HISTORY

A VAIO RS desktop computer. Although Sony made computers in the 1980s exclusively for the local (Japan) market, the company withdrew from the computer business around the turn of the decade. Sony's re-entry to the global computer market under the new VAIO brand, began in 1996 with the PCV series of desktops. Etymology Originally an acronym of Video Audio Integrated Operation, this was amended to Visual Audio Intelligent Organizer in 2008 to celebrate the brand's 10th anniversary. The branding was created by Timothy Healy to distinguish items that integrate consumer audio and video with conventional computing products, such as the VAIO W Series personal computer, which functioned as a regular computer and a miniature entertainment center. The VAIO logo also represents the integration of analog and digital technology with the 'VA' representing an analog wave and the 'IO' representing a digital binary code.

Products Sony has expanded its use of the VAIO brand, which can now be found onnotebooks, subnotebooks, desktops and media centres. Network media solutions by Sony will also carry the VAIO brand. VAIO notebooks are currently shipped with Microsoft Windows 8 or

withWindows 8 Pro In mid-2005 a hidden partition on the hard drive, accessible at boot via theBIOS or within Windows via a utility is used instead of recovery media for many VAIO laptops. Pressing [F10] at the VAIO logo during boot-up will cause the notebook to boot from the recovery partition; where the user has the choice of either running hardware diagnostics without affecting the installed system, or restoring (reimaging) the hard drive to factory condition an option that destroys all user installed applications and data). When first running a VAIO system out of the box, users are prompted to create a set of recovery DVDs, which will be required in case of hard disk failure and replacement with a new drive. In cases where the system comes with Windows 7 64 bit pre-installed the provided recovery media restores the system to Windows 7 32 or 64 bit. Therefore, the user must create their own recovery disks. Also included as part of the out-of-box experience, are prompts to register at Club VAIO, an online community for VAIO owners and enthusiasts, which also provides automatic driver updates and technical support via email, along with exclusive desktop wallpapers and promotional offers. On recent models, the customer is also prompted to register the installed trial versions of Microsoft Office 2010 and the antivirus software(Norton AntiVirus on older models, and McAfee VirusScan or TrendMicro on newer ones) upon initial boot.

as Intel processors, Seagate

Technology,

Hitachi, Fujitsuor Toshiba hard

drives, Infineon or Elpida RAM, Atheros and Intel wireless chipsets, Sony (usually made by Hitachi) or Matsushita optical drives, Intel, NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards and Sony speakers. Recent laptops have been shipped with Qimonda RAM, HP speakers with Realtek High Definition Audio Systems, and

optional Dolby Sound Room technology. As of 2013, Sony VAIO's range counted on 7 different products. The most basic are the models contemplated in the E, T and S series while the high end model, the Z Series, has been discontinued. Sony also has a range of hybrid computers, with models called VAIO Duo 11 and VAIO Tap 20, as well as a desktop computer under the L series. Currently, models use Windows systems

and Intel processors, as described above. Technology

VAIO Z series (2008) Keyboard and switch buttons Some Sony Vaio models come with Sony's proprietary XBRITE (known as ClearBright in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region) displays. The first model to introduce this feature was the VAIO TR series, which was also the first consumer product to utilize such technology. It is a combination of smooth screen, anti-

reflection (AR) coating and high-efficiency lens sheet. Sony claims that the smooth finish provides a sharper screen display, the AR coating prevents external light from scattering when it hits the screen, and the high-efficiency lens sheet provides 1.5 times the brightness improvement over traditional LCD designs. Battery life is also extended through reduced usage of the LCD backlight. The technology was pioneered by Sony engineer Masaaki Nakagawa, who is in charge of the VAIO TR development. The TX series, introduced in September 2005, was the first notebook to implement an LED back-lit screen, which provides lower power consumption and greater color reproduction. This technology has now been widely adopted by many other notebook manufacturers. The TX series was also the first to use a 16:9 aspect ratio screen with 1366x768 resolution. The SZ series was the first to use switchable graphics the motherboard contained an Intel GMCH (Graphics Memory Controller Hub) featuring its own in-built graphics controller (complete memory hub controller and graphics accelerator on the one die) and a separate NVIDIA graphics accelerator chipset directly interfaced with the GMCH. The GMCH could be used to reduce power consumption and extend battery life whereas the NVIDIA chipset would be used when greater graphics processing power was needed. A switch is used to toggle between the graphics options but required the user to preselect the mode to be used before the motherboard could initialize. The Z series has recently replaced the SZ series and does not require a restart of the system to change graphic modes on Windows Vista, which can be done "on the fly". This feature has subsequently been used by other manufacturers, including Apple, Asus and Alienware. The high-end AR Series VAIOs were the first to incorporate a Blu-ray Disc burner. This series was designed to be the epitome of high-definition products including

