Tutorial: 6 --- Friction

1) A power of 75 KW is transmitted by a multi plate clutch which is quite old at 1800 RPM. Axial intensity of pressure is not to exceed 15 N/mm2 . The coefficient of friction for the friction surfaces is 0.20. The external radius of friction surface is 120 mm and is equal to 1.25 times the internal radius. Determine the no. of plates required on driving and driven shaft to transmit the required power. Justify the condition assumed. A conical pivot with semi cone angle of 60, supports a vertical shaft of 300 mm diameter & is subjected to a load of 20 KN. If speed of the shaft is 240 RPM determine power lost in friction assuming 1. Uniform pressure & 2. Uniform wear condition. From the following values of coefficient of friction: 0.02 & 0.30,which you will choose for solving the above numerical and why? A simple band brake is applied to a rotating drum of 500 mm diameter. The angle of lap of the band on the drum is 260. One end of the band is attached to a fulcrum pin of the lever and other end is to a pin 100 mm from the fulcrum. If coefficient of friction is 0.25, and a braking force of 100 N is applied at a distance of 750 mm from the fulcrum, determine the braking torque when the drum rotates in anti clock wise direction. Find the force required to be applied at the end of 500 mm long lever of a screw jack. The threads are single start and square with 12 mm pitch and 65 mm mean diameter. The load does not rotate with screw spindle. The coefficient of friction for thread is 0.15 and for collar is 0.12 which is having 40 mm mean radius. Also find the efficiency of the screw jack if the load to be lifted is 8000 N. Draw fig. of following types of pivot bearings. Explain any one in detail (1) flat pivot bearing (2) flat collar pivot bearing and (3) conical pivot bearing. A single band brake is operated by a lever of length 500 mm. The brake drum has a diameter of 500 mm and the brake band embraces 5/8 of circumference. One end of the band is attached to the fulcrum of the lever, while the other end is attached to a pin on the lever 100 mm from the fulcrum. If the effort applied to the end of the lever is 2kN and the co efficient of friction is 0.25, find the maximum braking torque on the drum. Derive the expression for the frictional torque of a flat pivot bearing assuming (i) Uniform pressure theory (ii) Uniform wear theory. Write a short note on centrifugal clutch. A multiple disc clutch transmits 75 kW of power at 2000 rpm. Coefficient of friction for the friction surfaces is 0.2. Axial intensity of pressure is not to exceed 180 kN/m2. Internal radius is 100 mm and is 0.8 times the external radius. Find the number of plates needed to transmit the required torque. Assume uniform wear conditions.
