Q2. (a) ISA 100x100x10mm (Cross sectional area = 1908 sq.mm) serves as tensile member. This angle is welded to a gusset plate along A and B appropriately as shown below. Assuming the yield strength of the steel to be 230 N/mm2, calculate the tensile strength of this member.

(b) For Q2 (a) Design the welded connection for the calculated tensile strength.

Q3. (a) Design Cross Section for a built-up column composed of channel sections placed back to back and carrying an axial load of 750 kN. Its length is 5m and it is effectively held in position at both ends and restrained against rotation at one end. Take fy = 250 N/mm2. (b) For Question 3(a) Design Double Lacing. Q4. (a) Determine the size of fillet weld required to join the bracket plate with the flange of column as shown below. The Fusion face is 1000.

(b) Design a welded end connection for a tension member consisting of a channel MC300 (Area= 46.3 sq. cm, Thickness of

web = 7.8mm) to develop full strength of the member. The length of joint is limited to 20cm. Q5. (a) A steel flat of rectangular section of size 70 x 12 mm is connected to a gusset plate by three bolts each having a shear capacity of 15kN in holes having diameter 11.5mm. If the allowable tensile stress in the flat is 150MPa, the maximum tension that can be applied to the flat is

(b) A compound steel column consisting of 2 lSHB400 placed at 300mm center to center carries a total axial load of 2000kN. Minimum slenderness ratio of the compound column is 30. Width of the flange of one ISHB section is 250 mm and its minimum radius of gyration is 51.6 mm. Design a suitable single flat lacing. Assume 18 mm diameter single rivet is used to connect the lacings to the column. Section C [2 x (6+6+6) =36] Q6. (a) Design a tension member subjected to a pull of 200 kN using two unequal angles placed back-to-back with their longer legs connected on the same side of the gusset plate by 16-mm dia. rivets. Also design the end connection using hand-driven rivets. Sketch the joint showing, pitch and edge distance. (b) Find the strength of the member designed for Q6 (a) if the angles are connected on either side of the gusset plate. (c) What will be the load carrying capacity of the member designed in 6(a) in case the shorter legs are connected on the same side of the gusset? Q7. Two wheels, placed at a distance of 20 m apart with a load of 180 kN on each of them are moving on a simply supported girder (l-section) of span 50m. The top and bottom flanges of the I - section are of 200 x 18 mm and the size of web plate is 800 X 8 mm. (self-weight of the girder may be neglected.) (a) Check the adequacy of the section against bending.

(b) Check the adequacy of the section for shear stresses. (c) Check the adequacy of section for deflection considering equivalent u.d.l on the girder as 12kN/m.

Q8. A tension member, consisting of 4 ISA 90 X 90 X 10 is connected to the gusset plate by 16 mm diameter rivets, as shown below.

Find the permissible load in the member when (a) Angles are tack-riveted along a, b, c and d. (b) Angles are tack-riveted along a and b only. (c) No tack riveting is done.

Section D [1x (5+5+5+5) = 20] Q9. (a) Design a simply supported beam, having an effective span of 8m and carrying a uniformly distributed load of 20 kN/m. The beam is laterally supported. Take fy=250N/mm2 and E=2x 105 N/mm2. (b) Redesign the beam of Q9 (a), If the beam is laterally unsupported. Assume that each end of the beam is restrained against torsion and end of the compression flanges are fully restrained against lateral bending. (c) If the beam of Q9 (b) is laterally unsupported, determine the safe load the beam can carry. Assume that each end of the beam is restrained against torsion, and that ends of the compression flanges are unrestrained against laterally bending. (d) Check the beam of problem 9(a) against web crippling and web buckling at the ends, if the length of bearing plate at the support is 150 mm.

Q10. (a) A Diagonal member of a roof carries a maximum axial pull of 250kN. Design the section and the connections with a 12mm gusset plate. Sketch the Connection Detail.

(b) A single angle tension member 200 x 100 x 15 mm is connected by two rows of rivets through its long leg and one row of rivets through the short leg as shown below. Rivets are 20mm in diameter, Power driven. Determine the minimum staggered pitch so that reduction in area will be only two holes.

(c) Check weather 16 diameter Power driven rivet is safe for the connection shown below.

(d) A beam simply supported over a span of 9 m consists of ISWB 450. Determine the U.D.L the beam can support in addition to its weight, if the beam connected to the columns at the end is by framed connections and there is lateral support at every 3m spacing. Take fy=250N/mm2 and E=2x105N/mm2
