BUDGET BUZZ
John Jeffries Laidlaw Interiors Group Whilst the budget statement pledges to invest more in the building of schools and hospitals, which we see as a key area for growth, this is realistically some three years away from happening. To help improve infrastructure, we really need to see investment in projects that can help make a difference today greater investment in those more short term projects will help to kick-start a flagging industry. Tim Pollard Plumb Center Were pleased people are getting support with mortgages and deposits for new homes and we hope that, by combining the new budget announcements with the retrofit work being undertaken on ageing housing stock via the Green Deal, it will make the UK one of the worlds leading energy efficient countries. Simon Rubinsohn RICS The Government has largely failed to realise that infrastructure projects dont need to be big to be effective in creating growth. In fact small might very well be beautiful. Ian Fletcher British Property Federation "This is a strong package of help for housing. Annual transactions are half what they were and that has knock-on consequences for all those parts of the economy that rely on people moving. Helping people needing a deposit has for some time been cited as the missing piece of a coherent housing policy and both are therefore welcome." Colin Wilson DLA Piper The Government is definitely moving in the right direction by voicing its support for the nuclear and carbon capture and storage projects. The deliverability of wider infrastructure projects in transport and social infrastructure would be boosted by similar additional support being offered by Government and it following through on those commitments." Jon Poore Turner & Townsend Public sector infrastructure spending should not be an indiscriminate spraying of investment around the country. Without focus and carefully costed plans, the chancellor might as well send a fleet of RAF helicopters to drop bundles of banknotes. Leonie Greene Solar Trade Association Renewable technologies like solar need bold leadership and a positive vision if we're to compete successfully in the global race the prime minister keeps highlighting. Were on a path to nowhere if his chancellor continues to ignore climate change, the economic potential of the green economy, and the dangerous upward trajectory of fossil fuel prices.

Liverpudlian innovation
Ryder Architecture's four-storey, 7m Innovation Centre 3 at Liverpool Science Park started on site on 18 March 2013. The 3,750m2 flexible office and commercial laboratory accommodation builds on the success of the two previous science park innovation centres and completes the Metropolitan Cathedral campus, terminating the vista from the urban parkland to the south and creating a focus for the science park community. Innovation Centre 3 (ic3), which merges with Innovation Centre 1 (ic1) at the upper two levels to maximise the efficiency of internal circulation, will provide adaptable office suites in a range of sizes and fully serviced laboratories with communal support facilities. Ryder Architecture's simple and elegant design is based on two contrasting but complementary elements a sharp edged rectilinear block that cantilevers out to face the main paths through the campus and a flowing organic form that snakes across to form the link with ic1. The cantilever box will be solidly clad in dark grey linear rainscreen panels, while a contrasting mix of clear and translucent/ frosted Reglit panels will clothe the curvature and fluidity of the organic form.

SYMPOSIUM
Ecobuild 2013: What next?
With this years Ecobuild event taking place last month, it is an ideal time to assess the impacts (both certain and potential) that the built environment sustainability exhibition may, or will, have. Has the three-day event pushed us further in the right direction? Can we now feel more optimistic about the collective path were taking? A number of topics were discussed and debated by leading figures in the field, but two of the major ones were the Governments Green Deal initiative, and the zero carbon homes policy. The first of the Ecobuild conferences was dedicated to the Green Deal an innovative loan-scheme that enables house owners to undertake energy efficiency improvements at no upfront cost. Speaking at the session was energy and climate change secretary Ed Davey, who used the opportunity to address a number of concerns that have arisen in recent times. So what do Daveys attempted alleviations mean for the scheme and the industry going forward? One of the primary concerns is that take-up of the initiative is too low. In response to this, Davey stated that legal reasons prevented him from disclosing exact figures, which simply added fuel to the rumours. However, since then, official figures have been released, showing that more than 1,800 assessments were lodged in the first month far more than most expected. Another topic that was hotly discussed throughout the event was the zero carbon homes policy and, in particular, what can be expected in terms of Part L of the Building Regulations. It has been widely recognised across the construction industry that uncertainty surrounding this topic is a major issue. Without clarity in terms of regulation, progress will continue to be hindered. The second day of the event saw communities minister Don Foster provide a highly anticipated update on these Building Regulations and, in particular, the upping of efficiency standards. Though no finalised actions were announced, Foster did confirm that a statement on Part L of the Building Regulations will be delivered in the spring. When this happens, the construction industry will get their much needed clarity and the path to zero carbon can continue. Though Ecobuild is the worlds largest event on sustainability in the built environment, it was not limited to just this. There were a number of seminars dedicated to wider sustainability subjects, including the controversial topics of fracking and nuclear power, providing a valuable insight into these areas. How successful the exhibition was in terms of moving us further in the right direction is something that cannot be answered simply. A lot more time is needed for the outcomes to have an effect, but I for one, am certainly optimistic. ith the construction sector in survival mode, funding and grants to help train and develop the skills of you and your staff could be a lifeline for any business. Work may be scarce for some construction companies at the moment, but ensuring staff are equipped with the right skills that are up-to-date with health and safety requirements is essential for maintaining safety on site as well as avoiding any on the spot fines. The Health and Safety Executive announced plans to clamp down on any construction sites not meeting regulations with plans to target 3,000 construction sites as part of its annual inspection drive. Health and Safety inspectors can implement immediate fines during site visits if they believe health and safety procedures are not being followed. This can amount to thousands and even tens of thousands of pounds. There's also the hope that more work will come through since the Government promised funding to assist in the build of 120,000 new homes, an annual infrastructure investment of 33bn and 1bn towards the build of 100 free schools and academies. If we're to get Britain building again and support new construction projects then construction companies needs to continue to sustain skills so they can compete for new contracts and deliver high quality products. There are millions of pounds of funding and grants for training to help companies develop their workforce and to keep their sites safe, but few are aware of the money or know how to go about accessing it. Apprenticeships Hiring an apprentice can be an attractive prospect as employers can qualify for an apprenticeship grant through the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) via an accredited training provider, as long as the apprentice is guaranteed a full time job at the end of the course. Apprentices earn while they learn on the job. The courses are three to 12 months after which they're fully qualified to work on a construction site doing certain jobs such as a groundsman or a plant operator. Up-skill or retrain But it's not just new starters that get financial help with their career. If you want to up-skill your workforce and ensure that they have the highest levels of health and safety awareness,
then one of the best ways is through the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS), which is a colour coded card scheme. The colour of your card depends on your level of skills and health and safety knowledge. To get a Red Trainer Operator card, which will allow you on site, you have to pass a CPCS test first. To upgrade from a Red to a Blue Experienced Worker CPCS card, which is awarded to people that have the highest level of skill and knowledge, then staff need to complete a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) course like a Level 2 Plant Operations NVQ assessment. Once a worker has passed a CPCS Test to get a Red card then they can apply for a CSkills CPCS Grant to go towards an NVQ course, as long as their employer is registered with the national construction training body, CSkills, as a Levy Payer which is a tax against earnings used towards training grants. These grants range from 250, 300 and 470 per plant, depending on the size of the plant and you can apply for them through CSkills or a training provider. But there is a limit of up to two passed tests a year. Any levy paying employer can also apply for 610 per person once a worker has successfully completed a Level 2 NVQ course for a blue card. Your training provider can also get more money off, on top of these grants so it's worth asking. It's also wise to check that staff have completed and passed Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) Tests before undertaking further CPCS training. Companies try and leave these tests until the last minute as they dont want to take the team off site. This can be a costly error because, if the candidate then fails the CSCS test the they cant go on to sit the CPCS test. If you're using a training company that's flexible enough to undertake these tests at your site, completing these two test separately shouldn't be as much of an issue. Restrictions To apply for grants, the individual worker has to reside in England and the employer has to have less than 250 staff. Anyone under 24 can get more money off. But, no matter your age, if a staff member has already passed more than one Level 2 NVQ course or they are already qualified in a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 NVQ then they won't be able to claim. People forget previous qualifications or believe that they don't count if they did them years ago, but they do. It helps to ensure that your training provider does an eligibility check before applying. If the individual passes the eligibility test and all their forms are completed correctly then it's extremely likely that funding will be granted.

