teens idea has spawned a festival of music. The Classical Masters Music Festival was conceived three years ago by 14-year-old Granite Bay boy, Austin Lee. Now a reality, the capstone event of the festival, the Gala Concert, is coming to Folsom, at 8 p.m., Saturday, June 8, at Three Stages at Folsom Lake College. The concert will feature internationally known pianist Di Wu and local classical guitar master Brandon Yip. The Folsom Lake College Youth Chamber Orchestra will also perform. Three years ago, Austin was putting on the Champagne Concerto as a fundraiser for Del Oro, a senior resource center, of which his mother was on the board. He raised around $50,000 for the organization. Austin, a pianist himself, imagined a music festival, a time and place where musicians could gather to gain inspiration and others could be inspired to learn more about music. According to his father Edward, Austin originally was thinking about holding it in his local junior high school cafeteria. Then, at one of the Champagne Concertos, he ran into Dr. Thelma Scott-Skillman. We talked about starting a music festival, Austin said. I didnt even know that she was the (Folsom Lake College) president at the time. As a result, Skillman offered to open up Three

Stages at Folsom Lake College, which was still under construction at the time, for the festival. The first year of the Performing Arts Center opening was the very first year that they had the Classical Masters Music Festival, Edward said. Now 17 and a junior at Granite Bay High School, Austin is still involved in the organization of the event. Bottom line, Im working for him, I guess you could say, Edward said. The festival partners with the Van Cliburn Foundation. This years featured performer, Chi-
nese-born Wu, is a Van Cliburn piano finalist. Trained in Germany, Wu has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Hamburg Philharmonic, New York Pops, National Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony and many others. She has made debuts at Carnegie and Alice Tully Halls in New York, and has appeared in engagements throughout the United States, Europe, China, Canada, Barbados and Hong Kong. Yip is featured along with her. Yip has been perform-
ing professionally since 1985, and in 2007 premiered a work commissioned by the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra and written for him as part of the Gold Mountain Project. He said he started out with piano lessons when he was 7, and it wasnt until he was 12 years old that he really fell in love with the guitar. My friend and I used to sneak into his brothers room and play his electric guitar when he wasnt there, Yip said. I really took a liking to the guitar ever since then. Classical guitar,
though, began for him when he was in college. At the time, they didnt offer degrees in anything but classical guitar, Yip said. You couldnt go and get a degree in the practices of Jimi Hendrix. He received his schooling at CSU Sacramento and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and is presently the pastor of worship ministry development at Bayside Church in Granite Bay. Ive got a hand in developing the next generation of musicians, tech directors, and artists, Yip said. That
ties in with what were doing with the Classical Masters. Besides the concert on Saturday evening, the two-day festival involves amateur musicians of all levels who apply and are admitted to the festival competition and master classes. Finalists in the amateur competition will perform on Sunday; there is a fee for that performance as well as for the Saturday night Gala Concert. Because my second Masters degree is in cultural anthropology, I took a very different view of how the decades work, said Debi Worth, owner and founder of the school. I went all the way back to 5,000 years before the Christian era. The performance will start with the caveman. Then were moving through music from the baroque era, and through the classical and romantic eras, Worth said. Then we hit all the musical genres through the 20th century. The concert will take place at 5 p.m., Saturday, June 22, at Three Stages Performing Arts Center at Folsom Lake College. The show includes nearly 200 students from 5 years old to adult. Its very fast-paced, Worth said. Our blackouts are very quick. Its an efficient show, and it keeps the audience on their toes. Sohana Minamis daughter Madelyn, 10, of El Dorado Hills, will be performing. The (students) all have dances that have been choreographed by the teachers at the studio, said Minami. They get that whole sense of performing in front of an audience, what its like to perform, and showing their capabilities and what theyve learned throughout the year. Madelyn was taught by Worth when she began at age 4 with the Creative Movements class. Thats where I think Madelyn really got the sense of dance, Minami said. Just for enjoyment and really the love

Just the idea of touring has always surrounded what I do, Worth said. Putting on shows is a passion of mine. In 2012, the school auditioned and was accepted to perform at Disneyland. Kirsten Flores, 17, was part of that trip. She spends around 12 hours a week in dance classes and practice, advancing her skills and preparing for shows.

