Rev. Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Genesis 11:1-9; Acts 2:1-21; John 14:8-27 May 19, 2013 PENTECOST In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and sisters, on this Sunday, when we remember the birth of the church and celebrate the Spirits abiding presence with us, I have good news! We are a Spiritled community of faith. While some might wonder if we Lutherans are a Spirit-filled people of faith, because of our historic tendency to sit quietly during church services and serve our neighbors with humility, there is no doubt that we are a Spirit-led,if not also a Spirit-filled,community of faith. The fact that we are a community of faith guided by the Spirit is good news. Celebrations like Pentecost remind us that, as much as we try and prepare and plan, the Spirit is the one who moves and guides us. This is good news, but if we take a moment to think about it, it can also be disturbing. Acts, from which we read today, depicts the Spirit in a unique way compared to what we find in John and Pauls writings. In the Gospel of John, the Spirit is an Advocatea constant, comforting, and peace-giving presence for us. In Pauls letters, the Spirit is what unites us with Christ. The Spirit transforms us into Christs body in the world, and gives each of us particular gifts for Gods community. In Acts the Spirit is the power of God. Its a burning wind that blows the church into new and unexpected places. In Acts, the Holy Spiritbrings life and transformation. In Acts, the Spirit transforms a group of people gathered in Jesus name into prophets into messengers of the Good News. For those of us who sit in our benches and quietly pray to be transformed just a little bit and for those of us who like to plan and prepare for how and what the church should do this image of the Spirit can be a bit disturbing because, just like the early

Christian communities described in Acts,the Spirit blows, and will blow, this church where it will regardless of our plans. It can be a bit disturbing, but I cant help but wonder if there is profound liberation in being a Spirit-led and Spirit-filled community. Last week, at the end of the service, I mentioned that there would be more lay leadership during Sunday morning worship services in preparation for a time between pastors. And to be honest: this is difficult for me. Its difficult to let go. At the same time, its pretty easy because I have no doubt that this church is,and its leaders are,Spiritled and Spirit-filled regardless of who your pastor is.

Taking a step back is difficult for me, because I like to plan and prepare.I like to prepare especially for this sacred space and time together on Sunday mornings. Its difficult, butIm confident that this transition is a new opportunity for the Spirit to blow this congregation where it will. This is what I mean when I say that there is profound liberation in the good news that we are Spirit-led and Spirit-filled. As much as we might like to control life, the church, or whatever happens next, we are bound by how the Spirit blows. Last time I preached, I shared some prayers that I have for you as a congregation. As my time draws to a close, Id like to share more; this time, the prayers I have for you related to the movement of the Spirit. I pray that you find unexpected liberation in the Spirits presence. I pray that you can remember and celebrate that you are a Spirit-led body of Christ. I pray that,as you await a new pastor, you will collectively seek to follow the movement of the Spirit. I pray that youwill listen to the Spirit, and follow it, because in doing so you will lift your dynamic, bilingual voice toproclaim the good news to the world. I pray that, when your new pastor arrives, they will be ready, open, and willing to lead you in following the movement of the Spiritbecause, after all, you are a Spirit-led and Spirit-filled community of faithand thanks be to God for that. Hermanos y hermanas, en este domingo, cuando recordamos el nacimiento de la iglesia y celebramos la presencia permanente del Espritu con nosotros, tengo buenas nuevas! Somos una comunidad de fe guiada por el Espritu. Si bien algunos podran preguntarse si nosotros los luteranos somos personas de fe llenas de Espritu, debido a nuestra tendencia histrica a sentarnos en silencio durante los servicios religiosos y servir a nuestro prjimo con humildad, no hay duda de que somos una comunidad de fe con un espritu guiado, sino tambin llena del Espritu Santo. El hecho de que somos una comunidad de fe guiada por el Espritu es una buena nueva. Celebraciones como el da de Pentecosts nos recuerda que, por mucho que tratamos de preparar y planear, el Espritu es el que nos mueve y nos gua. Esta es una buena nueva, pero si nos tomamos un momento para pensar en ello, esto tambin puede ser molesto. Hechos, lo que lemos hoy, representa el Espritu de una manera nica en comparacin con lo que encontramos en Juan y en los escritos de Pablo. En el Evangelio de Juan, el Espritu es un defensor... constante, reconfortante, y la paz que da presencia para nosotros. En las cartas de Pablo, el Espritu es lo que nos une a Cristo. El Espritu nos transforma en el cuerpo de Cristo en el mundo, y da a cada uno de nosotros en particular regalos para la comunidad de Dios. En Hechos el Espritu es el poder de Dios. Es un viento ardiente que sopla de la iglesia en lugares nuevos e inesperados. En Hechos, el Espritu Santo trae la vida y la transformacin. En Hechos, el Espritu transforma un grupo de personas reunidas en el nombre de Jess en los profetas ... en los mensajeros de la Buena Nueva. Para aquellos de nosotros que se sientan en nuestras bancas y en silencio oran para ser transformados... un poco... y para aquellos de nosotros que nos gusta planear y prepararen cmo y lo que la iglesia debe hacer... esta imagen del Espritu puede ser un poco molesta porque, al igual que las primeras comunidades cristianas descritas en Hechos, el Espritu

sopla, y soplar, esta iglesia a donde quiera... independientemente de nuestros planes. Puede ser un poco molesto, pero no puedo evitar preguntarme si hay una profunda liberacin en ser guiado por el Espritu y la comunidad llena del Espritu. La semana pasada, al final del servicio, les dije que habra ms liderazgo laico durante los servicios del culto del domingo por la maana en preparacin para un tiempo entre pastores. Y para ser honesto: esto es difcil para m. Es difcil dejarlo. Al mismo tiempo, es bastante fcil porque no tengo ninguna duda de que esta iglesia es, y sus lderes son, guiados por el Espritu y llenos del Espritu Santo ... independientemente de quien sea su pastor. Dando un paso atrs es difcil para m, porque me gusta planear y preparar. Me gusta prepararme especialmente para este espacio sagrado y este tiempo juntos en las maanas del domingo. Es difcil, pero estoy seguro de que esta transicin es una nueva oportunidad para que el Espritu sople esta congregacin a donde quiera. Esto es lo que quiero decir cuando digo que hay una profunda liberacin en la buena nueva de que somos guiados por el Espritu y llenos del Espritu Santo. Por mucho que nos gustara controlar la vida, la iglesia, o lo que sucede despus, estamos sujetos a como el Espritu sopla. La ltima vez que os he predicado, he compartido algunas oraciones que tengo para ustedes como congregacin. Como mi tiempo llega a su fin, me gustara compartir ms, esta vez, las oraciones que tengo para ustedes con respecto al movimiento del Espritu. Pido que ustedes encuentren la liberacin inesperada en la presencia del Espritu. Oro para que ustedes puedan recordar y celebrar que son un cuerpo guiado por el Espritu de Cristo. Oro para que, mientras esperen a un nuevo pastor, que colectivamente tratarn de seguir el movimiento del Espritu. Pido que ustedes escuchen al Espritu, y lo sigan, porque al hacerlo se levante su voz dinmica, bilinge, para proclamar la buena nueva al mundo. Oro para que, cuando llegue su nuevo pastor, estarn listos, abiertos y dispuestos a guiarse en seguir el movimiento del Espritu... porque, despus de todo, ustedes son una comunidad de fe guiados por el Espritu y llenos del Espritu Santo ... y gracias a Dios por eso.
