BELOVEDS IN CHRIST,
his month I will attend a CREDO conference at Roslyn, a retreat center of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia two miles west of Richmond on the James River. Credo is usually defined as a statement of religious belief such as The Apostles Creed or The Nicene Creed. To participants in CREDO conferences, credo means I give my heart and is a time to relax and discern prayerfully the future direction of their vocation as they respond to Gods call in a lifelong process of practice and transformation. CREDO began in the 1990s in response to needs for church-wide resources for the well-being of the clergy, and the Church Pension Fund formed a Wellness Initiatives Advisory Committee to explore options. That Committee recommended a program to give clergy opportunities to pause and evaluate their spiritual well-being, their gifts and skills, and their vocational call through an eight-day discernment conference. I attended CREDO 85 in December 2005 at the Canterbury Retreat Center in Oviedo, Florida, and am still working on the spiritual-health-vocational-financial objectives I set for myself then. My conference this month will be the 264th CREDO conference; participants number more than 6,000 members of the clergy including more than 130 bishops, and more than 400 lay employees. Participants for each conference are selected for being at similar stages of ministry; CREDO 246 will include folks at or near retirement. The Church Pension Fund provides significant funding to provide this wellness benefit to its pension plan participants like me. The acronym CREDO stands for Clergy Reflection, Education, Discernment, Opportunity. CREDO encourages participants to rediscover the passionate essence of their life and ministry in the context of their faith, their relationships, and community. Through the strength of a holistic approach to wellness, participants are invited to examine their minds, bodies, spirits and hearts by examining four significant areas of their lives: spiritual, vocational, health and financial. CREDOs Core Values are: - An intentional Christ-centered community; - A work of the heart, mind, body and spirit; - A living stream with a sustainable spirit; - A four-step life cycle process of identity, discernment, practice and transformation. After the eight day CREDO conference, Frances and Don will meet me and we will have a week out East with family and friends. Please hold us in your prayerful thoughts during this I give my heart time.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE UPDATE The Committee met on April 30th and reviewed the draft plan prepared by Louise Stover. They agreed that the plan should include: fire, earthquake, severe weather, bomb threat, utilities, gas leaks, accidents/ medical issues, and threatening intruders. Plans were discussed to provide training; quick reference cards; emergency supplies; maps identifying the location of fire extinguishers; first aid kits and emergency supplies; maps identifying the location of fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency shut-off valves for water, gas, and electric; and instructions for data recovery. Next steps include revising the draft plan and circulation for parish input. If you are interested in participating, please email Paul Multari at pmultari@yahoo.com. KUDOS! Our own Keith Nelson has received the prestigious Edward A. Dickson Emeriti Professor award at UCI in acknowledgement of his high academic standing, noteworthy teaching, and longterm service to the university. Professor Nelson, a scholar of American foreign relations, is one of the founding faculty of the Irvine campus of the University of California; he has served as director of the Humanities Core Course, the Center for Global Peace and Conflict Studies, the Education Abroad Program and, currently, the Program in Religious Studies. Congratulations Keith on this well-deserved recognition!

PLANNED GIVING
This is the second in a series of articles based on information supplied by the Episcopal Church Foundation. For more information about establishing a planned gift for the benefit of Saint Michael & All Angels, please contact our rector. This article discusses specific types of giving that can be considered.--Ed. LIFE INCOME GIFTS Life income gifts provide you or your designated beneficiary income for life in exchange for your gift. The three most common types of life income gifts are a pooled income fund, a charitable gift annuity, and a charitable remainder trust. In the Pooled Income Fund, gifts ($2,500 gift minimum) are pooled with other gifts and invested in a professionally managed investment portfolio. The donor receives the following benefits: A guaranteed income for life. The amount of the income depends on the rate of return on the funds investments. The income can also flow to another designated beneficiary. An immediate federal income tax deduction. The amount of the deduction is usually based on the age of the donor and/or beneficiaries. The elimination of capital gains taxes, if funded through appreciated securities such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. A possible reduction in estate taxes. At the death of the final beneficiary, the property goes to the church or church-related beneficiary that you named. The benefits of establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity are similar to that of the pooled income fund with the following differences: The minimum gift is $5,000. The income for life is guaranteed at affixed amount. A portion of the gift is deductible. A portion of the income received is tax exempt. A Charitable Remainder Trust is available to donors using assets of $100,000 or more. They can be funded with various types of assets, including real estate. Like the pooled income fund and the charitable gift annuity, the charitable remainder trust provides income for life, an income tax deduction, relief from capital gains taxes (if funded through appreciated property), and a possible reduction in estate taxes. The income fluctuates based on the performance of the portfolio. If you are seeking fixed income annually, a charitable remainder annuity trust is an option to consider. The Charitable Lead Trust, another estate planning tool, enables you to transfer assets to a trust that pays its income to the church or church related organization for a set period of time. At the end of the term, the principal and all capital appreciation returns to you or others that you name GIFTS OF REAL ESTATE, APPRECIATED PROPERTY, AND TANGIBLE PERSONAL PROPERTY Real estate or securities can be the source of your gift to the church. Using a Charitable Life Estate Contract, for example, you can deed your home, vacation home, farm, ranch, or condominium to the church and retain the right to live on the property and/or receive income from the property for as long as you live. You receive an income tax deduction when the property is deeded to the church and normally

