The task of reading German is greatly facilitated if one knows how to locate the verb. Generally speaking, the personal form of the verb is found in one of three places in German: (a) immediately after the subject (normal word order) (b) immediately preceding the subject (inverted word order) (c) at the end of the sentence or clause (dependent word order) 2. These three basic forms of German word order are as follows: (a) Normal word order Subject and its moqifiers + verb + verbal modifiers Der alte Mann / geht / langsam in das Haus. The old man goes slowly into the house. (b) Invert ed word order Any word except a conjunction or interjection + verb + subject and its modifiers + other modifiers Wann / kommt / Karl / nach Hause? Whe;1is Karl c o m i ~ g home? Gehe.1 / Sie / bitte nach Hause! Please go home! Den Hund / sehe / ich / auf der Stra6e. I see the dog in the street. 29
30 WORD ORDER- THE BASIC STRUCTURE OF GERMAN SENTENCES ll (c) Dependent (or transposed) word order Subordinating conjunction or words functioning as such + subject and its modifiers + other modifiers + verb Ich wei6, / daD / der alte Mann / in das Haus / geht. Paul wei6, / warum / ich / Deutsch / studiere. Paul knows why I study German. Notice that in English the regular word order is retained in dependent clauses. 13 ADJECTIVES-COGNATES, AGREEMENT, COMPARISON 35 2. For the purposes of reading it is important to be able to identify gender, number, and case. Some of the grammatical signals which help you to do so are the adjective endings, which are either strong or weak. 3. Strong adjective endings tell gender, number, and case of the noun, \ when no preceding word gives this information. These endings generally conform to those of the definite article: MASCULINE FEMININE NEUTER PLURAL Nominative -er -e -es -e Genitive -en ' -er -en -er Dative -em -er -em -en Accusative -en -e -es -e The concept of case will be discussed in chapter 4. Ein dummes Kind hort nicht auf seine Eltern. (neuter nom.) One cannotfind good wine everywhere. A good reputation is more-precious than great riches. Old men are sitting on the steps. A stupid child does not listen to his parents. 4. An adjective takes a weak ending if it is preceded by any limiting article which indicates gender, number, and case. The weak endings are: MASCULINE FEMININE NEUTER PLURAL Nominative -e Genitive -en Dative -en Accusative -en Der alte Mann und seine hiibsche junge Frau wolinen in diesem alten grauen Haus. -e -en -en -e -e -en -en -en -en -en -e -en The old man and his young and pretty wife live in this old gray house. 5. The majority of adjective endings in German will be weak. 6. Adjectives which do not appear directly before the noun they modify will take no ending: Der Mensch wird alt aber bleibt doch dumm. Man grows old but still remains stupid. "
