History The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) was established in 1983. It is one of the four core institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy. CIPE was founded on the idea that economic freedom and political freedom are intertwined and that progress and development comes through a combination of political and economic liberalization. Mission The CIPEs primary purpose is to strengthen democracy around the globe through private enterprise and market oriented reform. Principles The CIPE works to establish and sustain market-oriented democracies, increase private sector participation, improve governance through transparency and accountability, promote an entrepreneurial culture, and expand access to information necessary for sound entrepreneurial and policy decisions. Leadership The CIPEs Board of Directors consists of 21 members. They also have an Executive, Audit and Communications committee. Partners Throughout 2010, CIPE worked across the globe to support democratic reform and developing market economies. With 122 partners in 52 countries, CIPE has partnered with national organizations and private enterprises in Africa, Asia, Southeast Europe & the Caucasus, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, and South Asia. Key Program Areas CIPE focuses on the root causes of the key problems that countries face and works to remedy the underlying causes. Their areas of expertise include Democratic and Corporate Governance, Business Association Development, Combating Corruption, Legal and Regulatory Reform, Access to Information, Women and Youth, and Informal Sector and Property Rights.

What is the CIPE? The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) is one of the four core institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy. What does the CIPE do? CIPE strengthens democracy around the globe through private enterprise and market-oriented reform. For 25 years, CIPE has worked with business leaders, policymakers, and journalists to build the civic institutions vital to a democratic society. What countries does the CIPE work with? With 122 partners in 52 countries, CIPE works alongside national organizations and private enterprises in Africa, Asia, Southeast Europe & the Caucasus, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, and South Asia. What are the CIPESs key program areas? CIPEs key program areas include anti-corruption, advocacy, business associations, corporate governance, democratic governance, access to information, the informal sector and property rights, and women and youth. How are the CIPEs programs supported? CIPE programs are supported by the National Endowment for Democracy, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the U.S. Embassy in Iraq Office for Private Sector Development, and the Middle East Partnership Initiative. Who runs the CIPE? The CIPEs Board of Directors consists of 21 members. They also have an Executive, Audit and Communications committee. The current President is Thomas J. Donohue. How does an organization apply for a grant? To apply for a CIPE grant, organizations must first submit a brief concept paper explaining the proposed project for CIPE to review. If concept paper is approved, organizations then complete a Grant Application Form and Business Organization Information Form along with the full formal proposal. The review process for proposals may require up to six months. CIPEs Executive Committee evaluates all proposals and the ones approved are presented to the National Endowment for Democracy for final approval.
