Using VMware with EMC RecoverPoint to Support Development at your DR Site

Russ Hamker VMware Administrator Speedy Cash Holdings Corp.

Data Duplication
Development requires 5x the storage vs. Production Data In Speedy Cashs scenario we were using 5x+ storage for
Development

EMC offers Snapshot Technology to create virtual

development environments with less storage

EMC SANs and RecoverPoint

Speedy Cash uses EMC VNX and CX4 SANs Speedy Cash uses EMC RecoverPoint/VMware SRM for
Disaster Recovery
RecoverPoint Provides continuous data protection with multiple
recovery points to restore applications instantly to a specific point in time. VMware SRM (Site Recovery Manager) offers disaster recovery for Virtual Machines.

Development at DR
Using Industry Leading Tools Speedy Cash is able to Cut
Storage Costs and alleviate Production Storage I/O to do DR Development with SQL Server Data Tools Include: EMC RecoverPoint EMC Replication Manager EMC NaviSecCLI EMC SAN SnapView EMC SAN CloneView VMware PowerCLI Windows PowerShell

Process
1. RecoverPoint/Replication Manager Creates Parallel Bookmark of all
Production LUNs

2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

RecoverPoint Updates primary DR storage RecoverPoint Updates clone of DR storage (for I/O segmentation from DR SRM) VMware PowerCLI Presents clone storage to vCenter VMware PowerCLI Mounts clone storage to Existing SQL Server SQL PowerShell Mounts DBs and runs PCI DB scrub to prepare for development work

7. SQL PowerShell Dismounts DBs 8. EMC NaviSecCLI Creates SAN snapshots of DB clone LUNs and adds
snapshots to VMware host storage group

9. VMware PowerCLI Presents snapshot LUNs to vCenter and mounts

snapshot LUNs to existing development SQL server

10.Steps 7 9 are repeated for as many development SQL servers as are

needed

Conclusion
Using the tools provided by EMC allows Speedy Cash to
save $$ and I/O Benefits Include: Cutting Storage Costs Removes I/O from the Production Environment Segments Development from the Production Environment Allows IT to spin up as many Development SQL VMs as are necessary Allows IT to use DR on a daily basis for Development Allows IT to receive extra ROI for DR