12 Building Study
Gibraltar Airport
A unique and complex location The new terminal is the first building visitors will see when they enter Gibraltar by air, road or on foot and is located immediately at the frontier, with the Rock as a backdrop. Sited within an extraordinary and spectacular landscape, it is bound by very tight constraints on all sides, with the frontier with Spain to the north, the existing airport runway to the south, Winston Churchill Avenue to the west and tapering land with RAF restrictions to the east. The building is two-storeys high and covers 19,600m2. A refined and elegant design solution With over 20 years experience in aviation, the design team approached this commission with consideration and empathy, and created an Hufton & Crow important public space both around and inside the terminal. A large, over-sailing roof, providing shade and shelter to the fully glazed walls which maximise views to the Rock and across the straits toward Afric, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, reflects the terminal's aviation function and maritime location. The forecourt creates a new, landscaped park providing a generous welcome to Gibraltar and the airport and an identifiable place' at the frontier, a place to meet and greet whether on a local or extended journey. There are double height spaces within the terminal and an extensive airside roof terrace, designed as an extension to the departures lounge. The terminal, which operates over two levels with an area of 19,600m2, has a primary check-in and arrivals concourse at ground floor on the west side of the terminal. The terminal was also designed to accommodate entry and exit of passengers directly at the frontier. Key design attributes It takes advantage of fantastic views over the airfield towards the rock The dramatic roof overhang and solar shading create a building which is architecturally significant and environmentally sensitive The use of glazing achieves transparency between the interior and exterior, allows the terminal to be predominantly naturally lit and provides extensive views out of the terminal. The fifth elevation (roof) is very important as it is seen from the rock the roof lights are laid out to visually guide passengers through some of the more internal routes and generate subtle animation of the space thoughout the day, from throwing disks of diffused sunlight onto the floor, to capturing the blue glow in the early evening.
Energy efficient Energy efficiency has been a key consideration. The design incorporates a large roof overhang to provide a high level of solar shading which maintains a cool environment. High performance double glazing and automated roller blinds contribute to enhanced energy performance. Certain features of the design result from the building's proximity to the sea. In addition to the need for close attention to detailing and specifications for external elements due to the corrosive marine environment, there was also concern about maintaining the appearance of the glazing, not just from salt-saturated air but also wind-borne sand and dust particles. The design solution includes a special external cleansing system that intermittently rinses the faades to eliminate accumulated material. The de-ionised water used in the system further improves the effectiveness of the rinsing process. Buro Happold's Fire Engineering developed a holistic fire safety design that integrates a combination of passive and active fire safety measures, along with management measures which combine to give a simple but robust fire strategy for the building. This provides several benefits: Life safety protection to the large numbers of passengers and staff using the terminal; containing fire and smoke to limited areas and reducing operational disruption in the event of an incident. Team definition and roles Daniel Brub and Matthew Bedward led the 3DReid design team from concept to planning scheme design, until they left to form bblur architecture in 2008. 3DReid and bblur architecture agreed to collaborate throughout the design development and delivery phases of the project with Daniel Brub leading the project as concept guardian and lead designer working with 3DReid and the contractor to deliver the terminal and associated infrastructure. This was to ensure that Dragados S.A., the Spanish contractor who was awarded the design-build contract of the terminal and associated infrastructure works, remained faithful to the original design intent. During the course of the project delivery, bblur architecture was also commissioned to design the interior of the terminal, and to redesign the terminal forecourt and adjacent public realm with Spacehub. In addition to the main terminal building, 3DReid and bblur architecture have designed the Park & Ride facility, a six level multi-storey carpark, on the opposite side of the runway.

Product Focus
any developers understandably focus on the front door and windows when considering security. While these are undeniably crucial, it is important not to overlook the access which can be gained through the garage door. It is not only the goods within a garage which are put at risk through a lack of security. A poorly-designed or securitydeficient garage door could also provide criminals with easy access to a property. Finding the right garage door is therefore of upmost importance when securing any property against theft. In a recent survey of home owners with garage doors, 35% of respondents indicated that they use their garage as an extra living space of some kind, while nearly 50% of respondents have up to 3,000 worth of goods stored in their garage. This alone gives a good indication as to the level of security a home-owner should expect from their garage door. With around 40% of those surveyed saying that they had been the victim of a crime at some point in their lives, garage security should be a top priority when it comes to any domestic development. The UK police initiative Secured by Design (SBD) is dedicated to designing out crime in homes across the UK. Jon Cole from Secured by Design commented: Secured by Design focuses on crime prevention of homes and commercial premises, and promotes the use of security standards for a wide range of applications and products. Membership in the UK currently includes over 400 companies and Garador is proud to be the first up and over garage door manufacturer to be included in the scheme.
Garadors Guardian Range of doors have undergone rigorous tests to assure that they will stand up to the test that criminals may adopt in their attempts to break into a garage. We have always been proud of the strength and quality of our doors, but to now be able to provide a door recognised with the Secured by Design accreditation is fantastic but this accomplishment has not been achieved overnight. We have made a number of intricate adaptations to our product, to ensure that these doors meet the very strict SBD criteria and are as secure as possible. Of course security is not the only consideration when it comes to selecting the right garage door, and Simon is keen to cater for developers who are looking to improve a propertys curb-side appeal, without compromising on security. With more and more house hunters looking at photos of potential properties online, it is important for the exterior of a property to look its best. With garage doors making up around 30% of the facia of an average house, it is not something that should be overlooked when planning a project. Garador offers a range of contemporary stainless steel design doors that will set homes apart. The design range of doors includes subtle stainless steel finishes, providing a secure and ultra-stylish solution for any garage. With a range of matching front doors on offer too, Garador has created a solution to keep all entrances stylish and secure. Todays home-owners really care about the appearance of a potential property and the garage door has traditionally been plain...until now. Our Design Door range is already proving to be extremely popular as these doors can add personality and style to the exterior of any property. With the option of selecting a matching Factory interior showing Beaumont front door steel panel doors from our Frontguard range too, we can offer a stylish and secure solution f or any style of home.

