A pplication SW: Microsoft Management Console (MMC)

Env ironment:

Protocol: Common Internet File Sy stem (CIFS)

Env ironment:

Protocol: Serv er Message Block (SMB)

Env ironment:

Feature: CIFS Standalone Local Users Serv er

Problem:

The administrator is unable to manage Local Users and Groups on a standalone CIFS Serv er using MMC

Problem:

When attempting to manage a standalone CIFS serv er using the MMC, it is not possible to access Local Users & Groups. There is a red "X" ov er
this option
"X Local Users and Groups
A ccess is denied."

Problem:

Unable to manage local users and groups using the Celerra MMC plugin

Problem:

Receiv e error message say ing "The RPC serv ice is unav ailable"

Root Cause:

In order to properly manage Local Users and Groups on the Celerra Standalone CIFS Serv er, y ou must use the NetBIOS name of the CIFS
serv er when connecting and prov iding the username and password. Errors will occur if y ou attempt to connect using an IP address alone to
manage Local Users and Groups.
To manage a Standalone CIFS Serv er using the MMC plugin for Celerra:
1. Create the Standalone CIFS Serv er.
2. Change the temporary administrator password of the newly created standalone CIFS serv er to a permanent password:
Enter CTRL+A LT+Delete on a windows client, click on the Change Password option. Enter A dministrator for the Username, the IP
A ddress of the CIFS serv er in the Log onto field, and the old and new password (screen will display a popup if the password change
was successful). See emc186399 for more details.
3. Update the Hosts and LMhosts files on the Windows work station (used for MMC access) with the IP address and hostname of the CIFS
serv er (Windows>Sy stem32>Driv ers>etc directory ).
4. Run the net use command to specify administrator on the standalone CIFS serv er and establish the security context:
net use xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx passwordadmin /user:administrator

Fix:

If the command fails, use this sy ntax:

c:>net use \\<standalone_servername> /u:<standalone_servername>\administrator <password>
Example:
C:\>net use \\serv e_alone /user:serve_alone\administrator password
The command completed successfully.
5. Use MMC Computer Management>Connect to another computer, to connect to the standalone CIFS serv er, and enter the name of
the CIFS serv er, NOT the IP A ddress. You should not be prompted at this point to enter the username and password if the net use
command was successful.
6. Manage the standalone local users and groups as needed.
Note: The net use command will need to be run from the Windows sy stem that is being used to administer the CIFS serv er's local
groups any time the Windows sy stem is freshly logged in to.
