Materials Needed

Lesson Development 1 Work on warm-ups out of Standard of Excellence method book 2 Initial run through of Regal March - record their performance 3 Play recording back and ask students what they noticed/how they feel about their work 4 Class discussion: What can we do to improve our performance? Does anyone know what a march is? Does anyone know what regal means? - Discuss this topic until students understand the background meaning of this piece and how that should be incorporated in their playing. 5 Play through piece again and incorporate these new concepts slowly. (Keep steady tempo, light marching feel throughout, keep march feel even when playing piano, mood should be proud and royal) 5 Record students performing Regal March once they have incorporated all of their new ideas. 6 Listen back and discuss the differences in the playing. Lead into discussion of why it is so important to know the meaning behind a piece before performing it.

Assessments -Check student performance section by section -Evaluate student responses after they listen to their recordings. Note if they hear musical concepts that we have discussed in class. -Understanding why they perform differently by the end of class Self-Evaluation -Noting how the students perform as a group, large and small. -Check students responses to their recordings