The Origin Easifold Doors can be opened around a corner of the building leaving unobstructed access to and from the interior. To install an unobstructed moving corner post configuration, the new building must incorporate a cantilevered roof support in its structural design. If this is not possible, in refurbishment projects for example, a fixed corner support post will have to be considered. Origin 90 moving corner door sets and in-line door sets suit modern house designs as their clean lines blend beautifully with the rest of the building. GOING UP...
The new range of stainless steel Library Ladders from architectural glazing and interiors specialist D R Services helps building owners make the best use of their wall space. The new Library Ladders allow building users to install floor-to-ceiling bookshelves or general storage and access them safely and easily. Full-height shelving is becoming increasingly popular as people seek better use of the available space. Julie Jarvis, director of D R Services says that the new, German-made ladders fill a niche in the market: No-one else satisfies this market requirement and there are a lot of large residential houses, libraries and shops that need to use the entire volume of the building rather than just the footprint space, she said.

BEST IN SHOW
A new anchor system from Ancon that changes the way concrete slab-to-wall joints are constructed has been voted Best Product in Show at the 2013 UK Concrete Show. The Ancon KSN Anchor creates high performance joints quickly and more safely than re-bend continuity boxes or couplerbased solutions which involve either rebar straightening or awkward anchorage lengths in the wall. The internallythreaded anchors are simply cast into the wall and, during construction of the adjoining slab, accept continuation bars
REVERSIBLE SYSTEM
The Litchfield Group has launched a high performance reversible window profile series, with a 0.8W/m2K U-value. The Sheerframe 8000 Reversible offers thermal performance and energy efficiency. The windows are compatible with all levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes and provide an easy solution for meeting Part B of Building Regulations for escaping and evacuating, thanks to its efficient reversible operating system. Featuring a highly efficient, fivechambered profile system for improved insulation and strength, the PVC profiles minimise heat loss through the frame.
prepared with a Bartec parallelthread. Unlike re-bend systems where bar length, spacing and diameter are restricted by physical box dimensions, KSN Anchors provide total design flexibility. The KSN system easily accommodates the longer lap lengths now required by Eurocode 2 and a standard timber carrier allows multiple anchors to be installed simultaneously, at the designed spacing.

hen the fashion became to install an outdoor decking area in a garden, the use of natural stone fell quite considerably. But, as with every five minutes of fashion fame, the old guard is fighting back and enjoying a resurgence. More and more people are beginning to realise that the timeless elegance of stone far outweighs the here and now of decking. The maintenance headache is not a factor either, with natural stone being relatively maintenance-free, just requiring a jet wash every so often. But it is not just the convenience aspect that is making natural stone a popular choice again. Stone expert, Simon Stainer, director of Sussex-based Horsham Stone & Reclamation looks at the various benefits that including natural stone in an outdoor area can bring. Laying a natural stone patio has a number of practical benefits such as its durability and versatility, lasting much longer than decking and being able to endure a lot of wear and tear. Add in the fact that it will look beautiful from day one, it does not need a sealant and is extremely resilient to harsh weather conditions, and it is easy to see why its in demand again. The versatility of stone means that once it is quarried it can be cut to many different shapes and sizes, so whether it is being used for a small courtyard, or an area in sprawling acres, it does offer the opportunity to create a truly one-off space.
This also means that it can not only be used to create a traditional English country garden, but also a minimalist area where the stone is carved to create one-off individual sculptures. The many different tones and colours that different types of stone bring also add to the individuality. As natural stone gradually weathers, the colours are constantly changing, which adds to the uniqueness of the area. Take Horsham stone for example, ripple marks occur on the top of the sandstone beds that weather into a range of beautiful yellows, browns and blues. Or, with the increasingly popular Indian Sandstone, people can choose from a wide variety of colours from the traditional grey, to the multi coloured rainbow. Then there is also the eco-friendliness. Natural stone is a material that is perhaps not top of the list when people think of green building products, tending to see it in a similar vein to concrete, but, as consumers, architects, builders and developers are looking to use more sustainable products, natural stone is also becoming the preference for those wishing to lead a more eco-friendly life. With the ease of maintenance, longevity of the material and the velocity at which it is naturally produced compared to the rate of use by mankind, it is one of the most sustainable products on the market. Additionally, when used correctly in the construction of a building, the thermal mass of stone makes it a great choice to help reduce the amount

of energy needed to heat a building, an excellent advantage as money saving is also high on many agendas. When a stone wall is included on the sunny side of a structure, it will store the heat and release it slowly over a period of time, helping to retain heat in colder weather and vice versa. Add in the factor of shopping locally, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the distance that the stone has to travel, and natural stone opens up to a whole new audience. Large, big named DIY stores will have a number of samples which may have been imported from overseas. But by going to your local stone yard, the product will have been quarried only a few miles away, severely cutting down on the carbon footprint. You are also buying something that is truly local. Furthermore, and something which is very popular with Horsham Stone customers, is the fact that, at a stone yard you will be able to pick out certain pieces, which can really add character as no two pieces are the same. As the way we use our homes is changing, a stone floor is also increasingly being used to make an indoor/outdoor room. Stone is perhaps the only material that can successfully create the seamless connection between an indoor and outdoor
space, in particular limestone as it is suitable for both uses. But, with all the different types of stone available, how do people know what to choose? Speaking to a stone expert about a project, no matter how big or small, at a local stone yard will certainly help. But generally, Sawn Indian sandstones and Granite work well for a contemporary look because of their clean and smooth finish, whereas reclaimed Yorkstone and Horsham Stone flagstones work well for period properties. For pathways and cottage patios, we would always recommend crazy paving as it has a lot of character, and then for something really special, Tumbled Indian Sandstone for use around swimming pools, as the tumbled effect gives a softer feel underfoot. There are a number of other cheaper materials on the market that will create a nice looking patio area, but I honestly believe that for longevity and a truly beautiful space, you cant beat the stunning look of natural stone.

