BUDGET BUZZ

John Jeffries Laidlaw Interiors Group Whilst the budget statement pledges to invest more in the building of schools and hospitals, which we see as a key area for growth, this is realistically some three years away from happening. To help improve infrastructure, we really need to see investment in projects that can help make a difference today greater investment in those more short term projects will help to kick-start a flagging industry. Tim Pollard Plumb Center Were pleased people are getting support with mortgages and deposits for new homes and we hope that, by combining the new budget announcements with the retrofit work being undertaken on ageing housing stock via the Green Deal, it will make the UK one of the worlds leading energy efficient countries. Simon Rubinsohn RICS The Government has largely failed to realise that infrastructure projects dont need to be big to be effective in creating growth. In fact small might very well be beautiful. Ian Fletcher British Property Federation "This is a strong package of help for housing. Annual transactions are half what they were and that has knock-on consequences for all those parts of the economy that rely on people moving. Helping people needing a deposit has for some time been cited as the missing piece of a coherent housing policy and both are therefore welcome." Colin Wilson DLA Piper The Government is definitely moving in the right direction by voicing its support for the nuclear and carbon capture and storage projects. The deliverability of wider infrastructure projects in transport and social infrastructure would be boosted by similar additional support being offered by Government and it following through on those commitments." Jon Poore Turner & Townsend Public sector infrastructure spending should not be an indiscriminate spraying of investment around the country. Without focus and carefully costed plans, the chancellor might as well send a fleet of RAF helicopters to drop bundles of banknotes. Leonie Greene Solar Trade Association Renewable technologies like solar need bold leadership and a positive vision if we're to compete successfully in the global race the prime minister keeps highlighting. Were on a path to nowhere if his chancellor continues to ignore climate change, the economic potential of the green economy, and the dangerous upward trajectory of fossil fuel prices.

Liverpudlian innovation

Ryder Architecture's four-storey, 7m Innovation Centre 3 at Liverpool Science Park started on site on 18 March 2013. The 3,750m2 flexible office and commercial laboratory accommodation builds on the success of the two previous science park innovation centres and completes the Metropolitan Cathedral campus, terminating the vista from the urban parkland to the south and creating a focus for the science park community. Innovation Centre 3 (ic3), which merges with Innovation Centre 1 (ic1) at the upper two levels to maximise the efficiency of internal circulation, will provide adaptable office suites in a range of sizes and fully serviced laboratories with communal support facilities. Ryder Architecture's simple and elegant design is based on two contrasting but complementary elements a sharp edged rectilinear block that cantilevers out to face the main paths through the campus and a flowing organic form that snakes across to form the link with ic1. The cantilever box will be solidly clad in dark grey linear rainscreen panels, while a contrasting mix of clear and translucent/ frosted Reglit panels will clothe the curvature and fluidity of the organic form.

NPPF one year on...

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) recently marked its first anniversary and with it arrives the full force of the presumption in favour of sustainable development. With only 23 local authorities just 7% having in place NPPF compliant Local Plans, there is a window of opportunity for developers wishing to bring forward schemes. Yet, as Stuart Irvine, a director with planning and urban design consultancy Turley Associates says: The NPPF is not an excuse to justify bad development, it is an opportunity to realise good development in a far shorter time frame, and there are early signs that this is beginning to happen. There have been a number of appeal decisions delivered under the influence of the NPPF, where the balance of judgment has been swayed by the need to support economic growth and by a more realistic interpretation of what sustainable development means. Stuart added: The NPPF has yet to realise its true potential and it is only with the slow turning of the screw on Local Plan preparation, that the NPPF will really bite and great strides will be made.

Tallest tower takes shape

Rising 108 levels and 388m into the sky, Melbournes Australia 108 will be the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere. Designed by architect Fender Katsalidis, the building uses the Commonwealth star on the Australian flag as inspiration for the starburst architectural features at its summit. Australia 108 is crowned by a six star hotel, giving apartment owners a unique opportunity to share in the features and services of an international class hotel. The hotel lobby sits on the 84th floor, where residents and guests have access to two restaurants, two bars and several lounges. A fresh food market and caf also feature at ground and lower levels. Planning minister, Matthew Guy commented: Australia 108 will be an outstanding addition to Melbournes skyline. This tower signifies the best of Victorian architecture and a drive for enterprise and ingenuity that exists nowhere else in Australia. I am proud to approve a tower that will define our city for many years to come and which I am sure will become as iconic a Melbourne landmark as Flinders Street Station or Federation Square.

New algaebased faade

Arup unveiled the worlds first pilot bioreactor faade at the BIQ House during Hamburgs International Building Exhibition. With 200m2 of integrated photo-bioreactors, the passiveenergy house generates biomass and heat. At the same time, the system integrates additional functionalities such as dynamic shading, thermal insulation and noise abatement. The microalgae used in the faades is cultivated in flat panel glass bioreactors. In total, 129 bioreactors were installed on the South West and South East facing walls of the four-storey residential building. The heart of the system is the fully automated energy management centre, where solar thermal heat and algae are harvested in a closed loop to be stored and used to generate hot water.

New energy efficiency white paper

Drumbeat Energy Management has published a white paper on independent measurement & verification entitled IPMVP and improving energy-efficiency: The importance of independent measurement & verification. Energy efficiency is a market with tremendous potential but remains largely untapped. This white paper gives a reason for this inertia a lack of trust in the industry and uncertainty around the real level of energy savings that can be delivered to customers. The white paper highlights good practice in independent Measurement & Verification (M&V) as a simple and cost-effective solution to help overcome these barriers and to help to drive the sector forward. Drumbeat Energy Management aims to transform the way that businesses and other organisations manage their energy consumption. SUSTAINABILITY

Graham Sprigg

SYMPOSIUM
Ecobuild 2013: What next?

With this years Ecobuild event taking place last month, it is an ideal time to assess the impacts (both certain and potential) that the built environment sustainability exhibition may, or will, have. Has the three-day event pushed us further in the right direction? Can we now feel more optimistic about the collective path were taking? A number of topics were discussed and debated by leading figures in the field, but two of the major ones were the Governments Green Deal initiative, and the zero carbon homes policy. The first of the Ecobuild conferences was dedicated to the Green Deal an innovative loan-scheme that enables house owners to undertake energy efficiency improvements at no upfront cost. Speaking at the session was energy and climate change secretary Ed Davey, who used the opportunity to address a number of concerns that have arisen in recent times. So what do Daveys attempted alleviations mean for the scheme and the industry going forward? One of the primary concerns is that take-up of the initiative is too low. In response to this, Davey stated that legal reasons prevented him from disclosing exact figures, which simply added fuel to the rumours. However, since then, official figures have been released, showing that more than 1,800 assessments were lodged in the first month far more than most expected. Another topic that was hotly discussed throughout the event was the zero carbon homes policy and, in particular, what can be expected in terms of Part L of the Building Regulations. It has been widely recognised across the construction industry that uncertainty surrounding this topic is a major issue. Without clarity in terms of regulation, progress will continue to be hindered. The second day of the event saw communities minister Don Foster provide a highly anticipated update on these Building Regulations and, in particular, the upping of efficiency standards. Though no finalised actions were announced, Foster did confirm that a statement on Part L of the Building Regulations will be delivered in the spring. When this happens, the construction industry will get their much needed clarity and the path to zero carbon can continue. Though Ecobuild is the worlds largest event on sustainability in the built environment, it was not limited to just this. There were a number of seminars dedicated to wider sustainability subjects, including the controversial topics of fracking and nuclear power, providing a valuable insight into these areas. How successful the exhibition was in terms of moving us further in the right direction is something that cannot be answered simply. A lot more time is needed for the outcomes to have an effect, but I for one, am certainly optimistic. Celebrating a transport icon

On the 80th anniversary of the first public appearance of his Tube map design and the 150th anniversary of the London Underground, Harry Beck (1902-1974) was commemorated with an English Heritage blue plaque at his birthplace, 14 Wesley Road, Leyton, E10 on 25 March. Sam Mullins, London Transport Museum director said: Becks map was revolutionary in its simplicity. It has become a London icon and influenced the design of many Metro maps across the globe. His work forms part of the overall design ethic of Transport for London and its predecessor organisations, and his original artwork for the London map and the Paris Metro are both on display in London Transport Museums Design for Travel gallery.

Funding for training

FUNDING FOR TRAINING COULD BE THE LIFELINE YOU NEED

Kim Bendzak, managing director of Apple Construction Training, an accredited training provider for the construction sector, explores the training grants and funds available to help give your business that much needed boost...

ith the construction sector in survival mode, funding and grants to help train and develop the skills of you and your staff could be a lifeline for any business. Work may be scarce for some construction companies at the moment, but ensuring staff are equipped with the right skills that are up-to-date with health and safety requirements is essential for maintaining safety on site as well as avoiding any on the spot fines. The Health and Safety Executive announced plans to clamp down on any construction sites not meeting regulations with plans to target 3,000 construction sites as part of its annual inspection drive. Health and Safety inspectors can implement immediate fines during site visits if they believe health and safety procedures are not being followed. This can amount to thousands and even tens of thousands of pounds. There's also the hope that more work will come through since the Government promised funding to assist in the build of 120,000 new homes, an annual infrastructure investment of 33bn and 1bn towards the build of 100 free schools and academies. If we're to get Britain building again and support new construction projects then construction companies needs to continue to sustain skills so they can compete for new contracts and deliver high quality products. There are millions of pounds of funding and grants for training to help companies develop their workforce and to keep their sites safe, but few are aware of the money or know how to go about accessing it. Apprenticeships Hiring an apprentice can be an attractive prospect as employers can qualify for an apprenticeship grant through the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) via an accredited training provider, as long as the apprentice is guaranteed a full time job at the end of the course. Apprentices earn while they learn on the job. The courses are three to 12 months after which they're fully qualified to work on a construction site doing certain jobs such as a groundsman or a plant operator. Up-skill or retrain But it's not just new starters that get financial help with their career. If you want to up-skill your workforce and ensure that they have the highest levels of health and safety awareness,

then one of the best ways is through the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS), which is a colour coded card scheme. The colour of your card depends on your level of skills and health and safety knowledge. To get a Red Trainer Operator card, which will allow you on site, you have to pass a CPCS test first. To upgrade from a Red to a Blue Experienced Worker CPCS card, which is awarded to people that have the highest level of skill and knowledge, then staff need to complete a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) course like a Level 2 Plant Operations NVQ assessment. Once a worker has passed a CPCS Test to get a Red card then they can apply for a CSkills CPCS Grant to go towards an NVQ course, as long as their employer is registered with the national construction training body, CSkills, as a Levy Payer which is a tax against earnings used towards training grants. These grants range from 250, 300 and 470 per plant, depending on the size of the plant and you can apply for them through CSkills or a training provider. But there is a limit of up to two passed tests a year. Any levy paying employer can also apply for 610 per person once a worker has successfully completed a Level 2 NVQ course for a blue card. Your training provider can also get more money off, on top of these grants so it's worth asking. It's also wise to check that staff have completed and passed Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) Tests before undertaking further CPCS training. Companies try and leave these tests until the last minute as they dont want to take the team off site. This can be a costly error because, if the candidate then fails the CSCS test the they cant go on to sit the CPCS test. If you're using a training company that's flexible enough to undertake these tests at your site, completing these two test separately shouldn't be as much of an issue. Restrictions To apply for grants, the individual worker has to reside in England and the employer has to have less than 250 staff. Anyone under 24 can get more money off. But, no matter your age, if a staff member has already passed more than one Level 2 NVQ course or they are already qualified in a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 NVQ then they won't be able to claim. People forget previous qualifications or believe that they don't count if they did them years ago, but they do. It helps to ensure that your training provider does an eligibility check before applying. If the individual passes the eligibility test and all their forms are completed correctly then it's extremely likely that funding will be granted.

