THE ROBOT PROJECT

This Final Project will be due on the day of the Final: ___________________________. Spend quality time working on this in class. In order to get an outstanding grade on this project, you will need to turn in all written work, show all calculations, follow all directions, and be mathematically accurate. You will work with a partner. PROJECT REQUIREMENTS: Build a robot using household items (cereal boxes, funnels, paper towel rolls) or inexpensive items purchased at an arts and craft store. Your robot must: -Have the basic body parts: arms, legs, body, head with face -Be made of at least 2 different geometric solids -Be colorful 1. Draw a blueprint of your robot. Include all measurements of each object to the nearest tenth of a centimeter. Measurements should include (if applicable): a) length, width, height, radius b) surface area and volume of each solid c) surface area and volume of robot 2. Answer as many parts of the challenge question as you can.

Evaluation/Grading: The project will be graded on the rubric. Accuracy of the mathematics and the measurements, neatness and appearance, and reflection on your work are all components in the grading. Good luck and have fun!

THE ROBOT PROJECT GRADING RUBRIC

The Robot______/10 o Well built and sturdy (2 pts) o Good design features and colorful (4 pts) o Has 2 different geometric solids (4 pts) Calculations._____/16 o o o o o All formulas and work shown (4 pts) Correct surface area calculations for each solid (4 pts) Correct surface area calculations for entire robot (2 pts) Correct volume calculations for each solid (4 pts) Correct volume calculations for entire robot (2 pts)

Challenge Question..______/6

Total Score ______/32

1) Draw a blueprint of your robot. Include all measurements for each solid (length, width, height, radius) rounded to the nearest tenth of a centimeter.

2) Calculate the volume of each solid in cm. Show all formulas and calculations. Add the volumes of all solids that make up your robot together to find the total volume of your robot (dont forget both arms and both legs!).

3) Calculate the surface area of each solid in cm. Show all formulas and calculations. Add the surface areas of all solids that make up your robot together to find the total surface area of your robot. Make sure to subtract any areas that are not on the robots surface.

Robots Total Surface Area: __________________________

CHALLENGE PROBLEM: 1) A meteor shower just hit the area and affected your robot. It increased in size by a scale factor of 5 (it got 5 times bigger than its original size). Complete the following calculations to discover what this did to the volume and surface area of the robot. a. Choose one part of your robot (like the head or arm) and draw the solid with dimensions that are five times larger. Label all dimensions (length, width, height, radius).

b. Calculate the volume and surface area for the enlarged part of your robot. Show all formulas and calculations.
Volume Calculations: Surface Area Calculations:

Volume of Enlarged Part: Volume of Original Part:

Surface Area of Enlarged Part: Surface Area of Original Part:

c. Compare the old volume and surface area to your new calculations. Write a paragraph (3-5 sentences) in the space below to explain what happened to the volume and surface area when the dimensions became 5 times bigger.