OPTIMUM CONDITION
Osmo UK, the eco-friendly wood and finishes expert, has developed a finish to protect, maintain and restore exterior oak furnishings. Oak UVProtection-Oil will rejuvenate the wood, leaving it looking in top condition for the upcoming summer months. Osmo Oak UVProtection-Oil consists of natural ingredients to eliminate algae and fungal decay and provide optimal protection against the sun. By absorbing into the oak, the oil allows the surface to remain healthy and elastic, preventing it from drying and becoming brittle, and will not crack, flake, peel or blister. Suitable for cladding, windows and doors, it provides a satinmatt, clear finish that not only protects the wood surface but also enhances the natural look of the wood. Exterior wood has to withstand harsh weathering conditions throughout the winter months and often leaves the material looking grey and tired, explained Steve Grimwood, Osmo UKs MD. Oak UV-Protection-Oil strengthens the wood from within, allowing it to breathe and moisture to evaporate ensuring a flawless finish.

To help you decide what to look for in a reliable LED supplier, here is a ten-point LED buyers checklist based on background, quality, performance and price: 1. Be responsible: Put Health & Safety first and insist on CE and RoHS-certified products only. Using non-compliant CE and RoHS products is also against the law; products lacking a CE mark have not passed basic electrical testing and could pose serious electrical hazards during installation and use. You can request to see copies of certificates for due diligence and your supplier should be able to provide copies on request. 2. Ensure that you are using a supplier who is WEEE compliant: If not, the products are illegal. WEEE regulations require electrical waste to be disposed of properly and safely. With todays numerous recycling schemes, it is easy to comply and there is no acceptable excuse for non-compliance. Your supplier should have its WEEE membership details to hand. 3. Protect your investment and future-proof your purchase: Conduct a background check on potential suppliers. A basic credit check and a look at their trading history will provide valuable information on financial standing and past performance. It can also be important if you need to make a warranty-based claim later on or if you are anticipating a long-term supply contract. 4. Look for a proven track record: Ask for feedback and references from previous customers on performance and service, something a good supplier will happily provide. Also, ask if you can try before you buy a reputable company will allow you to trial products, either free-of-charge or on saleor-return. Remember to take lux readings before and after to ensure the product is fit-for-purpose.
eplacing energy-hungry conventional lamps with LED equivalents makes economic and environmental sense. LED lighting products are energy efficient and cost-effective with ultra long life spans compared to traditional units. Therefore, making the decision to change should be an easy one. Choosing a supplier, however, may not be quite so straightforward, especially with no formal performance standards to measure against. It is very easy to fall in to the trap of purchasing based on grand claims rather than actual performance. Also, the variance in products and performance on offer is so wide that choosing the right product and the right supplier can be a minefield.
5. Quality of data: Do not rely on grand claims; ask to see data on product performance where you can see evidence of power consumption, light output, installation guides, etc. 6. Quality of manufacture: Make sure the product is mechanically sound. If you can hear a rattle when you shake it, thats not a good sign! Check that the body is robust and durable and, if relevant, check its IP rating. Also, enquire about stock availability continuity of supply is essential and suppliers quoting six to eight weeks for stock should probably be avoided. Leading, reputable suppliers will hold sufficient stock to cater for their customers ongoing and urgent needs.

7. Technical support: How well does the supplier understand the new technology? Buy from an LED lighting specialist, someone who understands the challenges you face when lighting your premises and has experience of delivering LED installations of a similar style and size. 8. After-sales service: Does your supplier offer a guarantee and, if so, for how long? LED lighting products offer an ultra-long lifespan, so guarantees should reflect this. A confident manufacturer will provide at least three years and should be able to support the warranty period with proof of live installations that have performed reliably for similar periods of time. 9. Supplier credibility: Know with whom you are dealing. Manufacturers develop and produce product, and invest heavily in R&D. Their engineers work within existing parameters of LED technology. Installers may not understand component configurations in detail, and elements that can alter performance often rely on specialised electronics. 10. And finally: Only when you are satisfied with everything else, look at pricing: If products seem too cheap, there will be reasons. These could include poor quality components and sub-standard manufacturing techniques. Low quality LEDs will cause problems such as inadequate light performance, while poorly assembled products can pose serious installation and safety hazards. Other common problems include unreliability (i.e. colourshifting after use), rapid degradation of light output, plus high failures in large quantities and quality of light output not fit-forpurpose. Furthermore, these and other issues are frequently exacerbated by poor or non-existent after sales support. You do need to be confident that, in the event of a problem, your supplier will rectify it fast, effectively and efficiently. Beware of cheap, inferior products provided by unscrupulous suppliers. Remember; in common with all quality products, if the price youre being quoted for LED lamps and luminaries seems too cheap to be true, ask yourself why. They will inevitably cost you more in the long run, once problems start appearing. LED offers a number of significant benefits, including drastic CO2 and running cost reduction, lower maintenance, long lifespan and instant switch-on. Another bonus is that the retrofitting options offered by manufacturers such as LED Eco Lights means products fit straight into existing fittings, thereby drastically reducing the scale of the installation as well as the cost.