he Rotary clubs of Cameron Park and El Dorado Hills are joining forces once again for the 18th annual Wine at Town Center event in El Dorado Hills. Rotary Club of El Dorado Hills Past President Bill Tobin said the event is unique, highlighting regional wineries and businesses while raising money for schools and community projects. Wine at Town Center was conceived 18 years ago as an opportunity to showcase local wines and restaurants and at the same time provide funding for our local Rotary Clubs, Tobin said. This
year there will be close to three dozen local and regional wineries, a good number of area restaurants even a local brewery or two, plus an amazing silent auction and live music on two stages. The event will be from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, in Town Center in El Dorado Hills. Tickets are $45 per person. Live music will include The Used Blues Band with a special guest, Blues Hall of Fame member Darrell Mansfield. The two clubs have always partnered for this event, Tobin said. 1990, so there has always been a special relationship. The two clubs have partnered on local and international projects several times throughout the years, and provide vast amounts of service to each community. It makes perfect sense to continue
to partner on this great fundraiser. Throughout the 18 years, Tobin said Wine at Town Center has grown into a successful and popular event. Much like our respective communities, Wine at Town Center has grown significantly during the past 18 years, he said. The event was held as Wine at Serrano before Town Center was built but we couldnt resist the backdrop of a beautiful waterfront stroll for our
event and relocated to Town Center soon after it opened. Much of the funds raised at the event will help support projects and programs the Rotary Clubs have completed or are working to complete. People should attend this event because its a great opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of wines, most of which you wont find in local grocery stores, Tobin said. It is also a great chance to sample area restaurants or bid on an amazing item at the silent auction, maybe even do a little dancing. Knowing your helping our two Rotary clubs provide many wonderful programs and services is just the icing on the cake of a very enjoyable night out. ART
JUNE 2013
BY MARGARET SNIDER
rt lovers will have the opportunity on the weekend of June 1 and 2 to visit selected art studios in Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Shingle Springs and Rescue. Eighteen studios will be open at no charge to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with 39 artists on hand to discuss and show their work and their space. I feel like its a reunion with people that have bought my work over the years, said artist Judy Arrigotti, president of the El Dorado Hills Arts Association. And every year I
meet new people. This year the Spring Art Studio Tour shares a sixth anniversary with The Gallery at 48 Natoma, and the gallery is also taking the opportunity to do something special. Theyve always done the preview show for us, said Arrigotti, but this time theyre going to stay open on that weekend. The Gallery at 48 Natoma in Folsom has a preview display with art of each of the artists who will be highlighted at the various studios on the tour. Maps for the tour can be picked up there as well. The main gallery room hosts an exhibit called

itself is just the best way, the most exciting way to show ones work, Arrigotti said. The public comes to you and sees the environment that youre creating your work in, and they get an opportunity to talk directly to you. Thats very unique. Among the returning artists, Carol Quinn in Folsom has participated in the tour four times. My focus is the California landscape, Quinn said. I particularly love Tahoe, Yosemite, and Gold Country. Places like that are a common theme for me. Varya McMillan, of El Dorado Hills, started out early in her art career painting portraits of actors, musicians, and clowns

which followed from her work as a theater set and costume designer. We all make a circle, McMillan said. Her work has come back around to figurative paintings based on her memories of theaters, circus, and cabaret performers. She always starts her oil paintings with a collage of ancient Cyrillic manuscripts.
You hardly notice it, but if you look closer, you would see here and there some letters, McMillan said. This is important to me, it connects me with my cultural roots. Kritika Bala started painting primarily to raise funds to protect the environment. I am an artist trapped in an engineers body with an environmentalists brain, Bala said on her website. One of her recent paintings is of a woman she met while traveling in India last year, a resident of a tiny village in which running water is the only amenity. In talking to her, Bala found that the womans sons had left for a neighboring town, and she wanted them to come back, while they wanted her to join them. I live in the States, my mom and dad are home in Bombay, Bala said. That story did something for me, because its the same pattern. I and our general manager, Brent Cohen, have helped them to drive members and that membership helps make us more of a local golf course as opposed to courses that draw a lot of players from outside the area to play. Hanson said that among the enduring qualities of the Empire Ranch is the condition of the course. Its also a course that isnt overly penalizing, Hanson said. Its playable and its a fun atmosphere and a lot of people like that. The courses signature hole is the par-3 18th, which is 211-yard elevated tee shot over water, which can be an even more difficult shot when the wind picks up.
Like most holes on the course, the par-4 11th features plenty of change in elevation.