a 1080p capable WUXGA (1920 1200 pixels) screen, HDMI output and the aforementioned Blu-ray burner. The AR series also includes an illuminated logo below the screen. Blu-ray/HDMI capable models have been the subject of intense promotion since mid-2007, selling with a variety of bundled Blu-ray Discs. The AR series was subsequently replaced by the AW series, which incorporates all of these features in a 18.4" 16/9 display. Another addition to the VAIO series is the TZ model. This new design features a 64GB Solid State Drive (SSD) for rapid boot-ups, quicker application launches and greater durability. If selected, a 250GB Hard Drive may also be included in place of the built-in CD/DVD drive to provide room for additional storage. For security, this model includes a biometric fingerprint sensor and Trusted Platform Module. The TZ offers a Built-in highly miniaturized Motion Eye camera built into the LCD panel for video conferencing. Additional features include the XBRITE LCD, integrated Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) technology and Bluetooth technology. A selection of media centres were added to the VAIO range in 2006. These monitorless units (identified by a product code prefixed by VGX rather than VGN) are designed to form part of a home entertainment system. They typically take input from a TV tuner card, and output video via HDMI or composite video connection to an ideally high-definition television. So far this range includes the XL and TP lines. The VGX-TP line is visually unique, featuring a circular, 'biscuit-tin' style design with most features obscured behind panels, rather than the traditional set-top box design. Bundled software Sony has been criticized for loading its VAIO laptops with bloatware, or ineffective and unrequested software that supposedly allows the user to

immediately use the laptop for multimedia purposes. Dell had been accused of the same practice, but after strong customer feedback agreed to offer "limited" preinstalled software on its machines. Sony now offers a "Fresh start" option in some regions with several of their business models. With this option, the computer is shipped only with a basic Windows operating system and very little trial software already installed. The default webcam software in VAIO notebooks is ArcSoft WebCam Companion. It offers a set of special effects called Magic-i visual effects, through which users can enhance the images and videos taken through the webcam. It also features a face detection feature. Certain other Sony proprietary software such as Click to Disc Editor, VAIO Music Box, VAIO Movie Story, VAIO Media Plus are also included with recent models. Those shipped with ATI Radeon Video cards feature the Catalyst Control Centre, which enables the user to adjust the various video features such as brightness, contrast, resolution etc., and also enables connection to an external display. Problems Heat problems On September 4, 2008, Sony announced a worldwide voluntary product inspection and rework program for TZ-series notebook computers manufactured since June 2007. All model numbers beginning with VGN-TZ1 and VGN-TZ2 were eligible, along with some VGN-TZ3 notebooks. The issue involves "a limited number of units" which could potentially "generate heat around the DC jack inlet and frame of LCD screen, which creates the potential of deformation of the plastic casing".[4] In the United States, the service offered is generally on-site, whilst in the rest of the world it typically involves collection of the notebook by a courier,

often DHL, for servicing in a Sony repair center. ChannelWeb reports that 100,000 units have been recalled. VGN-CS Series Cooling Fan failure On affected VAIO notebook computers, the cooling fan will start to make an unusual noise. For affected models highlighted in this notice, Sony offers a free repair service for two years starting from the purchase date. Concerns regarding hardware virtualization In the past, nearly all Sony VAIO computers have had hardware virtualization technology (VT) disabled at the factory, the exception being the new BZ range, which uses an Aptio BIOS by American Megatrends, rather than the customizedPhoenix BIOS common on older models. However, on November 3, 2009, Sony released the following information on the vaio-link.com website: A number BIOS updates have been released which provide the option to enable VT in the BIOS. If a VT-enabling bios has been published for your VAIO model, you can find it in the Updates section. The released BIOS updates were provided for most of the VAIO range, and as expected, it will only list the "Enable VT" option in the BIOS if the CPU supports it. Wireless Hardware Switch WiFi and Bluetooth can be disabled by the user with either of two methods: the hardware switch and the software switch. If either one of these switches is turned off the WiFi will stay switched off. The hardware switch is located on the front or the keyboard hood or the side (depending on the model), and is labeled either "WLAN" or "WIRELESS". A green light usually accompanies the switch but is only lit when both the hardware switch and the software switch are on indicating

