Durability and Fire Resistance
Nominal cover for mild conditions of exposure =20mm,

Ultimate load =0.425(1.4gk +1.6qk)
=0.425(1.4 x 6.7 +1.6 x 2.0) =5.35 kN/ m

Minimum rib width =125mm, max-pan =300mm
Consideration of 0.425m width of floor as supported by each rib

Ultimate load on a 5m span, F =5.35 x 5.0 =26.7 kN

from the table of tension reinforcement modification factors, by
interpolation, the modification factor =1.62. For a T-section
with the web width 0.31 x flange width the basic ratio is 20.8
from table of basic span-effective depth ratios.

Thus, d =200mm is adequate

Shear

125 x 200

From the table of values of ultimate shear stress, vc =0.74
N/ mm

; therefore the section is adequate in shear, and since v <
vc no links are required provided that the bars in the ribs are
securely located during construction.

You will notice that we used the weight of a 200mm deep slab,
we incorporated the weights of the partition walls and finishes
in the design and we also used an imposed load that is more
than enough (we could even have used 1.5kn/ m
2
which is very
much acceptable for apartment or single family housing units).
And we also used the lowest grade of reinforced concrete C20.

We even did not use T10 bars but T12 even after determining
that the former was adequate.

A slab beam that would be adequate over a span of 5m without
causing undue sagging would have to be at least 675mm wide
and in this case it is unwarranted the design is adequate,
consider 226mm for 2 T12 Vs. 157mm for 2 T10 (69mm
difference =one 9mm bar) and that every rib is a beam in itself
for which we have also determined we do not need links and
compression reinforcement.