It also follows that the specification of the door systems to be installed will be strongly influenced by all of these factors, as well as the normal criteria for capital expenditure such as quality, appearance, maintenance implications and whole-life cost. Multiple door types with different modes of opening and diverse constructions are therefore going to be required, even within smaller units, including residential care homes, doctors surgeries and dedicated clinics. It is preferable, if not imperative, that the architect and other members of the delivery team engage with a major manufacturer having both the expertise and the capacity to fulfil a contracts requirements as early as possible in the design process. In this way, all relevant requirements both operational and in terms of creating a comfortable environment for staff and patients alike can be met. levels of pedestrian traffic, such as at main entrances to the wards, A&E, and other departments, or to ensure spaces like theatres (and their staff) can maintain sterility. The front or main entrance to the modern hospital offers both user groups and inspectors an important first impression of the building, while also allowing the specifier to make a strong visual statement. Furthermore, due to footfall, it may also be deemed important to emphasise energy saving in the specification. For these reasons, circular and inward or outward curved door installations are proving increasingly popular for providing direct access or forming a dedicated lobby space. A second curved or a linear sliding door can be mounted behind the outer one to create an effective windscreen. A revolving door, meanwhile, represents the ultimate in terms of preventing heat loss, or noise entering, and does so in dramatic style. Angular sliding doors, installed as two-leaf or four-leaf options are also available to match modern styles of architecture, and to make the most of corner entrances. Elsewhere around the building perimeter, there may be the call for a staff entrance with a security interlock system, possibly allowing individuals to identify themselves using a key pad or proximity reader for ID cards. Then, during daily working activities, personnel may need to be provided with rapid roll shutters to allow access to delivery ramps, or even emergency entrance doors where paramedics bring their vehicles as close as possible to the Accident & Emergency area. Following their admission by whichever route, patients will
undergo triage, preparation for elective surgery, or simply routine consultations that see them pass through a series of internal doors of different type and purpose. While a suite of consulting rooms might be reached through a multi-leaf telescopic door, the X-RAY department should be shielded by a radiation-proof door; and when they reach the pharmacy, it is prudent to have the valuable and potentially dangerous contents protected by a burglar-proof entranceway. Many medical facilities built in recent years have, of course, been procured under the PFI initiative and, in such situations, the developer involved will normally have examined the availability of maintenance contracts along with the purchase cost. Where NHS trusts are negotiating their own contracts, the capital works department generally leaves it to estates management to organize the service arrangements. In such circumstances it is recommended that the estates officer, or facilities manager, engages with a reputable and flexible company which is able to offer maintenance agreements for not only its own doors systems and door operators, but also those made by other manufacturers. As part of an internationally recognised group with half a century of experience in door production, Record UK promotes the ethos of repair over replacement, wherever possible, in order to optimise life-cycle and sustainability; while offering the widest possible choice of door systems for new build and refurbishment projects.

96% CLEANER
Research by LST radiator specialist, Contour Casings, is beginning to shed light on the levels of potentially harmful bacteria that could be present inside radiator guards located in a healthcare environment. In a comparative study at an NHS Trust Hospital in the South of England, it was discovered that there could potentially be 682,000 bacteria colonies present inside a single radiator guard that has no internal access for cleaning or antimicrobial protection. Numerous swabs were taken from various guard locations; this figure was then extrapolated out to reflect an average-sized radiator guard. Based on this study, an average hospital ward or corridor containing 40 traditional fixed radiator guards could contain in excess of five million potentially harmful bacteria colonies. The diversity of the bacteria discovered was also a revealing insight, with over 10,450 different bacteria types identified. When the results of the traditional radiator guard were compared with the same number of swabs taken from a range of modern LST radiator guards in this case the Trionic DeepClean guard from Contour Casings, which has full internal access for cleaning and inherent antimicrobial technology the difference was striking. The DeepClean guard contained 96% fewer bacterial colonies overall than the traditional guard and there were also 74% fewer bacteria types. Radiator guard designs such as those developed by Contour Casings, now feature a full-access front door, which allows one cleaning operative fast and simple access to every internal surface without assistance from estates. The DeepClean guard includes BioCote antimicrobial technology in its paintwork, reducing levels of harmful bacteria such as MRSA and E.coli by up to 99.99% in less than two hours.

Mike lamb, managing director of surface heating and cooling specialist, Warmafloor, looks at ceiling cooling systems as a means of improving energy efficiency, reducing waste and, ultimately, future proofing buildings such as notoriously challenging educational facilities...
he construction industry is under pressure to create more sustainable lifetime buildings, with the 2008 Climate Change Act stipulating that all UK organisations have to make carbon emission reductions of at least 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050, against 1990 levels. Responsible for an increasing amount of carbon dioxide emissions 2.4m tonnes in 1990 and 3.3m tonnes in 2006 the higher education sector is under pressure to improve. The Government has tried to play its part. Its Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme provides financial incentives for such institutions to reduce emissions and invest in energy saving measures but, in spite of this, a recent report has revealed that carbon emissions at many of the UKs universities rose by as much as 3.9% between 2005 and 2010. The need for change is clear and the time to act is now. With architects creating ever more complex modern buildings, the construction industry needs to think creatively as to how green technologies can be used to the best of their ability and ensure that sustainable buildings can perform as intended. Energy management in large educational facilities can be notoriously difficult as the mix of multi-purpose rooms, high ceiling spaces and differing user demands and schedules makes predicting and then maintaining a consistent energy consumption level a real challenge. This is a challenge that we can no longer ignore. Predictions indicate that the average UK temperature could
rise by as much as 8C in the next century, so the energy consumption and conditioning of our buildings is ever more important. This means that the role of cooling and ventilation is allocated a higher profile in commercial, industrial and residential design briefs. With the ability to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste, ceiling cooling systems have the potential to unlock significant savings and serve as an example of the intelligent and innovative design needed to future proof our buildings.
Absorbing excess energy
Ceiling cooling, utilising embedded coil technology, helps reduce the reliance on air conditioning systems in a building. It works by absorbing the heat energy from the room into the ceiling coils embedded into the structural ceiling beams and then rejecting it, via the plate heat exchanger, to thermal piles, slinkies or ground loops. There is also the potential for heat to be ejected into large water courses, for example landscaped ponds or lakes. The energy that is absorbed not only comes from the sensible internal gains within the space from occupants, but also from solar gains through windows and heat from in-room equipment such as computers, TVs and audio equipment. This energy is absorbed into the ceiling panels (which have embedded 20mm diameter polybutylene pipes circulating cool water) and then rejected from the building. Typically embedded in concrete structural ceiling beams, which have a high thermal mass, ceiling cooling systems deliver an excellent

Energy efficiency was the order of the day at Manchester Metropolitan Universitys (MMU) 20,000m2 Birley Fields Academic Building, where Warmafloor was commissioned to install its ceiling cooling system as a means of keeping energy costs and carbon emissions to a minimum. Due to open in September 2014, the brand new, 15-acre Birley Fields campus is the final part of the 350m investment in new facilities for MMU. The university has already committed to cutting carbon emissions and, over the last 12 months, has reduced the carbon footprint of each of its students by 5.5%. Over 139m has been invested in the campus to help make further reductions, with the aim of lowering the carbon footprint of existing campus operations by 60% and working towards a zero carbon, zero water and zero waste campus. Bearing the burden of responsibility for the training and development of our future leaders, universities have a duty to provide a comfortable, healthy and safe environment for
Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU)
students. Warmafloor was therefore commissioned to design a bespoke ceiling cooling system to deliver optimum comfort as well as meet the stringent cost and energy saving targets. In order to achieve this, Warmafloor worked in close collaboration with Creagh Concrete to embed its system into pre-cast concrete panels, in a new arrangement to boost efficiency across the building. Quality is of the utmost importance in any building project and the ceiling panelling is manufactured in a controlled environment off-site, making it easier to monitor the mix, placement of the coils and curing, thus guaranteeing the quality of the finished cast. This indoor controlled process also removes the challenge of installing coils and pouring concrete in poor weather, which can affect the concentration of the precast mix and the method by which it is installed, as well as add weeks on to project completion deadlines. Another advantage of controlled conditions is that it enhances the concrete durability, ensuring that it is able to withstand heavy imposed structural loads. The cooling coils are also fully protected because they are embedded into the ceiling panels. Ready for immediate installation, the panels could quickly be installed in the Academic Building, resulting in a shorter project build time and lower labour costs. Finally, the system of ceiling cooling coils embedded into the concrete panels, was the ideal design partner for the Academic Building, providing a fair faced concrete finish in line with the buildings modern architectural style. Forming part of the universitys Estates Investment Strategy, the Academic Building is designed to meet a BREEAM Excellent rating, continuing the universitys heritage of environmental responsibility. Last year, MMU received a 1st Class certification in the People & Planet Green League.