the WiFi NIC being in operation. The hardware switch controls both the bluetooth and WiFi power. The software switch is an icon usually located in the system tray, this program is called 'VAIO Smart Network' and always for wireless functions to be turned on and off individually. This program varies between older and newer models but is inherent in all OEM installations.

Sony is committed to ensuring that both the products and the marketing activities employed truly make a difference to peoples lifestyles and offer them new dimensions of enjoyment and an experiences which are like no other.

Sony's Story It was in 1946 that Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita together with a small team of passionate and committed group of employees started to build Tokyo Tsushin Kenkyujo (Totsuko) or Tokyo Telecommunications Research Institute into the billion dollar global conglomerate that it is today. The main objective of the company was to design and create innovative products which would benefit the people. From early attempts at creating products like the rice-cooker to the later success of creating Japans first magnetic recorder, the innovative company went on to create other hit products which won the company widespread recognition and international acclaim as a truly global company known for its quality and innovative products. Significant product milestones included Japans first transistor radio (1955), Trinitron colour television (1968), Walkman personal stereo (1979), Handycam video camera (1989), PlayStation (1994), Blu-ray Disc recorder (2003) and PlayStation 3 (2006). The company name of Sony was created by combining two words of sonus and sonny. The word sonus in Latin represents words like sonic sound. The other word sonny means little son. Used in combination, Sony is supposed to represent a very small group of young people who have the energy and passion towards unlimited creations and innovative ideas. With the far-sight of expanding worldwide, it was in 1958 that the company formally adopted Sony Corporation as its corporate name. Easy to pronounce and read in any language, the name Sony, which has a lively ring to it, fits comfortably with the spirit of freedom and openmindedness.

PRODUCTS

A Sony Vaio FJ series without webcam Sony is expanding the use of the VAIO label. It can now be found on notebooks, subnotebooks, desktop, media centres, and a hard-disk-based audio player that comes in both 20GB and 40GB variations (called VAIO POCKET player). Network media solutions by Sony will also carry the VAIO brand. VAIO notebooks are usually shipped with Microsoft Windows Vista Business (Business line) or Windows Vista Home Premium, with the highest end of the AR series spec being the exception, coming with Windows Vista Ultimate. In mid-2005, all models stopped shipping with a Recovery CD, which was replaced by a hidden partition on the hard drive, accessible at boot via the BIOS or also within Windows via a utility. The partition allows the user to either reimage his hard drive to factory state, or to create recovery media. VAIO users are prompted to create a set of recovery CDs or DVDs as part of the out-of-box experience, along with a prompt to register at My Club Vaio, an internet forum for VAIO users which also provides automatic driver updates and technical support via email, along with exclusive desktop wallpapers and promotional offers.

On recent models, you are also prompted to register your trial versions of Microsoft Office and the installed antivirus software (Norton Anti-Virus on older models, and McAfee Antivirus on newer ones) upon initial boot. VAIO computers come with components from companies such as Intel processors, Seagate Technology, Hitachi, Fujitsu or Toshiba hard drives, Infineon RAM, Atheros and Intel wireless chipsets, Sony (usually made by Hitachi) or Matsushita optical drives, Intel, NVIDIA or ATI graphics processors and Sony speakers. Recent laptops are being shipped with Qimonda RAM, HP speakers with Realtek High Definition Audio Systems, optional Dolby Sound Room technology. Technology The VAIO brand holds many unique technologies to its name. Some of these are:

