KOTAK EDUCATION FOUNDATION

SUMMARY Kotak Education Foundation (KEF), is an organization working in the various fields like Spoken English Program (SEP), Health and Hygiene, Parent Intervention Program (PIP), Scholarship and Mentoring, School Teacher Enhancement Program (STEP), Principals Enhancement Program and Kotak Unnati.I worked on Spoken English Program (SEP) where focus was on developing Spoken English ability for vernacular medium students with Kotak Education Foundation under the guidance of my Faculty Guide Mrs. Roopam Gosain and NGO Guide Mrs Yasmin Sha and Mrs Leena More for a period of three month from 3rd October 2012 to 20th December 2012. The objective of the Spoken English Program (SEP) is to improve the communication skills of the students studying in vernacular schools. The SEP program helps to make the students comfortable with reading and communicating in English thereby, enhancing their personality and improving their confidence. My objective was to help the students in every way possible to make them comfortable with English by using various kinds of teaching methods like teaching aids, mind-maps, actions, games, skits, role-plays and various other activities. As per the program, I followed the TLM as prescribed to us by KEF. On Wednesdays we took their reading lessons and on Thursdays we took their group activity- skit, where the students enacted the entire lesson by playing various characters, making use of varied props prepared by us. Besides teaching the other activities that I did were preparation of skits, songs and poems for the annual program of KEF which is RAYS. I prepared the invitation cards and budget for the same. I also prepared patriotic songs and charts for the coming Republic Day. There were Home Visits as well that were done during the course of this project where we (my partner and I) made a thorough study of their background and their financial health. The project included DEL form i.e. Daily Evaluation form and Log Sheet which we have to fill and send to our NGO guides, which was done so that we could improve ourselves from our mistakes and our guides could keep track on our progress. I thank Kotak Education Foundation and ITM Business School for providing me the opportunity to teach the students to speak in English which gave me a feeling of self-satisfaction and self-contentment. I am indebted to both the institutions for making me a better individual today and also for helping me to improve my managerial skills through this project

The Student Intervention Program (SIP) focuses on teaching students attending schools in low-income, disadvantage areas, Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) in English. Kotak group has taken a real wise step to help India grow, by educating the youth. And the step taken by ITM, Navi Mumbai is really good, as involving aspiring managers to this initiative will really help them to add to the skill sets to be possessed by a manager

MAJOR ACTIVITIES 1. Teaching English: I was assigned 3-4 students each from 7C,8F,8G and 8H classes to teach English by following thee Teaching Learning Method(TLM).This is a technique for better and quicker understanding of the language.
TLM:Step 1 - TEACHER READS AND STUDENT TRACK Step 2 - CHORUS Step 3 - SILENT READING Step 4 - PAIR AND SHARE Step 5 - INDIVIDUAL READING Step 6- RANDOM READDING Step 7 - DIFFICULT WORDS MADE UNDERSTAND In the second half (from1:30PM to 5:45PM) I used to teach the students with the help of actions and teaching aids made by me in the earlier half of the day. Due to the time constrain I couldnt give everyone the amount of attention they required so I gave homework to the weak students so that they are at par with the others.

2. Preparation of Teaching Aids: Our nine hours in the school was divided in two parts. In the first half which was pre-lunch session (from 9:00AM to 1:00PM) I used to prepare teaching aid. Teaching Aids consisted of charts, flash cards, chits, pictorial representations templates and many more for better understanding of the difficult words. On a daily basis we had to make charts and templates for the students, which were used to teach the students basic English sentences and the pictures helped them in detecting and relate the objects to real life.

3.Skit Preparation In skit preparation I gave students two-three dialogues based on the lesson I taught on previous day and asked them to learn. Once they learnt the dialogue I helped them in enacting. I also made masks for them and also used some of the teaching aid material for skit. Students performed well and they also enjoyed this activity. The object of this activity was to make them understand what they were learning, so that they can relate it to practical world.

