Must be a citizen of the United States. Must be a resident of North Carolina (at time of application. Must be at least 18 years old. (Anyone under 18 must have written parental consent) Prior military service is desirable, but not a prerequisite for enlistment. Prior military service must have an Honorable Discharge. Prior service applicants may be enlisted in the next highest grade attained during military service. Applicants must be of sound mind and free of mental or emotional disorders. Convicted felons are ineligible to join. Background checks are performed on all applicants. There is no set period of enlistment. US Army Class A, B, C Dress Green, or ACU/BDU camouflage are authorized uniforms. Distinctive pocket patches, NC State Guard nametapes are worn. All personnel of the NCSGA are required to furnish their own uniforms. NCSGA personnel are required to attend monthly drill sessions and Annual Training. Mecklenberg Co., NC Ice Storm Teams clear debris for area police. Allison Woods Foundation, NC Security & traffic control for historical reenactments. Shelby, NC Security & traffic control for parades and events. Waxhaw, NC Security & traffic control for parades and events. Charlotte, NC American Legion Convention. Lake Norman, NC Operation Clean Sweep.
NC Division
Disaster/Emergency Response: In the event of a natural, or man-made disaster. North Carolina State Guard Association personnel are available at any hour of the day, or night. Who may request assistance from the NCSGA? Any legitimate branch of city, county or state government in the state of North Carolina, including Police, or Sheriffs Departments. Fire Departments, Mayor/County Executives, and SEMA and Disaster Management officials. Approval of the Division Commander in Charlotte is necessary to place personnel on duty, but in extreme emergencies this can be expedited. Unless officially mobilized by the State Emergency Management office, or the Governor of North Carolina, all personnel that respond to emergency situations are doing so as unpaid VOLUNTEERS. The North Carolina State Guard Association trains and stands ready to serve the citizens of North Carolina.
Primary Mission:
North Carolina State Guard Association function is to provide an adequately trained force capable of providing assistance as manpower multipliers to local and state government organizations. Training in Fire, Police and MEDIC functions to the extent that the State Guard could give relief to the men and women of the professional (paid or volunteer) departments. In time of emergency our men and women are cross-trained in many areas of emergency assistance and will assist as backup for any local, state or federal agency.
Other Functions:
Provide assistance to the National Guard, upon request from the Governor Provide Family Assistance to families of military personnel Assist in the evacuation of civilian population in the event of an emergency Other duties as directed by the Governor
Training is held in the following areas: Military discipline and courtesy Hazardous material and chemical spills Traffic Control Security and Guard Duty Map Reading Land Navigation and compass courses Cold and Hot weather survival Family Assistance Mass Care Community First Aid Terror awareness Search & Rescue