avoid any capital gains taxes when making the transfer. Your inheritance and estate taxes may be reduced at the time of your death. Gifts of appreciated real estate or securities allow you to avoid capital gains taxes. It is important to transfer the stock or real estate to the church prior to selling it. However, if the securities or real estate have decreased in value, you should sell the assets before making the gift, thus establishing a capital loss and a potential tax deduction. Gifts of tangible personal property, such as jewelry, coins, works of art, automobiles, etc. may also be given to the church. You are responsible for setting an appraised value on the gift. Any gift over $5,000 must be independently appraised. GIFTS OF LIFE INSURANCE AND RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS Life Insurance is another way to make a sizeable gift to the church. For example: You can purchase a new policy and make the church the owner and beneficiary of the policy. This enables you to leverage your gift, ultimately making a much larger gift than otherwise possible. Contributions to your church to pay the ongoing premiums become tax deductible. You can make the church the owner and beneficiary of an existing policy. The current value of the policy is tax deductible, as are future premium payments. You can make the church a contingent beneficiary of an existing policy, or name the church to receive the proceeds of the policy if the designated beneficiaries predecease the insured. Also, the remainder value of many retirement accounts can be heavily taxed when left to friends and family, but pass tax-free to your church upon your death. Review with your attorney or financial advisor to learn if this is an appropriate gift for you.

he United Nations put forward The Millennium Development Goals following the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000. The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles has made an effort to educate parishioners about the goals and encouraged active participation in their support. Are you familiar with the goals? Can you name all eight? Here is a refresher course if you need a little help. 1. Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger 2. Achieve Universal Primary Education 3. Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women 4. Reduce Child Mortality 5. Improve Maternal Health 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other Diseases 7. Ensure Environmental Sustainability 8. Global Partnership for Development Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, began his 2012 Millennium Goal report by stating the positive. This years report on progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) highlights several milestones. The target of reducing extreme poverty by half has been reached five years ahead of the 2015 deadline, as has the target of halving the proportion of people who lack dependable access to improved sources of drinking water. Conditions for more than 200 million people living in slums have been ameliorateddouble the 2020 target. Primary school enrollment of girls equaled that of boys, . and we have seen accelerating progress in reducing child and maternal mortality. Ban Ki-Moon continued his introduction with a word of caution. These results represent a tremendous reduction in human suffering and are a clear validation

Millennium Goals continued from page 4 of the approach embodied in the MDGs. But, they are not a reason to relax. Are you willing to be proactive? The diocesan website has a link titled, What One Person Can Do? Sometimes we can feel daunted or overwhelmed with the suffering in the world. We see images on TV, our computer or in the newspaper. We want to step back. But taking the coaching of Savina Alkire and Edmund Newell through their article What One Person Can Do?, we can step forward instead of stepping back. Pray One person can pray. One person can take a look at the list of eight goals and pick one to pray for. Think about an organization that you can send money to. Study Learn all that you can about a particular need or Millennium Development Goal. Give Instead of giving unwanted presents or presents of temporal motivation, give a gift that affects a life. Check out Heifer International and/or www.globalgiving.org. Connect Support a missionary or a young person wanting to go overseas. Think about spending your vacation time sharing your professional skills. Help a relief organization. Raise Awareness Learn about a group of people that is in need. Listen to their music, learn about their culture. Grow an understanding and compassionate heart for them. www.un.org/millenniumgoals Take Action Adopt the Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation Rule of Life. www.e4gr.org. Advocacy Contact your representative and see how he/she has voted on particular issues, and/or sign the Micah Call www.michachallenge.org. There is still much to be done in reaching the world. Yet, as one person, working, praying, reaching the corner that you are allotted and is your portion, you are showing responsibility for the greater good. May you be blessed as you reflect and consider becoming involved in a Millennium Development Goal today.