Home Visit of our Students: I with my NGO partner(Anusua Roy Chowdhury) visited students home to check the family condition of the students and collect some data so that we can understand how the household behavior effects the studies of the students. We had deliberately gone to homes of students weak in studies as well as the ones stronger in studies so that we can easily compare the learning methods they use at home.

RESULTS After teaching students for about two months following improvement/changes were seen in students: 1. Reading Speed: - Earlier students used to read very slowly with pause and breaks but after the sessions change was seen in them. There reading speed increased and know they were speaking with very little pause. TLM was very helpful in increasing their speed as they have to speak again and again. 2. Fluency: - They became more fluent. There were some students who were able to read but their fluency was week. They used to read the full sentence correctly but they took lot of time. They used to read one by one word. TLM helped in making them fluent. 3. Pronunciation: - By reading again and again, know they are able to pronounce words correctly 4. Build Confidence: - I saw a tremendous change in the students. The first day when I interacted with them in English, very few of them responded to my questions correctly. Most of them didnt understand what I was asking. They were nervous because they did not understand the language. But after these sessions they are able to understand and speak English. They do respond to my questions correctly. Improved communication skills raised their confidence level. Know students answer confidently 5. Overall Development: - The program was aimed not just to spoken English but also to the overall development of the student. The sessions which I took, skits which student performed, movie session,

22

question/answer round during teaching hours and interaction with students has really helped students in enhancing their personality.

RECOMMENDATIONS Learning English will become easy and interesting for the students through the factor FUN and various activities. It should be action based teaching as teaching them lessons through actions make it easier for them to understand the actual meaning of word or sentence. There should be some sessions were students have to speak in English in front of class which will improve their speaking skills and also their fear of public speaking will move away. Regular role play and skit should be conducted as the students there love to do the acts, and they willingly prepare for it. The most important thing to teach them is all about cleanliness and hygiene as their school and the place where they live is not clean, they need to learn how to keep surrounding clean. The number of teaching staff should be increased so that Kotak can give individual attention to students. Grammar classes should also be arranged as there is no basic knowledge about English and the students should understand rather than mug up the lesson. Students should be allowed to take text books home I they want only then there will be more improvement if they have study material at home as well.

23

LEARNINGS ACCUMULATED Planning & Organizing: - I enhanced my planning and organizing skills. I with my colleagues planned Rays Program. We planned the activities and how the program will be conducted. Time Management: - I learned how to divide time for various activities. How to prioritize things based on its importance. Patience: - There was certain time when it was very difficult for me to be patient especially when after continuous lectures and hours spending on students to teach and they still committed the same mistake. But I managed and always be patient with the students and repeat the lecture as many times it was required. I got to know difference between the learning and level of understanding of the students. Leading: To work in a group leadership is the most important factor. I realized the importance of quality education in our life. I find out the reasons why rural area students who have potential in them are not able to fulfill their dreams. Its because of financial problems, lack of family support, Cultural norms, etc. I always thought that NGO will be a place where people will be laidback but then I understood that its even more tougher than the corporate world. To fit everything in a stipulated budget is difficult and I learned hot to manage it. More than sympathy those students needed our love.

24

CONCLUSION Overall during this one month project with Kotak Education Foundation, found that high differences in the learning & comprehending level of students in rural India. Need to identify the problems in schools in rural India and need to address them at earliest. There is a need to provide good infrastructure facility to students a rural India and it is duty and obligation for our society. The most important problem obstructing the growth & expanding the level of knowledge of students from rural India is the shortage of good & talented teachers. More self-help groups & charity groups, clubs should be brought in to provide help to schools in rural India in terms of infrastructure & training of teachers. The main aim for the programme is to provide the Basic English knowledge with the SEP. to enhance them with their English speaking skills. Main focus was the reading and speaking English. We use to prepare the portfolio of all the students under each of us as to analyze their overall performance. During our teaching project we learned how to coordinate with others, to have patience when some is not understanding or not getting and most important to be planed for every event. Conventional methods of teaching have been replaced by Easy Learning Processes.
