us. Just one day after arriving in Florida, the Claremont players took part in Olympic-style opening cer-

emonies. The next day, all of the AYSO participants were placed on teams with players from other states. Each team played twice and the players switched pins representing their cities as a sign of friendship. I really liked playing with players from other
states, Emily said. It was just the fact that we were meeting new people that was nice. I had 2 players from Hawaii and another player from North Carolina on my team. I met new friends and exchanged emails with some of them. Claremont began competitive play with 3 days remaining for the event. After playing to a 1-1 deadlock against Chicago, Claremont then dropped a 4-0

decision on Hawaii. Alexa suffered a sprained ankle during the 2nd game of the day. I would have loved to keep going but I had to stop because of my ankle,
Alexa said. I still watched all the games through and some of the games were really competitive. Claremont had no substitute players during the final 2 days of play due to Alexas injury. The Select team defeated both Utah and Kansas but lost to
Florida. The AYSO National Games was only one part of the Florida experience for the Claremont players. The team visited other tourist attractions such as the Everglades, Miami Beach and South Beach. I really like the activities we did, Izabella said. We did a safari and got to see giraffes and zebras. More than 10 days removed from
the trip, the Claremont players are back on the soccer field at Lewis Park again during weekday evenings. The 2010 AYSO season will begin in September. We had a week off when we got back and now were getting ready to start a new season, Alexa said. But the AYSO National Games was one of the biggest experiences that weve had and that Claremont has had.

Who? Jess Swick, 32-year Claremont resident, chartered financial consultant with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company Recent reads: For a quick, intriguing read, Mr. Swick plowed through Liars Poker by Michael Lewis, a personal memoir in which the author draws readers into his 4 years as a bond salesman with the Wall Street firm, Salomon Brothers. Reviews suggest that the book exposes readers to how Wall Street really works. Its common to find Mr. Swick reading autobiographies, biographies and historical novels, but his reading spans a wide range of genres and subjects. What I gravitate to depends on my mood and who gives me the book, he said. If a friend or my wife says, Jess, you gotta read this book, then I read the book. Works of fiction are high on his list of favorites and can transfix and transport him so thoroughly that he causes those near to question, Where are you, Jess? I can get completely lost in a novel, he said. I like good yarns. Whether theyre true or not doesnt really matter. We all make things up so it all works for me. Mr. Swick recalls participating in the summer reading club at the funky little library in his childhood hometown, Bloomington, earning stickers for every book he read. Forming an early love of reading that endured, he devours books with hardly a break between. If I dont have a book, I feel like somethings missing. Currently reading: Mr. Swick has just started The Story of Edgar Sawtelle: A Novel by David Wroblewski. The book tells the intense story of young Edgar, a boy born mute and growing up in a dog-breeding family in remote Wisconsin. He maintains a special relationship with his canine best friend, Almondine, and when untoward events unfold in his family, including the suspected murder of his father, Edgar takes off with 3 of his dogs on a coming-of-age journey. Asked if it was a heart-wrenching book, Mr. Swick replied, I hope so. I love those kind of books. Potential readers, be forewarned: numerous reviews indicate that although the narrative is engaging and powerful, the ending is deeply disappointing. If you enjoy spending hours immersed in promising prose that concludes with one of the most dreadful endings in the history of American literature, then by all means buy this book, wrote reviewer Walter Scott. Favorites: One hundred percent stymied when asked to name a favorite book, Mr. Swick opted to share his long list of favorite authors, among them Kent Follett, Louis LAmour, Irving Stone, Jack London, John Steinbeck, John Jakes, Sandra Brown, James Michener, Michael Crichton, Dan Brown, John Grisham and the list continues (and every now and then you read something off the Oprah list thats good, he added). He noted that Kent Folletts bestselling book, The Pillars of the Earth, and its sequel, World Without End were phenomenal books that were made even more meaningful to him with a visit to Europe during which he visited many of the cathedrals and castles written about in the sweeping novels. The historical novels (or funky stories, said Mr. Swick) of Philippa Gregory, in their descriptions of castles and their presentations of what royal life might have been like, touched him similarly (The Other Boleyn Girl, The Constant Princess, The Queens Fool, etc). Mr. Swick is not alone in his appreciation of The Pillars of the Earth, with the paperback version still selling roughly 100,000 copies per year in the US, said the author on his website (www.ken-follett.com). Gushing, Mr. Swick spoke at length about his absolute favorite biographical novel, Sailor on Horseback: Jack London, by Irving Stone. After the books final page, he immediately purchased the complete

works of Jack London and read them cover to cover, he said. On the lighter side of things, Mr. Swick raved about the humor of bestselling novelist Ferrol Sams and his sidesplitting trilogy that follows the semiautobiographical adventures of the Porter Sambo Osborne Jr. as he grows up in rural Georgia. He noted Mr. Sams first novel, Run With the Horseman (published at age 60), as particularly enjoyable. These books are just a hoot, he said. Its not humor where you find the laugh in between the lines, its right out there and grabs you. Mr. Swick was also recently amused and entertained by My Life in France, the bestselling memoir by the flamboyant chef so many of us love, Julia Child. Currently, the feature film Julie & Julia is based upon this enchanting memoir. It was just an incredibly wonderful book, said Mr. Swick. Her sense of humor is funnier than hell. He has also happily conquered all of the Harry Potter books.
Favorite book nook: Not inclined toward any one particular place to obtain his books, Mr. Swick gets them just about anywhere and everywhere, such as Borders, airport bookstores (When you just gotta have something to read, he said.) and from family and friends who know of his penchant for reading. Favorite place to read: Mr. Swick can contentedly read for hours in bed, but doesnt really have one favored spot. To him, any place is a favorite place. Wherever I am with a book, he said. A last thought on reading from Mr. Swick: Reading not only expands your mind and passes the time, its sort of like eating good food: it just makes you feel good.

PUBLISHED PILOT Ron Caravello, a licensed pilot who is now legally blind, recently took to the skies again from Cable Airport with the help of a flight instructor. Mr. Caravello wrote an article about his experience which was published in the July, 2010 edition of Aviation and Safety Magazine, South Africa. The article was also published in In Flight USA magazine in June.