Sony VAIO SZ Keyboard Some Sony VAIO models come with Sony's proprietary XBRITE (also named as ClearBright in Japan and Asia-Pacific region) displays. The first model that introduce this feature is the VAIO TR series. It is also the first consumer product to utilize such technology. This technology has been widely adopted by many other notebook manufacturers now. It was also the first to use a 16:9 aspect ratio screen with 1366x768 resolution. The SZ series was the first to use switchable graphics, integrated Intel and discrete Nvidia graphics. The former could be used for less power consumption and greater battery life whereas the latter would be used when greater graphics processing power was needed. A switch is used to toggle between the graphics but required a cold-boot. The Z series has recently replaced the SZ series but does not require a restart of the system to change graphic modes, it can be done on the fly. This feature has subsequently been used by other manufacturers, including Apple, Asus and Alienware. The high-end AR Series VAIOs were the first to incorporate a Blu-ray Disc burner. Blu-Ray/HDMI capable models have been the subject of intense promotion since mid-2007, selling with a variety of bundled Blu-Ray discs. WinDVD BD for VAIO, the Blu-Ray disc playing software for VAIO BD notebooks, running in Windows Vista Home Premium

Another recent addition to the VAIO series is the TZ model. This new design features a 64GB Solid State Drive (SSD) for rapid boot-ups, quicker application launches and greater durability. If selected, a 250GB Hard Drive may also be included in place of the built-in CD/DVD drive to provide room for additional storage. For security this model includes biometric fingerprint sensor and Trusted Platform Module. The TZ offers a Built-in highly miniaturized MOTION EYE camera built into the LCD panel for video conferencing. Additional features include the XBRITE LCD, integrated Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) technology and Bluetooth technology. A selection of media centers were added to the VAIO range in 2006. This range so far includes the XL and TP lines. The VGX-TP line is rather visually unique, featuring a circular, 'biscuit-tin' style design with most features obscured behind panels, rather than the traditional set-top box design. The VAIO line also features a series of desktop computers, which incorporate motherboard and widescreen LCD monitor into a single unit (in a manner similar to the more recent models of Apple's iMac series). These are identified by VGC in the product code. Bundled software Sony has been criticized for loading its VAIO laptops with bloatware, or software that supposedly allows the user to immediately use the laptop for multimedia

purposes. Sony forces users to install software such as AOL, Norton, SonicStage, Napster and Roxio, among countless "free trials" and intrusive advertisements. Dell had been accused of the same practice, but after strong customer feedback agreed to offer "limited" pre-installed software on its machines. The default webcam software in VAIO notebooks is ArcSoft WebCam Companion. It offers a set of special effects called Magic-i visual effects, through which users can enhance the images and videos taken through the webcam. It also features the face detection feature. Generally, the AC adapter port is located on one end of the cylindrical spine, and the power button on the other. Heat problems On September 4, 2008, Sony announced a worldwide voluntary product inspection and rework program for TZ-series notebook computers manufactured since June 2007. All model numbers beginning with VGNTZ1 and VGN-TZ2 were eligible, along with some VGN-TZ3 notebooks. The issue involves "a limited number of units" which could potentially "generate heat around the DC jack inlet and frame of LCD screen, which creates the potential of deformation of the plastic casing"[12]. TP Series- Mini PC

RM Series - HD Workstation HS Series - Home Server.

Nearly all Sony VAIO computers have hardware virtualization technology (VT) disabled, the exception being the new BZ range, which uses an Aptio BIOS by American Megatrends, rather than the customized Phoenix BIOS common on older models. The feature can be re-enabled by booting from a DOS disk and manually modifying the BIOS, but it is a relatively advanced and technical task. Released in late 2008, the HS series are a fully-featured DLNA Certified media server. It is similar to the TP series in looks, albeit slightly smaller. The main differences from the rest of the VAIO range are that, surprisingly, it runs a VAIOspecific version of Linux rather than the standard Microsoft Windows products, and that it has no video output of its own, so must be accessed via a client machine over a network.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Sony Vaio VPCEB1S1E/BJ Review this excellent the new sony Vaio VPCEB1S1E/BJ could be the initial laptop computer we have witnessed to work with Intel's brand-new central i3 cellular brand , therefore we could scarcely wait around in order to benchmark the idea. A good standard credit score involving seventy seven might not genuinely look significantly, however taking into consideration that it must be equivalent for the greatest notebook computer inside our existing '700 laptop computer type examination , we have been properly satisfied. A much bigger extraordinary , is the only two.13GHz central i3-330M may be the least expensive inside brand-new selection of cpus; a variety which usually similarly contains cellular central i5 and also central i7 poker chips together with starting clock rates of speed all-around only two.66GHz. All of the special poker chips are usually dual-core and possess Hyper-Threading to boost efficiency whilst multiple tasking. nEarly all cpus inside the variety likewise use Intel's overclocking Turbo increase technologies , that improves clock rates of speed should the chips is just not operating close to the optimum temperatures. Unfortunately , your entrylevel central i3 utilised in the new sony Vaio VPCEB1S1E/BJ notebook does not help this specific. Intel has gone after a new 32nm making process of the new processors , employing smaller transistor proportions , allowing your poker chips being more electrical power efficient , having a TDP involving only 35W. Apple in addition has integrated a new artwork brand about the chips , which usually eradicates your need for your dedicated artwork chips as well as reduces electrical power consumption. The new sony , although , has decided to utilize a committed artwork