Phil Harvey, Director of Technical Services at Timloc, comments: Whilst plasterboard faced access panels are still in common use, the new Timloc beaded range offers so many advantages in comparison. Plasterboard faced hatches and doors can be expensive and are prone to cracking and crumbling during transit, storage, installation and regular use. Doors requiring plaster skim finish also need preparation to prevent locks, hinges and tolerance gaps becoming blocked and are difficult to finish to a high standard. Its also worth remembering that having an access door/hatch finished
with plasterboard alone, will not make the product fire-rated, he adds. In line with Part J of the Building Regulations, Timlocs fire-rated and nonfire rated beaded panel ranges also help meet the new gas safety industry requirements for concealed boiler flue inspection access. The fire-rated panels are also draught stripped and insulated which means they dont compromise the acoustic integrity of the wall, thereby meeting Part E of the Building Regulations. Furthermore, unlike plasterboard faced panels, which, if damaged, require a complete and often costly, replacement, Timloc panels can be transported safely and easily, but if any damage is sustained, they can be filled much more cost effectively - in a similar way to car body repairs. In situ, the beaded panels retain their aesthetics for much longer than plasterboard which can tend to age quickly after installation.

Demonstrating sustainability
Terra Therma discusses the idea behind a new Eco House in East Anglia which is helping contractors, architects and students alike to understand and appreciate the new technologies now available...
or many of us, renewable energy solutions and the latest technologies available are unfamiliar territory, but they are increasingly hot topics of conversation. With the unusual, and somewhat unprecedented weather conditions across the globe, the worlds leaders are trying to encourage everyone to lower their carbon footprints. This is especially true in Britain where the Government has launched initiatives offering financial incentives to encourage 15% of the UKs energy to be generated from renewable sources by 2020. With this in mind, a new demonstration Eco House, the first of its kind in East Anglia, has been opened and is helping contractors, architects and students get to grips with the most cutting-edge, eco-friendly technologies that are on the market. The two-storey Eco House in Maldon, Essex, shows interactive working examples of the latest innovations in renewable heating systems ahead of the launch of Government initiatives, which will offer generous grants and subsidies for property developments and commercial projects over a period of up to 20 years. It is hoped those who are designing, developing and building new premises will gain inspiration from seeing and hearing the latest developments in glazing, lighting, dry screed flooring systems, air-to-water heat pumps and underfloor heating. A variety of ecofriendly insulation types are also on display, including lambs wool, hemp and recycled plastic bottles. The Eco House was created by renewable energy specialist Terra Therma, in response to the
many frequently-recurring questions posed by builders, architects and commercial developers considering implementing these new technologies. Dimensions, aesthetics, noise levels and speed of operation are some of the most common areas of concern but, at the demonstration Eco House, visitors can see and hear working examples (including inner workings) for themselves, giving them a real feel for how the products perform in a realistic setting. Cliff Arnold, general manager of CTC, the renewables division of Enertech who visited the Eco House said: The Scandinavians have been using this type of renewable energy for years but here, in this country, we are only just beginning to catch on. He anticipated that sustainable eco systems will become increasingly popular with more architects and developers incorporating them into their designs as the benefits become more widely known, and, in turn, higher demand is likely to bring the costs down. Among the numerous guests who attended the official opening of the demonstration Eco House were architects, contractors, John Whittingdale MP and lecturers from Chelmsford College which runs BTEC Diploma courses in Construction. Were learning lots about underfloor heating and new technology which draws heat from the ground to make central heating and we will pass this on to our students who are likely to want to come to see how this technology works for themselves, said one lecturer. The Eco House demonstrates how air

SUSTAIN AWARD
New from Aereco is the fully demand controlled MVHR system, the DXR. It is said to be the first ever fully DC domestic MVHR system both on supply and exhaust to be developed. Aereco says its new DXR system can achieve 92% energy savings compared with a mechanical exhaust ventilation (MEV) system at constant airflow, while providing the same indoor air quality. Aereco DXR is engineered to automatically adjust ventilation according to the specific needs of each room when other products on the market propose constant or globally controlled airflows. Aereco DXR combines the benefits of both airflow modulation and heat recovery. Modulation enables a significant reduction of the average airflows while providing excellent air quality. Heat losses on average are halved in comparison with a constant airflow ventilation system. The heat exchanger operates with a yield of around 85% recovery thereby achieving in the region of 92% energy savings compared with a MEV system. Additionally, Aereco DXR enhances primary energy consumption by reducing fan power. Another major benefit of the Aereco DXR is that filters stay cleaner longer, resulting in less power consumption. Jewson has won the Award for Energy at the Sustain Awards for its new web-based gas control system, which has allowed the company to significantly reduce energy use across its sites. Rod Leigh, director for sustainability at Jewson commented: The implementation of our new, web-based gas control system is the latest in a long line of initiatives designed to help us reduce our environmental impact. The web-based gas control system monitors external and internal temperatures and controls all aspects of our in-branch heating systems, meaning that all of our sites are now visible and adjustable enabling us to significantly reduce our energy costs.
Internorm, which offers nine Passivhaus-certified window and door systems, provided its HV240 range to complete the project. The triple glazed, timber-aluminium windows come in a range of colour finishes and actively maximise energy gain. While minimising thermal losses, the windows are also designed to optimise thermal gain and achieve Ug values of up to 0.5W/m2K, in comparison to conventional double glazed windows that often lie around 1.4W/m2K.