Gibraltar Airport

NEW GIBRALTAR AIRPORT ROCKS

Gibraltar Airport's uniquely situated new terminal building is modern, dynamic, transparent and airy. Designed by 3DReid and bblur architecture, it is a world class facility which has created opportunities for flights from Spain and the rest of Europe to Gibraltar...
Hufton & Crow

A unique and complex location The new terminal is the first building visitors will see when they enter Gibraltar by air, road or on foot and is located immediately at the frontier, with the Rock as a backdrop. Sited within an extraordinary and spectacular landscape, it is bound by very tight constraints on all sides, with the frontier with Spain to the north, the existing airport runway to the south, Winston Churchill Avenue to the west and tapering land with RAF restrictions to the east. The building is two-storeys high and covers 19,600m2. A refined and elegant design solution With over 20 years experience in aviation, the design team approached this commission with consideration and empathy, and created an Hufton & Crow important public space both around and inside the terminal. A large, over-sailing roof, providing shade and shelter to the fully glazed walls which maximise views to the Rock and across the straits toward Afric, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, reflects the terminal's aviation function and maritime location. The forecourt creates a new, landscaped park providing a generous welcome to Gibraltar and the airport and an identifiable place' at the frontier, a place to meet and greet whether on a local or extended journey. There are double height spaces within the terminal and an extensive airside roof terrace, designed as an extension to the departures lounge. The terminal, which operates over two levels with an area of 19,600m2, has a primary check-in and arrivals concourse at ground floor on the west side of the terminal. The terminal was also designed to accommodate entry and exit of passengers directly at the frontier. Key design attributes It takes advantage of fantastic views over the airfield towards the rock The dramatic roof overhang and solar shading create a building which is architecturally significant and environmentally sensitive The use of glazing achieves transparency between the interior and exterior, allows the terminal to be predominantly naturally lit and provides extensive views out of the terminal. The fifth elevation (roof) is very important as it is seen from the rock the roof lights are laid out to visually guide passengers through some of the more internal routes and generate subtle animation of the space thoughout the day, from throwing disks of diffused sunlight onto the floor, to capturing the blue glow in the early evening.

Energy efficient Energy efficiency has been a key consideration. The design incorporates a large roof overhang to provide a high level of solar shading which maintains a cool environment. High performance double glazing and automated roller blinds contribute to enhanced energy performance. Certain features of the design result from the building's proximity to the sea. In addition to the need for close attention to detailing and specifications for external elements due to the corrosive marine environment, there was also concern about maintaining the appearance of the glazing, not just from salt-saturated air but also wind-borne sand and dust particles. The design solution includes a special external cleansing system that intermittently rinses the faades to eliminate accumulated material. The de-ionised water used in the system further improves the effectiveness of the rinsing process. Buro Happold's Fire Engineering developed a holistic fire safety design that integrates a combination of passive and active fire safety measures, along with management measures which combine to give a simple but robust fire strategy for the building. This provides several benefits: Life safety protection to the large numbers of passengers and staff using the terminal; containing fire and smoke to limited areas and reducing operational disruption in the event of an incident. Team definition and roles Daniel Brub and Matthew Bedward led the 3DReid design team from concept to planning scheme design, until they left to form bblur architecture in 2008. 3DReid and bblur architecture agreed to collaborate throughout the design development and delivery phases of the project with Daniel Brub leading the project as concept guardian and lead designer working with 3DReid and the contractor to deliver the terminal and associated infrastructure. This was to ensure that Dragados S.A., the Spanish contractor who was awarded the design-build contract of the terminal and associated infrastructure works, remained faithful to the original design intent. During the course of the project delivery, bblur architecture was also commissioned to design the interior of the terminal, and to redesign the terminal forecourt and adjacent public realm with Spacehub. In addition to the main terminal building, 3DReid and bblur architecture have designed the Park & Ride facility, a six level multi-storey carpark, on the opposite side of the runway.

Choosing a garage door thats stylish and secure

When completing a housing project, choosing the right garage door may be the farthest thing from your mind. However, Simon Hipgrave, managing director of Garador argues that selecting the right garage door is paramount, not only to the security, but also the overall finish of a property...
Timber panel doors offer warmth and character

any developers understandably focus on the front door and windows when considering security. While these are undeniably crucial, it is important not to overlook the access which can be gained through the garage door. It is not only the goods within a garage which are put at risk through a lack of security. A poorly-designed or securitydeficient garage door could also provide criminals with easy access to a property. Finding the right garage door is therefore of upmost importance when securing any property against theft. In a recent survey of home owners with garage doors, 35% of respondents indicated that they use their garage as an extra living space of some kind, while nearly 50% of respondents have up to 3,000 worth of goods stored in their garage. This alone gives a good indication as to the level of security a home-owner should expect from their garage door. With around 40% of those surveyed saying that they had been the victim of a crime at some point in their lives, garage security should be a top priority when it comes to any domestic development. The UK police initiative Secured by Design (SBD) is dedicated to designing out crime in homes across the UK. Jon Cole from Secured by Design commented: Secured by Design focuses on crime prevention of homes and commercial premises, and promotes the use of security standards for a wide range of applications and products. Membership in the UK currently includes over 400 companies and Garador is proud to be the first up and over garage door manufacturer to be included in the scheme.

Garadors Guardian Range of doors have undergone rigorous tests to assure that they will stand up to the test that criminals may adopt in their attempts to break into a garage. We have always been proud of the strength and quality of our doors, but to now be able to provide a door recognised with the Secured by Design accreditation is fantastic but this accomplishment has not been achieved overnight. We have made a number of intricate adaptations to our product, to ensure that these doors meet the very strict SBD criteria and are as secure as possible. Of course security is not the only consideration when it comes to selecting the right garage door, and Simon is keen to cater for developers who are looking to improve a propertys curb-side appeal, without compromising on security. With more and more house hunters looking at photos of potential properties online, it is important for the exterior of a property to look its best. With garage doors making up around 30% of the facia of an average house, it is not something that should be overlooked when planning a project. Garador offers a range of contemporary stainless steel design doors that will set homes apart. The design range of doors includes subtle stainless steel finishes, providing a secure and ultra-stylish solution for any garage. With a range of matching front doors on offer too, Garador has created a solution to keep all entrances stylish and secure. Todays home-owners really care about the appearance of a potential property and the garage door has traditionally been plain...until now. Our Design Door range is already proving to be extremely popular as these doors can add personality and style to the exterior of any property. With the option of selecting a matching Factory interior showing Beaumont front door steel panel doors from our Frontguard range too, we can offer a stylish and secure solution f or any style of home.

omplex bi-folding external door configurations around a 90 corner or bay are becoming ever more popular in new build homes especially where a conservatory or orangery is part of the buildings design. Incorporating this more unusual feature can offer the homeowner unhindered vistas over their garden or patio when the doors are open. To achieve this feature, in-line bi-folding doors can be installed, however, if the homeowner wishes to maximise light

into their home and provide ease of operation, they can now choose an Origin 90 moving corner set to increase the glazed area. The Origin Easifold Doors can be opened around a corner of the building leaving unobstructed access to and from the interior. To install an unobstructed moving corner post configuration, the new building must incorporate a cantilevered roof support in its structural design. If this is not possible, in refurbishment projects for example, a fixed corner support post will have to be considered. Origin 90 moving corner door sets and in-line door sets suit modern house designs as their clean lines blend beautifully with the rest of the building. The new FastrackCAD/Origin database includes drawings for two to eight door bi-folding in-line configurations and six or eight door bi-folding moving corner post sets and is available on www.fastrackcad.com. GOING UP...
The new range of stainless steel Library Ladders from architectural glazing and interiors specialist D R Services helps building owners make the best use of their wall space. The new Library Ladders allow building users to install floor-to-ceiling bookshelves or general storage and access them safely and easily. Full-height shelving is becoming increasingly popular as people seek better use of the available space. Julie Jarvis, director of D R Services says that the new, German-made ladders fill a niche in the market: No-one else satisfies this market requirement and there are a lot of large residential houses, libraries and shops that need to use the entire volume of the building rather than just the footprint space, she said.

A FIRST FROM AERECO

Aereco has launched the fully demand controlled MVHR system, the DXR. It is said to be the first ever fully DC domestic MVHR system both on supply and exhaust to be developed. Aereco says its new DXR system can achieve 92% energy savings compared with a mechanical exhaust ventilation (MEV) system at constant airflow, while providing the same indoor air quality. Aereco DXR is engineered to automatically adjust ventilation according to the specific needs of each room when other products in the market propose constant or globally controlled airflows. Aereco DXR combines the benefits of both airflow modulation and heat recovery. Modulation enables a significant reduction of the average airflows while providing excellent air quality. Heat losses on average are halved in comparison with a constant airflow ventilation system.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

GEZE UK has launched a new CPD seminar titled Designing Effective Heat and Smoke Ventilation at the RIBA Roadshow in Portland Place, London. Offering chartered architects invaluable advice and guidance, which contributes to their continuing professional development, the new training seminar gives architects the confidence and knowledge to specify fire and smoke ventilation systems in residential and commercial properties. The seminar covers all the relevant standards and regulations including Approved Document B, BS 9999:2008, BS 9991 and BS EN 12101. By outlining the factors affecting the choice of ventilation systems and explaining how ventilation systems for smoke and heat extraction work, the seminar will show how to make the correct calculations and select the best equipment and system for both the location and application. Operations director Simon Bowden said: This seminar is designed to show architects how effective smoke ventilation and great design can go hand-in-hand to improve life safety. Different window configurations can affect how much smoke is removed, so were hoping to provide an insight into how the ideal design can be calculated and which factors need to be considered when specifying.

REVERSIBLE SYSTEM
The Litchfield Group has launched a high performance reversible window profile series, with a 0.8W/m2K U-value. The Sheerframe 8000 Reversible offers thermal performance and energy efficiency. The windows are compatible with all levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes and provide an easy solution for meeting Part B of Building Regulations for escaping and evacuating, thanks to its efficient reversible operating system. Featuring a highly efficient, fivechambered profile system for improved insulation and strength, the PVC profiles minimise heat loss through the frame.

prepared with a Bartec parallelthread. Unlike re-bend systems where bar length, spacing and diameter are restricted by physical box dimensions, KSN Anchors provide total design flexibility. The KSN system easily accommodates the longer lap lengths now required by Eurocode 2 and a standard timber carrier allows multiple anchors to be installed simultaneously, at the designed spacing.

