Pastoral Relations, also known as PCRC, is a standing committee of the Congregation that seeks to support and maintain an open and healthy relationship between the Pastor and members of the congregation. One of the roles of this advisory group is to share ideas, hopes, expectations, and concerns of the congregation with the Pastor. In order to facilitate this healthy exchange, we need input from the members of the congregation. A suggestion box has been created and so that congregational ideas, hopes, expectations, and concerns can be collected. In addition, congregational concerns may be addressed verbally and/or in writing directly with a PCRC member. Attending a meeting, with advance notice, to voice a concern is also encouraged. Current members include; Chris Freudig, Tammy Moyer Vern Shade, Don Siegfried, Jeff Walbert, and Jill Weaknecht. All items will be handled in a confidential manner. Thanks in advance for your input and support. Vern Shade, Chair, PCRC 610.395.0970

Im sure we all have a friend or a family member who loves his truck. If you dont, then just watch a few commercials of craggy cowboys hauling a horse trailer across rugged terrain. Youll get the picture of a perfect man/truck relationship. Fast rewind to the time of Jesus: a mans relationship with his wife was similar to a man/truck relationship today. A woman was counted as a mans property. She was the responsibility of her closest male relative: her father, husband, son, brother or uncle. So for example - when Jesus meets a widow whose only son has died (Luke 7:11), he is meeting one of the most financially vulnerable people in his society. The marriage laws and customs that Jesus observed had to do with preserving a mans property value and inheritance rights. These laws were created for the time in which Jesus lived and (as you read your Bible you will see) they were different from the laws and customs in the time of Abraham, or King David. Fast forward to today. The current arguments about recognizing gay marriage are centered on issues of economic and social justice, the same issues important in the time of Jesus. Today we ask: who is considered next of kin in a medical emergency? How will estate taxes be calculated when a partner is deceased? When can two people have the same health insurance policy? A legally recognized marriage says there is a financial benefit for two people to make a commitment to a relationship. So during this month of June, as we celebrate so many weddings, let us have a generous spirit towards same sex couples who are striving for their civil rights. The legal aspect of marriage today is already different from what it was in Jesus time. It is different from what it was 100 years ago. It will probably be different again in another 100 years. Personally I rejoice anytime I see that two people are willing to invest in a long term relationship.

THE PRAYER SHAWL MINISTY at LUCC: The May 2013 meeting of THE PRAYER
SHAWL MINISTRY was held on May 14th at 6:30 PM at the church. Scripture verses about Old Testament Prayer Shawls and Tassels from Numbers 15: 37-40 were discussed. The ladies shared stories about special yarn, stitches or patterns added to prayer shawls they have made for loved ones. We discovered connections to the symbolism of shawls made in Biblical times to the shawls we make today! 48 Total Prayer Shawls given in 2013: 20 Prayer Shawls were delivered in April. 8 Prayer Shawls were delivered in May. To request a Prayer Shawl - please call the church office. Dawn will add your loved ones n ame to our list. Requests will be honored at our monthly meeting the second Tuesday of each month. NEXT BLESSING: June 9th, NEXT MEETING: June 11th.
Letters of Thanks
Dear Ladies of the Longswamp United Church of Christ Prayer Shawl Ministry, Mere words do so little in expressing the overwhelming gratitude I feel for each of you in receiving one of the most beautiful gifts in my lifetimea most precious handmade shawl that was passed through the most powerful of praying hands and blessed by you. You dont even know me and I am overwhelmingly touched by the tremendous amount of kindness you have given me. I have worn my most beautiful shawl every day and thank God for each of you. I am deeply sorry that this small token of thenks comes to you so late. I have been in great pain but am truly blessed by the amount of support and love that have come my way. I have had 3 surgeries since January and have another procedure on Wednesday, May 1st. I was diagnosed with avascular necrosis this past December. It is death of bone due to lack of blood supply. We were all hopeful that the total knoee replacement surgery would be the solution to the problems the disease has caused, but I am still fighting additional problems that have arisen due to the avascular necrosis. I was a school teacher for 13 years in the Fleetwwod School District and resigned after my children were born. I have a 4 year old son and a 5 year old daughter who are my world and every inspiration to me. We relocated before our children were born. We miss our friends back home tremendously. The Shade Family Vern, Jill, Katie, Matthew, and Mammy have been the best friends to us for so long and it is through their loving friendship that we were touched by your astounding generosity and kindness. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the unbelievable level of hard work, powerful prayer and love you have shown me. I will remember it forever as I will treasure my shawl of healing hope and inner peace every day of my life. With Most Heartfelt Gratitude, Kristin Snyder. Longswamp UCC Prayer Shawl Ministry, Having just returned from our winter vacation in sunny Florida, I now want to thank you all for the lovely shawl. A lot of work was put into making the shawl, and its a wonderful thing you women are doing. Im healing well thanks to thew warm Florida weatherthe past 2 months. Thanks again, Nancy Mory. Prayer Shawl Women, I really appreciate my pretty lilac shawl that Shirley brought to my home. I will get a lot of use out of it this winter when Im sitting in my chair. Thank you so much. Love, Anna Reppert. Prayer Shawl Minstry, On behalf of Linda Miller, thank you so much for the prayer shawl. Its beautiful! She was very touched by your thoughtfulness! She has been using it and is comforted knowing others care for her. Thank you again for your kindness! Peace! The Miller Family To everyone who helped when Joe had his fall, thank you and also thank you for the Hess gas gift cards. I really appreciate them. God Bless all of you Flo Vangeri