TRAIN TO GAIN
The Green Deal has finally launched, and it could provide a massive boost to the refurbishment market, but be aware only those with accreditation to PAS 2030 need to get involved. One of the requirements is to have evidence of product or system supplier training, so Kingspan Insulation has developed a practical, hands-on training course for dry-lining installers to help make sure that they can access the opportunities presented by Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation (ECO) funded projects.
REDUCING ENERGY
The University of Liverpool Sports and Fitness Centre pool has been transformed by using Kalwall to replace the existing single glazed bolted glass assembly. The Kalwall not only reduces the amount of energy needed to warm the pool in winter, while keeping it cool in summer, but also provides privacy. A new, false ceiling above the pool and the installation of an energy efficient mechanical plant also make carbon savings. Importantly, the translucent system transmits diffused natural daylight into the pool area without the glare and stark contrasts of light and shade produced by conventional glazing.
The affordable, one-day course is available in two centres, one in Barnsley and one in Dartford. It is aimed at existing dry-wall contractors or plasterers with at least two years experience, who are looking to gain Green Deal or ECO work. Using Kingspan Kooltherm Internal Wall Insulation Systems, trainees will learn the best practice approach to dealing with everyday refurbishment installation issues.

e tend to think of burning as a fairly simple physical process. Even small children understand it. If you set fire to a piece of wood, it burns. Simple. But burning is really a chemical process and, strictly speaking, the solid wood itself doesnt burn. What actually happens is a little more complicated. When heated by a naked flame or friction, the molecules in wood begin to vibrate and move apart, becoming a volatile gas: smoke. This gas combines with the oxygen in the atmosphere; it is this combining of molecules, this chemical reaction that produces energy as a side-effect in the form of heat and light: a flame. So, the solid wood isnt burning at all, the gasses released by the heating of the wood form just half of a molecular relationship that creates fire. Actually, its even more complicated than that. If I was to tell you that water is actually burnt hydrogen, youll have some idea of just how complex it is. And if burning is such a deceptively complicated process, the means by which we defy that process must be equally, if not more, complicated. Which brings us to fire resistant boards: The idea that these crucial construction components can be effortlessly picked from the shelves of a local builders merchant or dropped into a virtual shopping trolley in some online equivalent, is a misguided and, quite possibly, dangerous one.
designed for that particular application. It is the words rigorous and testing which are key here. In fact, whenever the word testing is not accompanied by the word rigorous, alarm bells should ring, particularly when it comes to the subject of fire resistance.
A brief overview of fire testing
As youd imagine, fire testing isnt simply a case of measuring how long it takes for a building board to fail. Anyone with a large back garden, a stopwatch and a complete disregard for their neighbours could do that. There are three core criteria for fire testing: integrity, insulation and load bearing. The integrity of a building board is essentially a boards ability to remain physically intact. When flames have passed through the construction and have ignited a cotton pad on the non-fire side of the board, the board is said to have ceased to remain intact. In a sense, material testing laboratories dont measure the success of products so much as how long it takes for them to fail.
Continued overleaf...
In a very real sense, certainly from the point of view of an architect or specifier, there is no such thing as a fire-resistant board. There is a board offering 120 minutes of fire resistance in a suspended ceiling application. There is a board offering 90-240 minutes of fire resistance to internal independent wall linings. There is a board offering 90 minutes of fire resistance to a nonload-bearing steel stud partition with an overall thickness of 195mm and maximum centres of 600mm. But there is no such thing as a board which is simply fire resistant. The relative fire resistance of a board is entirely dependent upon its application and can only be measured by rigorous testing, not simply of the board itself, but of the board as part of a system

Burnt hydrogen
Why EN testing?
The insulation criteria is measured using thermocouples that monitor the amount of heat passing through the structure being tested. Failure occurs when the average temperature has exceeded a predefined maximum or, indeed, if a single thermocouple records an excessive temperature. The load bearing criteria measures a structures ability to maintain a given imposed load under fire-exposure conditions.
How to test for rigorous testing: Rigorously
Ensuring the board youre about to purchase or specify has been rigorously tested for your particular application can be extremely complicated, not to mention labour-intensive, involving wide-ranging online research and hours spent poring over technical datasheets. And while all of that is, to a certain extent, unavoidable, a lot of the pressure can be eased by simply talking to your building board supplier, not only to extract information but also to assess their attitude to testing. Fire testing cannot be approached as a box-ticking exercise. A responsible manufacturer and/or supplier of building boards will have a fire testing ethos. Their testing will be an ongoing, permanent process driven by a continuous improvement mindset. They wont simply send products for testing, they will be actively involved in that testing. They wont use a material testing laboratory, they will have a long-term and collaborative relationship with a material testing laboratory while simultaneously respecting said laboratorys expertise, qualifications and, of course, independence. It is also worth enquiring as to whether your building board supplier has fully embraced EN testing.
The proliferation of continental trade necessitated the creation of a European Norm (EN) to guarantee consistency of quality irrespective of borders. A side-effect has been to create a standard that is, in most cases, more onerous. The fact that an EN standard has to satisfy the current standards of many countries and cannot be reduced to the demands of just DIN or BS, for example, means it is almost inevitably going to be more ambitious in its scope. This is why EN testing generally demands a more stringent increase in furnace temperatures; dictates that thermocouples be placed in more challenging locations on the specimen material, and can, for example, require cover strips to be applied over studs in thin-gauge metal-framed partitions to protect from additional temperatures. An embracing of EN testing also demonstrates a commitment to future requirements, says John Taylor, business development manager at Euroform Products. Were not satisfied to just meet current criteria, were looking to the next standard, and the one after that, and the one after that...

FITTING GUARANTEE
A recent report suggests as many as 19 million doors could qualify for replacement under the Green Deals terms. The Golden Rule is that the repayments should not exceed the energy savings, and its thought that most loans will be taken over a period of five to ten years. This raises the question of guarantees. Without a ten year guarantee, consumers could face making repayments for a product after its guarantee has expired. Thats OK if the product still works, but is a problem if the product has failed. Consumer protection is an integral part of the Green Deal and its a requirement of the scheme that the term of the loan is no longer than the lifetime of the measure. A good guarantee will prove a major aid to sales for installers. Nick Dutton, managing director of Door-Stop International, comments: Composite doors one of the best, least disruptive and most energy efficient measures available under the Green Deal are usually guaranteed for a maximum of five years. However, all elements of the standard DoorStop door (ERA Vectis lock, stainless steel furniture and Door-Stop glazing cassettes) are guaranteed for a full ten years. In fact, the ERA lock is so secure that, if a burglar breaks in through the lock, the whole door will be replaced under guarantee and the homeowner will also receive 500.