Specifying stone... NATURALLY

Horsham Stone & Reclamations Simon Stainer explains why natural stone is enjoying a resurgence and looks at the benefits it can bring to both outdoor and indoor projects...

hen the fashion became to install an outdoor decking area in a garden, the use of natural stone fell quite considerably. But, as with every five minutes of fashion fame, the old guard is fighting back and enjoying a resurgence. More and more people are beginning to realise that the timeless elegance of stone far outweighs the here and now of decking. The maintenance headache is not a factor either, with natural stone being relatively maintenance-free, just requiring a jet wash every so often. But it is not just the convenience aspect that is making natural stone a popular choice again. Stone expert, Simon Stainer, director of Sussex-based Horsham Stone & Reclamation looks at the various benefits that including natural stone in an outdoor area can bring. Laying a natural stone patio has a number of practical benefits such as its durability and versatility, lasting much longer than decking and being able to endure a lot of wear and tear. Add in the fact that it will look beautiful from day one, it does not need a sealant and is extremely resilient to harsh weather conditions, and it is easy to see why its in demand again. The versatility of stone means that once it is quarried it can be cut to many different shapes and sizes, so whether it is being used for a small courtyard, or an area in sprawling acres, it does offer the opportunity to create a truly one-off space.

This also means that it can not only be used to create a traditional English country garden, but also a minimalist area where the stone is carved to create one-off individual sculptures. The many different tones and colours that different types of stone bring also add to the individuality. As natural stone gradually weathers, the colours are constantly changing, which adds to the uniqueness of the area. Take Horsham stone for example, ripple marks occur on the top of the sandstone beds that weather into a range of beautiful yellows, browns and blues. Or, with the increasingly popular Indian Sandstone, people can choose from a wide variety of colours from the traditional grey, to the multi coloured rainbow. Then there is also the eco-friendliness. Natural stone is a material that is perhaps not top of the list when people think of green building products, tending to see it in a similar vein to concrete, but, as consumers, architects, builders and developers are looking to use more sustainable products, natural stone is also becoming the preference for those wishing to lead a more eco-friendly life. With the ease of maintenance, longevity of the material and the velocity at which it is naturally produced compared to the rate of use by mankind, it is one of the most sustainable products on the market. Additionally, when used correctly in the construction of a building, the thermal mass of stone makes it a great choice to help reduce the amount

of energy needed to heat a building, an excellent advantage as money saving is also high on many agendas. When a stone wall is included on the sunny side of a structure, it will store the heat and release it slowly over a period of time, helping to retain heat in colder weather and vice versa. Add in the factor of shopping locally, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the distance that the stone has to travel, and natural stone opens up to a whole new audience. Large, big named DIY stores will have a number of samples which may have been imported from overseas. But by going to your local stone yard, the product will have been quarried only a few miles away, severely cutting down on the carbon footprint. You are also buying something that is truly local. Furthermore, and something which is very popular with Horsham Stone customers, is the fact that, at a stone yard you will be able to pick out certain pieces, which can really add character as no two pieces are the same. As the way we use our homes is changing, a stone floor is also increasingly being used to make an indoor/outdoor room. Stone is perhaps the only material that can successfully create the seamless connection between an indoor and outdoor

space, in particular limestone as it is suitable for both uses. But, with all the different types of stone available, how do people know what to choose? Speaking to a stone expert about a project, no matter how big or small, at a local stone yard will certainly help. But generally, Sawn Indian sandstones and Granite work well for a contemporary look because of their clean and smooth finish, whereas reclaimed Yorkstone and Horsham Stone flagstones work well for period properties. For pathways and cottage patios, we would always recommend crazy paving as it has a lot of character, and then for something really special, Tumbled Indian Sandstone for use around swimming pools, as the tumbled effect gives a softer feel underfoot. There are a number of other cheaper materials on the market that will create a nice looking patio area, but I honestly believe that for longevity and a truly beautiful space, you cant beat the stunning look of natural stone.

OPTIMUM CONDITION
Osmo UK, the eco-friendly wood and finishes expert, has developed a finish to protect, maintain and restore exterior oak furnishings. Oak UVProtection-Oil will rejuvenate the wood, leaving it looking in top condition for the upcoming summer months. Osmo Oak UVProtection-Oil consists of natural ingredients to eliminate algae and fungal decay and provide optimal protection against the sun. By absorbing into the oak, the oil allows the surface to remain healthy and elastic, preventing it from drying and becoming brittle, and will not crack, flake, peel or blister. Suitable for cladding, windows and doors, it provides a satinmatt, clear finish that not only protects the wood surface but also enhances the natural look of the wood. Exterior wood has to withstand harsh weathering conditions throughout the winter months and often leaves the material looking grey and tired, explained Steve Grimwood, Osmo UKs MD. Oak UV-Protection-Oil strengthens the wood from within, allowing it to breathe and moisture to evaporate ensuring a flawless finish.

PEDESTALS INSTALLED AT EXCEL

Having supplied the original screw-jack pedestals that support the raised access paving at the entrance to ExCeL London, Buzon UK has recently delivered a further consignment to the international exhibition and convention centre, as the paving has been relaid to create a new look. In total, Buzon UK has supplied 15,000 adjustable, freestanding screw-jack pedestals for the ExCeL project and they now carry some 2,500m of granite paving. When the paving was relaid, all the existing pedestals were reused and additional units were only ordered because the new paving tiles are smaller than the originals so extra supports were required. Buzons pedestal range is used on prestigious architectural projects throughout the world to deliver outstanding functionality and cost performance. Designed to create raised access external and internal floors, the pedestals are corrosion and damp proof. They are manufactured from 80% recycled and 100% recyclable polypropylene to offer an eco-friendly solution along with providing durability, stability and strength. Mike Wilderink, MD of Buzon UK, commented: Buzon UKs pedestals are designed to support up to a two-tonne load per unit, so are ideal for this application and offer proven performance.

Townscapes double stacking racks are made from galvanised steel, with a security locking loop and are developed in a low maintenance finish.

CAR PARK RECLAIMED THANKS TO TREMCO

Car parking beneath offices belonging to the Business Innovation and Skills Department has been resurfaced using Tremco illbrucks MMA Rapid Cure system, selected to address problems of water ingress that had forced sections of the underground facility to be cordoned off. The premises in Grosvenor Road, St Albans, featured a ground level asphalt parking area, mainly laid out beneath the office building itself. Unfortunately, water carried into the covered area was finding its way through the asphalt and the structural concrete deck and dripping onto bay areas beneath. In total, 1,000m2 of Tremco MMA Rapid Cure Flexible System was laid over the ageing asphalt, with a further 2,600m2 of the MMA Internal System being applied to the concrete BZ240 decks of the sub-structure.

Dont be LED astray

LED Eco Lights cofounder, Saima Shafi, offers some advice on what to look for when choosing a supplier of LED lamps and luminaries...
Lighting the way LED shines above other bulb types

To help you decide what to look for in a reliable LED supplier, here is a ten-point LED buyers checklist based on background, quality, performance and price: 1. Be responsible: Put Health & Safety first and insist on CE and RoHS-certified products only. Using non-compliant CE and RoHS products is also against the law; products lacking a CE mark have not passed basic electrical testing and could pose serious electrical hazards during installation and use. You can request to see copies of certificates for due diligence and your supplier should be able to provide copies on request. 2. Ensure that you are using a supplier who is WEEE compliant: If not, the products are illegal. WEEE regulations require electrical waste to be disposed of properly and safely. With todays numerous recycling schemes, it is easy to comply and there is no acceptable excuse for non-compliance. Your supplier should have its WEEE membership details to hand. 3. Protect your investment and future-proof your purchase: Conduct a background check on potential suppliers. A basic credit check and a look at their trading history will provide valuable information on financial standing and past performance. It can also be important if you need to make a warranty-based claim later on or if you are anticipating a long-term supply contract. 4. Look for a proven track record: Ask for feedback and references from previous customers on performance and service, something a good supplier will happily provide. Also, ask if you can try before you buy a reputable company will allow you to trial products, either free-of-charge or on saleor-return. Remember to take lux readings before and after to ensure the product is fit-for-purpose.

eplacing energy-hungry conventional lamps with LED equivalents makes economic and environmental sense. LED lighting products are energy efficient and cost-effective with ultra long life spans compared to traditional units. Therefore, making the decision to change should be an easy one. Choosing a supplier, however, may not be quite so straightforward, especially with no formal performance standards to measure against. It is very easy to fall in to the trap of purchasing based on grand claims rather than actual performance. Also, the variance in products and performance on offer is so wide that choosing the right product and the right supplier can be a minefield.

5. Quality of data: Do not rely on grand claims; ask to see data on product performance where you can see evidence of power consumption, light output, installation guides, etc. 6. Quality of manufacture: Make sure the product is mechanically sound. If you can hear a rattle when you shake it, thats not a good sign! Check that the body is robust and durable and, if relevant, check its IP rating. Also, enquire about stock availability continuity of supply is essential and suppliers quoting six to eight weeks for stock should probably be avoided. Leading, reputable suppliers will hold sufficient stock to cater for their customers ongoing and urgent needs.

Lighting & Electrics

7. Technical support: How well does the supplier understand the new technology? Buy from an LED lighting specialist, someone who understands the challenges you face when lighting your premises and has experience of delivering LED installations of a similar style and size. 8. After-sales service: Does your supplier offer a guarantee and, if so, for how long? LED lighting products offer an ultra-long lifespan, so guarantees should reflect this. A confident manufacturer will provide at least three years and should be able to support the warranty period with proof of live installations that have performed reliably for similar periods of time. 9. Supplier credibility: Know with whom you are dealing. Manufacturers develop and produce product, and invest heavily in R&D. Their engineers work within existing parameters of LED technology. Installers may not understand component configurations in detail, and elements that can alter performance often rely on specialised electronics. 10. And finally: Only when you are satisfied with everything else, look at pricing: If products seem too cheap, there will be reasons. These could include poor quality components and sub-standard manufacturing techniques. Low quality LEDs will cause problems such as inadequate light performance, while poorly assembled products can pose serious installation and safety hazards. Other common problems include unreliability (i.e. colourshifting after use), rapid degradation of light output, plus high failures in large quantities and quality of light output not fit-forpurpose. Furthermore, these and other issues are frequently exacerbated by poor or non-existent after sales support. You do need to be confident that, in the event of a problem, your supplier will rectify it fast, effectively and efficiently. Beware of cheap, inferior products provided by unscrupulous suppliers. Remember; in common with all quality products, if the price youre being quoted for LED lamps and luminaries seems too cheap to be true, ask yourself why. They will inevitably cost you more in the long run, once problems start appearing. LED offers a number of significant benefits, including drastic CO2 and running cost reduction, lower maintenance, long lifespan and instant switch-on. Another bonus is that the retrofitting options offered by manufacturers such as LED Eco Lights means products fit straight into existing fittings, thereby drastically reducing the scale of the installation as well as the cost.