chips in such cases as a substitute i your ATI flexibility Radeon hi-def 5470 i given that included chips is not actually strong enough pertaining to performing sophisticated three dimensional game titles. Provided this all, the electric battery credit score of three hrs fifteen moments would have been a small unsatisfying. On the other hand, the battery on it's own isn't large along with the committed artwork chipset negates almost any feasible advantages through the processor's on the machine GPU. We see this specific as an issue when using the VPCEB1S1E/BJ notebook, instead of central i3 computer systems normally. That reported , at exceeding three hrs , it's nevertheless adequate pertaining to occasional lightweight make use of. Sony's brand-new VPC string can be a gorgeous personal computer , having a understated two-tone structure. Your top along with the area previously mentioned internet connected computers computer keyboard really are a mild silver coloring , whilst on the style , internet connected computers computer keyboard solar panel and also wrist rest had been finished inside whitened. Your wrist rest alone includes a lustrous surface having a understated shimmer , which is manufactured of your excellent plastic-type material that is certainly cozy to operate on and also feels well created. This form of excellent conclude and also number of intriguing materials expands through the complete chassis , along with care about fine detail as i'd assume coming from a Vaio. For instance, the energy key carries a small directed indicator exactly where the idea complies with the sting from the circumstance , so it is nevertheless noticeable using the top close. The mostly worry was your dvd push plate , which can be flimsy and also loose whenever wide open ; a new position push might have been more inside standing up with all the remaining portion of the circumstance.

The dedicated ATI artwork minute card made it easier for your the new sony Vaio VPCEB1S1E/BJ notebook obtain nearly 20fps inside our cod several benchmark. This isn't rapid enough pertaining to gambling , however much less action-oriented video games , for instance dragon get older :beginning or even muscle size impact only two probably will run easily from reduce answers sufficient reason for a lot more superior artwork options deterred. High classification movie will never be a new issue , then there is an highdefinition multimedia interface port pertaining to supplying to a watching movies program. The inner audio system are usually fairly high in volume , nevertheless tinny from larger wavelengths as well as don't have largemouth bass , consequently for those who like to find the nearly all beyond movies you'd be suggested to connect a considerable audio system. The exhibit is also much less extraordinary as we would awaited. It has a lustrous surface that may echo expense illumination , and also vertical viewing aspects usually are tight. Colours are usually typical and also exciting , nevertheless not having directed backlighting, comparison isn't as great as a number of exhibits we now have discovered these days. Your backlight isn't as vivid as a number of, although it's typically even , together with just a few darker areas along the bottom edge. Sony used to include a great software program bundle including adobe cs4 photoshop components , however that is certainly lacking from this item. An individual nonetheless get yourself a wide range of the new sony power application , although the performance can be sketchy , therefore you obtain Sony's media center substitute , accessible with a committed key previously mentioned the laptop keyboard , which can be cunning nevertheless does not truly include any situation that Windows' individual media center are unable to offer. An additional

swap starts your Vaio attention aid application , to provide an individual together with admission to troubleshooting , back-up and also recovery tools. Sony VAIO S 13 (2012) Hands-on Like Apples Macbook Air, Sony doesnt change the name of its yearly laptop refreshes. So the new VAIO Series S is just the VAIO S, much like last years Sony VAIO S. However, considering 2011s model did fairly well, we were excited to see what the new VAIO Series S had in store.

