From: Roy E. Belson, Superintendent of Schools Re: Massachusetts School building Assistance Program for High School Science Laboratory Renovations

Date: December 15, 2011 Please find attached a description of the MSBA special funding initiative for the construction/renovation of high school science laboratories. In order to be eligible for funding by the state a school district/community must submit a statement of Intent (SOI) by January 11, 2012. Once submitted the state will determine which communities have the greatest need. Once such a determination is made a formal proposal with full details must be submitted. The Medford School Committee has voted unanimously to submit the SOI. The state also requires a vote of the City Council. A vote at this time does not commit the city to go forward with design and implementation. It is only a prerequisite for eligibility for eligibility and consideration by the state MSBA. If we are selected by the state as a community with priority need for high school science lab construction/renovation then a full proposal would require a second vote by the School Committee and City Council. Therefore, on behalf of the Medford School Committee, I respectfully request your honorable body to approve the submission of a Statement of Intent (SOI) for high school science lab construction/renovation.
