THIS INSTRUCTION GUIDE CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFORMATION. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND STORE IN A SAFE PLACE.
The SRAM XX front derailleur requires specific adapters to fit certain 2009 Epic models to guide the derailleur cable in the correct path to reach the front derailleur cable pinch bolt. Please read the following instructions. If you have any doubt regarding your mechanical ability and/or installation of this product, visit your local authorized dealer. Specialized recommends that the adapter be installed by a qualified mechanic. WARNING! The 2009 Specialized Epic adapters are required for proper function of SRAM XX front derailleurs (Fig.1 for Carbon frames with carbon chainstays, Fig.2 for alloy frames with alloy chainstays). Use of a SRAM XX front derailleur without the correct adapter will result in poor cable path and front derailleur action, resulting in very poor shifting performance and potential frame and/or chainstay damage.
WARNING! Carbon frames with alloy chainstays are not compatible with SRAM XX front derailleurs. Use of the #2 adapter with a carbon front triangle will result in contact when the suspension is fully extended / topped out, which may lead to frame damage.
INSTALLING THE FRONT DERAILLEUR
1. Install the derailleur as shown in the SRAM instructions. SRAM offers the XX derailleur in two compatible models, S1 and S3 direct mount. The S1 (Fig.3) is the recommended derailleur, as it does not require an adapter. The S3 (Fig.4) requires the Specialized direct mount adapter supplied with Epic models. SRAM derailleurs are also sized specifically to the chainring size. Make sure the derailleur matches the desired chainring configuration. 2. Install the correct adapter for the chainstay (see Fig.1 & 2). Carbon frames with alloy chainstays are not compatible with SRAM XX front derailleurs. 3. Install the cable and housing into the chainstay adapter, then bolt the cable into the front derailleur clamp and torque to SRAM specifications.