The VAIO S is a premium ultraportable not an Ultrabook, that niche is filled by the completely new VAIO T13 and T11. Slotting in just below the VAIO Z, the S is basically the second-best in Sonys entire line-up, with many drool-worthy features such as an attractive all-metal chassis, dedicated graphics, optional highresolution IPS screens, optional Blu-ray drive, keyboard backlighting, and generous connectivity. Its available in two sizes: the 13in S13, and a 15in S15. Were checking out the former to see how it holds up against its Ultrabook and other ultraportable competition.

Where design is concerned, theres been a subtle change for the better. This all aluminium VAIO is now a little less edgy, with a more smooth and cohesive feel, but without loosing any of its executive slim appeal. Available in black or white brushed metal, both versions of the S13 look pretty good and match the colour choices of other popular products like the Samsung Galaxy S3.

As before, build quality is very good and the laptops bottom half is solid as a brick, though as with most of Sonys ultra-slim models, the lid is perhaps a little too flexible. The VAIO S 13in is slightly thicker than the VAIO T13 thanks to the included optical drive, but this is a sacrifice were happy enough to make considering the added flexibility. Not only has Sony gone for a slot-loading model

to maintain the S13s slim designer lines, but you can even opt for a Blu -ray drive, making this one of the few ultraportables that let you get your HD-disc fix on the go.

Connectivity is also far better than your average ultraportable, with twin memory card readers for SD and HG Duo, VGA and HDMI for video, twin USB 3.0 ports plus a single always-on USB 2.0 port, and a Gigabit Ethernet jack all found on the laptops left edge. Other niceties include Wi-Fi N and Bluetooth 4, a physical power mode switch, HD webcam, and fingerprint reader for those who hate remembering passwords.

Getting to usability, the VAIO S sports one of the nicer chiclet keyboards weve

come across in a while. Not only are the matt keys large and well-spaced, but theres far more travel than on the VAIO T13 and the keyboard is fully backlit in white. The huge trackpad too felt more pleasant to use, with none of the issues we encountered on the T Series.

We didnt get word on an IPS screen option for the 13in VAIO S so far that seems to be reserved for the 15in model with its lovely 1080p IPS display but at least the TN panel we saw in the S13 was a decent, high-resolution affair. Packing the same 1,600 x 900 pixels as the Samsung Series 9 900X3B if not the same quality, viewing angles appeared to be quite good with only the extreme sides or a top view instantly betraying its TN nature. The semi-glossy finish, which incidentally is also scratch resistant, helped to give colours that little bit of extra spark.

Specs are of course fully configurable, with a choice of Intel processors, up to 8GB of RAM, and a choice of SSD, hybrid or pure HDD storage up to 1TB. In other words, whether you want just a capable setup or the most power you can stuff into its 13in chassis, the VAIO S13 provides a flexible solution. The single most interesting element to the spec sheet though is the inclusion of Nvidia GeForce dedicated graphics, specifically a GT 640M LE. Unlike the 620M which is actually based on previous-generation Fermi Nvidia architecture, the 640M is proper Keppler, and should allow for some serious gaming by ultraportable standards. Yet despite all this extra goodness, the Series S still weighs just a gram less than the VAIO T13 at 1.59kg.

Throw in an optional battery slice and docking station, and the VAIO S 13in is

looking like one of the most flexible ultraportable laptops around for business users and power-hungry consumers, not to mention gamers if you can afford it. Well be bringing you the full review soon.

SONY VAIO C SERIES (15.5-INCH) REVIEW

Take a look at your average laptop with a 15-inch display and youll be looking at a laptop thats not particularly well equipped. Oh, sure, it may have a quick processor, but the finer details are often elusive. Low-resolution displays and so-so keyboards are common. Thats a shame, because features such as these make the difference between a decent laptop and a great one. Spending a little more for a laptop that nails the details is often worthwhile. Yet the recent economic downturn has kept purse-strings tight, leaving laptops with high prices and premium features out in the cold. Laptops such as this Sony Vaio C, a 15.5-inch model that starts at a relatively high $729. When loaded with the goodies found on our review unit, such as a Core i5 processor, 640GB hard drive and a 1080p display, the price is $1049. These extras are impressive, but many consumers have trouble spending so much for any laptop without an Apple logo on its lid. Is this Sony worth its impressive price? Lets find out. Beautiful and robust Taking in this laptop at-a-glance is difficult. Given just a moments attention, it appears rather conventional. Our review units dark purple color is intriguing, but not instantly exciting, as in some lighting it appears black. On closer inspection, however, the laptop comes to life. Both the lid and the interior palmrest are finished with an unusual double coating. A patterned texture is visible, but a layer of gloss is paved ove r it, creating a sense of depth. Its different, elegant, and beautiful.