BISHOP JON AND MARY BRUNO, JIM NEWMAN TO LEAD PILGRIMAGE TO FRANCE
Much of the history of modern Europe is the history of the relationships between England, France and Germany (with Spain and Russia on either side and the Italian peninsula exerting religious influence from below). Recent trips led by Bishop Jon and Mary Bruno and The Revd Canon Jim Newman have covered many of these areas (England in 2001, Italy in 2003, Russia in 2005, Germany in 2010 and Spain in 2012). The Brunos and Newman will lead the 2014 pilgrimage to the historical, cultural and religious centers of France that will complete this map. "France has provided a legacy of culinary inspiration paired with the appropriate wines to match," says Newman. "France is a delight to all of the senses. We invite you to join us as we explore the France of Nice, Carcassonne, Limoges, the Loire Valley, Brittany, Normandy, Rouen, Chartres and Paris." The trip will depart from Los Angeles on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, and return on Wednesday, Nov. 12 - a 13-day tour. MESSIAH CHURCH WILL SCREEN 'BEYOND BELIEF' AND 'CLASS DISMISSED'

The Church of the Messiah, Santa Ana, will host two documentary screenings: "Beyond Belief' and 'Class Dismissed' on Wednesday, June 12, 7pm. "Beyond Belief" (2007), directed by Beth Murphy, "tracks the goodwill efforts of Susan Retik and Patti Quigley, two Massachusetts mothers widowed on September 11 while pregnant. Months after the attacks, the two meet and decide to channel their anguish into raising funds for Afghanistan's [500,000] pitifully poor widows. Heartwrenching scenes of the pair expressing still-jagged emotions at fund-raisers and press conferences alternate with shots of their sweet if destitute Afghan counterparts hiding from the Taliban. The shared griefs are the same; the posttraumatic realities couldn't be more different" (New York Magazine). "Class Dismissed" (2009) is a short documentary about Malala Yousafzai, the teenage Pakistani activist for women's education; three years after the film was made, she was the victim of an assassination attempt by the Taliban which she survived though severely wounded. SANCTUARY REFURBISHING UPDATE

Your Sanctuary Refurbishment Project Committee has met to continue discussion initiated at our Annual Parish Meeting on February 3, 2013. An article in ...Love of Mike last month guesstimated the cost for painting, pew/kneeler repair and flooring replacement at $23,000; members were asked to donate a one time gift of $200 toward the cost of this project. The Committees first priority is to finalize costs of repairing our cracked slab floor; Fred Salter, George Line and Mike Ortt are working through these details. We hope to begin work this summer so we can experience the least amount of disruption on our campus. We have an offer of a $10,000 matching grant if we can raise another $10,000 by June 30, 2013; to date we have received $4,550. Please consider that our sanctuary is our spiritual home, and its maintenance is part of our commitment to Saint Michael & All Angels. YOUTH PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND 2013

BISHOP GLASSPOOL PRESENTS EPISCOPAL 101 AT ST. MIKES

By Ruth Poole Bishop Mary Glasspool visited Saint Michael's on Saturday, April 27, and spoke to Deaneries 9 and 10 on the topic "Episcopal 101." She welcomed questions and comments from the audience during her three-hour presentation. She first gave a brief history of the church, from the beginning of the Anglican Church in England to its founding in America. "The Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society" is still the official name of The Episcopal Church. Bishop Glasspool's main focus was on The Book of Common Prayer and its major revisions since the 1928 edition. The Prayer Book emphasizes the centrality of the Eucharist, from sacrifice to sharing a meal with thanksgiving around the table, from a service formerly centered on Morning Prayer. The celebration of Eucharist as written is meant to be part of the Marriage and Burial of the Dead services. A great addition is the present form for Holy Baptism. The Bishop is optimistic about the future of the Episcopal Church. She believes we have moved beyond the sex issue and are now ready to focus on our mission - to reconcile the world to Christ. She has witnessed the positive response of young people to our message. Do not worry about numbers, Bishop Glasspool urged us. We have influence greater than our numbers. We have gifts to offer the world.

