EARTH DAY
Spring is finally here! We celebrated the season by hosting an Earth Day event with some of the partners and tenants who make 401 Richmond a greener and more earth-friendly place to work. We were happy to welcome some amazing companies that provide environmentally conscious products, including Bullfrog Power, Autoshare, Greenshift , Carbon Neutral Shredding , B Corp, Smart Commute, and Fresh City Farms who are running our community supported agriculture program this year. We also featured tenants Wildlands League (Studio 380), Park People (Studio 119), TREC (Studio 405), Earthroots (Studio 410), Local Food Plus (Studio 220), and Sustain Ontario (Studio 365) who showed off a simple vermicomposter (an organic composter where worms do the work).

PLANNING WITH RON SHIFFMAN

On March 20, 120 people crowded into the Urbanspace Gallery to see Ron Shiffman one of the founders of the Pratt Centre for Community and Environmental Development speak about his incredible 50-year history with community-based planning in New York City. Through this discussion, we were reminded that community-based planning requires more than consultation: it requires capacity building at the grassroots level to ensure that people can make informed choices about developments that will affect their lives. 2

vertical urban factory

From January to May, 401 Richmond hosted the exhibition Vertical Urban Factory and had the pleasure of being joined by curator Nina Rappaport for two special events. Nina is an architectural critic, educator, and curator who is making a case for reintegrating modern, vertical factories into major city centres to address current issues surrounding employment, transportation, and sustainability. Nina led an intimate tour through the exhibitions stunning visual history of factories and participated in a thought-provoking panel discussion in the Urbanspace Gallery with Michael Williams, the General Manager of Economic Development, Culture and Tourism Division of the City of Toronto. POPPING UP
Dubbeldam Architecture + Design (Studio 258) has identified a profound shift in the way we work and theyve responded with the Pop-Up Office, an installation of modular units built out of reclaimed wood. As Dubbeldam explains when all we need is a surface to work on and a place to plug in, the working environment is no longer static. The office generated a ton of press for the firm when it first popped up in a shipping container at the Interior Design Show before spending some time at Ryerson University. You never know where it will pop up next! www.dubbeldam.ca The team (left to right): Oliver Dang, Heather Dubbeldam, Amber Baechle, Suzanna MacDonald, and Jacob JeBailey

Kalyna in her studio

ART OF KARUNA: JOURNEY ALONG THE SPIRAL Studio 209

In Sanskrit, karuna means compassion. It is also the name that was given to textile artist Kalyna Pidwerbesky by her yoga teachers in India, which inspired a new course for her life and art. For Kalyna being given that name started an exploration of what compassion means its not about tea and sympathy, but about understanding, and how that can open up a world view. This aspiration toward compassion is embodied in the name Art of Karuna (Studio 209) and shows up in themes and patterns Kalyna uses in her work such as the spiral, a strong symbol of transformation. Kalyna has been making art since she was a young child. She went to school for drawing and painting before being seduced by textiles. The transition felt right to the artist who grew up in a family of women where hand sewing was always present. She studied textile design and cloth construction by weaving, spinning, and felting and this advanced level technique can be seen in the intricacy of her work, which is structural and delicate, artistic and functional. I like the intimacy of textiles, the sense of touch, and working with the hands. Im not a tailor or seamstress so I come at the wearable pieces like a sculptor building around the body. Alongside her scarves, bracelets, and brooches, Kalyna also creates decorative pieces that hang on the wall and installations. We met Kalyna through the 401 Artisans Marketplace, our holiday arts and craft sale, which she participated in for a number of years. She was interested in transitioning her practice from home to a studio, and saying yes to the space was an important change. As Kalyna recounts, I often tell people that I really started working as an artist full time when I got the studio. The space made the work a lot clearer and it was easier to execute all the plans and visions I had in my head. The space has been serving double duty as a workshop and showroom, giving the pieces that were packed away in boxes a place to be admired. This also shifted how Kalyna thinks about the nature of her work and how to balance a creative life for her its the ebb and flow. Or perhaps that journey along the spiral. Kalyna is having a sale of her work from June 17 to 21 (11 am5 pm) where you can visit her showroom and meet her in person. www.artofkaruna.com