The beauty turns out to be skindeep. While much of the chassis is solid, there is noticeable flex on bottom, directly beneath the location of the optical drive. Holding the laptop at any particular edge can induce a creaking noise as various plastics bend and strain under the laptops own weight. That is not to say its flimsy, but there are less expensive laptops that better resist flex. Other elements of the design deserve praise. Display movement during use, which was a problem on the previous reviewed Sony S series, isnt an issue here. Even the most aggressive typists will find that their fingers of fury dont induce wobble. The lid is similarly robust, as it allows minimal flex when objects are placed on top. Connectivity is readily available. Along the left flank of the laptop lurk one USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 port as well as VGA and HDMI for video out. Examine the right and two more USB 2.0 ports will be revealed along with headphone and mic jacks. Both an SD Card slot and a Memory Stick Duo slot inhabit the front. The backlit keys Given the large size of this laptop, theres plenty of room to fit a full keyboard with a numpad, and the layout seizes the opportunity to stretch its legs. Some sacrifices are made in the name of squeezing in a numpad (for example, the left Tab, Shift and Caps Lock keys are a bit small) but most users will be comfortably acquainted with this keyboard in minutes.

Key feel is also robust. Some additional travel would be nice, as the keys seem to bottom out quickly, but they spring back instantly. Flex is minimal and wont be induced by normal typing.

Backlighting is standard, and works well. All keys are evenly lit and are bright enough to be usable, but not so bright as to become blinding in a pitchblack room. There is no

adjustment available, however, nor did we find a way to turn the backlight off. Instead, it works automatically, turning itself off fifteen seconds after the user stops typing. The touchpad is less deserving of praise. It is small relative to the laptops size, and also lacking in texture. While there are two individual touchpad buttons, their travel is short and they have a squishy feel. Sony may believe that most consumers who buy this laptop will use it with a mouse instead, and theyre likely correct, but thats no excuse for poor touchpad execution. Flaunting pixels Turn on this laptops display and youll be greeted by a big surprise full 1080p resolution! Although found frequently on gaming laptops, multimedia laptops of this size virtually never offer 1080p as an option. Its availability here (in lieu of the standard 1366768 panel) is made all the sweeter by an upgrade cost of just $50. Thats a steal, but do be sure to check your eyesight before purchasing, as text is quite small.

Pixel count aside, the high-gloss display is better than average. Black levels are slightly better than normal, and this difference was most apparent in dark images, which appeared rich and detailed. Contrast and white saturation revealed test images also

satisfactory

performance. Only the gradient test showed some unpleasant results in the form of banding in the darkest corner. However, there was no real-world scenario in which this test result impacted image quality. Only digital artists and photographers should be concerned. Audio quality is adequate. The two speakers located beside the display hinges are clear, but notably lacking in bass. As volumes increase, this lack results in distortion as the speakers attempt to reproduce sounds that are beyond their range. While perfectly fine for listening to music while on the go, users who plan to keep this laptop near a desk will want to purchase a nice pair of desktop speakers. Heavyweight class Picking up the Sony Vaio C 15.5-inch reveals a lot about its portability, or lack thereof. It was immediately apparent upon lifting the laptop from its box that theres some junk in this trunk. Rear thickness measures an intimidating 1.5 inches, while the front is just a hair thinner than 1.25 inches. All of this bulk results in a weight of about 6.3 pounds with the battery installed. While there are some thicker and heavier laptops, this laptop is towards the heavier end of the range for models of similar size. Stuffing it into a laptop bag isnt easy