Healthy first impression

Mark Hammond of Record UK examines the diverse door system solutions required by modern-day medical facilities...
ith their multidimensional daily routines of providing patients with consultations, specialist procedures, care on the wards and pharmaceutical dispensing, as well as access for relatives and a host of supply partners, the modern hospital presents one of the most complex working and temporary residential environments it is possible to conceive. As well as caring for some of the most vulnerable groups in society, hospitals are also often the focus for teaching and scientific research, while providing so called hotel services for hundreds of patients. Accordingly, those responsible for the design of such premises must take into account such factors as safe access, circulation, way-finding, security, emergency egress, the creation of sterile areas, and even the confinement of hazardous materials including radiation into their calculations.

It also follows that the specification of the door systems to be installed will be strongly influenced by all of these factors, as well as the normal criteria for capital expenditure such as quality, appearance, maintenance implications and whole-life cost. Multiple door types with different modes of opening and diverse constructions are therefore going to be required, even within smaller units, including residential care homes, doctors surgeries and dedicated clinics. It is preferable, if not imperative, that the architect and other members of the delivery team engage with a major manufacturer having both the expertise and the capacity to fulfil a contracts requirements as early as possible in the design process. In this way, all relevant requirements both operational and in terms of creating a comfortable environment for staff and patients alike can be met. Increasingly, door automation is seen as appropriate to the healthcare environment, whether it is to deal with very high

levels of pedestrian traffic, such as at main entrances to the wards, A&E, and other departments, or to ensure spaces like theatres (and their staff) can maintain sterility. The front or main entrance to the modern hospital offers both user groups and inspectors an important first impression of the building, while also allowing the specifier to make a strong visual statement. Furthermore, due to footfall, it may also be deemed important to emphasise energy saving in the specification. For these reasons, circular and inward or outward curved door installations are proving increasingly popular for providing direct access or forming a dedicated lobby space. A second curved or a linear sliding door can be mounted behind the outer one to create an effective windscreen. A revolving door, meanwhile, represents the ultimate in terms of preventing heat loss, or noise entering, and does so in dramatic style. Angular sliding doors, installed as two-leaf or four-leaf options are also available to match modern styles of architecture, and to make the most of corner entrances. Elsewhere around the building perimeter, there may be the call for a staff entrance with a security interlock system, possibly allowing individuals to identify themselves using a key pad or proximity reader for ID cards. Then, during daily working activities, personnel may need to be provided with rapid roll shutters to allow access to delivery ramps, or even emergency entrance doors where paramedics bring their vehicles as close as possible to the Accident & Emergency area. Following their admission by whichever route, patients will

undergo triage, preparation for elective surgery, or simply routine consultations that see them pass through a series of internal doors of different type and purpose. While a suite of consulting rooms might be reached through a multi-leaf telescopic door, the X-RAY department should be shielded by a radiation-proof door; and when they reach the pharmacy, it is prudent to have the valuable and potentially dangerous contents protected by a burglar-proof entranceway. Many medical facilities built in recent years have, of course, been procured under the PFI initiative and, in such situations, the developer involved will normally have examined the availability of maintenance contracts along with the purchase cost. Where NHS trusts are negotiating their own contracts, the capital works department generally leaves it to estates management to organize the service arrangements. In such circumstances it is recommended that the estates officer, or facilities manager, engages with a reputable and flexible company which is able to offer maintenance agreements for not only its own doors systems and door operators, but also those made by other manufacturers. As part of an internationally recognised group with half a century of experience in door production, Record UK promotes the ethos of repair over replacement, wherever possible, in order to optimise life-cycle and sustainability; while offering the widest possible choice of door systems for new build and refurbishment projects.

NEW HOSPITAL TAP

Pegler Yorkshire is leading the way for all manufacturers to improve designs of mixer taps suitable for the healthcare environment. An investigation by the HPA found that as water is not sterile within a plumbing system; water borne micro-organisms are capable of forming a biofilm which is known to be more resistant to disinfectants than floating water borne micro-organisms. To reduce the possibility of theses biofilms harbouring pathogens which can become responsible for hospital infections, a key recommendation has been made by the HPA to remove the rosette or flow straightener from within the tap outlet. The engineering behind the Pegler Yorkshire Performa hospital mixer tap range focuses on the internal profile which funnels the water into the basin and reduces the risk of splashing.

96% CLEANER
Research by LST radiator specialist, Contour Casings, is beginning to shed light on the levels of potentially harmful bacteria that could be present inside radiator guards located in a healthcare environment. In a comparative study at an NHS Trust Hospital in the South of England, it was discovered that there could potentially be 682,000 bacteria colonies present inside a single radiator guard that has no internal access for cleaning or antimicrobial protection. Numerous swabs were taken from various guard locations; this figure was then extrapolated out to reflect an average-sized radiator guard. Based on this study, an average hospital ward or corridor containing 40 traditional fixed radiator guards could contain in excess of five million potentially harmful bacteria colonies. The diversity of the bacteria discovered was also a revealing insight, with over 10,450 different bacteria types identified. When the results of the traditional radiator guard were compared with the same number of swabs taken from a range of modern LST radiator guards in this case the Trionic DeepClean guard from Contour Casings, which has full internal access for cleaning and inherent antimicrobial technology the difference was striking. The DeepClean guard contained 96% fewer bacterial colonies overall than the traditional guard and there were also 74% fewer bacteria types. Radiator guard designs such as those developed by Contour Casings, now feature a full-access front door, which allows one cleaning operative fast and simple access to every internal surface without assistance from estates. The DeepClean guard includes BioCote antimicrobial technology in its paintwork, reducing levels of harmful bacteria such as MRSA and E.coli by up to 99.99% in less than two hours.

Innovative ceiling cooling solutions are on the up

Mike lamb, managing director of surface heating and cooling specialist, Warmafloor, looks at ceiling cooling systems as a means of improving energy efficiency, reducing waste and, ultimately, future proofing buildings such as notoriously challenging educational facilities...

he construction industry is under pressure to create more sustainable lifetime buildings, with the 2008 Climate Change Act stipulating that all UK organisations have to make carbon emission reductions of at least 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050, against 1990 levels. Responsible for an increasing amount of carbon dioxide emissions 2.4m tonnes in 1990 and 3.3m tonnes in 2006 the higher education sector is under pressure to improve. The Government has tried to play its part. Its Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme provides financial incentives for such institutions to reduce emissions and invest in energy saving measures but, in spite of this, a recent report has revealed that carbon emissions at many of the UKs universities rose by as much as 3.9% between 2005 and 2010. The need for change is clear and the time to act is now. With architects creating ever more complex modern buildings, the construction industry needs to think creatively as to how green technologies can be used to the best of their ability and ensure that sustainable buildings can perform as intended. Energy management in large educational facilities can be notoriously difficult as the mix of multi-purpose rooms, high ceiling spaces and differing user demands and schedules makes predicting and then maintaining a consistent energy consumption level a real challenge. This is a challenge that we can no longer ignore. Predictions indicate that the average UK temperature could

rise by as much as 8C in the next century, so the energy consumption and conditioning of our buildings is ever more important. This means that the role of cooling and ventilation is allocated a higher profile in commercial, industrial and residential design briefs. With the ability to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste, ceiling cooling systems have the potential to unlock significant savings and serve as an example of the intelligent and innovative design needed to future proof our buildings.
Absorbing excess energy

Ceiling cooling, utilising embedded coil technology, helps reduce the reliance on air conditioning systems in a building. It works by absorbing the heat energy from the room into the ceiling coils embedded into the structural ceiling beams and then rejecting it, via the plate heat exchanger, to thermal piles, slinkies or ground loops. There is also the potential for heat to be ejected into large water courses, for example landscaped ponds or lakes. The energy that is absorbed not only comes from the sensible internal gains within the space from occupants, but also from solar gains through windows and heat from in-room equipment such as computers, TVs and audio equipment. This energy is absorbed into the ceiling panels (which have embedded 20mm diameter polybutylene pipes circulating cool water) and then rejected from the building. Typically embedded in concrete structural ceiling beams, which have a high thermal mass, ceiling cooling systems deliver an excellent

thermal performance with U-values as low as 0.12W/m2K. This process of high temperature cooling, with injection temperatures in cooling mode of around 14C, is the most efficient method of maintaining a comfortable environment for building users throughout the year. Such efficiency is vital in helping to reduce the carbon footprint of our buildings and preventing energy waste. As energy in our bodies will migrate to the nearest and coolest surface area, buildings with ceiling cooling systems draw occupants body heat upwards and thus are able to make them feel cooler and more comfortable in a short space of time. The overhead absorption of energy throughout the room also brings health benefits, reducing draughts and the circulation of dust particles in the airs convection currents. This provides a cleaner quality of air without noise, thus reducing the symptoms of Sick Building Syndrome. The overhead positioning of ceiling systems also enhances their long-life durability. Safely protected by the ceiling paneling, the system is not vulnerable to tampering and thus requires minimal repair work. The pipework comes with a 100-year guarantee ten times longer than steel and copper radiator pipes. The fact that there are no joints and the pipes will never corrode means that maintenance costs over the lifetime of the building can be kept to a minimum. This is a particularly significant benefit in light of the higher education sectors long backlog of maintenance repair costs, which amount to millions of pounds.
Surface cooling in practice Manchester Metropolitan University

Energy efficiency was the order of the day at Manchester Metropolitan Universitys (MMU) 20,000m2 Birley Fields Academic Building, where Warmafloor was commissioned to install its ceiling cooling system as a means of keeping energy costs and carbon emissions to a minimum. Due to open in September 2014, the brand new, 15-acre Birley Fields campus is the final part of the 350m investment in new facilities for MMU. The university has already committed to cutting carbon emissions and, over the last 12 months, has reduced the carbon footprint of each of its students by 5.5%. Over 139m has been invested in the campus to help make further reductions, with the aim of lowering the carbon footprint of existing campus operations by 60% and working towards a zero carbon, zero water and zero waste campus. Bearing the burden of responsibility for the training and development of our future leaders, universities have a duty to provide a comfortable, healthy and safe environment for
Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU)

students. Warmafloor was therefore commissioned to design a bespoke ceiling cooling system to deliver optimum comfort as well as meet the stringent cost and energy saving targets. In order to achieve this, Warmafloor worked in close collaboration with Creagh Concrete to embed its system into pre-cast concrete panels, in a new arrangement to boost efficiency across the building. Quality is of the utmost importance in any building project and the ceiling panelling is manufactured in a controlled environment off-site, making it easier to monitor the mix, placement of the coils and curing, thus guaranteeing the quality of the finished cast. This indoor controlled process also removes the challenge of installing coils and pouring concrete in poor weather, which can affect the concentration of the precast mix and the method by which it is installed, as well as add weeks on to project completion deadlines. Another advantage of controlled conditions is that it enhances the concrete durability, ensuring that it is able to withstand heavy imposed structural loads. The cooling coils are also fully protected because they are embedded into the ceiling panels. Ready for immediate installation, the panels could quickly be installed in the Academic Building, resulting in a shorter project build time and lower labour costs. Finally, the system of ceiling cooling coils embedded into the concrete panels, was the ideal design partner for the Academic Building, providing a fair faced concrete finish in line with the buildings modern architectural style. Forming part of the universitys Estates Investment Strategy, the Academic Building is designed to meet a BREEAM Excellent rating, continuing the universitys heritage of environmental responsibility. Last year, MMU received a 1st Class certification in the People & Planet Green League.

