Anesthesiology
Careers in Chemistry
Period 5 DeShaun Lew

Anesthesiology is defined by Merriam-Websters dictionary as: a branch of medical science dealing with anesthesia and anesthetics. Or, in other words, the anesthesiologists are the people who administer pain killers or put you to sleep during an operation. When someone thinks of anesthesiology, the first thought that comes to mind is probably that of being put to sleep, that isnt the entire job of the anesthesiologist. They must be familiar with all aspects of a person. They must talk to the patient and their family in order to discover any allergies that exist or other factors that could not react as well with a certain medicine rather than using another. Then, during and after the procedure, they must monitor machines in order to oversee the patients reactions to the certain drugs administered. Anesthesiology utilizes chemistry as a main aspect of the careers makeup. The anesthesiologist must strategically use poisonous chemicals to render the patient merely unconscious but must be sure that the levels are correct. For if the anesthesiologist gives the patient too much of the chemicals, it could very well prove fatal. During the operation, they must oversee the patient and constantly be on guard in case something should go wrong. Once the procedure is completed, they essentially have to reverse the reaction in order to revive the patient. The chemistry used is called medicinal chemistry. The career choice of becoming an anesthesiologist is more than just that. It is a change in ones entire life. There is an immense amount of education and training in order to become one. Many courses in high school can help one in their journey to becoming an anesthesiologist. Taking A.P. classes on its own can have a major impact on a college application. But taking these classes in physics and chemistry related courses can provide valuable knowledge towards the career. After high school, in order to become an anesthesiologist, it would take the length of time that it took one to go through first through twelfth grade. This is just an average. Just imagine

graduating from high school only to have to suffer twelve more grueling years of school and training. This is what goes into becoming an anesthesiologist. They have to complete a bachelors degree, graduate from medical school, complete an internship, and also complete a four year residency program. That isnt even all of it. They also have to pass multiple tests in order to become board certified and be able to actually get hired. Overall, it is a very long process, but there has to be a reason that so many people want to become one. The wages for an anesthesiologist are very high in comparison to many other professions. The national average for anesthesiologists reaches upwards of 200,000 dollars per year. Granted, this number is greatly influenced on the experience of the anesthesiologist, the location in which he/she works, and their skill level in comparison to those around them. Not to mention the benefits including, but not limited to, health care, paid vacation, sick leave, and a retirement plan. These are all very nice, but the people who go into this field definitely deserve the wealth that comes with it. After all, becoming an anesthesiologist also has very negative side-effects for some. Out of any profession in medicine, anesthesiologists have the highest rate of substance abuse and also of successful suicides. The hazards for this career are many; the most obvious of which being that one small error can kill a person and this would be something that the person would have to live with for the rest of their lives. They are also exposed to toxic chemicals allday-long, and must come into contact with people who could be carrying diseases that, unbeknownst to him, the anesthesiologist could contract and spread to other physicians and patients. One of the main worries for the patient is that of acquiring halothane hepatitis. This is caused from the consumption of anesthetics. It attacks the liver and causes it to shut down. This is a major source of controversy towards the anesthesiologists community. Not to mention the

stress level that comes about from working sixty hours a week on average. They must always be on call and be able to make it to the hospital at any given hour. Their working conditions are very similar to that of any other physician, but they run a higher risk on unintentionally killing someone than most others.