unless the bag was built to accommodate 17-inch models, and once youve crammed it in, your shoulders will be constantly reminded of its existence. At the rear theres a reasonably sized 5,300 mAh battery, which is standard. An optional 7,950 mAh battery is available for $60, which isnt a bad price, but I doubt most users will need to spring for it. Even the smaller unit provided an hour and a half of endurance in Battery Eater, which was stretched to six hours and eighteen minutes in the more realistic Readers Test. These results are enough to handle most cross-country flights, but given the size of this laptop, its not the ideal companion for such trips. Served warm Despite a large chassis, which should in theory provide reasonable room for heat dissipation, this laptop proved toasty even during light usage. No specific spot stuck out as a source of the heat, but the entire bottom of the laptop became uncomfortably warm after as little as a half-hour of use. This extended to the keyboard, resulting in sweaty-palm syndrome, which is every bit as uncomfortable as it sounds. Stress testing only aggravated the situation. When pressed in this way the area of the keyboard nearest the exhaust port on the laptops left felt warmest, but the entire laptop, both top and bottom, was hot enough to make using it an unpleasant

experience. All of this heat is balanced by a system fan, which is quiet. At idle its difficult to pick up over a rooms typical ambient noise. Placing load on the hardware forces the fan to spin up, but it never reaches hair-dryer levels of racket, instead pacing

itself. While itd be preferable if the fan could achieve this while keeping temperatures low, a dull system fan is always better than one that seems happy to impersonate a hurricane. Redundant software Like every Sony tested recently, this laptop comes with a strange little dock which lingers at the top of the display and acts as application launcher. The inclusion of it is a mystery, as it is redundant with the Windows taskbar and with icons already on the desktop. Worse, the dock has a nasty habit of appearing whenever the user attempts to click on a full-screen windows title bar, which is annoying. Dispatching the dock can be accomplished with a mouse-click, however, and permanent removal is also easy. Otherwise, the only potentially annoying bloatware is Norton Internet Security, which uses the typical pop-up scare tactics to lure users into purchasing the companys product. Jack of all trades At the heart of the base Sony Vaio C 15.5-inch youll find a Core i3 processor, but our review unit came equipped with an upgrade to the Core i5-2410M, which will set consumers back $60. Also found on our review unit is a Radeon 6630M mobile GPU, a $100 upgrade which promises to improve performance over the standard Intel IGP. Firing up SiSoft Sandras Processor Arithmetic benchmark proved tha t this laptop means business, as it returned a score of 38 GOPS, which is almost identical to the score returned by the smaller but similarly equipped Sony Vaio S Series laptop we previously reviewed. The Vaio C Series also returned an impressive score of 2,159 in PCMark 7, which is one of the highest results weve seen from a laptop not dedicated to gaming.

Thats not to say gamers are left out. The Radeon graphics led the charge to a 3DMark 06 score of 6,650 and a 3DMark 11 score of 983. While these results are well short of a true gaming rig, they indicate that this laptop is capable of playing most 3D games at low to medium detail settings. As robust as these scores are, theyre blunted by the $1049 price tag. Quad -core laptops are readily available from other manufactures at this price, and gamers would be far better off purchasing a true gaming laptop for just a few hundred more. Still, this Sony can handle a bit of everything, which is expected of a multimedia laptop. Conclusion Sony has once again proved that Windows is not synonymous with boring. This laptop is visually appealing and, better yet, it doesnt require that buyers sacrifice their left arm for the sake of looks. While the signature collection is extra, there are four color choices Bolt Black, Thunder Blue, Neon Green and Lightening White available at no extra charge. Equally attractive is this laptops display, which offers a wealth of pixels and solid quality relative to most competitors. Features like a standard backlit keyboard and an available Blu-ray drive are only icing on the cake. These benefits start to erode, however, when bang-for-your-buck is considered. While the $50 full HD display is a bargain, the base asking price of $729 is a bit high for a laptop that comes stock with a Core i3. The real problem, however, is

death by a thousand pin-pricks. Bulk is an issue from the start, heat buildup is worse than it should be, and audio quality is only so-so. None of these issues are fatal, but theyre all annoying, and drag down an otherwise excellent computer. Were left with a product thats hard to flatly recommend or not recommend. Anyone looking for a stylish design, well-rounded performance, or a 1080p display will be attracted, but those who want portability and comfortable use under load will be repelled.