UZIN Turbolight system used at The Southend Casino.

The UZIN Turbolight system was used to install 1250 m2 of flooring at Southend Casino, Essex. Polished Concrete Designs Ltd choose the Turbolight System to rapidly create a lightweight floor to reduce weight difficulties within the buildings structure. The numerous levels and the varying condition of the substrate dictated the need for a product that could cope with all the variants, carry good point loads and gave the client a billiard table finish. Due to the buildings structural restrictions a normal concrete screed would have been too heavy and could only have possession of 20% of the area at any one time. The solution to each of these required parameters existed within the UZIN product range. After the initial visit from the UZIN Technical team, a specification was formulated between Polished Concrete designs and UZIN which resulted in the supply and install of the floor. The unique combination of individual components, comprising of UZIN NC 194 Turbo, UZIN RR 201 and UZIN NC 195 allowed a sound and level floor to be created even on the problematic substrate. After cleaning the substrate, Polished Concrete Designs Ltd first applied a DPM as a sandwich membrane between the base concrete and the screed. UZIN NC 194 Turbo screed was then pumped to a depth of 50 mm, before the UZIN RR 201 reinforcement mesh was installed on the surface. Finally UZIN NC 195, bonded cement leveling compound was applied at a thickness of 10 mm. The new floor was then exceptionally well finished.

Recognising the potential for a more modern alternative, building product specialist Timloc has launched its latest range of beaded access panels designed especially to offer builders and contractors an attractive, robust and cost effective alternative to costly, dated Plasterboard faced products. Designed for use in dry lined walls and ceilings that are pre plaster skimmed, Timloc beaded access panels consist of a metal-faced door skin with a smooth powder coated finish to facilitate overpainting. The door skin is inserted into a perforated frame that creates a good plaster key and leaves a plaster-beaded edge around the door aperture. The result is a concealed access door with no visible frame, superior aesthetic appearance and quality finish. The panels have a fully removable door for ease of installation. The quick release hinge allows easy access and can also be positioned to open left or right handed. Fire-rated and non fire-rated versions are available.

Phil Harvey, Director of Technical Services at Timloc, comments: Whilst plasterboard faced access panels are still in common use, the new Timloc beaded range offers so many advantages in comparison. Plasterboard faced hatches and doors can be expensive and are prone to cracking and crumbling during transit, storage, installation and regular use. Doors requiring plaster skim finish also need preparation to prevent locks, hinges and tolerance gaps becoming blocked and are difficult to finish to a high standard. Its also worth remembering that having an access door/hatch finished

with plasterboard alone, will not make the product fire-rated, he adds. In line with Part J of the Building Regulations, Timlocs fire-rated and nonfire rated beaded panel ranges also help meet the new gas safety industry requirements for concealed boiler flue inspection access. The fire-rated panels are also draught stripped and insulated which means they dont compromise the acoustic integrity of the wall, thereby meeting Part E of the Building Regulations. Furthermore, unlike plasterboard faced panels, which, if damaged, require a complete and often costly, replacement, Timloc panels can be transported safely and easily, but if any damage is sustained, they can be filled much more cost effectively - in a similar way to car body repairs. In situ, the beaded panels retain their aesthetics for much longer than plasterboard which can tend to age quickly after installation.

Sustainability & Eco Solutions

Demonstrating sustainability
Terra Therma discusses the idea behind a new Eco House in East Anglia which is helping contractors, architects and students alike to understand and appreciate the new technologies now available...

or many of us, renewable energy solutions and the latest technologies available are unfamiliar territory, but they are increasingly hot topics of conversation. With the unusual, and somewhat unprecedented weather conditions across the globe, the worlds leaders are trying to encourage everyone to lower their carbon footprints. This is especially true in Britain where the Government has launched initiatives offering financial incentives to encourage 15% of the UKs energy to be generated from renewable sources by 2020. With this in mind, a new demonstration Eco House, the first of its kind in East Anglia, has been opened and is helping contractors, architects and students get to grips with the most cutting-edge, eco-friendly technologies that are on the market. The two-storey Eco House in Maldon, Essex, shows interactive working examples of the latest innovations in renewable heating systems ahead of the launch of Government initiatives, which will offer generous grants and subsidies for property developments and commercial projects over a period of up to 20 years. It is hoped those who are designing, developing and building new premises will gain inspiration from seeing and hearing the latest developments in glazing, lighting, dry screed flooring systems, air-to-water heat pumps and underfloor heating. A variety of ecofriendly insulation types are also on display, including lambs wool, hemp and recycled plastic bottles. The Eco House was created by renewable energy specialist Terra Therma, in response to the

many frequently-recurring questions posed by builders, architects and commercial developers considering implementing these new technologies. Dimensions, aesthetics, noise levels and speed of operation are some of the most common areas of concern but, at the demonstration Eco House, visitors can see and hear working examples (including inner workings) for themselves, giving them a real feel for how the products perform in a realistic setting. Cliff Arnold, general manager of CTC, the renewables division of Enertech who visited the Eco House said: The Scandinavians have been using this type of renewable energy for years but here, in this country, we are only just beginning to catch on. He anticipated that sustainable eco systems will become increasingly popular with more architects and developers incorporating them into their designs as the benefits become more widely known, and, in turn, higher demand is likely to bring the costs down. Among the numerous guests who attended the official opening of the demonstration Eco House were architects, contractors, John Whittingdale MP and lecturers from Chelmsford College which runs BTEC Diploma courses in Construction. Were learning lots about underfloor heating and new technology which draws heat from the ground to make central heating and we will pass this on to our students who are likely to want to come to see how this technology works for themselves, said one lecturer. The Eco House demonstrates how air

source heat pumps offer an extremely high efficient solution for space heating and hot water generation. They work by absorbing and moving energy from the ambient air outside and amplifying the temperature by compression, for use in the home or office. A total of 75% of an air source heat pumps energy comes from the external environment. This can offer consumers impressive output energy performance and a reduction of their fuel consumption by up to 75%. Ground source pumps also offer great benefits for heating and hot water generation. They work by absorbing and moving energy from the ground, borehole or water source and amplifying the temperature by compression. Ground source pumps also offer impressive output energy performance, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 75%. To ensure the UKs targets to reduce carbon emissions are met, a total of 860m in central Government funding has been made available to finance the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) over the next three years. The Government wants to help householders, communities and businesses replace their existing fossil fuel-based heating systems with renewable heat sources. The scheme is being administered by the energy regulator Ofgem. Working in a similar way to the Feed-in-Tariff for Solar Photovoltaic (Solar PV) systems, owners of heat pumps will be paid for every unit of heat generated by their renewable energy heating systems. RHI payments will be made on the basis of deemed heat and will be made quarterly over a seven-year period. Currently, RHI payments in the UK are only available for commercial installations. However, phase two of the RHI scheme will offer payments for the domestic sector from spring 2014 and the good news is that all solar thermal and heat pump installations since 15 July 2009 may be eligible for RHI payments. A visit to the Eco House is a great opportunity for architects, developers and students to get a real feel for how this technology works, said Sean Casey, director of Terra Therma, the company behind the innovation. We are passionate about sustainable energy and designed the Eco House with working models so people could come along to experience exactly what renewable technology can do and how it can potentially work in their own projects. Visitors will be able to see and hear for themselves how highly performing and affordable the latest advances in airto-water heat pumps and ground pumps really are. Our Eco House shows the inner workings of these systems, and visitors can view real time thermal readings and even have a go at fitting some underfloor heating. At the same time, our on-site renewable energy experts can provide detailed information on the Renewable Heat Incentive and how it can benefit both domestic and commercial developments. Private visits and group tours of the Eco House are available by appointment.

ECO ROOFS PROJECT

New Charter Homes, a Greater Manchester housing organisation, has re-roofed 1,000 properties with Marley Eternits pollution busting EcoLogic tiles over the past four years, as part of an ongoing planned roofing replacement programme. Not only does the EcoLogic tile offer excellent sustainability credentials, with almost 50% recycled content, but its use is making an important contribution to improving the environmental health of Tameside residents. The tile has a pollution-eating coating that absorbs Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) pollutants and converts them into soluble nitrates that are washed away harmlessly with rainwater. Most recently, New Charter Homes has been using a new and improved version of the EcoLogic tile in Nimbus Grey, a rich greyblue colour which gives a closer match to the natural slate often seen on existing roofs in the Tameside area.

MINIMISING HEAT LOSS

Phase two of Horton Halls, a 7.6m student accommodation for St Georges, University of London, is well on its way to achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating thanks to Eco-Bond, part of EcoTherms range of flat-roof PIR insulation products. To help minimise heat loss from the accommodations roof, project supplier, Flag Soprema specified EcoTherms Eco-Bond. Eco-Bond is a rigid polyisocyanurate foam insulation with mineral coated glass fibre tissue on both faces and is designed for use with either fully bonded or mechanically fixed single-ply membrane systems. The product helped to achieve a whole roof U-value of 0.11 W/m2.K on the phase two building. As a PIR insulation product, Eco-Bond, is able to achieve high levels of thermal performance with much lesser thicknesses than would be needed with traditional mineral fibre insulation, making it lighter and less bulky for installers.

GREEN ROOFING RELAUNCH

Sika Sarnafil has re-launched its green roofing offering with a fully-branded system backed by a comprehensive guarantee. Marrying its single ply membrane with a full range of green roof options, the Sarnavert system is already a popular choice. But the offering is now fully branded, meaning all components of a green roof are protected by Sika Sarnafils guarantee (providing the appropriate maintenance programme is in place). Sika Sarnafils national sales manager, Rod Benson commented: Weve found that many green roofs are inadequately protected. A common issue is that, while the waterproof base might be guaranteed, end-customers usually have to shoulder the costs if the planting dies. Thats why were proud to have redressed this problem by offering customers a complete product package thats backed by our leading guarantee.

BZ285

SUSTAIN AWARD
New from Aereco is the fully demand controlled MVHR system, the DXR. It is said to be the first ever fully DC domestic MVHR system both on supply and exhaust to be developed. Aereco says its new DXR system can achieve 92% energy savings compared with a mechanical exhaust ventilation (MEV) system at constant airflow, while providing the same indoor air quality. Aereco DXR is engineered to automatically adjust ventilation according to the specific needs of each room when other products on the market propose constant or globally controlled airflows. Aereco DXR combines the benefits of both airflow modulation and heat recovery. Modulation enables a significant reduction of the average airflows while providing excellent air quality. Heat losses on average are halved in comparison with a constant airflow ventilation system. The heat exchanger operates with a yield of around 85% recovery thereby achieving in the region of 92% energy savings compared with a MEV system. Additionally, Aereco DXR enhances primary energy consumption by reducing fan power. Another major benefit of the Aereco DXR is that filters stay cleaner longer, resulting in less power consumption. Jewson has won the Award for Energy at the Sustain Awards for its new web-based gas control system, which has allowed the company to significantly reduce energy use across its sites. Rod Leigh, director for sustainability at Jewson commented: The implementation of our new, web-based gas control system is the latest in a long line of initiatives designed to help us reduce our environmental impact. The web-based gas control system monitors external and internal temperatures and controls all aspects of our in-branch heating systems, meaning that all of our sites are now visible and adjustable enabling us to significantly reduce our energy costs.