SILVERWOOD SOLUTION
The A. Proctor Groups Silverwood timber cladding is now being used by the Accord Group. The Accord Group has set up an award-winning factory called LoCaL Homes to manufacture its own timber frame houses. At Pattern Gardens in Darlaston, West Midlands, the Silverwood Biseau profile was factory fitted on a 200mm frame to almost 100 new homes. Additional services provided by the A. Proctor Group included routed cladding to allow site fit at the wall and floor junctions by the contractor on site. Silverwood offers a wide exterior cladding product range which includes a diversity of colours, appearances and profiles provided with ease of installation and maintenance as standard. It also offers a comprehensive ten-year, maintenance-free guarantee against timber decay and is durable for up to 50 years as a result of the combined timber treatment and the Silverwood factory-applied paint finish.

ROBUST CLADDING
Sotech recently supplied a faade solution for an ASDA multi-storey car park in Weymouth. Working on the new multi-storey, Sotech was required to provide a faade material which was in keeping with the stores terracotta tiled roof, but with a more robust nature. Sotechs Optima IPC extruded aluminium plank system proved to be the answer for the 50,000 project.
DEMAND INCREASES
Panel Systems has reported an increase in demand for its aluminium composite panels. Aesthetics is still the number one reason that architectural panels are chosen especially for modern urban and city centre locations. On a recent project, the architect for The Link, a flagship community building for young people in Thamesmead, London, chose Aluglaze panels in four distinctive colours red, orange, yellow and green. Aluglaze was specified due to the range of powder coated colours available which were used to create a vibrant building faade that complemented the colour of the curtain walling.
Over 450m2 of the extruded IPC system, known as Xplank, was provided in a textured PPC finish to match the roof tiles surface and colour. Xplank is only a tenth of the weight of traditional terracotta tiling and is recommended for areas where the cladding comes into pedestrian areas, due to its strength and impact resistance. The Xplank was impact tested at both Sotechs state-of-theart testing facility and by independent authorities. These results were compared directly with the durability of traditional terracotta tiling.

GUARANTEED TO BE GREENER
Sika Liquid Plastics has launched a new range of green roof systems which includes all types of green roof finishing options. The new product offer gives specifiers peace of mind that every element of the green roof system is guaranteed to last as long as the waterproofing which can be up to 25 years as long as the appropriate maintenance contract is in operation. Specifiers also benefit from all the other key advantages of using a Sika Liquid Plastics system, including a seamless and flexible waterproof membrane and completely cold installation.
to the exterior one for a 3D effect) in a variety of colours ranging from white to blue to make the building a landmark one. The 500mm-wide panels are manufactured with a tongue and groove coupling and are fixed with aluminium fasteners. Theoretically, faades can be more than 200m long and a panel height of up to 25m can be mounted in one piece. Some 200 times tougher than glass, the panels enable light transmission between 5-65% and, at the same time, are highly efficient insulators of heat (<0.71W/mK) and sound (21-43dB).
Cembrit has launched a new base board specially designed for insulated render systems. With the application of liquid renders, specifiers can create faades combining a monolithic appearance with all the advantages of rainscreen claddings. Cement based Cembrit PB, has low water absorbency and is dimensionally stable. It wont expand and contract with heat and cold nor will it swell and shrink due to changes in moisture crucial characteristics inhibiting surface cracking in the render finish. Cembrit PBs specially developed, reinforced, chamfered edges mean the board can be fixed close to their edges. This maximizes stability at the butt joints, further reducing the risk of the render cracking along the joints, which can be a vulnerable area of the faade.

SOFTWARE ADOPTION
Timber frame manufacturer, Wyckham Blackwell, is the latest company to adopt Wolf Systems advanced timber frame detailing software, Horizon. Horizon is the UKs first timber frame application built on Autodesks BIM technology, Revit. Using Horizons proprietary 3D building objects, timber frame designers can realise the advantage of working in a true BIM environment. As the software is built on Revit, Horizon automates the modelling of true 3D building elements rather than the primitive 3D objects found in alternative software. Information rich, timber frame models created through Horizon enable fast and accurate production of elevations, sections, drawing sheets and schedules. By working on a single building model, design accuracy and productivity are intrinsically improved. Upgrading to Horizon was a logical move for Wyckham Blackwell, said director David Himmons: We use Wolf products for trusses, joists and timber frame and have used the companys design software for several years. It made sense for us to upgrade to Horizon for two main reasons: Firstly, we are increasing our design capability and have appointed an additional timber frame designer. Secondly, if we are to remain at the forefront of our industry, we must stay abreast of the technology.

UNDERLAY DONATION
The A. Proctor Group has donated ten rolls of its high specification pitched roof underlay, Roofshield, to renovate The Meal Mill on the Scottish Isle of Raasay. The refurbishment of the old Mill will help to sustain and develop both the economy and cultural heritage of the remote island of Raasay. Roofshield has unique vapour and air permeability characteristics, which allow even the most complex of pitched roofs to breathe without the need for traditional air gaps or secondary venting products. Roofshield is as easy to install as traditional roofing felt.
The showground is on a flood plain which meant the building had to be raised by two feet. It has large, sloping buttresses which echo the nearby limestone escarpment. The imaginative use of windows makes the roof appear to be floating. The two side elevations are clad in stone from a local quarry and the rear elevation is constructed from sustainable larch. Redwood boarding, again from a sustainable source has been used for ceilings and other fittings.
The new Allianz Park stadium in North London, home to Saracens Rugby Club, has raised the bar for audio systems in the world of rugby. The upgrade to a concert-standard sound system for the 10,000-seater stadium, designed and installed by RNSS, has been designed to give fans the best possible audio experience. Hi-fidelity sound is now available throughout the stadium. In addition to the new East grandstand, it also encompasses the three other stands and all internal spaces. This includes the 105m long interior space under the East stand which doubles as a match day bar, indoor athletics track, and training area. All 17 corporate boxes are equipped with individual multi-source audio and local level controls, and the four function rooms have the same capability, plus comprehensive full range audio playback from a variety of audio sources, including wireless microphones and CD players via a bespoke control rack.

VEKA
VEKA fabricator, Halo's new window system is unlike anything else currently available on the UK PVCu market. The window system supplier has unveiled the TwinSash which can achieve a U-value of 0.38W/mK and reduce noise levels by around 50dB. This level of performance is reached by using triple-glazed, krypton-filled units and foam-filled sections. Amazingly, it can even achieve extremely low U-values using what is considered to be the industry's most cost-effective combination of components; using two 28mm double glazed IGUs (air filled, float glass and aluminium spacer bar) the TwinSash can still achieve an impressive U-value of just 1.2W/mK. Thanks to its enviable level of energy-efficiency, TwinSash is one of the only PVCu window systems to meet the requirements for Passivhaus.