fter the life altering pilgrimages to the Holy Land in 2008, 2009, and 2011, Bishop Jon Bruno, gave his blessing for another youth pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The first three Youth Pilgrimages were a huge success and in 2013 we are taking another group of youth to explore the Holy Land and their spirituality. The ten to twelve day trip is broken into two geographic areas. Half of the pilgrimage is spent in Nazareth, exploring the Galilee, Tiberias, the Mount of Transfiguration, the Via Mara, among many other historic and biblical sites. The remainder of the trip is spent in Jerusalem at St. George's College Guest House. St. George's College holds the Diocesan offices of the Episcopal Church in the Middle East, and we are often greeted by the bishop when we arrive. While in Jerusalem, the group explores the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Dome of the Rock, Western Wall, Mount of Olives, the Judean Desert, and other exciting, fun places. Youth have an opportunity to touch every body of water in the region--swimming in the Galilee and Mediterranean, floating in the Dead Sea, or standing knee deep in the Jordan renewing their baptismal covenant. Currently, we are in the process of taking names of youth 14-17 years old (with a $500 deposit to secure a place) for our fourth pilgrimage in 2013--August 1-12. The estimated cost is $3,500 per youth, which may be offset by fundraising done by your parish and our diocesan office. Loving God, we turn to you in times of heartbreak and grief. We know that your thoughts are not our thoughts, and you are too high for us to comprehend. But you, Loving One, suffer with us and know our pains, as we are your very own. We know you bend your heart to those who cry out to you. Send out your Spirit upon those who mourn a loss beyond comprehension, and give us guidance to do what we can to love them through these days and hours. SAINT MICHAELS FINANCIAL UPDATE THRU APRIL: Preliminary income is $149,066.YTD Expense is $145,573.The parish Net Ordinary Income is $3,496 which is $29,305 ahead of our plan.YTD Pledge Income is $120,359, $14,409 above our plan through the end of 2013. Total operating cash balance is $121,561 of which $87,984 is designated gifts leaving a net balance of $33,577, about two-thirds of one months operating cash requirement. PLEASE REMEMBER . . . Saint Michael & All Angels has a Parish Emergency Fund funded by parishioners and available to parishioners facing financial emergencies and needing economic assistance. Requests should be directed to our rector or Junior Warden, Paul Multari, or any member of our Vestry. Currently there is $5000 in this Fund. At one time there was more than $20,000 in the Parish Emergency Fund; so, if you are able to contribute, all gifts are welcome! THE MENS GROUP: Each week we discuss a chapter or two of a book, typically on theology, philosophy and science. We meet 7.30-9.00am each Thursday in Davis Library. All men welcome regardless of faith or lack of it.

Pick up a pamphlet or two to share with family and friends. A donation box is provided. Ruth Poole comments,I found the title A Spirituality of Extroverts intriguing. The author, a Roman Catholic priest (this was written in 1939) states that for over thirty years I thought I didn't have a spiritual bone in my body. My parents, deeply religious, were classic introverts. But I am an extrovert. He points out that the spiritual classics emphasize contemplation and suggest that the spiritual process is deeply internal, divorced from all things external. He finds that the doctrine of incarnation appeals especially to the extrovert and that the Eucharist is very powerful. He goes on to express what extrovert spirituality is about. He does, however, recognize that contrasting spiritualities are not mutually exclusive. More information on these pamphlets can be found at www.forward movement.com. LOAVES AND FISHES: In June we will collect large jars of peanut butter and strawberry jam. These will be used to make sandwiches for the children who are out of school for the summer and wont be receiving subsidized lunches. June 25 in All Angels Court. Most people cant identify a single risk factor or a warning sign of stroke, yet over 750,000 Americans will be affected by a stroke this year alone! Life Line Screening will be here at St. Mikes on June 25 performing a day of preventive health screenings. Screenings are fast, painless and offered at low cost. They involve the use of ultrasound technology and scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which can lead to a stroke, aortic aneurysms which can lead to a rupture, and plaque buildup in the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease. Also offered is a bone density screening to assess the risk for osteoporosis. These non-invasive, inexpensive and painless ultrasound tests help people identify their risk for stroke, vascular diseases or osteoporosis early enough for their physician to begin preventive procedures. ave you stepped back and patted yourself on the back yet for getting through winter and spring? Its funny how every year seems to be a little busier, or a little more tiring, than the last. Hopefully all of you will have some time this summer to enjoy the beach and the sun. Certainly the church music program will be a little more relaxed over the summer. But we do have some things to announce! First, I want to encourage everyone to think about singing in the summer choir. This will begin on Sunday, June 9. The summer choir does not vest, and does not practice during the week. In fact, while we will have pre-service runs of the hymns, you dont have to feel like you cant sing if you get there a little late! Young and old, families and children; all are welcome. We will run through the hymns at 9:45, before the 10am service. Please consider joining us! Second, we take hymn requests! Summer is a good time to entertain

such requests, as we are not limited in our choice of hymns by the liturgical season. You may remember a few weeks ago we sang, I want to walk as a child of the light at the 10am service. That was a request by one of our very faithful parishioners. So, as long as the hymn is not too obscure or difficult, we will try to accommodate. Just send your request to sblack@stmikescdm.org. Finally, on July 7 we will have a patriotic songfest after the 10am service. We will sing national songs, as well as American hymns not associated with July 4 (songs like that Dixieland tune associated with the New Orleans Saints football team, among other things!). So mark your calendars, for it promises to be a fun time. Weve not done this before, at least since Ive been at Saint Michaels, and Im eager to have a go at it. I want to wrap this up by thanking everyone for their extraordinary support of the music program this past season. From the Faur Requiem to the visit of the Russian choir LYRA, and other liturgies and events, it has

been a remarkable season. A special thanks to Pat Albers, Peggy Strong, Barbara Black, Barbara Paulson and Jim Palda for their generous donations of time and talent. Happy summer everyone!