Internorm, which offers nine Passivhaus-certified window and door systems, provided its HV240 range to complete the project. The triple glazed, timber-aluminium windows come in a range of colour finishes and actively maximise energy gain. While minimising thermal losses, the windows are also designed to optimise thermal gain and achieve Ug values of up to 0.5W/m2K, in comparison to conventional double glazed windows that often lie around 1.4W/m2K.

WIENERBERGER RESPONDS TO WOOD FIRST EVENT

Wienerberger has issued a response to the recent UK Green Building Councils Wood First debate. The discussion focused on the Wood First policy implemented (and since retracted) by Hackney Council, and covered the sustainability implications of various building materials and the role of the planner in specifying materials. Having attended the debate, Annette Forster, director of marketing at Wienerberger, commented: Its good that the UK Green Building Council is encouraging debate in relation to the sustainability merits of various construction methods and materials. However, on this occasion we felt that masonry was under-represented, which had the effect of skewing the parameters of the discussion. With no-one on the panel with a significant background in that area of construction, it meant that it was difficult to create a genuine balance and comparison between the merits of timber cladding or timber frame construction and that of bricks or other materials.

REDUCING ENERGY
The University of Liverpool Sports and Fitness Centre pool has been transformed by using Kalwall to replace the existing single glazed bolted glass assembly. The Kalwall not only reduces the amount of energy needed to warm the pool in winter, while keeping it cool in summer, but also provides privacy. A new, false ceiling above the pool and the installation of an energy efficient mechanical plant also make carbon savings. Importantly, the translucent system transmits diffused natural daylight into the pool area without the glare and stark contrasts of light and shade produced by conventional glazing.

The affordable, one-day course is available in two centres, one in Barnsley and one in Dartford. It is aimed at existing dry-wall contractors or plasterers with at least two years experience, who are looking to gain Green Deal or ECO work. Using Kingspan Kooltherm Internal Wall Insulation Systems, trainees will learn the best practice approach to dealing with everyday refurbishment installation issues.

WARM WALL ENHANCES ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Knauf Marmorits external wall insulation with a smart, low maintenance mineral finish render is enhancing the energy efficiency and external appearance of over 200 homes in the Castlefields area of Runcorn. Terraced housing with outdated plastic cladding and painted concrete exteriors is being upgraded with around 20,000m2 of Mamorits Warm Wall Basis, a cost-effective solid wall insulation system which cuts energy costs by reducing heat loss through the external faade. An attractive, long lasting external finish is provided by Marmorits Noblo marble-aggregate finish render. Given Castlefields proximity to an industrial estate and resulting air pollution, which had deteriorated the original faades, the render surface is coated with a silicon self-cleaning effect paint. This greatly reduces the adherence of dust and dirt particles, so the surfaces will stay cleaner for longer with minimal maintenance.

Fire, Safety & Security

No fire without smoke

Michael Sellars, communications officer at Euroform Products explains the importance of working with suppliers rather than taking a retail approach to the specification of building boards...

e tend to think of burning as a fairly simple physical process. Even small children understand it. If you set fire to a piece of wood, it burns. Simple. But burning is really a chemical process and, strictly speaking, the solid wood itself doesnt burn. What actually happens is a little more complicated. When heated by a naked flame or friction, the molecules in wood begin to vibrate and move apart, becoming a volatile gas: smoke. This gas combines with the oxygen in the atmosphere; it is this combining of molecules, this chemical reaction that produces energy as a side-effect in the form of heat and light: a flame. So, the solid wood isnt burning at all, the gasses released by the heating of the wood form just half of a molecular relationship that creates fire. Actually, its even more complicated than that. If I was to tell you that water is actually burnt hydrogen, youll have some idea of just how complex it is. And if burning is such a deceptively complicated process, the means by which we defy that process must be equally, if not more, complicated. Which brings us to fire resistant boards: The idea that these crucial construction components can be effortlessly picked from the shelves of a local builders merchant or dropped into a virtual shopping trolley in some online equivalent, is a misguided and, quite possibly, dangerous one.

designed for that particular application. It is the words rigorous and testing which are key here. In fact, whenever the word testing is not accompanied by the word rigorous, alarm bells should ring, particularly when it comes to the subject of fire resistance.
A brief overview of fire testing

As youd imagine, fire testing isnt simply a case of measuring how long it takes for a building board to fail. Anyone with a large back garden, a stopwatch and a complete disregard for their neighbours could do that. There are three core criteria for fire testing: integrity, insulation and load bearing. The integrity of a building board is essentially a boards ability to remain physically intact. When flames have passed through the construction and have ignited a cotton pad on the non-fire side of the board, the board is said to have ceased to remain intact. In a sense, material testing laboratories dont measure the success of products so much as how long it takes for them to fail.
Continued overleaf...

Theres no such thing as a fire-resistant board

In a very real sense, certainly from the point of view of an architect or specifier, there is no such thing as a fire-resistant board. There is a board offering 120 minutes of fire resistance in a suspended ceiling application. There is a board offering 90-240 minutes of fire resistance to internal independent wall linings. There is a board offering 90 minutes of fire resistance to a nonload-bearing steel stud partition with an overall thickness of 195mm and maximum centres of 600mm. But there is no such thing as a board which is simply fire resistant. The relative fire resistance of a board is entirely dependent upon its application and can only be measured by rigorous testing, not simply of the board itself, but of the board as part of a system

Why EN testing?

The insulation criteria is measured using thermocouples that monitor the amount of heat passing through the structure being tested. Failure occurs when the average temperature has exceeded a predefined maximum or, indeed, if a single thermocouple records an excessive temperature. The load bearing criteria measures a structures ability to maintain a given imposed load under fire-exposure conditions.
How to test for rigorous testing: Rigorously

Ensuring the board youre about to purchase or specify has been rigorously tested for your particular application can be extremely complicated, not to mention labour-intensive, involving wide-ranging online research and hours spent poring over technical datasheets. And while all of that is, to a certain extent, unavoidable, a lot of the pressure can be eased by simply talking to your building board supplier, not only to extract information but also to assess their attitude to testing. Fire testing cannot be approached as a box-ticking exercise. A responsible manufacturer and/or supplier of building boards will have a fire testing ethos. Their testing will be an ongoing, permanent process driven by a continuous improvement mindset. They wont simply send products for testing, they will be actively involved in that testing. They wont use a material testing laboratory, they will have a long-term and collaborative relationship with a material testing laboratory while simultaneously respecting said laboratorys expertise, qualifications and, of course, independence. It is also worth enquiring as to whether your building board supplier has fully embraced EN testing.

The proliferation of continental trade necessitated the creation of a European Norm (EN) to guarantee consistency of quality irrespective of borders. A side-effect has been to create a standard that is, in most cases, more onerous. The fact that an EN standard has to satisfy the current standards of many countries and cannot be reduced to the demands of just DIN or BS, for example, means it is almost inevitably going to be more ambitious in its scope. This is why EN testing generally demands a more stringent increase in furnace temperatures; dictates that thermocouples be placed in more challenging locations on the specimen material, and can, for example, require cover strips to be applied over studs in thin-gauge metal-framed partitions to protect from additional temperatures. An embracing of EN testing also demonstrates a commitment to future requirements, says John Taylor, business development manager at Euroform Products. Were not satisfied to just meet current criteria, were looking to the next standard, and the one after that, and the one after that...

DOOR CLOSER TICKS FIRE SAFETY BOXES

Samuel Heaths controlled, concealed door closer, Powermatic, meets the plethora of legislation, regulations and product performance standards that govern fire safety. With the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRO) placing a legal obligation on the responsible person to carry out a risk assessment, and Approved Document B (fire safety) of the Building Regulations imposing further requirements, Powermatic offers a solution where fire safety measures are deemed necessary. The door closer meets the requirements of BS EN 1154 and, as such, carries the CE mark. It also meets the requirements for one-hour and half-hour fire doors under BS EN 1634-1, boasts Certifire accreditation and is approved for use by the BWF under its fire door and doorsets scheme.

ALARM SYSTEM UPGRADE

The Ei168RC from Aico is a base unit for the companys RadioLINK wireless interconnect mains powered smoke alarm system. The base unit adds a number of important extra features to RadioLINK, as well as enabling installers to take advantage of Aicos new RC control technology. Aico says that this upgrade now makes its RadioLINK systems technology even better suited to more comprehensive alarm systems, offering greater coverage and protection, while also allowing greater control. The Ei168RC RadioLINK base is set as a multi-level repeater as standard, being capable of receiving, transmitting and re-transmitting to achieve multiple signal paths. This means that it is now possible to achieve increased coverage in properties with a larger floor area and confidently integrate a larger number of alarms into the system.

NEW HIGH SECURITY POST BOX

Securikey has introduced the new High Security HS Post Box. Built to withstand outdoor environments, the HS range features the high security Euro Profile cylinder key lock that is used across other Securikey products, offering the potential for a one-key security solution. Available in two sizes, Securikeys HS Post Box is made from 1.5mm thick galvanised steel that features a black powder coat paint finish, making it highly resistant to abrasive weather and rust.

FIRE SAFETY IN HOUSING

With a growing choice of domestic smoke alarms available, specifiers and installers need to be careful when selecting the right type to use particularly with the appearance of confusing information and irrelevant claims about some products. All new homes, extensions, changes of use to dwellings and alterations such as loft conversions, must comply with Part B of the Building Regulations. Part B clearly demands mains, interconnected smoke and heat alarms with back-up power. Battery-only alarms are not permitted. For other existing homes, the current Code of Practice for domestic fire alarm systems, BS 5839-6: 2004, provides the benchmark. This also recommends hard-wired smoke alarms (and heat alarms for situations where they cant be used) in most cases. Battery-only units can be considered for rented bungalows or owner-occupied houses up to two storeys but only where structural fire precautions meet current Building Regulations. But it is not an easy task to ensure that all ceilings, partitions, doors, etc., really do comply. Professionally installed, hard-wired alarms are the safe answer. Wireless interlinking technology, using accessories such as Kiddes Slick Wireless Alarm Base, can eliminate disruptive wiring between mains alarms powered from an adjacent lighting circuit.

OPEN-PLAN SAFETY
There is increasing demand for open-plan living space and the Automist pre-engineered watermist solution from Plumis provides designers with an active fire protection option to protect escape routes and aid evacuation, offering design flexibility and reducing costs while meeting the Building Regulations. Automist, has now been assessed and accepted as an LABC Registered Solution Registered Detail RD171 to provide active protection for escape routes and facilitate open plan layouts in suitable loft conversion applications.

These self-contained, state of the art CO alarms are specially designed for quick and simple installation by anyone and for low cost of ownership, offering Best Value over a 10-year life. In anticipation of future changes to the European CO alarm product standard, the new alarms have an extra End-of-Life/Fault LED and ramp up horn. They are BSi Kitemarked and comply with the latest edition of BS EN 50291:2010. They also offer Quick Test functionality whereby the unit can be tested with carbon monoxide gas spray and react instantly to confirm the presence of carbon monoxide, rather than the normal response times required in BS EN50291. Both models are small in size with a slim profile and can be wall-mounted or used free-standing.

