Steam Desuperheater with mechanical water atomization and integrated spraywater control

z z z z
Injection nozzle with variable geometry High rangeability, 40:1 (water) and high steam cooling efficiency Combined control valve and injection nozzle in one unit Tight shut-off

High reliability and resistance against wear only one moving part the stem and control plug. Hard-faced control plug and injection nozzle with inner parts of high quality alloy steel. Simple installation in vertical, horizontal or sloping pipes min size, DN 150 mm/6".

General
The BTG Steam Desuperheater DA-4 is a combination of an injection nozzle and a control valve. It is inserted in a steam line of min DN 150 mm/6" (see tables 1 and 2 for dimensions). The nozzle is inserted in the steam pipe through a flanged pipe stud that is welded to the steam pipe.

Operating Principle fig. 2

The cooling water from the water pipe enters the area between the front part of the inlet pipe and the injection nozzle. The control plug is guided in the injection nozzle. The injection nozzle and the sealing surfaces of the control plug are lapped together to ensure drop tight shut-off. When the plug is in the closed position all water admission holes in the injection cage will also be closed. As the plug lifts from the injection nozzle seat, it simultaneously opens up a number of water admission holes in the injection cage. The number of free ports will therefore be directly related to the lift of the plug. The inlet or admission holes in the injection cage are arranged so that a, from the control point of view, good characteristic is obtained see fig. 3. The cooling water, that enters the injection cage through the tangentially positioned admission holes, is induced to a fast rotation around the tip of the plug and is subsequently ejected through the nozzle as a cone shaped mist, that rapidly evaporates. The quantity of injected cooling water depends on the number and size of the ports that are opened up by the control plug. The signal from the temperature transmitter located downstream the desuperheater controls the position of the plug via the actuator. Turn down ratio

Selection of nozzle size fig. 4

To select a nozzle size suitable for your system, start by calculating: the maximum cooling water flow Q in kg/min or lbs/ min that is required, and convert this value to m/h or cuft/h. the lowest available pressure difference between the steam pressure in the pipe and the cooling water pressure.

a) Water flow The minimum water flow for proper control function is 1/40 of the maximum flow that the selected nozzle will give at a specific pressure drop. b) Steam flow Calculate the turn down ratio of the installation as follows: calculate the steam velocity in the pipe at full load. See fig. 5 for min. permitted velocity in the pipe. Divide the max. calculated steam velocity with this value. Also check the steam velocity at min. steam flow. If the min. steam flow gives you a lower velocity than permitted fig. 5 a liner must be fitted in the pipe line or the pipe diameter has to be decreased. The liner IRP consists of an outer and an inner piping, the size of which is determined by the smallest steam flow required for an efficient steam cooling over a wide flow range. The IRP is delivered complete with the mounting stud for the desuperheater.

Then select the nozzle size fig. 4 which capacity curve is situated above the intersection of the corresponding cooling water flow and p water/steam. The pressure difference, water/steam should not be less than 3 bar/45 psi to ensure good atomization of the water, and not exceed 60 bar/870 psi to prevent erosion of the nozzle. 10 bar is a good average differential pressure.
