PCRC NEEDS YOUR INPUT AND SUPPORT!

Pastoral Relations, also known as PCRC, is a standing committee of the Congregation that seeks to support and maintain an open and healthy relationship between the Pastor and members of the congregation. One of the roles of this advisory group is to share ideas, hopes, expectations, and concerns of the congregation with the Pastor. In order to facilitate this healthy exchange, we need input from the members of the congregation. A suggestion box has been created and so that congregational ideas, hopes, expectations, and concerns can be collected. In addition, congregational concerns may be addressed verbally and/or in writing directly with a PCRC member. Attending a meeting, with advance notice, to voice a concern is also encouraged. Current members include; Chris Freudig, Tammy Moyer Vern Shade, Don Siegfried, Jeff Walbert, and Jill Weaknecht. All items will be handled in a confidential manner. Thanks in advance for your input and support. Vern Shade, Chair, PCRC 610.395.0970

THE LONGSWAMP UCC BEACON

JUNE 2013
Dear Members and Friends,

CALLING YOU HOME

Im sure we all have a friend or a family member who loves his truck. If you dont, then just watch a few commercials of craggy cowboys hauling a horse trailer across rugged terrain. Youll get the picture of a perfect man/truck relationship. Fast rewind to the time of Jesus: a mans relationship with his wife was similar to a man/truck relationship today. A woman was counted as a mans property. She was the responsibility of her closest male relative: her father, husband, son, brother or uncle. So for example - when Jesus meets a widow whose only son has died (Luke 7:11), he is meeting one of the most financially vulnerable people in his society. The marriage laws and customs that Jesus observed had to do with preserving a mans property value and inheritance rights. These laws were created for the time in which Jesus lived and (as you read your Bible you will see) they were different from the laws and customs in the time of Abraham, or King David. Fast forward to today. The current arguments about recognizing gay marriage are centered on issues of economic and social justice, the same issues important in the time of Jesus. Today we ask: who is considered next of kin in a medical emergency? How will estate taxes be calculated when a partner is deceased? When can two people have the same health insurance policy? A legally recognized marriage says there is a financial benefit for two people to make a commitment to a relationship. So during this month of June, as we celebrate so many weddings, let us have a generous spirit towards same sex couples who are striving for their civil rights. The legal aspect of marriage today is already different from what it was in Jesus time. It is different from what it was 100 years ago. It will probably be different again in another 100 years. Personally I rejoice anytime I see that two people are willing to invest in a long term relationship.

Grace & Peace

Pastor Kathy

JUNE CONSISTORY CORNER

Our May meeting was held on Monday, May 20th at 6:30 at the parsonage. Suggestions have recently been made to rename the parsonage to the Schubert Haus, in recognition of Mr. Schubert who lived at the parsonage for decades and was our organist for just as long, many years ago! Stay tuned for more details as they emerge, and as a Schubert Anniversary celebration is in the planning stages for 2014! Let the Pastor, Elders, or any member of Consistory know your thoughts about the parsonage name change, in keeping with our Pennsylvania German roots. We value your input. Property Committee reported to us that they are hard at work with many projects in the pipeline such as sanctuary painting, church steeple repairs, exterior lighting for the parking lot, parsonage Bilco door replacement, sanctuary roof insulation and much more. The committee has determined, with Consistory approval, to use the expertise of Christopher Stress, architect and historical preservationist, concerning all of our projected and upcoming renovations, repairs and possible additions to the church campus. We want to be good stewards as we move forward, preserving our heritage and the church campus regional historical significance, while thinking of the needs of a changing and growing congregation. We feel that Mr. Stress will be a valuable addition to our decision-making process. Meanwhile, Property Committee definitely needs a few more interested individuals. They cannot carry out their plans without more hands on deck! Property Committee meets the second Monday of every month at 6:30 PM in the church library. Show up for a meeting and find out what you can do with a small amount of your time to make a big impact on the church you love! All ideas are welcome and no one is turned away. A presentation was made by Kathy Raines, chairperson of the Alburtis Parks & Recreation Committee, about our contribution to a memorial sign in Althea and Jeannettes name for the newly completed hockey court right behind their old house in Alburtis. It was unanimously agreed by Consistory that we would make a contribution to such a cause, but that the funds should not come from the bequest, as it is an off-campus expenditure and the bequest clearly states that funds must be used for building purposes here on our church property. Funds will be released from one or more memorial accounts to pay for such a memorial. We wish to honor Althea and Jeanettes memory and generosity in many ways over the course of the next several years. Altheas vision and concise directive must be respected and honored for the incredible opportunity it has presented us here at LUCC. The sign is slated for installation at the Alburtis site by the fall. Hopefully, by now, as youre reading this, you realize that our current energy level is very high here at LUCC. The side entrance looks wonderful thanks to the hard work of so many dedicated and gifted individuals! Get ready to see a repainted upstairs bathroom and library in the coming months. Answer the call for volunteers by Tina Cirafesi. The fellowship is infectious as we beautify what we have been given. We have many wonderful ideas we would like to implement throughout our campus. Finally, Consistory would like to acknowledge Joe Vangeri, our beloved Elder and Property Committee member, who was injured just under three weeks ago, while exiting his van, as he was coming to LUCC for a Sunday morning Elders meeting. Joe, we love and miss you and wish for you peace, comfort and healing as you navigate the many changes that await you. We are here for you and your wife, Florence. Let us know what we as a church, and as a congregation, can do for you. God has granted each of us gifts that are singularly and uniquely ours. You probably already know what yours arenow its time to use your gifts for His glory and in His name. Reach out now and get connected with your church family. To those whom have been given much, much is expected. ~ John F. Kennedy In Christ, Kim Jenkins 2012/2013 Consistory President