FIRE PROTECTION FOR RAINSCREEN CLADDING

A new, intumescent cavity barrier solution for use in rainscreen cladding systems has been launched by Promat UK. The PROMASEAL RSB-V and RSB-N barriers offer a new option for creating effective fire protection for rainscreen cladding. Rainscreen cladding systems generally involve large, continuous cavities in the outer leaf of the building, which can create a ready route for fire and smoke. PROMASEAL RSB-V and RSB-N have been introduced to address this issue. They allow the creation of either a ventilated or non-ventilated fire protection cavity barrier which is both effective and reliable. Both products feature a rock wool section with an integral intumescent strip. When exposed directly to fire, the intumescent material expands rapidly to fill the gap in the rainscreen, thus preventing the spread of the fire along the cavity.

DESIGNED TO BE SECURE
Brio's Weatherfold 4s secure exterior folding door and window furniture is aimed at those who want to be part of the great outdoors without having to move from their armchairs. The companys new Weatherfold 4s hardware has been designed to be fully secure. The intermediate hanger hinge and bottom guides now feature non-removal pin technology. The non-removal pin is positioned against the door when the door system is closed meaning there is no access to it. This means that the pins cannot be removed, therefore the exterior hardware cannot be tampered with or removed.

Show proves a success

Ecobuild 2013 celebrated a busy event full of new technologies, products and an exceptional educational programme...
cobuild welcomed 45,000 industry professionals to Londons ExCeL over three days to explore the products and services of more than 1,000 exhibiting companies, including Baxi, Saint-Gobain, Worcester Bosch, Mitsubishi, Schueco, Marshalls and Kingspan Environmental. In addition to the industrys major players, the event showcased a number of new green shoot companies introducing innovative ideas and products to the marketplace and the popular Biodiversity Pavilion covered subjects from bat boxes and living roofs to wild habitats and water management. There was a focus on resources with the new WasteZone and university students were also given the chance to showcase their projects as the event saw involvement from universities including Brighton, Kingston, Oxford Brooks, London Met, Reading and the University of East London. Paul King, chief executive, UK-Green Building Council commented: Several exciting and important things happened at Ecobuild this year. The Green Deal did for refurbishment what Zero Carbon did for new build in 2006 catalyzing huge amounts of investment and innovation for a whole new industry. A consistently packed Arena and a host of thought-provoking seminars and features on the exhibition floor made this the most entertaining Ecobuild yet for visitors; and the optimistic mood of all who came showed that the green shoots have survived another tough winter and are ready to burst into a new spring for the construction industry. Returning to the show floor for 2013, the Ecobuild Arena designed by landscape architect Patrick Collins, offered a programme of keynote debates and high level discussions as well as an audience with Joanna Lumley and Jonathan Dimbleby. In all, over 900 speakers took to the stage to address the political, economical and technical challenges facing the built environment community. Attracting a host of industry experts, commentators and Ministers, including Edward Davey MP, Don Foster MP and Gregory Barker MP, the conference programme tackled subjects including The Green Deal is it delivering? , Does the UK have any hope of achieving its 2050 carbon reduction target? and Can green drive the next wave of growth? Packed seminar theatres on the floor covered topics including Green Energy, Passivhaus, Refurbishing Britain, Property, BIM and Whole Life Carbon. UBM is now looking forward to its international Ecobuild events; Ecobuild China to be held from 1-3 April 2013 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre and Ecobuild India which will take place from 16-17 April 2013 at the BEC, Mumbai. Later in the year, Ecobuild Southeast Asia will run in Kuala Lumpur from 17-19 September 2013.

TESTING TIMES
Testo showcased its range of thermal imaging cameras at Ecobuild, including a new feature: SuperResolution. This optional feature effectively doubles the geometric resolution of thermal images. No artificial intermediate values are generated. True readings are utilised, which can be regarded as comparable to a higher detector resolution. The thermal images captured with the resolution of the camera detector are intensified, providing greater detail and clarity with truly outstanding images. The precise infrared images from the cameras allow even the smallest faults in difficult-to-access places or dangerous zones in industrial systems to be identified precisely, reliably and from a safe distance.

THE SECRET LIFE OF A LANES EMPLOYEE

By day, Gavin McNulty is an office administrator with the Lanes Group. But by night (and at weekends) he is a Coco-nutter one of the worldfamous troupe of clog dancers from the Rossendale Valley in Lancashire. The name comes from the wooden nuts (actually bobbin tops) which are worn at their knees, waists and wrists, and tapped together as percussion to the dancing. Although they perform all year round, the biggest date in the Coco-nutting calendar is Easter Saturday, when the troupe dances the 11km from the Bacup boundary to the boundary of Waterfoot.

FITTING GUARANTEE
A recent report suggests as many as 19 million doors could qualify for replacement under the Green Deals terms. The Golden Rule is that the repayments should not exceed the energy savings, and its thought that most loans will be taken over a period of five to ten years. This raises the question of guarantees. Without a ten year guarantee, consumers could face making repayments for a product after its guarantee has expired. Thats OK if the product still works, but is a problem if the product has failed. Consumer protection is an integral part of the Green Deal and its a requirement of the scheme that the term of the loan is no longer than the lifetime of the measure. A good guarantee will prove a major aid to sales for installers. Nick Dutton, managing director of Door-Stop International, comments: Composite doors one of the best, least disruptive and most energy efficient measures available under the Green Deal are usually guaranteed for a maximum of five years. However, all elements of the standard DoorStop door (ERA Vectis lock, stainless steel furniture and Door-Stop glazing cassettes) are guaranteed for a full ten years. In fact, the ERA lock is so secure that, if a burglar breaks in through the lock, the whole door will be replaced under guarantee and the homeowner will also receive 500.

GREENTEQ ALUMINIUM ADHESIVE NOW IN STOCK

VBH now holds stock of greenteQ 2C-alu adhesive for the bonding of corners of anodised or powder coated aluminium profiles, including windows, doors, cladding and faades. Aluminium sections can be powder coated after bonding. 2C-alu adhesive can also be used to bond other materials such as PVCu, fibre reinforced plasterboard and HPL (high pressure laminate). greenteQ 2C-alu adhesive is a two component product supplied in a 550 or 900g dual cartridge, which mixes to the correct ratio in the static mixing tube that also acts as an application nozzle. The product is thixotropic, does not drip and is solvent free. It can be painted over when fully cured, and is also weather resistant. VBH marketing manager Gary Gleeson commented: Quality-wise, greenteQ 2C-alu adhesive is at the same high level as the established adhesive brands, but our customers report considerable cost savings against those products.

Coco-nutters clearly have stamina. It can be physically challenging, says Gavin. During the Easter boundary dance, for example, we start at 9am and dont finish till around 7pm. But we practise every week, and perform regularly, so being a Nutter is an exercise regime itself!

GETTING THE UV TREATMENT

Novotels Saigon Centre hotel in Vietnam has installed six Hanovia UV systems for service water treatment. The UV systems kill any micro-organisms from the incoming city water supply, leaving it good enough to drink. All the UV systems provide a minimum 99.999% reduction in E.coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Legionella and other harmful micro organisms. In this installation, six, single-lamp AF3 amalgam UV systems are installed on the hotels roof, treating water flows between 26.5m3/h and 30m3/h. City water passes through sand filters before storage in roof tanks, from where it passes through the UV systems prior to distribution to every room in the hotel. These UV systems are very small and can be installed in the tightest of places.

ELEGANT HEATING
Hudevad has introduced its Consilio bench radiator, suitable for areas with limited wall space. Consilio is more than just a source of heat as it combines functionality and aesthetics, making it a practical piece of designer furniture. Consilio came about from a project for student accommodation where the brief was to provide a bed and study area with seating in a small space. Hudevads solution was to incorporate two, flat panel radiators as the front and back of a bench with seating on top. As students can be a bit robust when it comes to furniture use, the valves were encased in the panels away from careless feet.

having marketed the Deviheat electric UFH system and the Devimat floor warming mat for more than 20 years. The companys subsequent expansion into wet, or hydronic, UFH technology has been a logical and successful development. Instead of electric heating elements, the system works by circulating water at low temperature through a series of pipe loops laid within a screed, or between timber joists, beneath the floor surface.

HELPING SHOWCASE UNDERFLOOR HEATING

The UKs first fully functional underfloor heating showroom has opened to the public. It displays a number of heating systems complete with tiles fixed using Ultra Tile and Ultra Floor materials. The Underfloor Heating store in Essex is the first of its kind; it was built to showcase the latest underfloor heating technology using working systems and tiled floor sections. Several different types of system, including both water and electric, were installed with a variety of tiles from quartz to porcelain and granite. Showcasing a large number of different pods has demonstrated the compatibility of Ultra Tile materials and various tile types with heating systems. Throughout the store, combinations of the following products were used: Ultra Floor Level IT one HDB floor leveller, Ultra Tile ProRapid RS and ProFlex SP adhesives and Ultra Tile FlexJoint grout. The Underfloor Heating stores director, Michael Lewis commented: We used Ultra Tile adhesives in our showroom because we have tried many brands and none compare to the quality of Ultra Tile.

DISABLED TOILETING SOLUTION

Total Hygiene has developed a package whereby it will provide design advice, supply, install, and commission appropriate bathrooms, wetrooms and toilets, to ensure new build or refurbishment projects meet disabled peoples needs, relevant legislation and best practice guidance. The company has also devised a scheme for social housing providers, whereby certain equipment can be refurbished and moved to alternative locations when no longer needed at one home, optimising budget considerations. One of the four necessary features is use of a toilet on the ground or entry floor, says Robin Tuffley at Total Hygiene. A simple option is to replace a conventional WC with a wash and dry toilet, which enables the disabled person to go to the toilet without the aid of a carer.

SIGA ACHIEVES PERFECT PITCH

An exclusive new build detached house in Cheshire not only pays testimony to the use of quality natural slate supplied by SIGA it also celebrates the success of the installation by two young roofers, both with apprenticeship backgrounds. A challenge for the two individuals both under the age of 28 who completed the installation single-handedly, the 667.52m2 six-bedroom house, complete with a separate garage and garden store, features SIGA 32 500 x 250mm Spanish-sourced slate across its single and double storey sections. The slate also adorns a series of flat roofed and pitched dormers. Specified by Calderpeel architects in Altrincham, Cheshire, the SIGA 32 blue/grey natural slate was chosen primarily to blend with the buildings rural location.

SILVERWOOD SOLUTION
The A. Proctor Groups Silverwood timber cladding is now being used by the Accord Group. The Accord Group has set up an award-winning factory called LoCaL Homes to manufacture its own timber frame houses. At Pattern Gardens in Darlaston, West Midlands, the Silverwood Biseau profile was factory fitted on a 200mm frame to almost 100 new homes. Additional services provided by the A. Proctor Group included routed cladding to allow site fit at the wall and floor junctions by the contractor on site. Silverwood offers a wide exterior cladding product range which includes a diversity of colours, appearances and profiles provided with ease of installation and maintenance as standard. It also offers a comprehensive ten-year, maintenance-free guarantee against timber decay and is durable for up to 50 years as a result of the combined timber treatment and the Silverwood factory-applied paint finish.

