STARTING NINE
Millville High Schools Rachel Rivera wrapped up her scholastic career helping guide the Thunderbolts to the Cape-Atlantic League American I Division title this spring. The three-year starter at catcher batted .415 with three homers and 18 RBIs. She took some time recently to talk to The Daily Journal about softball, her senior year and some of her favorite things.

Question 1) What has been the highlight of your senior year so far and why? A: Probably senior prom, it was a great time and we went over to one of my friends house afterward. It was a lot of fun. 2) Whats your favorite and least favorite part of being a catcher? A: My favorite part is I love being in every play, you get to see everything and be in the middle of all the action. Least favorite would be that we always have to work harder and do extra, (pitcher) Cassidy (Gorgo) and I always say its just the lifestyle we chose.

3) What is your favorite restaurant and what is the best item to get there? A: Olive Garden, seafood ravioli. 4) If they played music when you came up to the plate, what would the song be? A: Any Rihanna song. 5) What is your favorite movie? A: Iron Jawed Angels. 6) What advice would you give younger players coming up in the Millville softball program? A: Step up, be a leader and dont let someone

being in the position that you are take it from you. Come back and fight to get it.
7) What are your summer plans? A: Playing softball, this will probably be my last chance to play and I want to go out with a bang. (Editors note: Rivera plays with the Jersey Starfire). I also plan to spend a lot of time in South Carolina too. 8) Best New Jersey shore town to go to? A: Sea Isle. 9) What cellphone app cant you live without? A: Instagram.

Its a road that the Sacred Heart High School softball team has traveled before. However, this time, the final destination is truly the end of the line. The Lions, who boast a 29-3 mark (a program record for wins in a season) and are ranked No. 2 in The Daily Journals South Jersey Mean 15 poll, are three victories away from successfully defending their state Non-Public B championship. Along the way, the team is also taking time to take in and enjoy the scenery around them, since the players know that this is their last journey together. The school will close its doors for good in June. Its sad because this is it for us, junior pitcher Rosie LaGrotta said. Next year we will all be at different schools. The seniors will be in college and the rest of us are picking other (high) schools to go to. Its just weird, but at the same time, weve having fun playing and winning. While many of the players do reflect on the constant distractions that surround them, they have proven themselves to be a confident bunch inside the chalk lines and havent loss sight of the goal ahead. We still have a lot of unfinished business to do, junior catcher Danielle Lugo said. The Lions have handled a challenging schedule and havent buckled in tight situations. They are 10-2 in games decided by two or fewer runs, including four victories in one-run contests. We are playing with a lot of confidence and I think last years run to the state title has a lot to do with it, senior Lindsay Dwyer said. We know what it takes to be a state champion. Weve been there and done it. But we also know that was last year and nothings guaranteed.

We have to go out and earn it and I know were ready to do that. Sacred Heart coach Les Olson certainly agrees. Theyve been through it already, they know what its all about, said Olson, who wasnt afraid to put a target on the back of the teams t-shirts as a constant reminder that opponents would be looking to knock them off every time they lined up against them. Tight situations dont mean a lot to these girls, they know how to work their way out of them. If defense really does win championships, the Lions should be in position to celebrate in June. With LaGrotta often pitching to contact, Sacred Hearts infield has been called upon to provide constant support and they have responded to the task. Second baseman Samantha Caterina and shortstop Kelly Hullihen have devel-

oped into one of the areas strongest double-play combinations. Third baseman Lauren Dwyer has steadily improved throughout the season, handling the hot corner with a cool flair while while freshman Kaila Smith gives her teammates a big target to throw to at first base and has one of the longest stretches in the game. While the outfield isnt the speediest, left fielder Lindsay Dwyer, center fielder Gabby Castellini and right fielder Kyrsten Makos are all steady and each is a sure bet to catch anything they can get a glove on. And behind the plate, theres nobody better than Lugo. Sacred Hearts farewell tour has been a rousing success so far, but it wants to make sure the final date goes off without a hitch on June 8 in Toms River, site of the state championships.

LOCAL POLL
Super Six 1. Sacred Heart (28-3) The Lions finished an incredible 49-1 at Cunningham Park; they have won 11 straight. 2. Buena (25-4) The Chiefs look to close the door and break the long drought without a sectional title when they host West Deptford today at 4 p.m. 3. Millville (15-8) A divisional title is nice, but the team is still smarting over a first-round exit in the playoffs; next year might be even better for the Bolts. 4. Cumberland (15-6) The senior-laded Colts checked out of the Group III South tournament with a 7-3 loss at GCIT on Saturday. 5. Vineland (13-8) The Fighting Clan are limping to the finish line with three losses in their last four games heading into todays finale. 6. Delsea (10-10) Up-and-down season ended with a thump, dropping a 20-7 loss to Hammonton. *Records through Wednesday.