CONFIRMATION CLASS FIELD TRIP TO HUFF'S CHURCH Sunday, May 5th was a busy morning for confirmands, parents, mentors and all Global Gateway Campers. First on the agenda was the task to fill out the forms in preparation for our trip to Shepherd Springs, MD. By 10:00 AM everyone was standing on the front steps of Huffs Church with Carl, the Huffs Church historian. Carl shared many interesting facts about the influence of Native Americans in this area, and walked us through Huffs recently restored church building. We were all amazed by the bell tower area still in its original form! After the worship service, all of Huffs and LUCC campers gathered in the Christian Education Building for lunch, meeting one another, and learning about social justice. Excitement is certainly in the air as our Global Gateway weekend trip date approaches! (September 21, 2013). Faith World is a Christian Education experience for children aged 3 12 years. It is offered on Sundays when Holy Communion is served, and children are dismissed to Faith World following the Childrens Sermon. Join us on June 16th, July 21st, and August 18th for Faith World at 9:00am during the summer months. Postcard Ministry: Take time to tell someone that we missed them in worship today. Think of someone who you havent seen in church in a while and send them a postcard from the windowsill in the sanctuary. Drop it in the offering plate and it will get addressed, stamped, and mailed for you. The Garden Ministry: The Lord God took Jennifer, Mary Beth, and Dana and put them in the Garden of Longswamp to work it and take care of it. (Paraphrased from) Genesis 2:15 ~ And thus, the Garden Ministry was born at LUCC. If you would like to learn more or feel called to use your green thumb, please look for the binder in the Library by the mailboxes or talk to any one of our garden ministers. CHOIR REHEARSALS Our Loft Choir will be enjoying its first month of well-earned SUMMER VACATION in June! Vacation will continue throughout July and August. THE PRAYER SHAWL MINISTY at LUCC: The May 2013 meeting of THE PRAYER
SHAWL MINISTRY was held on May 14th at 6:30 PM at the church. Scripture verses about Old Testament Prayer Shawls and Tassels from Numbers 15: 37-40 were discussed. Letters of Thanks
Dear Ladies of the Longswamp United Church of Christ Prayer Shawl Ministry, Mere words do so little in expressing the overwhelming gratitude I feel for each of you in receiving one of the most beautiful gifts in my lifetimea most precious handmade shawl that was passed through the most powerful of praying hands and blessed by you. You dont even know me and I am overwhelmingly touched by the tremendous amount of kindness you have given me. I have worn my most beautiful shawl every day and thank God for each of you. I am deeply sorry that this small token of thenks comes to you so late. I have been in great pain but am truly blessed by the amount of support and love that have come my way. I have had 3 surgeries since January and have another procedure on Wednesday, May 1st. I was diagnosed with avascular necrosis this past December. It is death of bone due to lack of blood supply. We were all hopeful that the total knoee replacement surgery would be the solution to the problems the disease has caused, but I am still fighting additional problems that have arisen due to the avascular necrosis. I was a school teacher for 13 years in the Fleetwwod School District and resigned after my children were born. I have a 4 year old son and a 5 year old daughter who are my world and every inspiration to me. We relocated before our children were born. We miss our friends back home tremendously. The Shade Family Vern, Jill, Katie, Matthew, and Mammy have been the best friends to us for so long and it is through their loving friendship that we were touched by your astounding generosity and kindness. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the unbelievable level of hard work, powerful prayer and love you have shown me. I will remember it forever as I will treasure my shawl of healing hope and inner peace every day of my life. With Most Heartfelt Gratitude, Kristin Snyder. Longswamp UCC Prayer Shawl Ministry, Having just returned from our winter vacation in sunny Florida, I now want to thank you all for the lovely shawl. A lot of work was put into making the shawl, and its a wonderful thing you women are doing. Im healing well thanks to thew warm Florida weatherthe past 2 months. Thanks again, Nancy Mory. Prayer Shawl Women, I really appreciate my pretty lilac shawl that Shirley brought to my home. I will get a lot of use out of it this winter when Im sitting in my chair. Thank you so much. Love, Anna Reppert. Prayer Shawl Minstry, On behalf of Linda Miller, thank you so much for the prayer shawl. Its beautiful! She was very touched by your thoughtfulness! She has been using it and is comforted knowing others care for her. Thank you again for your kindness! Peace! The Miller Family To everyone who helped when Joe had his fall, thank you and also thank you for the Hess gas gift cards. I really appreciate them. God Bless all of you Flo Vangeri