ROBUST CLADDING
Sotech recently supplied a faade solution for an ASDA multi-storey car park in Weymouth. Working on the new multi-storey, Sotech was required to provide a faade material which was in keeping with the stores terracotta tiled roof, but with a more robust nature. Sotechs Optima IPC extruded aluminium plank system proved to be the answer for the 50,000 project.

EDGEMERE COMPLEMENTS LOG HOME DESIGN

Marley Eternits Edgemere interlocking slate has been specified as part of the construction of two pioneering, pre-fabricated Canadian Log Homes at a campsite for Christian charity, Foundation Matters. After discussions with the local planning officer, Marleys Edgemere interlocking slate was selected as an aesthetically pleasing and practical roofing solution which would complement the natural look of the log homes. Jem Hudson said: While a Staffordshire Blue colour is predominant in the area, on the advice of the South Derbyshire Planning Officer, we selected a smooth grey colour for the Edgemere slates as this provides a seamless blend with the surrounding location of the camp and the new log homes. The main centre used 6,800 Edgemere slates, with the smaller managers home requiring approximately 2,300 slates in total. As one of Marley Eternits best-selling products, it is clear that the powerful combination of aesthetic impact, performance reliability and cost-effectiveness helps to make the Edgemere slate one of the premier concrete roof tiles for the industry. The Edgemere range can achieve up to an A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide to Specification and has also achieved a Good rating under the BES 6001 framework standard for responsible sourcing of construction products.

DEMAND INCREASES
Panel Systems has reported an increase in demand for its aluminium composite panels. Aesthetics is still the number one reason that architectural panels are chosen especially for modern urban and city centre locations. On a recent project, the architect for The Link, a flagship community building for young people in Thamesmead, London, chose Aluglaze panels in four distinctive colours red, orange, yellow and green. Aluglaze was specified due to the range of powder coated colours available which were used to create a vibrant building faade that complemented the colour of the curtain walling.

Over 450m2 of the extruded IPC system, known as Xplank, was provided in a textured PPC finish to match the roof tiles surface and colour. Xplank is only a tenth of the weight of traditional terracotta tiling and is recommended for areas where the cladding comes into pedestrian areas, due to its strength and impact resistance. The Xplank was impact tested at both Sotechs state-of-theart testing facility and by independent authorities. These results were compared directly with the durability of traditional terracotta tiling.

TIME SAVING WITH POROTHERM

Clearview Homes has specified Porotherm, the clay block walling system from Wienerberger, to speed up construction of a new development in the centre of South Harrow. The 50-unit, L-shaped apartment block is split over three levels up to five storeys. Porotherm is being used for the internal structure and it is anticipated the building will be ready for roof installation within ten weeks. The Porotherm walls, comprising precision-engineered blocks bound with a specialist ZeroPlus mortar, are expected to go up one floor per eight days during this phase. Once this internal structure is erected, the external facing bricks will be applied and internal fix will begin at the same time, cutting a 15-month build to approximately 12 months in total. Wienerbergers Warm Golden Buff brick is being used for the external faade.

SPACE AGE SPECIFICATION

The new 1,800m2 Aerospace Technology Centre at Nottingham University provides a dedicated research and information exchange facility within the Institute for Aerospace Technology. It also provides a showcase for RigiSystems Ziplok standing seam profile with MicroZink finish in a roof-to-wall application which complements the space age nature of the project. MicroZink provides all the performance benefits of aluminium with the aesthetic appeal of a traditional zinc roof. The coating even changes colour and gloss over time in almost exactly the same way as pure zinc, yet in all other respects the profiles behave in the same way as standard aluminium.

TEK TAKES TO THE STAGE

The Kingspan TEK Building System is helping the Hafren theatre in Powys reach new heights as part of a 900,000 refurbishment. To construct the high-level extension, Kingspan TEK Building System panels were fixed externally around a steel frame. This provided the structure with the required racking resistance and stability while also delivering excellent thermal performance and airtightness. The systems highly insulated core allows it to achieve U-values of 0.21W/m2K and below, while its proprietary joint system can help reduce air leakage levels to 0.91 air changes per hour at 50Pa. One of the main benefits of the Kingspan TEK Building System is that it is designed and cut to a projects unique specification before it leaves the factory. This speeds up the on-site installation process as very few adjustments are required and waste is kept to a minimum.

SIKA TROCAL OFFERS A GREEN FUTURE

Sika-Trocal has launched a new range of Sika Green Roof systems. Each system incorporates SikaTrocals single ply waterproofing membranes, which are renowned for being cost-effective and quick to install. Sika-Trocal prides itself on the flexibility of choice that it offers to architects, and with the new green roof systems, specifiers can opt for a Sika-Trocal single ply membrane and then choose which green roof supplier they want for the green element. This choice now includes the option to select green roof components that are fully Sika branded, which would have the added benefit of a Sika guarantee for those parts of the system. As part of the product launch, Sika-Trocal has worked closely with a selection of highly skilled green roof experts who have now become Sika Green Roof Contractors. These contractors are experienced in designing and installing green roof systems, allowing specifiers to benefit from a professional installation. The new green roof systems also have all the inherent advantages of working with Sika-Trocal, including single ply membranes that have been certified by the BBA with a life expectancy durability statement of in excess of 30 years and installation by Sika-Trocals network of trained Licensed Contractors.

GUARANTEED TO BE GREENER
Sika Liquid Plastics has launched a new range of green roof systems which includes all types of green roof finishing options. The new product offer gives specifiers peace of mind that every element of the green roof system is guaranteed to last as long as the waterproofing which can be up to 25 years as long as the appropriate maintenance contract is in operation. Specifiers also benefit from all the other key advantages of using a Sika Liquid Plastics system, including a seamless and flexible waterproof membrane and completely cold installation.

to the exterior one for a 3D effect) in a variety of colours ranging from white to blue to make the building a landmark one. The 500mm-wide panels are manufactured with a tongue and groove coupling and are fixed with aluminium fasteners. Theoretically, faades can be more than 200m long and a panel height of up to 25m can be mounted in one piece. Some 200 times tougher than glass, the panels enable light transmission between 5-65% and, at the same time, are highly efficient insulators of heat (<0.71W/mK) and sound (21-43dB).

Cembrit has launched a new base board specially designed for insulated render systems. With the application of liquid renders, specifiers can create faades combining a monolithic appearance with all the advantages of rainscreen claddings. Cement based Cembrit PB, has low water absorbency and is dimensionally stable. It wont expand and contract with heat and cold nor will it swell and shrink due to changes in moisture crucial characteristics inhibiting surface cracking in the render finish. Cembrit PBs specially developed, reinforced, chamfered edges mean the board can be fixed close to their edges. This maximizes stability at the butt joints, further reducing the risk of the render cracking along the joints, which can be a vulnerable area of the faade.

AIR LEAKAGE SOLUTION

Geocel has launched a new solution to some of the most common air leakage points. New AIRBLOCK Flexible Foam is the only air leakage foam seal tested to the latest standards and offers a versatile solution to filling voids to improve energy efficiency. AIRBLOCK Flexible foam helps fill voids and seal the gaps where air leakage most commonly occurs where building services enter and leave the building (such as electrical cables vents and pipes), gaps around windows and doors, around suspended floors and loft hatches, even through light fixtures. As it is a high performance polyurethane foam, it will fill and seal most construction materials and remains flexible to absorb movement after it has cured. It can be cut, sawn, sanded, painted or plastered over after application.

SHOWING OFF NEW OFFICES

The Bakewell Agricultural & Horticultural Society has a new facility which meets the needs of staff, directors and the various Bakewell Show committees, beginning a new chapter in the story of one of the oldest and greenest agricultural events. The new timber-framed building from Pinelog is entirely in keeping with the Societys ethos, being built to the highest possible ecological standards and incorporating many environmental features.

SOFTWARE ADOPTION
Timber frame manufacturer, Wyckham Blackwell, is the latest company to adopt Wolf Systems advanced timber frame detailing software, Horizon. Horizon is the UKs first timber frame application built on Autodesks BIM technology, Revit. Using Horizons proprietary 3D building objects, timber frame designers can realise the advantage of working in a true BIM environment. As the software is built on Revit, Horizon automates the modelling of true 3D building elements rather than the primitive 3D objects found in alternative software. Information rich, timber frame models created through Horizon enable fast and accurate production of elevations, sections, drawing sheets and schedules. By working on a single building model, design accuracy and productivity are intrinsically improved. Upgrading to Horizon was a logical move for Wyckham Blackwell, said director David Himmons: We use Wolf products for trusses, joists and timber frame and have used the companys design software for several years. It made sense for us to upgrade to Horizon for two main reasons: Firstly, we are increasing our design capability and have appointed an additional timber frame designer. Secondly, if we are to remain at the forefront of our industry, we must stay abreast of the technology.

UNDERLAY DONATION
The A. Proctor Group has donated ten rolls of its high specification pitched roof underlay, Roofshield, to renovate The Meal Mill on the Scottish Isle of Raasay. The refurbishment of the old Mill will help to sustain and develop both the economy and cultural heritage of the remote island of Raasay. Roofshield has unique vapour and air permeability characteristics, which allow even the most complex of pitched roofs to breathe without the need for traditional air gaps or secondary venting products. Roofshield is as easy to install as traditional roofing felt.

The showground is on a flood plain which meant the building had to be raised by two feet. It has large, sloping buttresses which echo the nearby limestone escarpment. The imaginative use of windows makes the roof appear to be floating. The two side elevations are clad in stone from a local quarry and the rear elevation is constructed from sustainable larch. Redwood boarding, again from a sustainable source has been used for ceilings and other fittings.

PITCH PERFECT SOUND AT ALLIANZ PARK

The new Allianz Park stadium in North London, home to Saracens Rugby Club, has raised the bar for audio systems in the world of rugby. The upgrade to a concert-standard sound system for the 10,000-seater stadium, designed and installed by RNSS, has been designed to give fans the best possible audio experience. Hi-fidelity sound is now available throughout the stadium. In addition to the new East grandstand, it also encompasses the three other stands and all internal spaces. This includes the 105m long interior space under the East stand which doubles as a match day bar, indoor athletics track, and training area. All 17 corporate boxes are equipped with individual multi-source audio and local level controls, and the four function rooms have the same capability, plus comprehensive full range audio playback from a variety of audio sources, including wireless microphones and CD players via a bespoke control rack.

VEKA
VEKA fabricator, Halo's new window system is unlike anything else currently available on the UK PVCu market. The window system supplier has unveiled the TwinSash which can achieve a U-value of 0.38W/mK and reduce noise levels by around 50dB. This level of performance is reached by using triple-glazed, krypton-filled units and foam-filled sections. Amazingly, it can even achieve extremely low U-values using what is considered to be the industry's most cost-effective combination of components; using two 28mm double glazed IGUs (air filled, float glass and aluminium spacer bar) the TwinSash can still achieve an impressive U-value of just 1.2W/mK. Thanks to its enviable level of energy-efficiency, TwinSash is one of the only PVCu window systems to meet the requirements for Passivhaus.
